Vikings drop homecoming tilt to Resorters on 105.1 The GOAT

Another slow start doomed the Gibraltar Vikings on Friday, this time resulting in a 41-20 homecoming loss to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah on 105.1 The GOAT.

The Vikings quickly found themselves down 21-0 after Resorters quarterback Cole Wagner connected with Brennan Goble for a 31-yard touchdown pass and Jack McKibben for a 45-yard score before Goble took a Luke Pelkey interception the other way for a touchdown. The Vikings' offense found life in the second quarter when Landen Pelkey scampered into the end zone from 40 yards out to make it 21-8. A combined sack by Wyatt Bultman and Xavier Gaddes set up the Vikings with good field position, setting the stage for Luke Pelkey's first touchdown pass of the season on a 60-yard connection to Bultman to make it 21-14.

Despite recovering an onside kick, the Vikings went scoreless on their final two drives of the half, while Wagner found Mason Chapman for a 7-yard touchdown to make it 28-14 at the break.

The Resorters wasted no time stretching their advantage to three scores in the third quarter, with Wagner finding Goble two more times in the frame, while the Vikings mustered one more touchdown on a 9-yard run by Brady White.

Both teams had time-consuming drives that took up most of the fourth quarter, with the Vikings' last, best chance coming up short after Milo Andrews fumbled inside the 10-yard line to end the game on a sour note.

The Vikings will play their season finale next Thursday when they travel to Institute to battle Sevastopol. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m., followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.

Vikings football welcomes Resorters for homecoming on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings play their first home game in nearly a month on Friday when they host Elkhart Lake/Glenbeulah for its homecoming matchup on 105.1 The GOAT.

Last week, the Vikings showed their inexperience on Friday night in a 62-6 loss to NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy at Oneida Nation. The Vikings mustered just 91 yards of offense in the game, highlighted by a long run by Brady White to push him over the century mark on the ground. Landon Pelkey's 68 yard kickoff return for the team's lone points was the highlight for the Vikings.

The Resorters did not fair much better in last week's 44-0 loss to Algoma. They are, however, 4-3 enter the game thanks to quarterback Cole Wagner and his 944 yards passing and Matthew Schukow's 284 rushing yards. Wagner has thrown for 16 touchdowns on the season, 10 of which have gone to Brennan Goble, who leads the team with 595 yards receiving.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 the GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Vikings volleyball tops Eagles in four sets

The Gibraltar volleyball team overcame a first set loss to win the final three to beat Southern Door on Thursday night.

The Vikings dropped the first set to the Eagles 24-26 before winning the others 25-20, 25-15, 25-22.

The Vikings were led by

Aileen Torres (13 kills, 7 digs, 3 blocks), Isla Fagundes (30 assists, 4 digs), Ella Clarke (9 kills, 3 blocks), Ema Collak (9 kills, 2 aces, 8 digs), and Azucena Jauregui (8 kills, 2 aces, 8 digs).

Head coach Lauren Ward credited the Eagles for putting her girls in some rough spots during the match, specifically in the first and fourth sets, but she was proud of how the Vikings responded. "In the first set, we pulled out ahead early but a late Eagles run and poor serving lost us the set," Ward said. "The next two sets we were able to play some clean defense and put the ball away consistently, finding holes on the court and converting. The fourth set was a little rough and Southern Door put us in a hole we had to dig out of. Serving was both a blessing and a curse at different moments in the night. Ultimately, though, the toughness and brains of our four big swingers paired with tidy back row play carried us."

The Vikings go back to work next week when they play Sevastopol.

United battles Bulldogs in homecoming match

A homecoming football game of a different kind takes over on Thursday when Gibraltar/Sevastopol welcomes Peshtigo to Fish Creek.

The United are coming off a 2-0 win over Algoma on Tuesday, which snapped a three-match losing streak that saw them get outscored 13-1.

The Bulldogs have been mired in their own three-match losing streak and have lost four of their last five. In three of their four losses, they gave up at least nine goals.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
