Gibraltar volleyball advances to face NEW Lutheran after Gresham sweep

The Gibraltar Vikings volleyball team will travel to NEW Lutheran on Saturday, Oct. 24, for a 7 p.m. postseason matchup.

The Vikings are coming off a three-set sweep of Gresham on Thursday, winning 25-17, 25-13 and 28-26. Gibraltar dominated from the service line, serving at a 95% clip while recording 11 aces.

Ella Clarke led the Vikings with 19 kills, two blocks, seven digs and two aces. Azucena Jauregui added 13 kills, two aces, three assists and 16 digs, while Isla Fagundes finished with 37 assists, 10 digs and two aces. Megan Schar contributed eight kills, nine digs and one block.

Head coach Lauren Ward said her team entered the match with plenty of energy and "got the job done efficiently," thanks in part to Fagundes connecting with Clarke and Jauregui throughout the night. The pair combined for 32 of Gibraltar's 46 kills.

"With consistent tough serving and a fire in the belly, the girls stepped onto the court with grit and didn’t look back," Ward said.

Even when things became challenging in the third set, Ward praised her team's resilience.

"It was a fun night and a good win. I’m proud of the intensity and joy they brought to the semifinals."

The victory improved Gibraltar's record to 15-15 heading into Saturday's matchup against a NEW Lutheran team that enters with a 31-11 record.

The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday at NEW Lutheran High School.
