Gibraltar volleyball looks for bounceback against Peshtigo

Category: Local News

After a tough five-set loss to their rivals on Tuesday, the Gibraltar volleyball team looks to get back into the swing of things on Thursday with a trip to Peshtigo.

The Vikings fell to Sevastopol 25-18, 17-25, 25-17, 16-25, 12-15 on Tuesday. Azucena Jauregui (10 kills, 13 digs, 3 blocks), Ella Clarke (9 kills, 4 blocks), Ema Collak (9 kills, 11 digs), Aileen Torres (7 kills, 3 aces, 12 digs), and Isla Fagundes (33 assists, 12 digs) led the way in the loss.

Head coach Lauren Ward called the match "a wild ride", adding that the Vikings continue to do what they have been doing well. "Our girls continued to do what we've been doing well: solid serve receive and defense and very few errors on the service line," Ward said.  "At times we were able to slow down Sevastopol's offense with strong net play, but not consistently enough to win the night. Celeste Jauregui had some insane digs in the back row and kept the ball alive long enough to swing some positive momentum our way. Azucena Jauregui's aggressive offense stood out among her teammates as well. The Pioneers never give up on a ball, so we felt good to be matching that energy. A tough loss, but I'm very proud of the match our girls played."

The Bulldogs are 11-13 overall and 1-4 in Packerland play. They have four of their last five matches, including a 3-0 sweep of Kewaunee their last time out.

First serve is set for 7 p.m.
