United, Clippers renew rivalry in sectional semifinal on U-102.1

Gibraltar/Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay will meet for the third time this season on Thursday, but much more will be at stake this time around.

The Clippers cruised through New Holstein and St. Mary Catholic to earn a third home game and a sectional semifinal berth, outscoring their opponents 15-1 in the process. The lone goal given up was an own goal in the second half of their match against the Zephyrs. Kayden Klotz (4), Zone Weinke (2), Finn Stevenson (3), Jaylen Reynolds (2) all have multiple goals this postseason. The win allowed the Clippers to capture their 16th consecutive regional championship.

The road to the sectional semifinal for the United has been bumpier. Last Saturday, the team earned its regional title in a shootout win over Amherst after beating Algoma 4-1 in its tournament opener. Juniors Damien Lardinois and Mauricio Fernandez and seniors Trey Perlman and Gabe Peterson drilled their shootout attempts to clinch the program's first regional title since 2010.

The lone blemishes on the United's conference record came at the hands of the Clippers. Sturgeon Bay won the first meeting at Clark Field 7-1 before the United nearly pulled off the upset in the second meeting, losing to the Clippers 3-2.

Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call from Clark Field beginning at 6:45 p.m. on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com with the pregame show followed by the opening touch at 7 p.m.

United captures regional title

For the first time since 2010, Gibraltar/Sevastopol United are WIAA Boys Soccer Division 4 Regional Champions!

The #6 seed United won their match on Saturday, October 26 against #3 Amherst, defeating the host Falcons 1-1 (4-3).

Amherst took the lead during the first half off a header (28'). United came out of the halftime break fired up, and junior Damien Lardinois netted the equalizer within the first minute of the second half (41').

The contest remained tied for the remainder of the 80-minute match and the 20 minutes of overtime, sending the fate of the game to a shootout.

Lardinois and United seniors Trey Perlman and Gabe Peterson each netted successful tries. A miss by the Falcon's fifth shooter set the stage for United junior Mauricio Fernandez to bury his kick into the back of the net and secure the thrilling, come-from-behind championship victory.  [video]

#6 United will face Packerland Conference rivals the #2 seed Sturgeon Bay Clippers in a Sectional semifinal game on Thursday, October 31. The Clippers will host the 7pm matchup.

The Regional Championship comes on the heels of yesterday's announcement of the Packerland Conference 2024 All-Conference Team, with eight United players receiving recognition. First Team honorees included senior forward Trey Perlman; senior midfielders Gabe Peterson (unanimous) and Cristino Valdivia. Second Team honorees were junior forward Mauricio Fernandez; junior defenders Marco Jauregui and Sean Neal; and junior goalkeeper Aaron Tomaszewski. Honorable Mention went to junior midfielder Brandon Mayorga.

Vikings close season winless on 105.1 The GOAT

Gibraltar head coach Mike Peck doesn't like moral victories, but he was able to find plenty of positives in the Vikings' 32-0 season-ending loss on the road to Wabeno-Laona Friday night.

Both teams got off to slow starts as the Vikings were victimized by two turnovers early, one of which was followed by a Beckett Johnson interception that kept things tied at zero. The Rebels' Timber Cronauer was able to make a senior night memory from 57 yards out to make it 8-0 for the game's first score. The Vikings were poised to score after Wyatt Bultman caught a deflected pass to get the ball inside the five-yard line with four downs to work. The Rebels were able to turn the Vikings away and followed up with a one-yard touchdown run to give them a 16-0 lead at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, Walker Winkelman scored two long touchdowns from more than 50 yards out to put the game well out of reach of the Vikings, who were picked off three times to close the season.

The Vikings end their season 0-8, their first winless season since the 2021 alternative fall season. Peck was still encouraged by the team's performance on Friday night, setting the stage for what he hopes will be a more successful 2025 campaign.

United Fend Off GB East

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol United boys soccer regular season concluded on a high note on Thursday, October 17, with victories for both the JV and varsity squads at home versus Green Bay East. JV won their match 3-1, and varsity defeated the Red Devils 1-0.

In the JV match, United sophomore Matt Seabright netted a hat-trick for a come-from-behind victory.

On the varsity side, the lone United goal came from junior Brandon Mayorga off an assist from junior Christian Ruiz (58'). United junior goalkeeper Aaron Tomaszewski recorded his third straight shutout outing for the week.

The win gives United varsity a final tally of 11-4 for the regular season.

Vikings football try to end season on positive note on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings will have one final attempt to taste victory on Friday night when they travel west to face Wabeno-Laona.

The Vikings were forced to forfeit last week's game after several players were injured in the team's 42-6 loss to Suring two weeks ago. The team has struggled offensively all season, averaging less than four points a game and 100 yards per game. A win would help the Vikings avoid their second winless season since 2020. In that season, the Vikings were also short players in a shortened alternate fall season that bled directly into baseball season.

The Rebels enter the matchup 6-2 on the season, needing a win to bolster their resume to get into the WIAA Eight-Man Football Playoffs. Cooper Albrecht and Walker Winkelman do it all for the team as they both lead the team in passing and rushing while latter is second on the team in receiving. Similar to the Vikings, they ran into their own buzzsaw against Almond/Bancroft, losing their game to them last week 66-28.

Tim Kowols will have the call of the season finale on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Gibraltar forfeits game against Lena/St.Thomas

The Gibraltar Vikings will not be making the trip to Lena Friday, instead forfeiting their match-up to Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas.

Coach Mike Peck told NEW Radio Sports Network on Thursday morning that he had to make the tough decision to forfeit as they looked for their first win of the season.

The Vikings struggled to slow down the Suring Eagles in the second half as they lost their home finale 42-6 last Friday night. The Vikings were stymied early but broke through in the opening moments of the second quarter when Wyatt Bultman brought down a Giovanni Mercier pass in the endzone to make it 8-6. The loss dropped the Vikings to 0-6 on the season. Will Lecy leads the team with 283 yards on the ground and another 142 yards through the air.

Gibraltar/Sevastopol United boys varsity soccer lost their non-conference matchup at Appleton West High School on Saturday, October 5, by a score of 4-3.

United owned the first half of the match, with back-to-back goals by juniors Mauricio Fernandez (19') and Brandon Mayorga (20') giving United a 2-0 lead at halftime. The second half was a different story, with The Terrors scoring two goals to tie the game with 20 minutes remaining. Two more goals in quick succession secured the victory for Appleton West. United senior Thomas Seabright scored in the final minute to end the match.

Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer travels to Appleton West Saturday

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer team will break out of Packerland play on Saturday when they visit Appleton West.

Vikings worn down by Eagles on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings struggled to slow down the Suring Eagles in the second half as they lost their home finale 42-6.

The Eagles put the Vikings on their heels from the first whistle as Kroix Kempka capped off a 35 second drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to put his team ahead 8-0. The Vikings were stymied early but broke through in the opening moments of the second quarter when Wyatt Bultman brought down a Giovanni Mercier pass in the endzone to make it 8-6. That would be the last time the Vikings would crack the goal line and the closest they would get in the game as the Eagle scored on their next two possessions to make 22-6 at the break.

The Vikings were able to celebrate their families as a part of the parents' night festivities at halftime.

After trading punts on their first possession of the second half, the Eagles scored on their next three to send the game to a running clock in the fourth quarter. Taylor Booth-Stoffregen connected with Michael Bailey twice on scramble plays, while Kempka and Grant Thomson each added their second rushing touchdowns late in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings dropped to 0-6 on the season and finished their home slate with an 0-3 mark. They will try knock off the Across the Bay Conference-leading Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Titans next Friday night. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening kickoff at 7 p.m.

Vikings host Eagles in home finale on 105.1 The GOAT

Seniors Jeffrey Mize and Will Lecy will play in their final football game in Fish Creek Friday night as Gibraltar hosts Suring in their home finale.

The Vikings fell to Gillett last week 28-12 in what was their most competitive game of the season. Two Lecy touchdowns made it 14-12 with just over two minutes to play in the second quarter before the Tigers were able to pull away late. The two scores matched their offensive from the previous four weeks combined as they still look for their first win of the season.

The Eagles are just above the Vikings in the Across the Bay standings thanks to a 40-0 win over Gillett a few weeks ago. They saw a two-game winning streak get snapped by Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas in a 36-14 decision. Kroix Kempka and Grant Thomson have combined for over 800 yards rushing this season.

Tim Kowols will have the call from Fish Creek on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first kick at 7 p.m. The game will also be streamed worldwide at NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com and 1051TheGOAT.com.
