Gibraltar/Sevastopol and Sturgeon Bay will meet for the third time this season on Thursday, but much more will be at stake this time around.
The Clippers cruised through New Holstein and St. Mary Catholic to earn a third home game and a sectional semifinal berth, outscoring their opponents 15-1 in the process. The lone goal given up was an own goal in the second half of their match against the Zephyrs. Kayden Klotz (4), Zone Weinke (2), Finn Stevenson (3), Jaylen Reynolds (2) all have multiple goals this postseason. The win allowed the Clippers to capture their 16th consecutive regional championship.
The road to the sectional semifinal for the United has been bumpier. Last Saturday, the team earned its regional title in a shootout win over Amherst after beating Algoma 4-1 in its tournament opener. Juniors Damien Lardinois and Mauricio Fernandez and seniors Trey Perlman and Gabe Peterson drilled their shootout attempts to clinch the program's first regional title since 2010.
The lone blemishes on the United's conference record came at the hands of the Clippers. Sturgeon Bay won the first meeting at Clark Field 7-1 before the United nearly pulled off the upset in the second meeting, losing to the Clippers 3-2.
Bryan Mazur and Peter Kerwin will have the call from Clark Field beginning at 6:45 p.m. on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com with the pregame show followed by the opening touch at 7 p.m.
