Gibraltar falls at home to NEW

Gibraltar's pitching and defense were stellar on Saturday at home against Green Bay NEW Lutheran. The problem was they couldn't get anything going offensively. The final score was 2-0.

Back in 2010, Gibraltar's baseball team did everything right going undefeated in the Packerland Conference. The top hitter that season was Tom Sawyer who was the answer to Saturday's trivia question. Congratulations to Sally Pfeifer for answering the question correctly! She will win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the day - 4-27-19

Saturday's trivia question is, "In 2010, the Gibraltar baseball team went undefeated in the Packerland Conference. Who led the Vikings in hits, RBI's and walks drawn that season?" (Hint: He shares the name of a famous literary character)

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Sunday.

Kropuenske fighting back from injuries

Gibraltar senior thrower Ryan Kropuenske is hoping to put a host of injuries behind him during the final athletic season of his career. Last season, Kropuenske had to deal with a broken foot before dealing with stress fractures in his back entering this year. He admits he has missed some lifting sessions and workouts dating back to when he was forced to watch the Gibraltar basketball make its run to sectionals from the bench. After finishing in third place at the Door County Classic earlier this week in both shot put and discus, that does not mean his goals for his senior season are out of the question.

Kropuenske and the Gibraltar track team will join Southern Door, Sevastopol, and Luxemburg-Casco at an invitational hosted by Luxemburg-Casco at 3:45 p.m.

Reinhardt gem leads Gibraltar baseball past Kewaunee

Gibraltar pitcher Trevor Reinhardt put the team on his back Monday evening, collecting two RBI and going the distance in a 3-1 victory over Kewaunee Monday night.

Reinhardt allowed just a single run over seven innings of working, scattering seven hits while striking out seven. Brandon Stillman accounted for the other RBI while Alex Laughlin tacked on two hits. Kewaunee's Wyatt Kruse nearly matched Reinhardt on the mound, striking out six on seven hits in six innings of work. Daniel Stangel accounted for the lone RBI for Kewaunee.

Sitte, Henry, Ash win Door County Classic titles

Gibraltar's Abbigael Sitte, Evan Henry, and Brady Ash have county bragging rights after capturing individual titles at Monday's Classic meet in Fish Creek.

Ash's leap of 5'06" propelled him to win the high jump event. Henry, who took third in the high jump, swept the distance events with 4:45 in the 1600 meter run and a 10:40 in the 3200 meter run. Sitte was the big winner for the Vikings on the girls' side, capturing wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, finishing second in the high jump, and taking part in the winning 4 x 100 meter relay team.

Gibraltar hosts Door County Classic track meet

Bragging rights are on the line Monday afternoon when the track teams of Sevastopol, Gibraltar, Southern Door, and Sturgeon Bay compete in the Door County Classic.

The Clippers are coming off an impressive performance at the Packerland Relays meet with the boys coming in second place and the girls claiming the team title. A team not named Sturgeon Bay has not won a Door County Classic title since 2016 when Southern Door beat the Clippers on the girls' side. The 2018 edition was snowed out.

First events begin at 4:30 p.m.

Gibraltar female athletes of the year

It will be a tough competition for who will be Gibraltar's Female Athlete of the Year. Peyton Pluff, Mya Ploor, Bria Caldecott among many others are worthy candidates in 2018-2019. Last year's winner was Sofia Jauregui. In 2016-2017, Riley Haleen took the honors. Riley was the answer to Saturday's trivia question.

Congratulations to Doris Moore who answered the question correctly! She will win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the Day 4-20-19

Saturday's question is, "Sofia Jauregui won Gibraltar's 2017-2018 Female Athlete of the Year. Who wore that crown the year before?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Sunday.

Vikings two-hit by Clippers

The Gibraltar Vikings baseball team could not get the offense going in a 3-0 loss to conference-leading Sturgeon Bay Thursday.

Andras Szakala provided the biggest piece of excitement for the Vikings offense, getting a double for one of the team's two hits on the evening. Eric Hoyerman and Luke Steebs did what they could to slow down the Clippers offense, but a trio of two-out singles led to the loss.

Gibraltar's Caldecott leads by example

Being a leader on the Gibraltar track team is nothing new for senior Bria Caldecott. The lone senior has led by example since she first joined the team, qualifying for the state meet last year in the high jump and as a member of the Gibraltar girls 4 x 100-meter relay. Caldecott credits her coaches and her teammates for the success she has been able to enjoy.

One of the recipients of this year’s Volunteer Center of Door County youth scholarship awards, Caldecott plans on attending UW-Madison next year. Gibraltar will join its conference rivals in Oconto Thursday afternoon for the Packerland Relays meet beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Gibraltar track and field teams finish third in Algoma

The boys and girls Gibraltar track and field teams both finished in third place in Algoma on Tuesday. The boys racked up 44 points while the girls got 54.

Evan Henry won the 1600M and 3200M races. His basketball teammate Brady Ash took home first in the High Jump.

Abbigael Sitte won the 200M and High Jump. The girls relay teams took home the 4x100 and 4x200. Abbey Fitzgerald was the winner in the Long Jump.

Gibraltar baseball loses at Peshtigo

Gibraltar fell in their conference matchup in Peshtigo on Tuesday with the final score being 7-1. The Vikings will get another chance to pick up a win in the Packerland when they host Sturgeon Bay on Thursday.

Kita gets three hits in loss to Kewaunee

Karlee Kita was perfect at the plate, but it was not enough as the Gibraltar Vikings lost 8-5 to the Kewaunee Storm in Packerland Conference softball action.

Kita collected three hits on the evening, helping the Vikings score their five runs. While they had some success against her at the plate, the Vikings pitchers could not have the same success against Kewaunee Claire Kohnle. She and her teammate Elizabeth Rohr went a combined 7-8 at the plate.

The Vikings head back on the road Tuesday when they travel to Peshtigo for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Gibraltar baseball to go 10 days between games

Thanks to Mother Nature, the Gibraltar baseball team will have at least nine days of rest. Thursday's game against Southern Door and Saturday's game against Coleman were postponed due to the snowstorm. The Vikings next scheduled game is at Peshtigo on Tuesday. Gibraltar is coming off a pair of losses on Saturday, April 6th to Bloomer and Johnson Creek. The Vikings record is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Packerland Conference.

The last time Gibraltar baseball won a state championship, the Packerland Conference didn't exist yet. That legendary team was coached by Rod Billerbeck back in 1979. He was the answer to Saturday's trivia question which asked who coached the only Gibraltar baseball team to a state championship. Congratulations to  Dan Barnowsky for answering the question correctly! Dan is the winner of a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the day - 4-13-19

Saturday's trivia question is, "Who coached Gibraltar baseball to their only state championship in 1979?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Sunday.

Henry looks to end senior year on a successful note

It has been a banner senior year for Gibraltar distance runner Evan Henry. After earning a spot on the all-state cross country team with a fifth-place finish, Henry helped lead the Vikings to its best showing in the WIAA basketball playoffs in forty years with an appearance in the sectional semi-final. Turning his focus to the track for the final time as a high school athlete, Henry hopes to keep the momentum rolling.

He does not know if he will compete in college, but Henry will be attending the University of Wisconsin this fall. Henry and his Gibraltar teammates will compete in a Packerland Conference track meet against Sevastopol, Kewaunee, Algoma, and NEW Lutheran this afternoon at 4 p.m.

Exceptional Gibraltar athletes

Gibraltar has a tremendous history of having exceptional athletes. Evan Henry has joined that list with his high school sports career. On Friday he finished first in the 1600M run in the Neenah Invitational. This is after he helped lead the Gibraltar boys basketball team to a regional championship.

Ryan Jacobson may be number one when it comes to the all-time great athletes at Gibraltar. He won multiple state championships as a runner in track and field. He was the correct answer to Saturday's trivia question which asked who broke the Gibraltar school records in the 400M, 800M and 1600M runs and won state championships in all those events in 2000.

Congratulations to Robert Neuville who answered the question correctly!

Evan Henry wins 1600M in Neenah

The Gibraltar boys track and field team was at Neenah on Friday for an indoor meet. Evan Henry was the star for the Vikings as he won the 1600 Meter Run putting in a time of 4:57.92a.

Overall, Gibraltar scored 28.5 team points. Leif Olson finished sixth in the 400 Meters (1:01.46a). In the SMR 100-100-200-400, the Vikings team of Victor Jauregui, Jack Hitzeman, Connor Thompson and Evan Henry placed second (4:13.63a). Brady Ash tied for fifth in the high jump (5-06.00).

Gibraltar baseball picks up second straight close victory

Gibraltar baseball won their second one-run game in two days in a tournament in Mauston on Friday. The Vikings knocked off Loyal 5-4. The deciding run was scored in the fifth inning. Trevor Reinhardt and Spencer Krause were the hitting stars of the game with Reinhardt going 2-3 and Krause picking up 3 RBI's. Gibraltar will continue in the tournament on Saturday against Johnson Creek.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the day - 4-6-19

Saturday's trivia question is, "In 2000, Dan Dahlstrom broke the Gibraltar school record in the high jump at 6'7". In that same season, which of Dahlstrom's teammates broke school records in the 400M, 800M and 1600M runs and won state championships in each of those events?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a prize.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Sunday.

Gibraltar baseball tops Sevastopol

Gibraltar's Spencer Krause collected a pair of hits and RBI to lead the Vikings to a 7-6 victory over the visiting Sevastopol Pioneers. Key to the victory was the ability to manufacture runs, turning 11 hits into seven runs. Sam Lindenberg and Andras Szakala each had a pair of hits and an RBI in the victory. Eric Hoyerman picked up the victory with one inning of shutout baseball while stranding two baserunners.

Gibraltar softball clobbers Green Bay NEW Lutheran

Gibraltar softball had no issue with Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Tuesday getting a 25-3 win on the road. Gabby Lettie scored five runs and Karlee Kita added a three-run double for the Vikings. Kita was also the winning pitcher in the game.

Gibraltar's next game will be at home on Thursday against Sevastopol with the first pitch at 5 PM.

Gibraltar baseball falls in Green Bay

Trevor Reinhardt's two doubles and three RBI's were not enough to lead Gibraltar baseball to a victory over Green NEW Lutheran on Tuesday. The Vikings went on the road and lost to the Blazers 12-7. Gibraltar had a 5-4 lead after the second inning but NEW Lutheran scored 4 in the third and never looked back.

Gibraltar will host Sevastopol on Thursday with the first pitch at 5 PM.
