Gibraltar girls in Green Bay for conference tilt on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings play their first road game of the Packerland Conference season on Friday night when they travel to Green Bay to face NEW Lutheran.

The Vikings faced a tough test to open Packerland play, losing to Kewaunee 63-39 at home earlier this week. Mikala Gorham's 18 points matched Kewaunee's top player in Jade Kroll, but the rest of the team mustered 21 additional points in the loss. Head coach Evan DeBroux focused on the positives at the start of the season, where they narrowly lost to Gillett in the opener and beat Hilbert a few days later for their first pre-New Year's Day win since the 2020-2021 season.

The Blazers have a new look to them after Ebony Sinclair transferred to West De Pere in the offseason, but Ingrid Beaumont and Lexi Meerstein still provide challenges to the Vikings' defense. The pair is averaging double figures (15. 7 ppg and 10.7 ppg) after losses to Algoma, Kohler, and Crivitz to start the season.

Tim Kowols and Matt Malvitz have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the tipoff at 6:30 p.m.

Vikings boys open season with loss to Tigers

The Gibraltar Vikings showed the need for a second scoring option on Monday night as they lost to Gillett 60-36.

Braden Sitte was the offense for the Vikings, scoring 12 of his team-high 20 points in the first half. That opening frame nearly outscored the rest of the Vikings' squad for the rest of the game as they found themselves down nine at the break. Jeffrey Mize scored seven points, and Kayin Jackson added five points in the Vikings' loss. Two others scored two points. For the Tigers, Jesse DeBauch continued his hot start to the season with 22 points, while Aydin Frank scored 15 points and Ben Matczak 12 points.

Head coach Travis Ward said it was a role reversal from when the two teams faced each other when the senior-laden Vikings rolled the young Tigers on their way to state.

Gibraltar boys open season vs. Gillett

The Gibraltar Vikings boys' basketball team hopes the 2023-2024 season ends with at least a third straight appearance in the sectional final when they open their campaign against Gillett on Monday.

Braden Sitte is the top returning player after averaging over nine points a game during his junior season. The Vikings finished 13-15 in Travis Ward's first season as head coach, losing to Newman Catholic 66-54 in the WIAA Sectional Final.

The Tigers are also kicking off their season on Monday after going 17-10 last season and falling to Three Lakes in the WIAA Regional Final. Jesse DeBauch is the team's do-it-all player, leading the team in scoring (17.5 ppg) and in the top two in rebounding and assists last year.

DeBroux debuts as head coach in Gibraltar girls opener vs. Gillett

The Gibraltar girls will open their season at home on Friday against Gillett with a new coach at the reins.

The Vikings ended last season playing some of their best basketball, winning two of their final three games and pushing a tough Niagara team that narrowly lost in the regional final. Following the departure of coach Devin Thomas, assistant coach Evan DeBroux took over the program that has won only five games combined over the past two seasons. When DeBroux leads the Vikings for the first time as the head coach, it will be a proud dad moment for Gibraltar athletic director and high school principal Jim DeBroux. The Vikings are led by Andie Schar, who was leading scorer and rebounder for the Vikings last year.

The Tigers went 15-10 last season, falling to Wausaukee 46-43 in the regional round. Cilena Guns will be back in the fold again this season after being second on the team in scoring with 12.6 ppg and leading the squad in rebounding at 6.6 rpg.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
