Gibraltar football returns top defensive players

It could be very difficult for opposing offenses to score against Gibraltar defense during the 2019 football season. The Vikings return many of their top defenders this season including the two guys who tied for the team-lead in interceptions last year. Both Brandon Stillman and Luke Steebs each intercepted three passes in 2018. In fact, both will be back in 2020 as well.

Stillman and Steebs were the answers to Saturday's trivia question. Congratulations to Patsy Michelsen for answering the question correctly! She is the winner of a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

Gibraltar goes down early

Gibraltar American Legion lost both of their games in the double header on Thursday night. Gibraltars bats started off cold the first game. The team had three runs on eight hits. Trev Reinhardt went three for four with three singles. They finally got through in the sixth inning, but by that time Ashwaubenon already scored too many runs for Gibraltar to handle. Gibraltar lost 4-3 in the first game. Marcus Reinhardt pitched five innings and gave up three runs. Gibraltars struggles continued into the second game, when they were blown out 15-1. They will look to bounce back next Tuesday when they play at the Green Bay Blue Jays. That game will be played at Joannes Park.

A look back at Gibraltar boys basketball playoff run

Now that the school year is over, it's time to look at some of the best moments from the past sports year. For Gibraltar, that means looking back at the magical run the boys basketball team made in the playoffs and a surprise regional championship. The Vikings were the fifth seed in the region and knocked off Lena, Florence and Phelps all by at least 29 points. A big key (and I mean big) for the team was the defense from big guys Evan Henry and Brady Ash who dominated the paint against a couple of prolific offenses in Florence and Phelps.

Those two big guys were the correct answer to Saturday's trivia question. Congratulations to Doris Moore for answering the question correctly! They will win a $25 certificate to the Sister Bay Mobil.

Jay Kita, coach of the Gibraltar American Legion team, says that the Gibraltar High School team has benefited from the athletes who play summer baseball.

Although the Gibraltar American Legion team takes a loss every now and then, Coach Kita believes that it helps develop the players for the high school level. The Gibraltar American Legion team plays Tuesday and Thursday nights throughout the summer.

Gibraltar football returns Alex Laughlin

Gibraltar will lose their starting quarterback but will keep their top offensive weapon for next season. Trevor Reinhardt quarterbacked the 2018 Vikings to a 7-4 record and his storied high school career is now over. Alex Laughlin will be back however and he was the team's leading rusher and receiver last season including over 1,100 yards receiving.

Bizarre events sink Vikings against Blue Jays

In a game filled with bizarre events, the Gibraltar Vikings came up just short of heading to the state tournament, falling 5-3 to Athens in the WIAA Division 4 Sectional Final in Crivitz.

The first break of the game went in favor after freshman third basemen Sam Lindenberg was able to temporarily force Seth Coker off the mound after a long but great at-bat. With Dayne Diethelm on the mound for the Blue Jays, Dominic Krauel fouled off a pitch that appeared to be caught by the first baseman Dakota Willhemssen, but the ball bounced off the fence with a second chance in Krauel in hand. He responded with run scoring triple and was later driven home by Alex Laughlin on his RBI double.

The Blue Jays, who had already made one two-run comeback earlier in the day in the sectional semifinal, scored on an errant throw by Luke Steebs and a drop third strike charged to catcher Andras Szakala. The Vikings would give up the lead on sacrifice squeeze bunt by Cobie Ellenbecker, but would get it back an inning later on another RBI hit by Laughlin. The Vikings would threaten to break the game wide open in the sixth inning, but came away empty handed after a couple miscues.

The Blue Jays would take the lead for good in the top of 7th after Szakala made a diving catch on a bunt, only to see his throw to third bounce off the base runner's helmet into left field. One batter later, the Blue Jays would score an insurance run on an RBI single.

Trevor Reinhardt followed up his perfect game with another gutsy performance in his final game as a Viking, going 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs but only one earned, and striking out five.

Big second inning sends Vikings to sectional final

Gibraltar only needed one inning to make its case for a sectional final appearance as they beat Niagara 9-2 in Crivitz.

Thirteen batters came up to bat in the second inning thanks to a handful of walks and hit by pitches collected by the Viking hitters. Doubles by Griffin Reinhardt and Luke Steebs drove in two runs a piece while bases loaded walks and hit by pitches accounted for the other tallies in the nine run inning.   Niagara scored their two runs on an RBI single by Elliot Peterson in the bottom half of the inning.

Steebs grinded it out for the victory, striking out three and giving up two runs in the complete game win.

Gibraltar faces Athens in the sectional final in Crivitz with a chance to qualify for the state tournament in Grand Chute on the line.

Gibraltar looks to clinch state berth on 105.1 The Viking

A successful year for Gibraltar athletics hopes to continue this afternoon when the Vikings baseball team takes on Niagara in the WIAA Sectional Semifinal. Many of the players on the team have already been a part of postseason runs this season including a quarterfinal appearance in the 8-man football tournament and a trip to the sectional semifinals in basketball. The Vikings have won their last two games by a margin of 21-3 after accepting a forfeit from Gresham in the playoff’s first round. It is very similar to last year’s regional championship team that also found its bats late in the season. Coach Jay Kita says the offense is coming around at the right time.

Tim Kowols will have the call beginning at 1:00 p.m. with the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. from Crivitz High School on 105.1 The Viking. The winner of the contest between the Vikings and the Badgers will face either Athens or Greenwood for a chance to play in the state tournament at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. You’ll be able to find coverage throughout the day on DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com and its Facebook page.
