Vikings baseball sweeps Bulldogs

The Gibraltar Vikings baseball team made the most of their trip to Peshtigo on Saturday, taking both ends of a doubleheader 9-4 and 9-6.

In game one, Jaxin Lindgren drew four walks and drive in two runs with a base hit. Mason Isaacson-Krueger also drove in two runs on a 2-4 day while Brady Kita and Aaron Brey also had multi-hit games. Brey picked the win in relief, allowing three runs (1 ER) and six hits while striking out five along the way.

In game two, the Vikings and Bulldogs traded runs back and forth, but insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings proved to be key. Brey drove in three runs while going 1-3 while Lindgren collected another two RBI. Kita and Lindgren had multi-hit games in the contest. Kita earned the win in game two, throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief while striking out two.

The Vikings will play on Tuesday against Sturgeon Bay in a doubleheader. The game will be carried live on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 4:15 with the pregame show.

Johnson's big day slays Crusaders for Vikings

Beckett Johnson's big day helped Gibraltar/Washington Island make the most of their long drive to Sheboygan Lutheran in an 8-1 victory.

Johnson went 2-4 with four RBIs on the day thanks to a RBI double in a six-run third inning that cleared the bases and an insurance run scoring single in the top of the seventh inning. Brady Kita and Aaron Brey also had multi-hit games, combining to go 5-8 and each driving in a run.

A combination of Kita, Brey, Bennett Isaacson-Krueger, and Cam Munao kept the Crusaders' offense in check, allowing just one run (1 ER) on five hits while striking out 10.

They have a doubleheader tentatively scheduled for Saturday at Peshtigo.

Vikings fall behind early in loss to Crusaders

Emilie Glocke was touched up for eight runs (7 ER) in just one inning of work as the Gibraltar Vikings lost 13-3 in five innings on Thursday.

The Vikings were already down 5-0 when Abby Jarosh took home on a passed ball to get the team on the scoreboard. Their fortunes would not improve as the Crusaders put up another five spot in the second inning to put the Vikings on the ropes. The Vikings would extend the game when Pam Prescott hit a RBI triple and later took home during Courtney Foy's at-bat, but two runs in the bottom of the third and another one in the fifth ended the game in the Crusaders' favor.

Foy and Celeste Ashley also had hits for the Vikings in the loss.

Sitte, Reisen leap their way to Door County Classic wins

The Gibraltar Vikings track teams posted plenty of top-three performances, but only two leaped to the top of the podium at Monday's Door County Classic.

Braden Sitte won the event with a personal best high jump of six feet. He also finished runner-up in the 100m, 200m, and long jump.

McKailey Reisen raced to a win in the 100m hurdles and leaped to the top spot in the high jump.

Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball splits with Southern Door

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings baseball team responded to a 4-1 loss in game one to the Southern Door Eagles with a 10-8 win in the second contest.

In game one, the Eagles' Will Jandrin kept the Vikings under wraps in his complete game. He allowed one run on six hits while striking out two. Jaxin Lindgren drove in that run in the second inning, but the Vikings' offense could not muster much else. Tyler Neinas led the Eagles' offensively, going 1-3 and driving in two runs in the win. Nick Beck, Braylon Berg, and Gage Geisel all had multi-hit games for the Eagles.

In game two, the Vikings went back and forth with the Eagles, exchanging runs in each of the first four innings. A four-run fifth inning for the Vikings had no answers from the Eagles, giving them a lead they would not relinquish. Both teams struggled in the field during the second game, combining for eight errors including five for the Eagles. Bennett Isaacson-Krueger went 2-4 with two RBi for the Vikings with Aaron Brey, Cameron Munao, Lindgren, and Beckett Johnson also driving in runs. Jandrin continued his success on the day in the second game, going 3-4 with three RBI. Isaac Baudhuin, Beck, and Geisel also drove in runs for the Eagles.

Vikings end decade-long streak against Cougars with win

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings beat the Coleman Cougars 8-1 on Friday, beating them for the first time since 2014.

The Vikings scored their first run in the opening inning and returned the next frame. They put the game away in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two errors to go along with their five singles to plate four runs in the frame. The Cougars mustered only run as an answer to the Vikings' big blow.

Brady Kita led the way with two RBI and three hits in four at-bats. He also stole four bases in the game. Bennett Issacson-Krueger, Aaron Brey, Jaxin Lindgren all had two hits while Liam Lindenberg and Cam Munao knocked in runs along with Issacson, and Brey. With a conference doubleheader against Southern Door on deck for Saturday, the Vikings used six pitchers in the win. Aaron Brey got the 'W,' but it was Liam Lindenberg that led the way with two innings of one-hit ball while striking out five.

The doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. in Fish Creek.

Gibraltar softball overpowered by Coleman

The Gibraltar softball jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but gave up at least three runs in each inning after that to lose to Coleman 19-4 in four innings on Friday.

The Vikings scored their two runs by taking advantage of three straight errors followed by a fielder's choice by Anna Jarosh and a ground-out by Addison Richmond. The Cougars would go on to abuse the Vikings' parade of pitchers, doing the most damage against Pam Prescott (1/3 innings, three hits, six runs, five earned) and Emilie Glocke (2/3 innings, two hits, four runs, four earned). The Vikings would score single runs in the third and fourth innings, only to be greeted by six more from the Cougars. Prescott, the Jarosh sisters, and Courtney Foy each collected hits in the Vikings' loss.  The Cougars had five players drive in at least two runs, led by Alyssa Hoida's four RBI.

The Vikings are back in action at home on Saturday when they host Southern  Door for a doubleheader at 11 a.m.

Vikings girls pile up wins at Peshtigo quad meet

On Tuesday, the Gibraltar girl's track team sprinted through tough conditions in Algoma for a second-place finish.

Hayden Knudson (200m and 400m), Aria Nordahl (1600m), and Mikala Gorham (long jump) posted wins for the Vikings, along with four runner-up performances.

The boys saw the 4x200m relay team of Sean Neal, Will Lecy, Giovanni Mercier, and Braden Sitte win, along with four other top-two finishes.

Vikings baseball shoot down Jets

Gibraltar/Washington Island did their work early on the baseball diamond in a 5-0 win over Roncalli on Monday.

An RBI double by Bennett Isaacson-Krueger, an RBI groundout by Cameron Munao, and a RBI single by Jaxin Lindgren staked the Vikings to an early 4-0 lead. Isaacson-Krueger added to the lead in the next inning with another double and his second hit. Brady Kita also had two hits, while Marshall Maltby and Mason Isaacson-Krueger also posted hits.

Kita didn't need much else as he went the distance, allowing six hits while striking out five. His defense behind him was also on point as they executed a pickoff play and turned three double plays.

Gibraltar's Sitte and Reisen sign National Letters of Intent

Ahead of the Denmark Cold Vike Invite on Saturday, Gibraltar's Braden Sitte and McKailey Reisen made their college plans official on Friday afternoon.

The pair signed their National Letters of Intent. Reisen will continue her track career at UW-Eau Claire, while Sitte will return to the gridiron as a defensive back at UW-LaCrosse.

Sitte set records in the other two phases of football, but his size and athleticism made him a great prospect to play defensive backfield for the Eagles. Coming off of two wins in the 100m and 200m earlier in the week, Sitte says it is all about using the track season to get faster so he can prepare for quick wideouts at the Division 3 level.

Reisen will get to build on her success in the hurdles and jumps events as she changes shades of blue for Blugolds next year. A state qualifier last year, Reisen is looking forward to competing at the next level.

Saturday's invite begins at 10:30 a.m. We will have coverage of the meeting on Saturday evening.

Vikings, Wolves split baseball twinbill

The Gibraltar Vikings baseball team rebounded from a 9-5 loss in game one to win game two 9-7.

In game one, the Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead through 1 1/2 innings thanks to RBI hits from Owen Dannhausen and Luke Rericha. The tide turned quickly after that as the Wolves scored nine of the next 11 runs to win the game. A two-run error, a two-run double from Carlson Leist, and run-scoring singles from Braeden Leist and Grant Vandervest proved to be the difference. Chase Romdenne, Charlie Prokash, and Braeden Leist had multi-hit games for the Wolves, while Aaron Brey went 3-4 with two RBI to lead the Vikings. The Leist brothers combined to allow five runs on nine hits and eight strikeouts. Brey took the loss as he allowed eight runs (3 ER) on 11 hits while striking out four.

Both teams scored in bunches in game two, with the Vikings having the final laugh for the win. The Vikings had three runs in the first and fifth innings and two in the fourth inning, while the Wolves scored a pair in the third, fifth, and sixth. Max Isaacson-Krueger led the offense for the Vikings, going 1-3 with three RBI. Cameron Munao drove in a pair on two hits, joining Max Maltby as the other Vikings with multiple hits. Carson Leist and Charlie Prokash each drove in two runs, with Leist going a perfect 4-4 from the plate and scoring two runs. Parker Lischka went 2-3 with an RBI, one of six Wolves players with an RBI. Bennett Isaacson earned the win, allowing seven runs (5 ER) across 6 1/3 innings while getting three punchouts. Charlie Prokash took the loss as he allowed five runs (4 ER) on six hits while striking out nine.

Second inning dooms Vikings baseball against Indians

The Gibraltar Vikings scored in the first inning before the Mishicot Indians took control in a 13-3 victory Thursday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.

The Vikings drew blood first with a first-inning RBI single by Owen Dannhausen at the bottom of the opening inning. The Indians responded in a big way in the top half of the second inning with eight runs, chasing starting pitcher Brady Kita had just 1 1/3 innings. The Indians would add two more runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth inning before the Vikings would score again. RBI knocks by Aaron Brey and Jaxin Lindgren ate into the Indians' advantage a little bit, but it was not enough to prevent the game from ending early due to the rout.

The Vikings will head down the peninsula on Friday to play a doubleheader against the Algoma Wolves. After opening the season at Capital Credit Union Park in a 10-3 loss to Green Bay Preble, they were nipped in their last game 2-1 by St. Mary Catholic on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.

Sitte, Reisen lead the way for Vikings at Sevastopol Quad

Braden Sitte and McKailey Reisen piled up the points for the Gibraltar track teams at Tuesday's Sevastopol quad meet.

For the boys, Sitte won the 100m with a personal record, the 200m with a season-best, took third in the long jump, and helped lead his relay team to a second place finish. WIll Lecy (100m, 200m) also earned top three finishes.

On the girls' side, Reisen won the high jump and 100m hurdles. Also cracking the top three for the Vikings were Bella Jones (100m, long jump), Hayden Knudson (200m), Rose Stackhouse (3200m), and Josie Martin (discus).

Vikings softball drops third straight

The Gibraltar softball team dropped its third straight on Monday by double figures, losing to Roncalli 13-0.

The Jets scored eight times in the second inning to put the game in danger of ending early. Three more runs in the fourth and a tally in the fifth made it three straight games the Vikings allowed at least 12 runs to start the season. They lost 12-2 to Boyceville and 12-1 to Columbus Catholic over the weekend. Three Jets players had multiple hits, and five drove in at least one run. The Vikings got hits from Pam Prescott and Abby Jarosh. Emile Glocke allowed 11 hits and 13 runs ( 4 ER) across five innings while striking out four.
