Down Jackson, Gibraltar boys fall to Two Rivers on the road

It was a close game all night, but the six point deficit at halftime would only be drawn to 5 as the low-scoring match resulted in favor of Two Rivers 41-37.

A zone defense ran by Two Rivers helped keep an explosive offense from the Vikings out of their rhythm.

Marco Jauregui contributed 15 off the bench and led Gibraltar's offensive threat. Leading all scorers, though, was Noah Shillcox with 17 including a perfect 5 of 5 from the free throw line.

Coach Travis Ward of Gibraltar liked the way his bench played in Jackson's absence, "our bench stepped up to give us some energetic defense and some timely buckets, but it was too much to overcome."

Next up, Sevastopol Thursday Dec. 18th at 7 p.m. It is their last game before the New Year.

Glocke goes off in Gibraltar girls win on 105.1 The GOAT

A second-half offensive outburst from two opposing players made for an exciting game in Fish Creek on Tuesday night as Gibraltar topped Sevastopol 50-44.

Head coach Justin Burress described the first half as the opening rounds of a boxing match, with both teams slipping jabs but unable to land a strong punch. Braeylyn Staats and Brynn Schartner challenged the Vikings underneath with their inside game, scoring six points apiece in the first half. The Vikings countered with their own inside play from Josie Martin and Azucena Jauregui.

It was Jauregui’s basket at the end of the first half that gave the Vikings a slim 23-21 lead at the break.

In the second half, Sevastopol’s Sydney Peterson and Gibraltar’s Emilie Glocke took it upon themselves to land the game’s biggest blows. Glocke hit five 3-pointers en route to a 16-point game, all of which came after the break. Peterson used her speed to her advantage to score all 11 of her points in the second half, helping the Pioneers build a six-point lead just past the midpoint of the period.

Glocke’s shooting and Jauregui’s output thrust the Vikings ahead, allowing them to play keep-away late to secure the win over their rivals.

In addition to Glocke’s 16 points, Jauregui scored 14, while Martin added seven and Megan Schar and Celeste Jauregui each contributed six. For the Pioneers, Schartner registered 10 points, while Staats complemented Peterson’s 11 points with nine of her own.

The Vikings are back in action Friday when they travel to Brussels to face Southern Door, while the Pioneers look to bounce back Friday against Kewaunee.

Gibraltar, Sevastopol look to snap skids on 105.1 The GOAT

Two teams looking to stop losing streaks will meet in Fish Creek on Tuesday when Gibraltar welcomes Sevastopol.

The Vikings have lost three in a row since beat NEW Lutheran on 105.1 The GOAT on December 2nd. That includes a 63-24 loss to Wabeno-Laona and a 69-16 loss to Peshtigo. Head Coach Justin Burress believes it is just some growing pains for the young squad in search of some confidence when things aren't going their way.

Another one possession game for Gibraltar

The second day of a back-to-back for the Gibraltar Vikings finished in a one-point loss to Florence Saturday, 60-59.

For the Vikings, it's their second one-possession game in as many days, as their first win came Friday night over Peshtigo 47-45.

Both teams were fighting for momentum going into the final few games of December, but this time, Gibraltar came out on the losing end. This time, it was the Vikings that saw a seven-point lead disappear in the final two minutes. The Vikings had a couple of good looks to retake the lead, but came up short in the end. Head coach Travis Ward felt that the team played flat after its exciting game against Peshtigo. We did a good job scoring inside and controlling the boards, but our offense sputtered in the latter part of the second half," Ward said. "We'll look to get back on track next week."

Kayin Jackson led all scorers with 36 points, with Wyatt Bultman adding 10 and Aaron Brey chipping in eight points in the loss. The Bobcats had three players in double figures, led by Bowen Spears' 24 points and Truth Setner's 19 points.

They'll now have a few days of rest before two games this week, at Two Rivers Tuesday and home Thursday versus Sevastopol. Both games will tip at 7 p.m.

Gibraltar pulls off close victory over Peshtigo

A sweet victory came for Gibraltar Friday night as they captured their first win of the season in tight fashion, 45–43. The Vikings defended their home court, locking down on the defensive end to pull off the two-point win.

The back-and-forth affair saw the Vikings take a 25-23 lead into the break. The Bulldogs held a lead late, but Marco Jauregui triggered two steals in the final three minutes, setting up Kayin Jackson to score six straight points to take the game away from its visitors.

"Our defensive effort was tremendous, battling all game and coming up big down the stretch," said head coach Travis Ward after the game. He applauded the defensive effort of Aaron Brey, who held one of the Bulldogs' top players, Dominik Baxter, to just five points. It’s the lowest point total allowed by Gibraltar this season and couldn’t come at a better time, as they play three more games in the next week before breaking until the New Year.

Jackson led the way with 24 points for the Vikings, with Jauregui adding 13 points. Levi Hodgins tallied up 19 points for the Bulldogs in the loss.

Gibraltar returns to its home court tomorrow for a contest with Florence at 2 p.m.

Free throw line betrays Vikings girls in loss to Bulldogs

The Gibraltar girls' basketball team could not get their offense going against the Peshtigo Bulldogs on Thursday night, falling 69-16.

The Vikings could not cash in on their opportunities to catch up with the clock stopped, making just eight of their 19 free throw attempts. The Bulldogs held the Vikings down in the field as well with Emilie Glocke's three-pointer the only shot made by the Vikings in the second half.

Glocke led the Vikings with seven points and Azucena Jauregui chipped in with four points. The Bulldogs, meanwhile, had four players in double figures with Skylyn Baxter leading the way with 14 points while Mya Boettcher and Jadyn Jashinsky each had 12 points.

The Vikings are back in action on Tuesday when they host Sevastopol. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 5:45 p.m. followed by the tip-off at 6 p.m.

Vikings boys' basketball hosting Bulldogs

The Gibraltar boys’ basketball team is at home this Friday against the Peshtigo Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are coming off a 67–64 win over Algoma. The Vikings are looking to rebound from their 85–68 loss to Oconto and pick up their first win of the season. Despite the defeat, several Vikings had strong performances, including Marco Jauregui, who scored a career-high 25 points. Wyatt Bultman added 16, and Kayin Jackson finished with 15.

The tip-off is at 7:00 PM.

Slow second half start dooms Vikings boys against Blue Devils on 105.1 The GOAT

The Oconto Blue Devils quickly turned a 40-34 advantage at the break into a 20-plus point lead en route to an 85-68 victory over the Gibraltar Vikings Tuesday night.

The hot shooting of Mason Colvin gave the Blue Devils the early double-digit lead thanks to four of the team's six three-pointers in the first half. Marco Jauregui and Kayin Jackson were able to answer the challenge, however, leading the Vikings on a 7-0 run that gave the Vikings a slim 28-26 lead halfway through the first half.

The Blue Devils took control of the game from there, scoring 32 of the contest's 44 points to build their lead back to over 20 points. The Vikings were able to trim the lead to 10 points behind two more threes from Jauregui and an offensive outburst from Wyatt Bultman that saw him score 11 of his 16 points in the second half. The Blue Devils' depth ended up being too much in the end, extending the lead back out to nearly 20 points and forcing both teams to empty the bench late.

The Blue Devils' were led by Colvin's 36 points with eight three-pointers made in the game. Dalton Bastien scored 15 points off the bench and Davis Knowll chipped in 10 points. Jauregui ended his night with 25 points for the vikings with Jackson adding another 15 points to go along with Bultman's 16 points.

The Vikings will play two more games this week, facing undefeated Peshtigo at home on Friday before traveling to Florence to face the Bobcats on Saturday.

Vikings boys search for first win in Oconto on 105.1 The GOAT

Two teams looking for their first win of the season will meet in Oconto Tuesday night (weather permitting) when Gibraltar make the trip around the bay to face the Blue Devils.

The Vikings enter the matchup 0-3 to start the year, including a 58-52 loss to NEW Lutheran last Thursday night. Marco Jauregui ended his night with 18 points while Kayin Jackson scored 10 points and Aaron Brey and Wyatt Bultman each chipped in eight points in the Vikings' loss. Head coach Travis Ward credited the Blazers with hitting big shots late while his team could not cash in on their opportunities. He added that his Vikings played with good energy and he is confident that they will learn from their mistakes as they look forward to next week.

The Blue Devils are 0-3 to start their campaign after an exodus of senior players from last year's regional finalists. One of those players was Carter Koch, who was stalwart on the Blue Devils for four seasons en route to setting the school record for scoring. They lost to Algoma 83-54 in their last game, with the Blue Devils' Lars Saldana leading the way with 13 points and three other players scoring at least seven points.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Vikings fall to Blue Devils

Second chance points fueled Oconto to the 45-32 win over Gibraltar Friday night in Fish Creek.

Head coach Justin Burress credited the Blue Devils' defense for altering or blocking their attempts to crawl ahead in the game.

The Blue Devils led 31-21 at the break thanks to Natalie Schlueter scoring 12 of her game-high 20 points in the first half. She was complemented by Bella Cashenet's seven points and five points from Kora Termaat. The Vikings' Josie Martin led the team with 10 points while four others scored four points and a pair registered three points.

Vikings burned by Blazers late

The NEW Lutheran boys basketball team was able to make shots late against Gibraltar to leave Fish Creek Thursday night with a 58-52 win.

The Vikings went into halftime with a slim 27-26 point lead thanks to 11 first-half points from Marco Jauregui, including a pair of threes. The Blazers' Hayden Schultz ensured a happy ride back to Green Bay for his team thanks to three three-pointers en route to 15 second-half points and a game-high 25 points. Three other players scored at least seven points for the Blazers in the win. Jauregui ended his night with 18 points while Kayin Jackson scored 10 points and Aaron Brey and Wyatt Bultman each chipped in eight points in the Vikings' loss.

Head coach Travis Ward credited the Blazers with hitting big shots late while his team could not cash in on their opportunities. He added that his Vikings played with good energy and he is confident that they will learn from their mistakes as they look forward to next week.

Vikings girls' basketball hosting Blue Devils

The Gibraltar girls’ basketball team is set to host the Oconto Blue Devils this Friday for a conference matchup. The Blue Devils recently suffered a 47–30 loss to Algoma. Meanwhile, the Vikings are coming off a strong 50–32 victory against Green Bay NEW Lutheran. In that win, Celeste Jauregui led the scoring with 14 points, followed by Emily Glocke with 12 and Josie Martin with 10.

Gibraltar head coach Justin Burress emphasized the team's focus on limiting offensive turnovers while creating more turnovers defensively and maintaining strong ball control. Burress also highlighted the need for the Vikings to adjust to Oconto's variable floor spacing, which changes depending on who is on the court.

Tip-off is at 7:00 PM.

Vikings boys' basketball facing Blazers

The Gibraltar boys’ basketball team is hosting the Green Bay NEW Lutheran Blazers this Thursday. The Blazers are coming off a 62-50 loss to Tigerton. The Vikings are also coming off a loss, falling to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 76-38. Kayin Jackson led the Vikings with 17 points.

In post-game comments, Vikings head coach Travis Ward called Elkhart Lake’s offense a “buzz saw,” adding they had “fast actions, quick reads, and accurate passes. On top of that, they didn’t seem to miss.” He also noted his team’s struggles: “We struggled to get good looks inside against their zone and weren’t knocking down threes consistently. We did a better job defensively in the second half, but still couldn’t find a rhythm offensively.”

The tip-off is at 7:00 PM.

Elkhart Lake continues strong start, downs Gibraltar

After nearly putting up 100 in their opening game, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah continued a strong start two games into the boys basketball season this time downing Gibraltar 76-38.

A big part of the win for the Resorters was a game-high 36 points from sophomore and team leader, Brayden Smith. He cashed in 8 of the teams 14 three-pointers.

Gibraltar didn't go down without a fight as Kayin Jackson stacked 17 with 3 from deep himself. However, the offensive juggernaut of the Resorters was too much to overcome.

Coach Travis Ward called Elkhart Lake's offense a "buzz saw" adding they had "fast actions, quick reads, and accurate passes. On top of that they didn't seem to miss." He noted some struggles of their own, "we struggled to get good looks inside against their zone and weren't knocking down threes consistently. We did a better job defensively in the second half, but still couldn't find a rhythm offensively."

They'll be back in action Thursday against NEW Lutheran.

Vikings girls extinguish Blazers on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar girls basketball team used a 13-2 run to open the second half to cruise to a comfortable 50-32 win over NEW Lutheran in Green Bay Tuesday night.

Both teams took a while in the first half to feel each other out, with more fouls and turnovers than field goals made in the opening minutes of the game. Thanks to point guard play from the Vikings' Cena Jauregui and the Blazers' Meredith Lemke-Scott, the teams' offenses eventually found their groove midway through the period, with Gibraltar's defense being the difference maker to take a 22-13 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Vikings took advantage of a Blazers' scoring drought to extend their lead by more than 20 points halfway through the period, with their half-court trap the star attraction. The turnovers paved the way for three Vikings players to reach double-figures, with Jauregui leading the squad with 14 points, followed by 12 points from Emilie Glocke and 10 points from Josie Martin.

Lemke-Scott paced the Blazers with 16 points.

After playing Washington Island in a scrimmage on Monday and the Blazers on Tuesday, the Vikings will play again on Friday when they host Oconto, which lost to Algoma 47-30 on Tuesday.

Vikings boys' basketball taking on Resorters

The Gibraltar boys’ basketball team is traveling this Tuesday to face the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters.

The Resorters are opening their season, while the Vikings are coming off a 66-54 loss to Northeastern Wisconsin Homeschool Athletic Association (NEWCHAA). Top scores for the Vikings were Kayin Jackson with 20, Marco Jauregui with 14, and Aaron Brey having 10.

The tip-off is at 7:00 PM.

Vikings girls visit Green Bay to face Blazers on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings girls basketball team make the trip south on Tuesday to face NEW Lutheran on the east side of Green Bay.

The Vikings tuned up for the matchup with a scrimmage against Washington Island after opening the season 1-2. The team has enjoyed balanced scoring during the opening stretch with five players scoring between five and seven points per game. While the team features great senior leadership from the likes of Josie Martin, Megan Gallant, Emilie Glocke, and Celeste Ashley, head coach Justin Burress is highly complimentary of his underclassmen like freshmen Azucena Jauregui and Ashlyn Lautenbach. The duo are ranked third and fourth on the team respectively on the team and handling the rigors of varsity basketball in stride according to Burress. In their last matchup, Gallant had nine points and Glocke chipped in eight points in a 72-45 loss to Suring.

The Blazers are 0-2 to start the season as they look to rebuild after its split with Providence Academy, which plays its first ever varsity game on Tuesday against Reedsville. With no seniors and just three juniors on the squad, the Blazers return less than six points per game from their team a season ago. Meredith Lemke-Scott has the highest scoring average from a season ago at 4.0 ppg with Addison Bruley (1.4 ppg) the only other returning scorer.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 5:45 p.m. followed by the tip-off at 6 p.m.
