The Gibraltar girls basketball team used a 13-2 run to open the second half to cruise to a comfortable 50-32 win over NEW Lutheran in Green Bay Tuesday night.
Both teams took a while in the first half to feel each other out, with more fouls and turnovers than field goals made in the opening minutes of the game. Thanks to point guard play from the Vikings' Cena Jauregui and the Blazers' Meredith Lemke-Scott, the teams' offenses eventually found their groove midway through the period, with Gibraltar's defense being the difference maker to take a 22-13 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Vikings took advantage of a Blazers' scoring drought to extend their lead by more than 20 points halfway through the period, with their half-court trap the star attraction. The turnovers paved the way for three Vikings players to reach double-figures, with Jauregui leading the squad with 14 points, followed by 12 points from Emilie Glocke and 10 points from Josie Martin.
Lemke-Scott paced the Blazers with 16 points.
After playing Washington Island in a scrimmage on Monday and the Blazers on Tuesday, the Vikings will play again on Friday when they host Oconto, which lost to Algoma 47-30 on Tuesday.
