Brey outduels Baudhuin in Vikings' win

Gibraltar/Washington Island's Aaron Brey and Southern Door's Isaac Baudhuin both went the distance, but it was the former that walked away with the 2-1 win on Tuesday.

The Vikings pieced together their two runs in the third inning when Luke Rericha and Liam Lindenberg found ways to score while Brey was up to bat. The Eagles got one of those runs back in the next half-inning on a RBI single by Drew Daoust.

Brey was just a hair better than Baudhuin, allowing one run (1 ER) on six hits while striking out two. Baudhuin allowed two runs (2 ER) on three hits while striking out six.

Brady Kita, Brey, and Luke Rericha each got one hit in the win for the Vikings while Jerek Valley and Wyatt Wilke each had two hits in the Eagles' loss.

Vikings baseball top 'Cats

A six-run fourth inning helped Gibraltar/Washington Island shut out Lena 10-0 in four innings on Thursday.

The Vikings got out to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning thanks to a RBI triple by Cam Munao and a run-scoring single registered by Bennett Isaacson-Krueger the frame's biggest blows. After scoring one more run in the second inning, the Vikings batted around in the fourth inning with RBI hits by Aaron Brey, Luke Rericha, and Hobbs Emerson leading the charge.

Isaacson-Krueger collected three hits to go along with his RBI while Emerson posted two hits along with his RBI. Four other Vikings players had hits in the game.

Brey went all five innings, allowing one hit and five strikeout,

Zephyrs speed past Vikings softball on 105.1 The GOAT

Two big innings by St. Mary Catholic led to the season-ending loss for Gibraltar/Washington Island softball on Thursday, losing the game 12-2 in five innings.

The Vikings struck first in the opening inning when Pam Prescott walked and stole two bases ahead of an RBI single by Megan Gallant. At the bottom of the inning, an illegal pitch call against starting pitcher Emile Glocke and a subsequent conversation led to things going south for the Vikings. Glocke lost the strike zone following the confrontation, leading to four walks, six runs, and an early exit from the game. Mia Glocke gave up three hits in the inning en route to a five-running inning for the Zephyrs, putting them up 9-1 on the Vikings.

The Vikings found the plate again in the third inning when Prescott reached on an error and made her way to second base. With Ella Clarke running in her place, Anna Jarosh's two-out single helped make it 9-2. The Zephyrs got that run back in the fourth inning, but the Vikings dealt their biggest scare in the top of the fifth. They had the bases loaded with two outs when Gabby Guerrero registered her eighth strikeout of the game to eliminate the Vikings' threat. The Zephyrs put the game away in the fifth inning when Emily Vogel lined a pitch to the fence with a person on base and scored on the inside-the-park homer.

Megan Gallant led the way with two base hits while Prescott and Anna Jarosh also reached base multiple times. The Vikings' season ends with a record of 3-14, saying goodbye to seniors Pam Prescott, Abby Jarosh, Anna Jarosh, and junior Courtney Foy, who plans to graduate in the winter.

Vikings softball begins WIAA Tournament run Thursday on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar/Washington Island softball team will turn its attention to the new season on Thursday when it travels to St. Mary Catholic in Neenah to open the 2025 WIAA Tournament.

The Vikings finished 3-13 on the season, ending the season on a high note with a split against NEW Lutheran. That is tied for the third-highest win total for the program since 2017. Manager Brandon Schmidt is proud of where the team has gone in year two of his rebuilding of the program, saying the team has become more competitive even in its losses. He is encouraged by the program's direction even if the record doesn't show it.

The Zephyrs' record is only marginally better at 4-15, going 1-9 in their last 10 games. Three of their four wins have been at home this season.

The winner of Thursday's game will travel to Algoma for the regional semifinal on Tuesday.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 4:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 4:30 p.m.

Vikings baseball win second straight blowout

After beating Clintonville on the island 11-4 on Saturday, the Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team followed it up with a 9-1 win over NEW Lutheran on Tuesday.

In Tuesday's victory, the Vikings scored five runs on the Blazers in the opening inning thanks to smart base running from Brady Kita and Fisher Grandy and RBI hits from Jaxin Lindgren and Hobbs Emerson. The Vikings added two more in the third inning when Emerson scored on a wild pitch and Kita singled in Liam Lindenberg. The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning, and the Vikings tacked on one more in the sixth inning. Owen Dannhausen led the way with three hits, while Kita and Lindenberg pitched in two hits apiece. Aaron Brey earned the win, but teamed up with Bennett Isaacson-Krueger and Lindenberg to allow one run (1 ER) on three hits while striking out 13.

In Saturday's win, the Vikings scored eight runs in the third inning to run away with the special home game on Washington Island. Jaxin Lindgren led the Vikings with three hits and three RBI while Aaron Brey went 2-3 with two RBI. Brey also earned the win in that game, allowing two runs (2 ER) on three hits in four innings.

Vikings baseball doubles up Indians ahead of island trip

A four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference as Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball returned to the win column with an 8-4 win over Mishicot on Friday.

After the two teams traded runs in the first inning, the Vikings scored twice in the third inning when Brady Kita scored on a wild pitch and Cam Munao scored on a wild pitch. The Vikings' biggest offensive inning came because of a bases-clearing double by Luke Rericha and a RBI single by Hobbs Emerson. The Vikings added one more insurance before the Indians rallied for three runs in the seventh inning. Kita, Munao, and Emerson each had two hits while Rericha led the way with three RBI. On the mound, Kita went the distances, allowing four runs (3 ER) on nine hits while striking out six.

The Vikings are back in action on Saturday when they hop on the Washington Island Ferry and play Clintonville at Washington Island Ballpark. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.

Vikings softball split against Blazers

The Gibraltar/Washington Island softball team earned its third win of the season as part of a twinbill split against NEW Lutheran on Thursday.

In their 12-8 loss, the Vikings committed eight errors, leading to six unearned runs. The Blazers scored in every inning but the fifth inning as they out hit the Vikings 15-8. The Vikings did score at least one run in each of the final four innings, including three in the fourth to answer a five-run frame by the Blazers and two runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Isla Fagundes, Celeste Ashley, and Mia Glocke each had two RBI in the loss while eight different Vikings registered at least one hit, including doubles by Emilie Glocke and Fagundes. The Glocke sisters combined to strike out five while allowing 12 runs (6 ER) on 15 hits and four walks.

In their 8-7 win, the Vikings nearly saw a 7-0 lead disappear before the game was called in the fifth inning due to storms. The Vikings took advantage of two errors and three hit batsmen to score three runs in the first inning and two walks and an error in the second inning to score another three runs. A fifth inning RBI flyout by Addison Richmond proved to be the game winner as a three-run rally by the Blazers in the bottom of the inning was cut short. Mia Glocke recorded both hits for the Vikings while Richmond drove in three runs.

Vikings baseball falls to Clippers, face Indians Friday

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team's busy week continues Friday and Saturday after the lost to Sturgeon Bay 7-6.

The Vikings found themselves in trouble early, as they gave up three runs in the second inning. A single by Bryce Plzak drove in two runs for the Clippers, and Patrick Haese took home on a double steal. The two teams traded three runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth, leaving the Vikings still trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Aaron Brey led off with a double and was helped along on an error before scoring on a single from Cam Munao. After two more singles from Jaxin Lindgren and Wyatt Bultman, Liam Lindenberg grounded out to score a run. With two men on, Plzak was able to induce Hobbs Emerson into a groundout to earn the save for Siggy Hansen.

The Plzak brothers combined for four base hits and three RBI in the win, with Hansen and Ethan Kratcha also getting on base with hits. Munao led the way for the Vikings with two hits and three RBI while Brady Kita registered two hits and one RBI.

The Vikings are back in action Friday afternoon when they host Mishicot at 4 p.m. The Indians come into the matchup 6-13 and losers of four straight. During the skid, they have been shut out twice. The Vikings will then take their bags, hop on the ferry and play Clintonville on Washington Island for an 11 a.m. tilt. The Truckers have struggled this season as they were a doubleheader split of Marinette away from losing their last 14 games.

Vikings baseball rebounds to earn split vs. Blue Devils

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team bounced back from a 2-0 loss in game one to win the second game 5-3 on the road at Oconto.

In game one, the game was scoreless until Joseph Bailey broke the 0-0 tie with a RBI single. It spoiled an otherwise strong start from Aaron Brey, who allowed two runs (2 ER) on eight hits while striking out four. Bennett Isaacson-Krueger, Cam Munao, and Luke Rericha registered the only hits for the Vikings in the loss.

In the second game, both teams wasted no time scoring, but it was the Vikings that scored at least one run in each of the first three innings, eventually taking a 4-2 lead. The Vikings grinded out the runs, scoring on two fielder's choices and an error. They added an important insurance run in the fifth inning when Jaxin Lindgren singled in Owen Dannhausen. Brady Kita, Aaron Brey, Owen Dannhausen, Lindgren, and Luke Rericha all registered hits in the game with Rericha collecting two RBI along the way. Kita earned the win while Brey came in relief for the save. The two combined to strike out four while allowing three runs (3 ER) across seven innings. Garrett Goetsch led the Blue Devils with two RBI.

Vikings softball swept by Blue Devils

The Gibraltar softball team was outscored 28-4 across two losses to Oconto on Tuesday, falling 13-3 in the first game and 15-1 in the second game.

In the first game, the Vikings held a 3-1 lead in the second inning after breaking a 1-1 tie in the second inning thanks back-to-back RBI singles from Pam Prescott and Abby Jarosh. Things went south from there as the Vikings gave up three runs in the third and eight more in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs ended game one early with one more run in the fifth inning as they took advantage of 13 Vikings errors to go along with their 11 hits. As a result, only three of her 13 runs given up were earned. Prescott and Jarosh each had two hits and combined for three RBI.

In the second game, the Vikings found themselves down 1-0 before giving up at least four runs in each of the next three innings. Abby Jarosh's single to drive home Pam Prescott accounted for the lone run scored for the Vikings. Prescott, Jarosh, and Megan Gallant each had one hit. Emilie Glocke gave up 15 runs on 12 hits, but another five Vikings errors led to all but five of those runs to be unearned.

Gibraltar splits in Crivitz on 105.1 The GOAT

It was tale of two games for Gibraltar/Washington Island on Saturday as they beat the host Wolverines 15-3 in five innings while falling to Wrightstown 10-2.

In game one, Bennett Isaacson-Krueger continued his strong pitching from his relief appearance on Friday, going four innings of scoreless baseball while striking out seven and scattering two hits. The Vikings were held in check for the first two innings before scoring three runs in the third inning, thanks in part to a two-run triple by Brady Kita.

In the fourth inning, the Vikings had 12 players go to the plate and seven runs come in thanks in part to RBI hits from Jaxin Lindgren, Luke Rericha, Hobbs Emerson, Kita, and Aaron Brey. The Vikings finished the scoring off in the fifth with five more runs with Kita and Brey tacking on more RBI. Kita ended the day with four RBI, Brey with three, and Cam Munao with two.

In game two, Brady Kita and Jacob Miller were tied up in their own duel with the Tigers scoring first on a Aidan Humphreys RBI single before the Vikings scored twice on a passed ball and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Jaxin Lindgren.

Things went south from there for the Vikings as the Tigers took the lead in the fourth inning when Will Schoenwalder and Ryan Leahy hit back-to-back extra base knocks to make it 3-2. The Vikings' bullpen and defense struggled in the back half of the game, allowing seven runs (5 ER) and walking six while weathering three errors. The Vikings posted one last threat in the sixth inning when they put two players on with no outs, but they could not convert the opportunity into runs. Munao had two hits in the second game while Lindgren registered the lone RBI.

Vikings fall to Storm ahead of Crivitz twinbill on 105.1 The GOAT

Gibraltar/Washington Island found themselves on the short end of a true pitcher's duel on Friday, falling to Kewaunee 2-1.

Both the Vikings' Aaron Brey and Brett Paulsen kept batters on their toes early, piling up strikeouts and scoreless innings until both pitchers ran into problems in the fourth inning. At the top of the frame, Paulsen led off with a double that was driven home on a double by Diesel Bosdeck. A throw home during the sequence allowed Bosdeck to scamper to third, which allowed him to score on a Waylon Delain single to make it 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, Brady Kita singled and advanced to third on a stolen base and a passed ball. A RBI groundout of Bennett Isaacson-Krueger made it 2-1. Both teams would threaten later in the game, but Brey and Paulsen would not allow it. In the top of the fifth, the Storm loaded the bases before Brey struck out Brady Pribek to keep the game at 2-1. The Vikings had their own opportunity at the bottom of the seventh with a bases-loaded situation, but an unassisted groundout to Delain secured the win for the Storm.

Paulsen and Bosdeck had two hits, while Delain and Bosdeck had the RBI. Luke Rericha was the lone Vikings player to reach base twice in the game, registering a single before getting hit by a pitch. Paulsen earned the win with a complete game effort, allowing one run on three hits while striking out 11. The combination of Brey and Isaacson-Krueger nearly matched it, striking out 14 while allowing two runs on five hits.

The Vikings will head to Crivitz for a twinbill on Saturday morning, playing the host Wolverines at 9:30 a.m. before playing Wrightstown at 11:30 a.m. The Wolverines are 9-6 on the season, throttling Wausaukee 20-3 on Monday. The Tigers are 9-5 with a 7-6 win over Marinette in their last game. Coverage of the game will air on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 9:15 a.m. followed by the first pitch.

Vikings, Storm renew rivalry on 105.1 The GOAT

Gibraltar/Washington Island and Kewaunee will end the school week in Fish Creek when the two teams meet on the baseball diamond Friday evening.

Aaron Brey took the loss on the mound for the Vikings, allowing five runs (5 ER) on seven hits across 3 2/3 innings. Bennett Issacson-Krueger finished the game off for Brey, allowing two runs (1 ER) on three hits.

The Storm held down Southern Door on Tuesday for a 2-0 win. Brett Paulsen took the hill for the Storm and was masterful, pitching 5.2 innings of perfect baseball before Braylon Berg bunted a single down the third baseline, Southern Door’s only baserunner of the game.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 4:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 5 p.m.

Vikings softball split high-scoring affairs with Clippers

The Gibraltar/Washington Island softball team scored 23 runs on Tuesday afternoon, but only walked away with a split against Sturgeon Bay, winning the first game 13-0 in six innings before dropping the night cap 13-10.

In the first game, a nine-run sixth inning help push the Vikings over the edge. The Vikings posted seven hits the frame with Pam Prescott's two-run triple serving as the biggest blow. Prescott, Abby Jarosh, and Anna Jarosh all posted three hits in the game while Prescott, Megan Gallant, and the Jaroshes all two RBI. Emilie Glocke earned the win from the circle with a six-inning no-hitter, striking out eight in the process.

The Vikings and the Clippers were locked in a see-saw affair in the second game, with the Vikings jumping out to a 5-0 lead before the Clippers snuck back into. They pieced together a three-run rally in the fourth inning without the benefit of a hit and scored one more in the fifth before getting nine across home plate in the seventh inning. In that inning, the Clippers took advantage of four Vikings errors by complementing them with five hits, including a two-run triple from Sophia Sternard. The Vikings tried crawling back in the seventh inning with two runs scoring on a Clippers error and one more crossing home plate on a Pam Prescott single, but they would get no closer. Prescott had another big game in the second matchup three hits including a homer to drive in three runs. Megan Gallant drove in a pair while the Vikings collected 10 hits. The Clippers, meanwhile, received multi-RBI performances from Sternard, Annika Schoeneman, Audrey Harrington, and Auna Anderson.

Vikings softball bit by Bulldogs

A seven-run fifth inning doomed Gibraltar/Washington Island in a 13-0 loss to Peshtigo.

Before the fatal inning, the Vikings had given up two runs in the second inning and four in the third. Mia Glocke was on the mound for all of it, allowing 13 runs (8 ER) on 12 hits while striking out six. Anna Jarosh's single in the bottom of the third was the lone offensive highlight of the game for the Vikings.

Brey's gem leads Vikings past Bulldogs on 105.1 the GOAT

Gibraltar/Washington Island's Aaron Brey had a no-hitter into the fifth inning and plenty of runs in the bank as the Vikings won their 11th game in a row, beating Peshtigo 8-1 Friday evening.

Brey helped his own cause in the first inning with a RBI groundout to drive in Brady Kita to make it 1-0 in the first inning. With Jaxin Lindgren and Liam Lindenberg on base, Kita followed a passed ball with a single that drove in a pair to make it 3-0. In the third inning, Brey and Owen Dannhausen hit back-to-back doubles to pad their lead even more to 5-0.

Brey's perfect game bid came to an end in the fourth inning on a throwing error, but two strikeouts helped keep the no-hitter and the shutout intact. In the bottom half of the inning, Brey made the Bulldogs pay for back-to-back errors with a double down the line to make it 7-0. The Bulldogs would finally get to Brey in the fifth inning when Ethan LaComb followed a Brayden Denowski single with a RBI double to put the team's first run on the board. The Vikings got the run back in the sixth inning when Lindenberg drove Cam Munao in on a sacrifice fly. Kita finished the game off for Brey in relief, striking out a pair to secure the win.

Kita, Brey, and Dannhausen had two hits apiece in the game, with Kita and Brey boasting multi-RBI games. Not lost on Brey was the impact of the defense behind him while on the mound, pointing Bennett Isaacson-Krueger's defense at short and a couple of highlight reel grabs from Munao.

On Tuesday, the Vikings are back in action when they travel to Sturgeon Bay to face the Clippers, which beat Southern Door on Friday, 6-2. Tim Kowols will have the call from Sturgeon Bay on 105.1. The GOAT will begin at 4:15 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 4:30 p.m.
