The Gibraltar Vikings cross-country team completed its 2022 campaign with great races at the Manitowoc Lutheran sectional.
Betsy Lecy broke 22 minutes for the second race in a row to lead the Vikings with a 17th-place finish and a 21:51 5K time. The Vikings finished in 15th place with 368 points.

In a heavyweight match-up between the Peninsula Conference's top two teams, it was Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas delivering the knockout blows in the third quarter of a 30-21 victory over the Gibraltar Vikings in the first round of the WIAA Eight-Player Playoffs.
The Vikings stood firm in the game's first two quarters, forcing the Titans into a number of failed fourth-down conversions and a scoreless second frame. Braden Sitte opened the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown only to be answered by the Titans' Sam Marquardt passing to Sidney Sylvester to make it 8-6 at the end of one quarter.
Sitte would score the only touchdown of the second quarter on a one-yard keeper to send the Vikings to a 13-8 halftime lead. Hayden Reetz picked off a Marquardt pass that stemmed off one of the Titans' second quarter drives.
Paired with an injury to Sitte late in the second quarter, the Titans turned up the pressure in the third quarter which would change the tide for the rest of the game for the Vikings. Marquardt immediately turned a blocked punt into a 16-yard touchdown run, giving the Titans a lead they would not give up. He would also score on a 58-yard quarterback to keeper to make it 22-13.
The Titans would put the game on ice early in the fourth quarter with Marquardt's fourth total touchdown, this time on a 13-yard rush. The Vikings gave their fans two lasting memories in the game's final minutes. With all the seniors on the field, an injured Sitte retook the field to kneel the ball, allowing a curtain call for the over 10 players that played their final home game. William Lecy would add one last bright spot, turning a Giovanni Mercier screen pass into a 64-yard touchdown for the final score of the game.
The Vikings ended their season 8-1 and the champions of the Peninsula Conference.
The damage was done in the match's first 40 minutes as Gibraltar/Sevastopol fell to Winnebago Lutheran 2-0 on Thursday.
Louis Schultz scored three minutes in, and his teammate Seth Schroeder registered his goal and his second point on the day in the 38th minute to send the Vikineers packing just one game into the WIAA Tournament. The Vikineers were only able to get three shots on target, all ending in saves by Nick Russ.
The Gibraltar Vikings and the Lena/St. Aquinas Titans played an all-time classic in their first match-up, and they will renew with even more on the line Friday night in Fish Creek.
The two teams went a combined 15-1 during the regular season, with the Titans suffering their only blemish in a 54-50 barn burner in Lena. The two teams traded touchdowns the entire game except for the second quarter when the Vikings scored on four consecutive drives to turn a 30-7 deficit into a 33-30 lead at the break. Sam Marquardt ran for 265 yards and five touchdowns for the Titans while adding another score through the air, but he was matched by a six total touchdown performance by Brady Kita.
The two teams were the Peninusula Conference's top two scoring offenses (GIB 351 L/STAA 319) and scoring defenses (GIB 84 L/STAA 91) during the regular season. The winner of the game will take on the victor in the Wabeno/Laona and Florence matchup next Friday night.

The Gibraltar Vikings cross country teams will travel to Manitowoc Lutheran for their sectional race on Saturday.
The girls team finished the conference season in 8th place, with a total of 167 points throughout the season. The team was led by senior Betsy Lecy, who was able to log a Personal Record in her most recent race at the Packerland conference meet. Lecy ran a 21:35, which was good for 6th place in the girls standings. Five of the seven runners set Personal Records at that meet.
The boys team has one runner in Logan Mittermann. He recently set his PR as well, at the Pioneer Invite on September 29th, running a time of 18:17.
The team will run at Meadow Links Golf Course in Manitowoc.
The Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer hits the road for its WIAA Tournament opener on Thursday as they face Winnebago Lutheran Academy.
The Vikineers finished the regular season 6-10-2 and enter the match on a three-game losing streak. Two of those losses come against NEW Lutheran, which they played four times on the year (0-3-1).
Winnebago Lutheran Academy has won three of its final four matches, including a 1-0 victory over Mayville. Seth Schroeder scored the game-winner for his 31st goal of the season.
Kick-off is set for 4:30 p.m,
The Peninsula Conference season has wrapped itself up, with the first round of the 8-Player postseason being set to be played on Friday. The conference has two teams in the postseason this year, with those two teams set to face off week one.
Gibraltar was able to will their way to the top of the conference, after beating Lena/St Thomas Aquinas 54-50 three weeks ago. That was enough for the Vikings to clinch the Peninsula conference after defeating Oneida-NEW Lutheran-Providence and Sevastopol the last two games of the season.
Algoma finished the season in third place in the Peninsula conference with a 5-2 record, but they were ruled ineligible for the postseason due to the size of enrollment being larger than the allowed number.
Sevastopol finished the season 3-4 in Peninsula play, and that was enough to land them a fifth place finish.

The Gibraltar Vikings finished a perfect regular season Friday night with a 47-0 victory over the Sevastopol Pioneers in Institute. The first quarter was an offensive struggle as both teams could not sustain drives and the Pioneers were able to force a pair of turnovers on fumbles. The Pioneers would suffer a back-breaking turn of event when a perfectly executed screen pass from Frankie de Young to Alex Andreae scored a touchdown for the Pioneers, but it was called back due to a penalty. The Vikings would break through in the second quarter when Braden Sitte picked up where Brady Kita left off with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Giuseppe Mercier to make it 7-0. Sitte would rush for two more scores from one and 20 yards out to take the Vikings to the half up 21-0.
The Vikings would not let up from there as Sitte ran for a long touchdown and threw for another on two consecutive plays for the offense to put the Vikings up 35-0. Sitte would have cap off the quarter with another long touchdown run to make it 41-0 at the end of three quarters. William Lecy took one-yard into the endzone midway through the fourth quarter to make it the final score of 47-0. Marshall Maltby picked off a de Young pass for one of the many defensive highlights for the Vikings in the victory.
The Vikings finish the season 8-0 as the conference champions and will have to wait until 10 a.m. to learn the who, the where, and the when of their playoff matchup. The Pioneers fell to 3-5 on the season.
Two Gibraltar runners finished in the top 10 of their respective races at the Packerland Conference meet hosted in Fish Creek on Thursday.
Logan Mittermann took sixth overall with his time of 18:44, while Betsy Lecy's personal-record time of 21:34 was good for a sixth-place finish. Five of the Vikings' six girl runners set at least a season record and four posted a personal best to help the team to an eighth-place finish with 167 points.

The Gibraltar Vikings can check off another achievement this season Friday night when they pay a return visit to Sevastopol.
The Vikings can have a perfect regular season with a victory in Institute after beating NEW Lutheran/Oneida Nation last week 48-6. Giuseppe Mercier started his homecoming reign with six touchdowns on the ground to win the game, but the Vikings did lose Brady Kita and Will Friedenfels for the season to injuries.
The Pioneers can improve to 4-4 on the season with a victory after losing last week to Algoma 64-20. Logan Schuh scored three touchdowns while throwing for 113 yards and rushing for another 79 yards on the ground. Atlee Manson and Cesar Sandoval are proving to be a strong 1-2 punch rushing the ball as well, with both running for 300 yards.
A blocked kick returned for a touchdown was the only points scored by the Pioneers in the Vikings' 42-6 win in the season opener. Kita threw for three touchdowns to three different receivers, while Rylan Caldecott rushed for a pair of scores in the victory.

The kings and queens of Packerland Conference cross country will be decided in Fish Creek on Thursday.
Algoma, Gibraltar, Kewaunee, Oconto, Peshtigo, Providence Academy/NEW Lutheran, Sevastopol, Southern Door, and Sturgeon Bay will all toe the line and tackle Gibraltar's cross-country course with pride and a crown on the line.
The Kewaunee boys and the Sevastopol girls won last year's team titles, while graduated senior Cameron Cullen of Kewaunee and current sophomore Holly Pesch of Peshtigo won the individual title in 2021.
Things could be set up well for Southern Door's Ben Grota and Brooke Strege, who were the top conference finishers in the Chief Kahquados Invitational held earlier this year on the same course.
The first races begin at 3:45 p.m.
With its threat of stealing the Packerland Crown over, the Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer team turn their attention to the playoffs with a match against NEW Lutheran.
The Vikineers have played about as .500 as you can get, going 2-3-2 in their matches since September 22nd. They were eliminated from contention for the conference title with their 2-0 loss to Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday.
The Blazers are playing well down the stretch, closing their season with a 4-1-1 mark, with their only defeat coming at the hands of the Clippers.
The two teams have already played each other three times this season, with the Blazers winning the two tournament matchups and playing to a scoreless draw in their conference fixture.
The two teams will play each other in Fish Creek at 6:30 p.m.
The Gibraltar Vikings volleyball team hits the road Tuesday for a match against Peshtigo.
The Vikings have dropped five straight matches, including two heartbreaking 3-2 defeats at the beginning of it. They lost to Sevastopol 3-1 in their last match on Thursday.
The Bulldogs have four of their last six matches, including a 3-2 mark at the Oconto Falls Invite. After two hard losses, the Bulldogs rebounded against conference rival NEW Lutheran and won 2-1.
Opening service is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Gibraltar Vikings paid a steep price for their 48-6 victory over the NEW Lutheran/Oneida Nation United Friday night in Fish Creek.
The United shocked the Vikings' defense with a long, clock-consuming drive that took almost half the quarter to complete before Reid Nelson found Griffen Steffel for the early touchdown.
The Vikings answered quickly with Brady Kita found Will Friedenfels for a 33-yard score to take a 7-6 lead into the second quarter. Giuseppe Mercier took over from there, scoring four touchdowns in the second quarter from 16, 3, 25, and 20 yards out to make 28-6 at the half. Mercier's fourth touchdown came after a lengthy delay due to a season-ending injury to Kita.
After being crowned homecoming king, Mercier capped off his player of the game performance with touchdown runs in the third and fourth quarters to send the Vikings to their seventh victory.
The Vikings will try to clinch the Peninsula Conference with a perfect record next week when they travel to Insitute to play county rival Sevastopol.
The Gibraltar Vikings represented the school well Thursday afternoon at the Brillion Cross Country Invitational.
Betsy Lecy led the girls' team with a 5K time of 22:01, which was good for 23rd out of 73 runners. The Vikings girls were one runner short of being able to score as a team.
The Gibraltar Vikings hope to give its homecoming revelers something to cheer about when they welcome Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran to Fish Creek on Friday.
The Vikings delivered one of their most thrilling victories in recent memory last Friday night when they returned from a 30-7 second quarter deficit to win 54-50 to claim the sole lead in the Peninsula Conference. Brady Kita accounted for six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) and just shy of 380 all-purpose yards in the win. Marshall Maltby and Jack Duffy led the way for the defense with 13 tackles a piece.
The United has struggled to keep up with teams this season, being outscored 170-56 in its five conference games as it looks for its first victory. Reid Nelson leads the offense for the United, throwing for over 470 yards and rushing for another 200. They lost to Algoma in a palindromic event 42-24.

The Gibraltar Vikings will welcome in the Sevastopol Pioneers for a Packerland conference volleyball matchup Thursday night.
Gibraltar (1-5 Packerland, 5-14 Overall), is coming off of a 3-0 sweep to the Southern Door Eagles, but have been playing some good volleyball as of late. The Vikings have either kept the matches close, or have won their last 4 matches outside of the Eagles match. It will be the Vikings homecoming match, so they will be looking to come out on top in front of a very large crowd.
Sevastopol (4-2 Packerland, 19-8 Overall), has been at the top of the conference the whole season, and find themselves in a tie for second place with two other teams, and only out of first place because of not playing the same amount of games so far. With only losses to the two first place teams in Peshtigo and NEW Lutheran, the Pioneers are in a good spot with only two matches left in the conference season.
The match is set to begin at 7:00 P.M. in Gibraltar.
The final race before next week's Packerland Championships will take Gibraltar to Brillion for an invitational on Thursday.
The Vikings will race against Brillion, Chilton, Hilbert, Hortonville, Kaukauna, Manitowoc Lincoln, Mishicot, Oostburg, St. Mary Catholic, Valders, and Winneconne at Deer Run Golf Course beginning at 4 p.m.
Logan Mittermann hit a personal-best 18:17 at the 5K distance at last week's Pioneer Classic in Sturgeon Bay. Betsy Lecy led the girls with a time of 22:26, but Abigail Demeuse followed Mittermann's personal record with one of her own.
The Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer team will kick off homecoming week with a match against Peshtigo Monday night.
The Vikineers were knocked from the top of the Packerland table on Thursday with a 3-0 road loss to Algoma. They escaped their match against Ashwaubenon with a 1-1 draw.
The Bulldogs have lost their last three matches by a combined score of 23-1. That includes a 6-0 defeat to NEW Lutheran.
Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.
