The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings will get a chance to avenge their 2023 regional final loss to Pacelli and their sectional semi-final loss in Rosholt in one swoop next week after holding on to beat Reedsville 4-2 in the regional final on Thursday.

The Vikings got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when Cam Munao drove in Brady Kita with a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. The Panthers would answer in their half of the second inning. Ayden Sebo singled Logan Murtz but ran themselves out of the inning when Mason Isaacson-Krueger delivered a strike home to throw out Ben Prochnow when Sebo got caught in a run down.

The Vikings would take control in the third inning when Kita and Bennett Issacson-Krueger singled and were later driven in on sacrifice flies by Aaron Brey and Owen Dannhausen.

Munao would inject some enthusiasm into the dugout and the crowd when he took pitcher Levi Korstad deep for his first home run.

Korstad would keep the Vikings under control for the rest of the game, not allowing a run the rest of the way despite allowing five baserunners. Brey would get touched for one more run, but Kita would shut the door over the final 1 1/3 innings. He allowed two hits in the top of the seventh but induced three fly ball outs to help the Vikings clinch their second regional championship in three years.

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team is one win away from a regional championship and a rematch against Pacelli in Rosholt, but they first have to face Reedsville in Fish Creek on Thursday.

The Vikings scored the only run in a 1-0 win over Tigerton on Tuesday afternoon in Fish Creek as they were held to just one hit. The Vikings scored their only run in the second inning when Beckett Johnson recorded an RBI groundout to bring home Jaxin Lindgren. Bennett Isaacson-Krueger ended the game with two strikeouts and ended the afternoon with nine strikeouts after coming in to relieve Brey after seven batters.

After being rained out on Tuesday, the Panthers clinched their trip to Fish Creek with a 6-1 victory over Rosholt on Wednesday. The Panthers entered the tournament on a four-game skid and were losers of nine of their last 11 games. They have since won their two tournament games by a combined score of 16-1.

The heat sheets are out, and now it is time for more than a dozen athletes from Door and Kewaunee counties to head west for the WIAA State Track Meet hosted by UW-LaCrosse.

Kewaunee's Hannah Miller (400m, 800m, and triple jump), Christopher Cullen (1600m), Maddix Mueller (triple jump), Braxton Riha (shot put), Kemper Robinson (discus), and the boys' 4x200m relay, Luxemburg-Casco's girls' 4x200m relay team, Grace Seering (300 hurdles), Sturgeon Bay's Ella Tarkowski (100m), and Gibraltar's McKailey Reisen (high jump, 100m hurdles) and the girls 4x100m relay all qualified for the two-day event. 

Reisen is returning to the state stage after qualifying for last year's event. She says she is even more excited to qualify for this year's state meet because of her experience last year and the fact that she gets to go through it all with her relay team, which includes freshman Hayden Knudson, sophomore Bella Jones, and junior Aria Nordahl.

It will be the first time to state for Knudson, Jones, and Nordahl, who says they have leaned on Reisen and their coaches for advice.

Both teams had limited hits, but Gibraltar/Washington Island scored the only run in a 1-0 win over Tigerton on Tuesday afternoon in Fish Creek.

The first three Tigers reached base in the game, but two were retired by Brady Kita catching them before they could steal second base. They would reach base again in the second inning before Aaron Brey and Bennett Isaacson-Krueger set down the next 12 Tigers in a row. The Vikings found ways to reach base, but a sixth-inning single by Owen Dannhausen was the only hit they would muster in the game as the Tigers' defense held strong. The Vikings scored their only run in the second inning when Beckett Johnson recorded an RBI groundout to bring home Jaxin Lindgren.

Things got dramatic for both teams in the sixth inning. The Tigers would have men on second and third with one out before Isaacson-Krueger struck out Blake Steinbach and forced Logan Wanta to fly out to Lindgren.

Dannhausen's hit and two walks would load the bases, but Wanta relieved Caleb Dahlstrom and forced Liam Lindenberg to ground out to end the frame fruitless. Isaacson-Krueger ended the game with two strikeouts and ended the afternoon with nine strikeouts after coming in to relieve Brey after seven batters.

The Vikings will have to wait at least one more day to learn their opponent after Reedsville and Rosholt had their game called due to rain.

The Gibraltar/Washington Island baseball team opens their tournament run on Tuesday with a visit from Tigerton.

The Vikings went 5-3 in its final eight regular season games, excluding an exhibition loss to Kewaunee on the season's final day following a win in a resumed game against the Storm that clinched them a share of the conference championship. The team had six players named to the All-Packerland Conference squads, including Brady Kita (catcher), Aaron Brey (infield), and Camero Munao (outfield) to the first team. Bennett Isaacson-Krueger (2nd team, infield), Jaxin Lindgren (HM, outfield), and Owen Dannhausen (HM, utility/DH) were also recognized.

The Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak when they edged Hilbert 4-3 in their first-round matchup last Thursday.

It took nearly three weeks to complete, but Gibraltar/Washington Island can say they are the Packerland Conference champions after winning the second game against Kewaunee  4-3 in 11 innings.

The game started 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning, but it would not be until the bottom of the 11th before either team would score. Marshall Maltby would open the inning with a walk and Liam Lindenberg's single would move him to second. With two outs, Bennett Issacson-Krueger singled to third to bring home Maltby in walk-off fashion. The win allowed the Vikings and Algoma to tie the Storm at the top of the Packerland Conference standings.

The two teams played an exhibition game to finish off the evening with the Storm taking the match-up 4-2. The Storm jumped on Aaron Brey and Isaacson-Krueger for three runs in the first inning and another tally in the second. The game's big blow came from the bat of Brett Paulsen, who hit a three-run homer in the first inning to put the Storm in position to win the game. An error set up the Storm's fourth run. The Vikings would score one run in the fifth thanks to a Storm error and scored again in the seventh on a fielder's choice hit by Magnus Purinton. Brady Kita, Isaacson-Krueger, and Maltby each had one hit in the game while Brey posted two. Ethan Paplam added another two hits for the Storm in the victory.

McKailey Reisen will not be alone at next weekend's state track meet as Gibraltar will be represented in three events thanks to their success at the Rosholt sectional.

The girls 4x100m relay qualified with a personal best time of 52.18 to come in fourth place. Reisen qualified in high jump with a jump of 5'1 to come in third place and she took second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.16. Braden Sitte paced the boys' squad with a top-10 finish in the high jump.

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings and the Clintonville Truckers combined for nearly 30 hits on Saturday, but the visitors came away with the 12-9 victory on Washington Island.

The Truckers opened the game with two runs in the first inning, but the Vikings answered with two runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. The problem for the Vikings was the fourth inning when the Truckers batted around and scored nine runs to put them on their heels. The two teams would trade runs in the sixth, but the Vikings were still short on runs to allow the Truckers to ferry back with the win. Ten Vikings registered hits, including three from Aaron Brey and two from Brady Kita. Jaxin Lindgren, Brey, and Bennett Isaacson-Krueger drove in two runs apiece in the loss. Andy Lederer led the Truckers offensively, going 2-4 with a double and a home run while driving in five. 

Gibraltar/Washington Island's baseball team was just as dangerous with their patience as they were with their bats in their doubleheader sweep of NEW Lutheran on Friday, beating them 14-1(six innings) and 12-0 (five innings).

In game one, the Vikings struck first when Aaron Brey singled home Brady Kita to make it 1-0, only to have the Blazers tie the game up two innings later in the third and Evan Monfrie doubled home a run. The Vikings would bat around in three consecutive innings, scoring three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth, and six in the sixth to put the game away early. Kita reached base all five times, hitting a pair of singles and drawing three walks. Cam Munao and Jaxin Lindgren also collected two hits in the win. The Vikings were just as potent hitting the ball as they were drawing walks in the opener, collecting 11 of each in just six innings. Brey earned the win on the mound, allowing one run (0 ER) and four hits over four innings while striking out seven. Griffin Steffel struck out 10 Vikings in his 4 1/3 innings, but was victimized by three Blazers errors that led to five of his seven runs given up to be unearned.

Game two was similar for the Vikings as they drew five walks while banging out nine hits in four offensive innings. Sam Hillmann and Bennett Isaacson-Krueger were dueling early before the Vikings' offense came alive again. They would bat around in the third and fourth innings, piling up five and seven runs respectively. Kita and Owen Dannhausen had three hits while Brey had two hits. Isaacson-Krueger went the distance for the Vikings, allowing three hits across five innings while striking out seven batters.

POSTGAME INTERVIEW WITH HEAD COACH JAY KITA

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings will start their busy weekend on Friday with a trip to Green Bay to visit NEW Lutheran for a baseball doubleheader.

The Vikings finished off a contest against Sevastopol on Tuesday. The Vikings started out with a 5-0 lead, but they outscored the Pioneers 8-1 the rest of the way. It was the Vikings' third straight win, and Aaron Brey, who had four RBI in the win, again delivered a strong performance. 

The Blazers have struggled to a 1-15 record, failing to win since a 10-0 win over Goodman/Pembine on April 9th. They have scored only one run in five games while giving up at least ten runs in their last six contests.

Tim Kowols and Eric Fischer will have both ends of the doubleheader, beginning with the first pitch at 4 p.m. The pregame show will start at 3:45 p.m. on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork. Some players will have a road trip in the other direction on Saturday when Gibraltar/Washington Island hosts Clintonville on Washington Island beginning at 11 a.m.

A big inning proved fatal for the Gibraltar/Washington Island softball team once again in Thursday's 11-6 loss to Roncalli in the opening round of the WIAA Tournament.

The Vikings struck first in the opening frame with two runs thanks to RBI singles from Abby Jarosh and Courtney Foy. The lead was short-lived as the Jets plated three in their half of the first inning thanks to four hits. The Jets soared to a big lead in the third inning as they sent 12 to the plate, scoring seven times to stretch a 3-2 lead to a 10-2 advantage. However, the Vikings did not go down easy, as they nearly batted around themselves in the fourth inning. The inning's big blow came when Pam Prescott cleared the bases with a triple, driving in Ashlyn Dejardin, Emma Daubner, and Megan Gallant. Prescott came around to score on an RBI groundout off the bat of Jarosh to cut the deficit to four. The Jets would score their final run on an infield fly rule that garnered some confusion among the Vikings players in the fifth inning.

Prescott led the team with three hits, while Gallant reached three times via the walk. Emile Glocke went the distance for the Vikings, allowing all 11 runs on 15 hits while striking out four.

Despite winning just once in his first season, head coach Brandon Schmidt is encouraged by what he has on his team, with most players available to return next season.

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings would like another matchup against their Packerland foes in Algoma. Still, they will have to get past the Roncalli Jets on Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the WIAA Softball Tournament.

The Vikings enter the matchup on an eight-game losing streak, though they narrowly missed out on snapping that streak on Tuesday in a 7-6 loss to Crivitz. In that game, the Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, only to find themselves down 6-2 halfway through. They tied up the game at six after consecutive two-run innings before the Wolverines won in walk-off fashion in the seventh. The Vikings registered 10 hits in the loss, including four from Courtney Foy and two apiece from Megan Gallant and Ashlynn Dejardin. Foy also drove in three of the six runs for the Vikings, with Anna Jarosh and Dejardin contributing to the other RBI. 

The Jets were narrowly better at 2-15 on the season and 0-12 in their conference. One of those wins came against the Vikings on April 8th, when Kamryn Schnur doubled, tripled, and knocked in four runs while Gretchen Kapic struck out 11 and allowed just two hits in a 13-0 win in Fish Creek.

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings defeated the Sevastopol Pioneers 13-1 on Tuesday in a game suspended in April due to darkness at 5-0.  Aaron Brey led the Viking attack with four RBIs.

Bennett Isaacson-Krueger picked up the win for Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings. Allowing no runs or hits over three innings while striking out five and walking one.  Brady Kita got the save in the final four innings, allowing just one unearned run. Chase Haberli took the loss for the Pioneers.

Owen Dannhausen, Brey, and Liam Lindenberg each had two hits for the Vikings, who benefited from eight walks in the game.

Gibraltar will now travel to NEW Lutheran for a doubleheader on Friday in a game that will be broadcast on 105.1 The Goat.

Two of Gibraltar's biggest hitters on the track and field scene remained that way at Monday's Packerland Conference Track Championships at Algoma.

McKailey Reisen had a personal record on the high jump and a season best in the 100m hurdles to take those events. She also joined Bella Jones, Hayden Knudson, and Aria Nordahl on the winning 4x100m relay team. On the boys side, Braden Sitte leapt to first place in the high jump and a thrid place finish in the long jump.

Aaron Brey helped Gibraltar/Washington Island sweep the Oconto Blue Devils 7-0 and 5-4 in two different ways on Saturday.

In game one, Brey pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball with seven strikeouts, leaving his battery mate Brady Kita to finish the job to clinch the game one victory.  The Vikings scored early and often, jumping out to a 6-0 lead after three innings and adding another tally in the sixth inning for good measure. Kita and Liam Lindenberg each scored two runs in the victory, while Bennett Isaacson-Krueger and Lindenberg posted multi-hit games.

In game two, Brey did it with his bat, registering three hits and two RBI in his four plate appearances. Owen Dannhausen helped the Vikings get off to a good start with an RBI single in the first inning, while Jaxin Lindgren capped off a three-run rally in the third inning with a double. The Blue Devils would tie the game in the fourth inning, scoring three runs with two outs. The Vikings would reclaim the lead in the fifth inning when Brey, Dannhausen, and Cam Munao all singled before Lindenberg drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home what ended up being the game-winning run.

Drama would fill the seventh inning as the Vikings had two men on, desperately trying to extend their one-run advantage. A certain hit by Kita was robbed in right field on a sliding grab by Devon Bostwick to preserve the one-run deficit for the Blue Devils.

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings will have a short turnaround after losing to Crivitz on the road Friday 7-2.

The  Vikings struck first with a run in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Owen Dannhausen to bring home Brady Kita. The Wolverines would score three times in the second inning and answer a third-inning RBI single by Aaron Brey with two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Wolverines would tack on two more insurance runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead. Bennett Isaacson-Krueger, Brey, and Dannhausen all had two hits in the game. The Vikings used four pitchers ahead of Saturday's doubleheader against Oconto, with Brey taking the loss as he gave up three runs (1 ER) and four hits in one inning of work. 

The Blue Devils will enter the game rested with Tuesday's rainout against Gibraltar the only games they had on the schedule. They played against Southern Door last Friday and have matchup against Menominee on tap for Monday.

The NEW Lutheran Blazers' bats caught fire late in game one and carried it through game two as Gibraltar/Washington Island was swept by scores of 13-5 and 16-2 (five innings).

In game one, the Blazers jumped out to a 4-0 lead thanks to four straight players reaching base. The Vikings scratched across one run in the second inning when Addison Richmond reached on an error, allowing Abby Jarosh to scamper around home to score. The Blazers would bat around in the third inning with Sydney Steffel's lead-off triple starting a five-run rally. The Vikings would respond in the top of the fourth inning as they nearly repeated the feat, sending eight to the plate and bringing half of them home. Anna Jarosh and Pam Prescott each singled while Ashlyn DeJardin doubled to help the Vikings get to within four runs. DeJardin's second double of the day in the sixth inning would be the only hit the Vikings would register the rest of the day while the Blazers added runs in the final three innings to give its senior day a memorable start day. Emilie Glocke went the distance for the Vikings, striking out eight but allowing 14 hits.

In game two, it was the Vikings who would strike first thanks to Abby Jarosh reaching on an error that allowed Emilie Glocke to score. The Blazers would score twice in the second and third before blowing the game wide open by batting around in the fourth and fifth innings to end the game early that was already being threatened by darkness and oncoming storms. The biggest blows came off the bat from Lexi Meerstein, who cleared the bases with a home run in the fourth inning and delivered again with a run-scoring double in the fifth inning. The Vikings pushed across their second inning when a collection of Blazers errors turned an Emilie Glocke's attempt at a sacrifice bunt into a run-scoring play that drove in Pam Prescott. The Blazers outhit the Vikings 19-8 across the two  games

The Gibraltar/Washington Island softball team hopes to secure its first multi-win season since 2021 when they play NEW Lutheran on Friday in a doubleheader.

It has been another hard season for the Vikings as they have lost all but three games by 10 runs or more. It's been a challenge head coach Brandon Schmidt has been more than willing to take on in his first season managing the squad. He says changing the culture has been his biggest goal since taking over the program during the offseason. In Schmidt's first season, they have been able to cut down on their errors and quadruple the number of hits the team has accumulated thanks to some minor changes to their approach at the plate. As a result, they snapped an over two-year losing streak on April 30th when they split a doubleheader against Sturgeon Bay. Schmidt pinpointed Pam Prescott, Emilie Glocke, and Courtney Foy for leading the Vikings offensively and the Jarosh sisters for being stalwarts defensively.

The Blazers come into the match-up 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the Packerland Conference. They are marred in an eight-game conference losing streak with a win against Hilbert the lone bright spot since their sweep of Sturgeon Bay on April 13th.

Tim Kowols will have the call from NEW Lutheran on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 3:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 4 p.m. NEW Radio Sports Network will also cover the Vikings' tournament run, which begins at Roncalli on May 16th. If they win, they would face top-seed Algoma on May 21st.

McKailey Reisen reached the podium twice in the rain-shortened Algoma Invitational on Tuesday.

Reisen took third in the 100m hurdles and the high jump before rains canceled the rest of the meet. Mikala Gorham finished in the top eight of the high jump (5th) and the 100m (8th).

The Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings and the Oconto Blue Devils hope Mother Nature allows them to play two on the baseball diamond Tuesday afternoon in Fish Creek.

The Vikings played four evenly matched Packerland Conference games last week, splitting a pair with Sturgeon Bay and losing a game to Kewaunee before darkness prevented them from finishing their series with the Storm. In their series against Sturgeon Bay, Bennett Issacsson-Krueger was an on-base machine, getting on board seven of his eight trips to the plate, scoring three times, and driving in a pair. Aaron Brey delivered some clutch hits in Friday's game that forced a tie in the second game. Vikings head coach Jay Kita is happy with how the team has played, but he wants to see more players come around to score.

The Blue Devils earned a split against Southern Door on Friday. They lost game one 13-1 before rebounding in game two 7-3. They sit in second place in the Packerland Conference with an 8-4 record and an overall mark of 11-6.

Gibraltar senior track athletes Braden Sitte and McKailey Reisen piled up a lot of gold over the course of two days on Thursday and Friday at the Klinkner Invitational in Chilton and the Hilbert Invitation.

At Thursday's Klinkner Invitational, the duo finished outside of the top spots on the track but in the field, Reisen and Sitte both won the high jump and the latter tacked on a win in the long jump. Aria Nordahl (800m) also finished in the top 3.

At Friday's Hilbert Invitational. Sitte repeated his performances to win the high jump and long jump to lead the Viking boys. The 4x200m relay also finished in the top 3. For the girls, Reisen won the 100m hurdles and high jump and was a part of the two relays that took second place.

The Packerland Conference golf season continues its season north on Thursday when Gibraltar welcomes teams to Peninsula Golf Course.

Sevastopol, Kewaunee, NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy, Oconto, Peshtigo, Southern Door, and Sturgeon Bay are also participating.

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers' golf team had four golfers on the doorstep of winning the latest Packerland Conference stop at The Orchards in Egg Harbor on Monday. Along with Gibraltar's Finn Salm, Sturgeon Bay golfers Owen Pichette, Calvin Richard, Tre Wienke, and Porter Rabach all shot a 43 to give the Clippers the meet win with 172 strokes. That was 14 strokes better than Southern Door and 19 better than Gibraltar. Kewaunee's Evan Maccaux continued his strong season with another individual win, tying with Oconto's Carter Koch at the top spot with a score of 39. Southern Door's Finley LaVine took third with a score of 40.
