Gibraltar meets offensive juggernaut from Peshtigo

The Vikings were downed 67-23 Friday night after the Bulldogs built on a strong first-half lead with an even more efficient second-half.

Peshtigo led 29-14 after one and then continued on, outscoring Gibraltar 38-9 after the break. The offensive attack was led by sophomore Jadyn Jashinsky who finished with 16 points. However, it was a team effort with all but one player getting their name in the scoring column for the Bulldogs.

Gibraltar was paced by Megan Schor with 8 points.

The Vikings will open February with a game against the Packerland leaders' Kewaunee Storm this coming Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m.

"We were able to force a few more turnovers and got several good looks, but couldn't get a shot to fall," said head coach Travis Ward after the game.

The tip-off is at 2 p.m.

The girls will follow, tip-off at 4 p.m.

Vikings boys' comeback comes up short against Wolves

The hole was just too deep for the Gibraltar boys basketball team to climb out of in its 50-41 loss to Hilbert on Thursday.

The Wolves went on a 13-3 run midway through the first half that helped them get out to a big lead, but the Vikings closed out the frame scoring eight of the final 11 points to trim the deficit to 25-19 at the break. A slow start to the second half saw them go down by as much as 17 before eventually trimming that deficit to four points with just over four minutes remaining.

"We were able to force a few more turnovers and got several good looks, but couldn't get a shot to fall," said head coach Travis Ward after the game.

Wyatt Bultman led the Vikings with nine points while Kayin Jackson and Aaron Brey each chipped in eight points in the loss. The Wolves had one player score 17 points while Robert Nolasco chipped in 10 points and Brody Hein added eight points.

The Vikings go back to work on Saturday when they welcome Oconto for a matinee.

The Vikings will look to build off a 64-55 win over Green Bay NEW Lutheran. Wyatt Bultman led Gibraltar with 21 points. Kayin Jackson added 13, Marco Jauregui scored eight, and Finn Bremer and Aaron Brey chipped in six apiece.

Gibraltar stuns N.E.W. Lutheran in big road win

N.E.W. Lutheran entered Tuesday's home matchup with Gibraltar winning their last six games, including four at home. Meanwhile, the Vikings were 1-5 in their last six and winless on the road.

The Vikings didn't let any of that carry weight going into Green Bay and pulled off a huge, unexpected win. The last time the two teams played it was close, a 58-52 loss for Gibraltar.

Looking to rebound from that loss, Gibraltar got to the free throw line, converted, and made the most of their possession inside the paint. The Vikings pull off a big upset downing the Blazers 64-55 in their gym.

"It wasn't always pretty, but we played well enough on both ends of the court to win tonight," said head coach Travis Ward after the game. Ward was highly complimentary of Wyatt Bultman, who led the Vikings with 21 points. "Wyatt Bultman was big for us scoring inside and cleaning the glass. The Blazer press gave us some problems down the stretch but we were able to get a few easy baskets and we hit our freethrows to close it out."

Kayin Jackson added 14 points and Marco Jauregui added eight points in the win. Hayden Schultz paced the Blazers with 21 points

Gibraltar hosts Hilbert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Vikings girls struggle in loss to Blue Devils on 105.1 The GOAT

The Oconto girls basketball team took advantage of Gibraltar's lack of depth as they took control early and never let go in a 57-11 win Monday night.

The Vikings struggled to get their offense going against the Blue Devils as they fought through press defenses away from the basketball and size underneath. Megan Schar broke up a 17-0 run by the Blue Devils to start the game with a free throw after nearly 12 minutes of game action. The Blue Devils went on a 12-0 run to end the half as they entered the locker room up 29-1.

The Blue Devils kept the offense going in the second half despite a constantly changing cast of characters. The Vikings were eventually able to make shots from the field, beginning with a pair of layups made by Emilie Glocke.

The Blue Devils were led by Natalie Schlueter's 15 points and 13 bench points from Kara TerMaat. The Vikings mustered four points apiece from Glocke and Schar, two points from Josie Martin, and one point from Megan Gallant. Head coach Justin Burress said after the game that the girls played hard, but they could not compete with their short bench.

The Vikings are back at it on Friday when they welcome Peshtigo to Fish Creek for a 7 p.m. tip.

Vikings girls look to snap skid in Oconto on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar girls basketball team looks to snap a three-game skid Monday night when it travels to Oconto to take on the Blue Devils.

The Vikings have not won since a dominant 69-11 victory over Stockbridge on Jan. 13. In the games since, they had the favor returned by Kewaunee and managed just 22 points in losses to NEW Lutheran (46-22) on Thursday and Gillett (54-22) on Saturday. Gibraltar battled injuries and illness in Thursday’s loss, leaving the Vikings with just four players for the final quarter.

The Blue Devils won the first matchup between the teams in Fish Creek, 45-32. Schlueter scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Josie Martin paced the Vikings with 10 points and Megan Gallant pulled down eight rebounds.

Other girls basketball games scheduled for Monday include Sevastopol hosting Sturgeon Bay (7 p.m.) and Algoma visiting Peshtigo (7 p.m.).

Vikings battle more than just Blazers in Thursday loss

The Gibraltar Vikings girls basketball team had to play the final 8:39 of its game against NEW Lutheran a player down in its 46-22 loss in Fish Creek Thursday.

Playing down a person already on their roster, the Vikings had one player go down with an injury and another leave early due to sickness en route to the lopsided loss. The two teams traded buckets early, but a 14-5 run midway through the first half spelled doom for the Vikings as they entered the locker room with a 22-12 deficit. Things did not get better for the Vikings in the second half as they ended the game with just four players on the court.

Megan Gallant led the Vikings with six points while Gabriella Solomon added five points, and Emilie Glocke, Megan Schar, and Celeste Jauregui each chipped in three points. The Blazers had two players score 13 points in the win.

The Vikings will try to get healthy before hosting Gillett on Saturday before playing at Oconto on Monday. Tim Kowols will have the call of Monday's game from Oconto on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the tip at 7 p.m.

The Blazers are coming off a 50-23 loss to Sturgeon Bay. The Vikings look to rebound from an 86-17 loss to Kewaunee.

In their last meeting, the Vikings used a 13-2 run to open the second half to cruise to a comfortable 50-32 win. Three Vikings players reached double-figures, with Azucena Jauregui leading the squad with 14 points, followed by 12 points from Emilie Glocke and 10 points from Josie Martin.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.

Vikings boys welcome Wolves on 105.1 The GOAT

Gibraltar and Algoma renew pleasantries in Fish Creek on Friday night as the Packerland Conference boys' basketball season rolls on.

The Vikings are coming off a 54-45 loss to Sturgeon Bay last Saturday following a thrilling win over Southern Door. Marco Jauregui followed up his game-clinching performance with 15 points to lead the Vikings. Kayin Jackson added 11 points and Wyatt Bultman contributed 10 points in the loss. Vikings head coach Travis Ward likes how competitive his team has been in their games as of late, even if if they have not always translated into wins.

The Wolves have dropped two straight non-conference games against Reedsville and Valders. In the Valders game, the Vikings kept one of the Wolves' leading scorer Parker Lischka in check as he tallied just seven points. Griffen Robinson led the Wolves with 15 points while Charlie Prokash added 11 points and Aidan Zeitler chipped in eight more. The matchup against the Vikings was one of their first games they played without Braeden Leist, who will be out a few games with an injury. Head coach Eric Schneider hopes they can work some things out ahead of Friday as they adjust to life without Leist for now.

Gibraltar steamrolls Stockbridge

Southern Door took a page out of the Bears' playbook Tuesday night wiping away an 18-point deficit in the second half to win on a last second lay-in from Ryker Lohrey that gave the Eagles a 56-55 lead with 3 seconds remaining.

The first half was all Mishicot on the offensive end, building a 34-18 lead going into the break.

Southern Door flipped the switch at halftime relying on a few runs to close the gap and come within striking distance of a win.

The Eagles grabbed their first lead in the final minute of the second half, 52-51. Mishicot then put themselves back ahead and the two teams exchanged buckets before Southern Door finally got the last laugh.

It's a huge win for the Eagles, just their second, but it puts them on the right path going into a road matchup with N.E.W. Lutheran Friday at 7 p.m.

Vikings girls' basketball hosting Indians

The Gibraltar girls’ basketball team hosts the Stockbridge Indians on Tuesday. Stockbridge is coming off a 68-8 loss to Washington County Homeschool Athletics. The Vikings are also coming off a loss, falling to Algoma 63-20. Azucena Jauregui led Gibraltar with 10 points.
Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Jauregui's three caps Vikings' rally over Eagles on 105.1 The GOAT

Marco Jauregui's three-point with just under eight seconds remaining gave Gibraltar the 59-57 win over Southern Door for their second win of the campaign Tuesday night in Fish Creek.

The Eagles' Lauden Berg and the Vikings' Kayin Jackson showed why they are among the best in the conference in driving the ball to the hoop as the two traded buckets early on. Three pointers from Landon Vandertie and Talon Mueller helped stretch the lead out to double digits before the Vikings brought it back to a 22-18 ball game in the closing minutes. A pair of threes from Dawson Schwartz and a few more Berg buckets stretched the lead back to 14 points as the Eagles went a 10-0 run. The rally was broken when Jackson hit a running shot from distance to close the half with the Vikings trailing the Eagles 32-21 at the break.

The two teams played even for the first 10 minutes of the second half before the Vikings were able to finally whittle away at the Eagles' lead and get it to single digits. Vandertie and Schwartz made big baskets down the stretch to keep the Vikings at a distance, only to have Finn Bremer, Jauregui, and Jackson get it to within a single possession late. Trailing by one with less than 30 seconds remaining, the Vikings were able drain the clock down to set up Jauregui's herorics.

A last-second shot from Berg came up empty, giving the Vikings their second win of the season and prevented the Eagles from building on their win over Marinette on Monday.

Jackson scored a game-high 28 points for the Vikings with Jauregui adding 19 points and Aaron Brey, Wyatt Bultman, and Bremer all chipping in with four points. Berg ended his evening with 17 points to pace the Eagles while Vandertie added 12 points and Eli Jadin joined Schwartz with eight-point efforts.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday when the Vikings travel to Sturgeon Bay to take on the Clippers at 2 p.m. while the Eagles look to rebound against Kewaunee at 7 p.m.

In their 55-25 loss to Algoma on December 19th, the Clippers battled hard against their southern neighbors behind six points from Reen Walker, five points from Makenna Coyhis, and four points apiece from Cora Frangipane and Regan Kasten.
