The hole was just too deep for the Gibraltar boys basketball team to climb out of in its 50-41 loss to Hilbert on Thursday.
The Wolves went on a 13-3 run midway through the first half that helped them get out to a big lead, but the Vikings closed out the frame scoring eight of the final 11 points to trim the deficit to 25-19 at the break. A slow start to the second half saw them go down by as much as 17 before eventually trimming that deficit to four points with just over four minutes remaining.
"We were able to force a few more turnovers and got several good looks, but couldn't get a shot to fall," said head coach Travis Ward after the game.
Wyatt Bultman led the Vikings with nine points while Kayin Jackson and Aaron Brey each chipped in eight points in the loss. The Wolves had one player score 17 points while Robert Nolasco chipped in 10 points and Brody Hein added eight points.
The Vikings go back to work on Saturday when they welcome Oconto for a matinee.
