DeBauch's return spoils Vikings' aspirations on 105.1 the GOAT

The return of the likely All-Across the Bay Conference quarterback of the year, Jesse DeBauch, proved too much for Gibraltar, as they lost to Gillett Friday night 28-12.

Debuting a new run-heavy offense, the Vikings came up empty on their first drive but struck from distance on their second drive. He reversed fields to score from 70 yards out to put the Vikings up 6-0 in the first quarter.

DeBauch, playing in his first game since Week 1 against Three Lakes, proved why he remained the conference's leading passer despite being out for three weeks with long touchdown passes on consecutive drives to Lavonzell Smith and Ryan Pensis to put the Tigers up 14-6.  The Vikings would pull the game to within a pair midway through the second quarter when Lecy found the endzone again from 19 yards out to make it 14-12. DeBauch took advantage of the time left on the clock with his third touchdown pass of the day with a rainbow throw to Andrew Urch to squeeze in a 22-12 advantage at the break.

Both defenses would bend but break sparingly in the second half, with DeBauch's fourth touchdown of the day coming on the ground in the third quarter serving as the only score after halftime. DeBauch bought plenty of time with his feet, but the combination of Jeffrey Mize and Wyatt Bultman caused enough havoc to derail many of the Tigers' drives. The combination of Anders Johnson as quarterback and Giovanni Mercier and Lecy made it possible to move the ball, only to be denied by the Tigers' defense. A Clayton Borremans interception closed the game, sending the Vikings to their fifth straight loss of the season.

The Vikings are back in action next Friday night when they welcome Suring to Fish Creek for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Vikings' Prescott, Wolves' Jones share milestone night

Algoma's Mylee Jones and Gibraltar's Pam Prescott now have more in common than just being Packerland Conference volleyball players after each hit the 1,000 dig milestone Thursday night.

According to Vikings assistant volleyball coach Samantha Winker, Prescott needed just one dig to reach her 1000th dig going into the game, and Jones was close behind, needing just four. Both girls reached the milestone early in the first set. Prescott, who has played Libero for the Vikings for the past three years, is Gibraltar’s first player to surpass 1000 in the digs category.

No score was shared from the match.

Vikings look to snap losing streak in Gillett on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings hope a trip around the bay to Gillett cures their season's ails when they battle the Tigers on Friday night.

The Vikings are 0-4 on the season, including last week's 43-8 loss to county rival Sevastopol. An 80-plus-yard touchdown catch by Will Lecy from Giovanni Mercier was the Vikings' lone offensive highlight of the game. Lecy has been pacing the team's offense all season long as the Vikings' leading receiver and rusher.

The Tigers have struggled offensively since losing Jesse DeBauch to injury. The team has not scored since their 34-32 loss to Three Lakes/Phelps in the season opener, in which DeBauch accounted for 354 yards. They have been outscored 110-0 since, including last week's 36-0 defeat to Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff from Gillett at 7 p.m.

Perlman's tally holds up in United win over Paladins

Gibraltar/Sevastopol United boys varsity soccer topped Providence Academy 1-0 in
Green Bay for a Packerland Conference victory on Thursday.

United is 6-2 for the regular season.

Despite dominating possession for most of the match, United could only find the back of the net once, when senior Trey Perlman scored from distance in the closing minutes of the first half (38’).

The upcoming week for United brings further Packerland Conference action: a home match against the Sturgeon Bay Clippers on Monday, September 30th, at 6:30 p.m. in Fish Creek and an away game at the Algoma Wolves on Thursday, October 3rd, at 4 p.m.

United earns one win in Wrightstown tournament

Gibraltar/Sevastopol United boys varsity soccer traveled to Wrightstown on Saturday, September 21 for tournament play in a field that included Altoona, Howards Grove, Kewaunee, Marinette, New Holstein, and Random Lake/Ozaukee. United talied one win and two losses on the day, giving the team a 3-3 record in tournament matches for the year.

United opened with a 3-1 win against Random Lake/Ozaukee, with goals from juniors Brandon Mayorga (11'), Damien Lardinois (15') and Mauricio Fernandez.  That ended the regulation scoring for United, with a 0-2 loss to Marinette and a 0-0 shootout defeat to Howards Grove.

The next regular season game for United is Packerland Conference action on Thursday, September 26, 4:30pm at Providence Academy.

Schuh, Pioneers spoils Vikings' homecoming on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sevastopol Pioneers broke a four-game losing streak to their county rivals in convincing fashion Friday night, beating Gibraltar 43-8.

The two teams exchanged punts to start the game, but the Vikings' attempt from the back of their own endzone failed to make it to their own 10-yard line, setting up the short rushing score for Bo Tanck.

The Vikings forced a fumble on a punt return, giving them their first short field of the night, but they were again turned away by the Pioneers' staunch defense. The Pioneers would score on three consecutive drives with two rushing touchdowns by Logan Schuh sandwiching his touchdown pass to Tanck to give the Pioneers a 28-0 halftime lead.

The Vikings would try to take control in the second half when the newly minted homecoming king Will Lecy hauled in a pass from Giovanni Mercier from over 80 yards away and took it the distance to make it 28-6. After the Vikings forced a turnover on downs on the next drives, the Pioneers put a stranglehold on the game's momentum with a safety and a 65-yard Sladon Asher punt return for a touchdown on consecutive plays. With Michael Wautlet and Tanck intercepting passes on two of the next three drives, the Pioneers put a bow on the victory midway through the fourth quarter on a 23-yard touchdown run by Schuh.

The Pioneers improve to 3-1 on the season and will host Algoma next week, while the Vikings hit the road to Gillett to face the Tigers. The Vikings/Tigers game will air on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com.

United calms Storm

Gibraltar/Sevastopol United boys varsity soccer needed only 60 minutes to shut out Packerland Conference opponents, the Kewaunee Storm, 8-0 Thursday evening on home turf in Fish Creek, as Gibraltar High School celebrates Homecoming week. The victory puts United at 5-2 for the season (plus 2-1 in tournament play).

Senior striker Trey Perlman got the scoring started for United (14’) with an assist from junior Brandon Mayorga. Mayorga was next to find the back of the net (20’) with an assist from senior Cristino Valdivia. Junior Damien Lardinois closed the first half with his goal in the 39th minute.

Perlman got two quick goals to open the second half (41’ and 44’) and tally the hat trick. Junior Mauricio Fernandez assisted with both goals. Brandon Mayorga netted his second of the night (49’) shortly after.

United scored two more goals in quick succession to secure the victory and end the contest, by junior Aaron Tomaszewski (59’) and senior Canyon Burgard (60’). Tomaszewski and junior Juan Gallardo-Ibarra split the game in net to get the clean sheet.

United travels to Wrightstown on Saturday, September 21, for tournament play in a field that includes Altoona, Howards Grove, Kewaunee, Marinette, New Holstein, and Random Lake/Ozaukee. The next regular-season match for United is Thursday, September 26, at Providence Academy.

Gibraltar, Sevastopol renew rivalry for homecoming on 105.1 The GOAT

Homecoming only adds to the intrigue of Friday night's Door County eight-man football rivalry matchup between Gibraltar and Sevastopol.

It is a role reversal from last year when the Pioneers went 0-8 and the Vikings clinched a playoff berth with a 6-3 record. In last year's game, Braden Sitte and Will Lecy each scored three touchdowns in the Vikings' 55-22.

Until last week's game at Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran, Lecy's third-quarter touchdown had been the last time the Vikings reached the endzone, spanning a loss to Florence in the playoffs and two shutouts against Almond-Bancroft and Algoma. Lecy's touchdown grab on a slant pass from Giovanni Mercier broke the scoreless streak, but not in the standings as the Vikings dropped to 0-3 with a 39-6 loss to the United.

The Pioneers started the season with a 2-0 record, picking up an impressive 60-6 win over Wild Rose and shutting out Suring 6-0 on the road. Last week, the Pioneers could not muster any offense against one of the state's best teams in a 40-0 loss to Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas in Institute.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening kickoff at 7 p.m.

Vikings still find positives in loss to United on 105.1 The GOAT

Head coach Mike Peck was able to find some silver linings in Friday's game despite it ending in another lopsided loss, this time a 39-6 defeat to Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran.

The Vikings had no turnovers in the first half, but they were unable to stop the United's offensive attack led by quarterback Reid Nelson. After Josh Kribs opened the scoring on a 10-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, Nelson threw for three scores in the second quarter. He connected with Brett Gajeski on a long touchdown pass to kick things off in the second quarter before connecting with Kribs on a screen pass and Gajeski a second time to make it 25-0 at the break.

The Vikings would finally break a long scoring drought in the third quarter following a fumble recovery by Jeffrey Mize. Giovanni Mercier connected with Will Lecy from nine yards to make it 25-6.

The Vikings did not fare well the rest of the game, ending their night with an interception by Evan Monfre and a fumble recovery on a kickoff taken upfield by Bairen Lhost. The United, meanwhile, cashed in on their remaining possessions behind rushing touchdowns by Kribs and Nelson.

Peck said after the game that scoring in the third quarter got a huge monkey off their back and their kickoff return game showed signs of life ahead of the fumble in the fourth quarter. It sets in motion some positive momentum for the Vikings, which hosts Sevastopol for their homecoming game on September 20th. Tim Kowols and 105.1 The GOAT will have the call from Fish Creek for the game beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Gibraltar/Sevastopol bounces back against Peshtigo

Gibraltar/Sevastopol United varsity boys soccer cruised to victory over Packerland Conference foes the Peshtigo Bulldogs Thursday evening, defeating the hosts 6-1. The victory for United comes after a non-conference loss Tuesday to Ashwaubenon, 0-1.

In Peshtigo, Junior Mauricio Fernandez opened the gates for United early  (7’) with an assist from Senior Cristino Valdivia. Junior Brandon Mayorga was next (17’), followed by Junior Zaul Valdivia (30’) with an assisting pass from Mayorga. Junior Damien Lardinois was the scoring leader for United, netting a big header (31’) on a cross by Zaul Valdivia, with two more goals in succession to close the first half (32’ and 39’) and register the hat trick.

The highlight for the Bulldogs was a late breakaway goal in the second half scored by freshman Chayce Wesoloski (67').

United has a week-long break from competition. They return to home turf in Fish Creek next Thursday, September 19, at 6:30 p.m. for a Homecoming Week conference tilt against Kewaunee. United then heads to Wrightstown for tournament play on Saturday, September 21.

Vikings search Oneida Nation for first win on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings football team will head to Oneida Nation to face Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy on Friday night in search of its first win.

Anchored by running back Will Lecy and quarterback Jake Larson, the offense looked better in its second outing but still could not break a season-long scoreless streak as they lost to Algoma 48-0. Isaac Yunk wore down the Vikings' defense as he rushed for three scores and threw for another in the rout. The Vikings' have been searching for the endzone since the third quarter of last year's 52-22 win over Sevastopol. Since then, the Vikings have mustered just three points in the last 13 quarters.

The United followed up its three-overtime win over Algoma with a 24-0 loss to playoff participant Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas. Bryce Liebzeit and Reid Nelson were kept in check on the ground as they rushed for just 59 yards on 24 carries. Nelson threw for another 24 yards on 2-8 passing.

Tim Kowols will have the call from Oneida Nation High School on 105.1 The GOAT, 1051TheGOAT.com, and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening kick at 7 p.m.

United shuts out Wolves

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol United varsity boys returned to winning ways Monday night, defeating the visiting Algoma Wolves in Fish Creek by a final score of 4-0. United dominated play throughout the match, keeping the ball on the Algoma side of the field and allowing the Wolves very few scoring opportunities.

Goal scoring for United started with a  beautiful header by junior Mauricio Fernandez off a cross from junior Christian Ruiz (10'). Junior Brandon Mayorga scored from the top of the box in the twenty-fifth minute. Senior Trey Perlman ended the first half with a goal in minute 39. Senior Thomas Seabright got the final United goal at minute 68. Junior goalie Aaron Tomaszewski recorded the clean sheet with only a handful of saves.

The Packerland Conference win over Algoma comes after a two-win, one loss-outing for the United at the Winneconne tournament over the past weekend.

The busy week for United continues Tuesday night with an away match at Ashwaubenon at 7pm, followed by another travel day to battle conference foes Peshtigo on Thursday, September 12 at 4:30pm. The United JV squad will face Sturgeon Bay away on Thursday as well.

Yunk's big day spoils Gibraltar's home opener on 105.1 The GOAT

Isaac Yunk and the Algoma Wolves were too much for the Gibraltar Vikings in a 48-0 romp Friday night in Fish Creek.

The Wolves scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and six of their eight on the night. The first two touchdowns were set up by long passing plays from Lane Cochart to Parker Lischka, allowing Yunk to score from inside the five yard line both times. Lischka would finally be rewarded on the Wolves' third drive with a 65-yard touchdown catch and run. Yunk would cap off the first half scoring with a four-yard pass to Carson Leist to make it 40-0 at the break. With a running clock in the second half, Yunk's 30-yard rushing score on Algoma's first drive marked the game's final score.

The Vikings' second drive of each half showed promise but sputtered out in the end. In the first quarter, Will Lecy posted several long runs that put the Vikings inside the red zone only to turn the ball over on downs. In the third quarter, a pass from Anders Johnson to Beckett Johnson put the ball inside the five. The Wolves withstood the pressure and forced the fumble to stop the threat. The game ended on an interception by the Wolves' Jack Schwader to preserve the shutout.

The Vikings will try to break their eight-quarter scoreless streak to the start the season next Friday at Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com. The Wolves will try to go above .500 next Saturday at Three Lakes.

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer team hopes a trip to Winneconne will help right the ship after a tough loss Thursday night.

The United were humbled after 2-0 start to their season with a 7-1 loss to Packerland power Sturgeon Bay on Thursday night. Both teams were on top of the conference table after winning their Packerland openers.

The quad features the host school. Omro, and West Bend West and begins at 9:30 a.m. in Winneconne.

The Blazers won the match  25-15, 25-17, 25-16. Laatsch posted 15 digs and 15 kills in the Blazers' win, also receiving eight kills and two blocks from Lexie Meerstein.

Gibraltar battles Algoma, cancer on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings will battle a conference rival on the field and an even bigger foe off of it Friday night when they welcome the Algoma Wolves.

The Vikings struggled offensively against Almond-Bancroft's defense in their 52-0 loss last Thursday. They were held to less than 70 yards of offense with Will Lecy carrying the load with 26 yards on the ground and five through the air. Four players posted at least five tackles in the defeat, led by Giovanni Mercier's seven.

The Wolves suffered a heartbreaking 36-28 defeat to Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran last Friday night. Lane Cochart threw for 123 yards and two scores on the night, but it was his interception in the third overtime that ended the night for the Wolves. Parker Lischka led the way running the ball with a  71 yards.

The game will serve as a benefit for the family of Braden Sitte, who graduated from Gibraltar in 2024 and was diagnosed with Burkitt's lymphoma weeks before he was to join his new football teammates at UW-LaCrosse. Proceeds from the concessions, silent auction, raffle baskets, bake sale, and other activities will support his ongoing treatments and associated costs. The activities begin at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.

Tim Kowols will have the call from Fish Creek on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m. You can also catch the game on 1051TheGOAT.com and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com.
