The Gibraltar volleyball team played as many as four divisions up on Saturday as they went 1-3 in the Ashwaubenon Jaguar Classic.

The Vikings started the day with a win over Division 2 Antigo (13-25, 25-16, 15-13) before losing to D1 Ashwaubenon (17-25, 20-25), D3 Wrightstown (20-25, 10-25), and D1 Menasha (20-25, 18-25). 

The Vikings were led by Azucena Jauregui ( 22 kills, 3 aces, 25 digs, 5 blocks), Isla Fagundes (50 assists, 3 aces, 20 digs), Ella Clarke (15 kills, 3 solo blocks), and Ema Collak (8 kills, 4 aces, 17 digs).

Vikings head coach Lauren Ward called the tournament a "learning experience" because of the step up in size in competition. "We were glad to rally and defeat Antigo in a fun win," Ward said. "The rest of the matches we felt good about rising up to the level of play and operating at a high speed of defense and offense."

The Vikings will now set their sights on Algoma and Sturgeon Bay.

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer team returns home on Monday to welcome Packerland Conference foe Kewaunee.

The United posted consecutive 1-1 draws on back-to-back nights last week in matches against Clintonville (Thursday) and St. Mary Catholic (Friday). Both of their goals came in the second half of the respective matches.

The Storm scored their first goal of the season last Thursday, but it was still a part of a blowout loss as they fell 9-1 to Peshtigo.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

Gibraltar's Graham De Voe finished in 15th place in Friday's Nightfall Classic 920 to lead the team.

De Voe covered the Winagamie Golf Course 5K path in a time of 18:16 to lead the Vikings in the D3 race. Auden Palm and Luke McCormack finished in less than 20 minutes to crack the Top 60. On the girls' side, Olivia Pelkey and Keegan Rasmusson posted personal bests in a pair of sub-27 minute performances.

The Gibraltar volleyball team returns to work on Saturday when they travel to Ashwaubenon to play in the Jaguar Classic.

In their last match, the Vikings welcomed the community to its new gym and treated them to a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-11, 25-19) win over Kewaunee. Leading the way for the Vikings were Ella Clarke (15 kills, 2 blocks), Aileen Torres (9 kills, 1 ace, 12 digs), Azucena Jauregui (5 kills, 4 aces, 14 digs), and Isla Fagundes (37 assists, 12 digs, 4 kills, 3 aces).

Seven other teams including host Ashwaubenon will compete in the tournament beginning at 9 a.m.

For the second week in a row, the Gibraltar Vikings struggled get off the field on defense in a 45-8 loss to the Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Titans 45-8 on Friday night.

The Vikings were in trouble from the opening possession when the Titans' Luke Koslowsky recovered a fumble and scored from a few yards out to make it 6-0. The Farley brothers took over the scoring from there as Lucas Farley threw for two touchdowns while Jake Farley caught one and took a punt return in for another to make it 24-0 at the break.

The Titans extended their lead to 32-0 on the opening possession of the second half when Lucas Farley found PJ Farley for a second touchdown through the air. The Vikings finally found the end zone on their first possession of the third quarter with Hobbs Emerson connecting with Wyatt Bultman on two long passes, including a 13-yard pass in the corner of the end zone to make it 32-8.

The Titans thwarted any attempt at a comeback with Lucas Farley galloping 41 yards on the following drive and Carson Joyce found the end zone for the team's final score.

With more injuries piling up in Lena, the Vikings will try to get healthy before they return home to face Valley Christian, which beat Algoma on Friday 31-14. Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. followed by kickoff at 7 p.m on Friday.

Ethan Melotte contributed to all six touchdowns in a 42-6 romp over Gibraltar on Thursday night for Algoma last week. Hobbs Emerson was able to lead one scoring drive late, sneaking in from one yard out to make the final score 42-6. Jake Larson led the team with 49 yards rushing.

The Titans are 2-1 entering the matchup, responding to 12-6 loss to Wabeno/Laona with two blowout wins over Wausaukee and Goodman/Pembine. Isaac Peterson leads the Titans with 242 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer team returns to their home pitch on Thursday with a non-conference matchup against Clintonville. 

The United snapped a three-match losing streak last Thursday with a 4-2 victory over Peshtigo. Ian Cespedes and Sammy Valdivia were among the goal scorers for the United in the victory.

The Truckers are 0-3-1 on the campaign, including a 2-1 loss to Luxemburg-Casco last Thursday. The Truckers had leveled the score when Mario Ramirez found the back of the net in the 63rd minute before giving up the game-winner in the closing minutes.

Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

The Gibraltar cross country team headed out for its second meet of the season on Thursday, hitting the road to Kiel.

In the boys' race, Graham De Voe was the top finisher with a sub-20-minute time and a top-25 finish. Auden Palm, Will Bertges, and Erik Wolfe set personal records while Mylo Sherman posted a season best at the meet. For the girls, Keegan Rasmusson ran a personal best time of 30:21 to come in 81st.

Head coach Lauren Ward was complimentary of her team after its first Packerland win of the season while keeping an eye on its next conference match against Algoma. "It was great to watch our team put together a solid defense and a quicker offense against the Storm," Ward said afterwards. "The night was not without some errors, but we were able to maintain an even flow of energy and ride the momentum of the match. Ella Clarke came out swinging hard tonight, and between Fagundes' consistent setting and Azucena's defense, we were able to outlast the night."

Two local rivals collide on Thursday night when Gibraltar travels the lakeshore to face Algoma.

The Vikings scored a touchdown in all three phases of the game on Friday night as they cruised to a 48-22 win over Oneida Nation in Fish Creek last week. After an even first quarter, the Vikings dominated the second quarter thanks to the strong line play of Finn Bremer, Kaleb Hummel, and Xavier Gaddes. Larson scored two touchdowns on the ground, and Emerson bulldozed his way to another to hit halftime up 26-8. Emerson added an interception to help ward off a Thunderhawks drive midway through the second quarter. The Vikings reached the end zone three more times in the second half, but only one of them was guided by Emerson. Milo Andrews started the scoring when he came up with a fumble recovery that he took 99 yards for a touchdown, while Landen Pelkey took a Thunderhawks punt to the house to expand the Vikings' lead to 40-8. The Thunderhawks traded scores to end the game with Cornelius rushing for one score and finding Malone again for the other, while Brady White took a handoff from Larson to the end zone to end the game on a high note. Head coach Mike Peck is happy to see the growth his team is making and the success they had against the Thunderhawks, but know they have their work cut out for them against the Wolves.

The Wolves won a second straight rout on the road on Thursday, soundly beating Wausaukee 54-8 on Thursday. The Wolves scored three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, three of which came from at least 20 yards out. The two teams traded touchdowns in the final quarter with the game well in hand for the Wolves. Ethan Melotte threw for six yards but ran for 130 yards and a score on just nine carries. Jacob Blahnik scored two touchdowns on three carries for 66 yards, while Jack Meverden rushed for 39 yards and two touchdowns. Nolan Cochart scored once on 46 yards rushing. Head coach Wade Vandervest gives credit to the players for stepping into more significant roles this season and to his staff for coaching them up and ensuring that they were ready when their number was called.

The Gibraltar Vikings volleyball team opens Packerland play on Thursday with a home match against Kewaunee.

After tournaments at Central Wisconsin Christian and Crivitz, the Vikings have split their first 10 matches.

At Central Wisconsin Christian, the Vikings went 1-2 on day one with a pool play win against Parkview 25-19, 25-19 before losing to Wisconsin Heights 26-27, 24-26 and CWC 21-25, 26-24, 11-15. They bounced back in bracket play on day two, falling to Wisconsin Heights 19-25, 25-22, 7-15 before beating SWCHA 25-17, 23-25, 15-13 and Elkhart Lake Glenbeulah 16-25, 27-26, 17-15. The Vikings were led by Ella Clarke (40 kills, 5 aces, 6 block assists), Ema Collak (27 kills, 8 aces, 53 digs), Isla Fagundes (99 assists, 8 aces, 62 digs), Aileen Torres (24 kills, 40 digs), and Azucena Jauregui (21 kills, 5 aces, 50 digs). Despite the .500 mark, head coach Lauren Ward was happy with the intensity and skill the team showed. "The girls continue to demonstrate that their level of play has accelerated both with their defense and the speed of their offense," Ward said. "Taking teams like CWC (last season's sectional semifinalist) to three sets and losses that are only a few points off, shows that hunger and intensity has improved this preseason."

At Crivitz, the Vikings bounced back from losses to 

Florence 13-25, 15-25 and Green Bay Southwest 25-22, 22-25, 9-15 before beating Marinette 25-13, 25-18 and Mercer 25-21, 25-16. Leading the Vikings once again were Ema Collak (11 aces, 14 kills, 31 digs), Isla Fagundes (29 assists, 4 aces, 14 digs), Ella Clarke (14 kills, 4 blocks), and Azucena Jauregui (11 kills, 17 digs). Ward was proud of how her team shook off the summer jitters after a rough morning. "It's wonderful to have Ema Collak back after last season's injury, and the team played united and aggressive," Ward said. "Despite the two losses in the morning, I was really proud of their fortitude and ability to adjust to the speed of play."

The Vikings face a 2-4 Storm squad that is coming off a five-match day where they went 2-3 on the day with wins over Kohler and Valders.
