Vikings volleyball takes second in Hilbert tourney

The Gibraltar Vikings volleyball team was able to bring home some hardware over the weekend as they took second place in the Hilbert Tournament on Saturday.

After Algoma avenged their conference match from earlier in the week in three sets 14-25, 26-24, 13-15, the Vikings rallied to win four of the next five. The Vikings beat Wittenberg-Birnamwood 26-24, 25-20 and Roncalli 24-26, 26-24, 15-12 before losing to Central Wisconsin Christian 17-25, 19-25. They closed out the day with victories over Hilbert 25-11, 25-18 and Mishicot 25-11, 25-18.

The Vikings were led by Ema Collak (35 kills, 8 aces, 33 digs, 4 blocks)), Ella Clarke (29 kills, 6 aces, 10 blocks), Isla Fagundes (87 assists, 36 digs, 6 aces), Aileen Torres (17 kills, 33 digs, 4 blocks), and Azucena Jauregui (14 kills, 39 digs, 8 blocks).

Head coach Lauren Ward said it was a good day for the Vikings at the Hilbert, especially once they found a rhythm after a slow start to the tournament. "I’m particularly proud of serve receive and defensive passing," Ward said. "Collak came alive at the net, making some very smart offensive plays. Fagundes continues to push our offense to speed up and have fun swinging. We’re pleased with our level of play."

The Vikings go back to work on Thursday when they face Sturgeon Bay.
