Gibraltar girls host make-up game against Sevastopol

Gibraltar and Sevastopol will renew their cross-county rivalry in a make-up girls' basketball match-up from earlier this month in Fish Creek at 7:30 p.m.

The Vikings continue to look for their first win of the season after falling to NEW Lutheran 54-31. Andie Schar led the Vikings with 12 points and Betsy Lecy added six points in the loss. Despite the result, it was a great bounceback performance for the young team after its loss to Kewaunee earlier in the week.

The Pioneers are locked in their hardest part of the season as they have lost three of their last five games including four straight games of scoring less than 40 points despite averaging 48 points a game this season. Thanks to 19 points from Bailey Rikkola and 15 points from Libby Ash, they broke out of their offensive funk Friday night when they beat Southern Door 58-32 in Brussels.

Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Vikings fall to Storm on the road on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar boys’ basketball team hosted Kewaunee in a Saturday conference matchup.

The Vikings got out to a hot start taking a 5 point lead halfway through the first half. From there the Storm would turn the tides as they would use a full-court press to generate turnovers from the Vikings and convert defense into offense to take a double-digit lead into the halftime break. In the second half, Kewaunee was still firing on all cylinders offensively, shooting well from beyond the arc, and was using their physicality to make Gibraltar commit unforced turnovers and that would ultimately help them win the game by a final score of 62-41.

Gibraltar has some time off before they take on Algoma on Thursday.

Vikings girls struggle in loss to Blazers on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar girls' basketball team fell in an early 11-0 hole and could not claw its way back as it fell to NEW Lutheran Friday night 54-31.

The Vikings never got closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Blazers forced a number of turnovers in the Gibraltar defensive zone that paved the way for easy buckets underneath for the visitors. Vikings fans got a nice glimpse of the future when the girls got the lead under 15 points towards the end of the game thanks to a pair of three-point shots by Andie Schar and Betsy Lecy that highlighted in 8-0 run with just over four minutes remaining. The Blazers shut the door from their with timely free throw shooting from Leah Schmidt and more tough defense close to Gibraltar's basket.

Schmidt led the way for the Blazers with 24 points while Natalie Lange scored nine points and Ingrid Beaumont tallied eight. Schar led the Vikings with 12 points and Lecy added six points in the loss.

Gibraltar girls look for first win against NEW Lutheran on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar girls basketball team hope a little home cooking will spark them to their first victory of the season when NEW Lutheran comes to town Friday night.

The Vikings have struggled mightily this season thus far, averaging less than 30 points per game. Skewing that average was their matchup earlier this week against Kewaunee where the Storm won in convincing fashion 78-15. The Blazers are near the bottom of the Packerland as well with a 3-7 record. They lost to Algoma on Monday 48-37 despite 12 points from Leah Schmidt.

The Blazers were buoyed by a 16 point lead at halftime in their win over Gibraltar earlier this season by a final score of 54-39. The Vikings had three players reach double figures in the loss, led by Andie Schar's 12 points.

Tim Kowols and Reece Robillard will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 7 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

The Gibraltar girls' basketball team looks to make the most of their long road trip west to face Wabeno-Laona.

The Vikings are still looking for their first victory of the season after losing their last match up to Algoma 48-27. Key to the slow start has been the offense, which is only averaging just over 31 points per game and no players scoring in the double figures. Wabeno/Laona is 8-3 on the season and won its last game 49-41 over Three Lakes. Ellie and Grace Krawze lead the team with approximately 10 points a piece per game.

Gibraltar boys' Friday matchup versus Algoma postponed

The Gibraltar boys' basketball team will wait until next Thursday's game against Two Rivers before they hit the hardwood for a game again.

UPDATE: The game will now be played on February 3rd per Shawn Duncan from Algoma School District.

Vikings fall to Clippers in Packerland thriller on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar boys’ basketball team traveled to Sturgeon Bay to take on the Clippers in Packerland conference play on Tuesday night.

The night got off to an emotional start with the recognition of Clippers coach Jim Benesh for being selected to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

The Clippers came out of the gates hot and were able to turn defensive pressure into offense to make the game tied heading into the halftime break. The second half started off with a bang for the Clippers with Isaak Aune hitting a mid range jumper and two 3 point attempts to post 8 points in a matter of minutes in the second half. From there the Clippers would match any momentum that the Vikings had by beating the Vikings press, answering Gibraltar baskets with baskets of their own, and making their free throws in the closing seconds to take home a 60-57 win over the Vikings.

Gibraltar had three players in double figures led by Jake Schar with 16, followed by Sam Lindenberg with 15 and Trevor Ash with 10 off the bench.

Sturgeon Bay was led by Isaak Aune who had 19 and Preston Newton who added 13.

The Vikings will next be in action on Friday as they host Algoma in another Packerland Conference matchup.

Gibraltar boys look for bounceback against Sturgeon Bay on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings boys' basketball team will look to snag their second Packerland win Tuesday night when they play Sturgeon Bay Tuesday night.

The Vikings saw another conference win slip away on Friday, losing to Southern Door 60-53. Key to the Eagles' success was shutting down Sam Lindenberg, who had to resort to other ways to contribute after scoring only four points. Gibraltar head coach Justin Burress said on the post-game show they just have to limit their mistakes.

The Clippers enter the game with a 2-5 record in the Packerland Conference after beating Algoma 64-46 in its last matchup on Friday. Isaak Aune was able to exceed his season average with 18 points in the game while Gannon Evers chipping in 16 points. Preston Newton has been steady all season long for the Clippers as he is in the top two for points, rebounds, and assists.

Tanner DeGrave and Jacob Nate will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 7:00 p.m. with the pregame followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m. The game is also available to stream on NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com.

Vikings girls slowed down by Wolves

The Gibraltar girls' basketball team could not get the offense going early enough in its 48-27 loss to Algoma Saturday.

The Wolves outscored the Vikings 26-11 in the first half thanks to Ryley Zimmerman scoring six of her ten points in the opening frame.

Andie Schar led the Vikings with 14 points with two others pitching four points apiece. Sierra Slaby led all scorers with 15 points for the Wolves.

Viking girls look to tame Wolves

The pursuit for Gibraltar's first win in girls' basketball takes them to Algoma on Saturday.

The Vikings' had been improving ahead of its 51-31 loss to Peshtigo earlier this week. Of its three games where they have scored more than 40 points, two of those have occurred in the last week. Andie Schar continues to see her scoring average rise, pushing close to nine points a contest.

The Wolves lost to Luxemburg-Casco 46-38 in its last game on January 11th, but still has won its last two Packerland Conference games heading into the matchup. Ryley Zimmerman leads the Wolves in scoring at almost 10 points a game while Emily Kirchman is averaging about seven points and seven rebounds a game.

Gibraltar boys experience heartbreak versus Southern Door on 105.1 The GOAT

A late run by Southern Door doomed the Gibraltar boys' basketball from earning a second straight Packerland victory in its 60-53 loss Friday night in Fish Creek.

The Eagles jumped ahead early, scoring the game's first eight points and stretching the lead out to 10 points for much of the half despite the Vikings battling back to make it a two-possession game several times. Jake Schar knocked down a pair of threes to help the Vikings close the gap to just a two-point deficit at half. The Vikings changed up their defense in the second half and their offense took advantage, scoring the first six points of the second half and they would lead by as many as seven points in the second half. A corner three by Jack Peterson swung the momentum back in favor of the Eagles as Nic Pierre would hit a pair of threes that would put the Eagles ahead for good.

The Eagles used a short bench against the Vikings led by Pierre's 19 points and 14 from Drew Daoust. Logan Jeanquart chipped in 10 points of his own in the victory. The Vikings' Jake Schar and Will Friedenfels each got 12 points in the loss. The conference's leading scorer, Gibraltar's Sam Lindenberg, was held to just four points as he had to facilitate the offense in other ways thanks to the Eagles' smothering defense.

Gibraltar will play at Sturgeon Bay on 105.1 The GOAT for a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday tip.

Gibraltar girls can't leash Peshtigo

The Gibraltar girls' basketball team could not keep up with the Peshtigo Bulldogs in their 51-31 defeat Thursday night on the road.

The Vikings kept it close in the early going with the Bulldogs only leading 13-9 a little over halfway through the first half. The Bulldogs would take control from there, outscoring the Vikings 16-4 the rest of the frame to take a comfortable lead into the half. The Vikings would trail by as much as 23 points in the second half before paring it down to the 20 point deficit at the game's end.

The team is back at it on Saturday when they travel to Algoma for a 7:30 p.m. tip.

The Gibraltar Vikings boys' basketball team will visit the upper peninsula Tuesday night when they travel to face Menominee.

Gibraltar boys lose late to Peshtigo on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar boys' basketball team saw another first-half lead slip away as they fell to the Peshtigo Bulldogs 73-64 in Fish Creek.

The Vikings' offense dictated the pace early on in the game, building up an eight-point lead heading into the break. Helping give the Vikings that cushion was Jake Schar hitting two straight three-pointers and Sam Lindenberg scoring 14 of his team-high 20 points.

After the Vikings were able to withstand an initial surge to build a 10-point lead, the Bulldogs swung the pendulum hard in their favor. Muaz Salem, Landon Lemke, and Jacob Berth hit some big shots while sinking the Vikings into a three-minute-plus scoring drought to take the lead and extend it to as much as 11 late in the second half. The Vikings were able to get it to within five points, but the Bulldogs hit their free throws and forced some key turnovers at the end of the game to hold off the rally.
