Vikings snap losing streak in Florence on 105.1 The GOAT

For the first time since October 2023, the Gibraltar Vikings walked off the field as victors after beating Florence 49-20 Thursday night on the road.

For the second straight week, Sean Neal kicked off the Vikings' scoring with a long, 50+ yard run, only to have it matched on the next possession on an Ely Marefke touchdown run. Trailing 8-6, Giovanni Mercier ended three drives with rushing touchdowns, one of which was from over 20 yards out as he bounced off defenders. A long touchdown pass from Luke Deterville to Mason Koski capped off the half with the Vikings holding a 28-14 advantage.

The second half began on a high note with Bairen Lhost cruising to the endzone on an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The two teams struggled to hold the ball with consecutive lost fumbles before Koski hooked up with Deterville to cut the lead again. The Vikings answered with two consecutive scoring drives, capped off by a rushing and receiving touchdown by Parker Gallant.

The Vikings will now prepare to face Algoma, which lost to Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas on Thursday, 24-0 on the road. Tim Kowols will have coverage of the game on 105.1. The GOAT will begin at 6:45 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the opening kickoff at 7 p.m.

Vikings battle Bobcats on 105.1 The GOAT

Two teams looking to bounce back from rough opening week performances will meet under the lights on Thursday when Gibraltar visits Florence.

The Vikings are coming off a 60-14 drubbing at home against Wabeno/Laona. Long touchdowns by Sean Neal on the ground and Bairen Lhost through the air by Giovanni Mercier provided the lone fireworks of the evening. Wyatt Bultman led the way with two tackles, including one for a loss. After the game, head coach Mike Peck lauded Neal and his 116 yards on the ground after playing soccer his previous three years.

The Bobcats are coming off a 33-0 loss to Newman Catholic.

Tim Kowols will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Vikings volleyball splits opening tournament

Luxemburg-Casco

Gibraltar girls volleyball opened their season with a tournament in Peshtigo Tuesday, facing four teams: Green Bay Southwest, Crivitz, Mercer, and Goodman-Pembine. They finished the day with a 2-2 record, narrowly losing their first two matches to Southwest (2-1) and Crivitz (2-0). They then finished strong, defeating Mercer (2-1) and dominating Goodman-Pembine (2-0), winning both sets by double digits, 25-14 and 25-15.

Overall, Gibraltar showed plenty of fight in the opening tournament and looks to continue to grow as a team behind the leadership of their three seniors. The Vikings’ next match is Friday, August 29, in a tournament where they will take on Wisconsin Heights, Central Wisconsin Christian, and Parkview beginning at 2:00 p.m.

United soccer seeks more success in 2025 beginning Tuesday

Fresh off last year's regional title-winning team, Gibraltar/Sevastopol looks to find similar success in 2025 when it begins its campaign against Denmark in Fish Creek.

The United ended last year with a 16-7-1 and a 5-4 regional title win over Amherst. The main thorn in their side last season was Sturgeon Bay, which beat them three times, including a 4-0 loss in the sectional semifinal. A big reason for their success was their senior leadershi,p with three players being named to the All-Packerland Conference first-team. The cupboard is not bare, however, with another strong senior class, Maurico Fernandez, Marco Jauregui, Sean Neal, Brandon Mayorga Obando, and Aaron Tomaszewski, bringing All-Packerland quality to the team this year.

The Vikings had shortened season last year, only registering one result according to WisSports.net.

Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.

Vikings dismantled by Rebels on 105.1 The GOAT

Gibraltar's defense was no match for Wabeno/Laona's offense as the Rebels built up a 44-0 lead en route to a 60-14 win in Fish Creek Friday night.

The pass-catch combination of quarterback Cooper Albrecht to Boone Vanooyen kept the Vikings on their heels for much of the opening 20 minutes, with Vanooyen adding on a punt return touchdown. The game had already entered a running clock when Sean Neal scored the first Vikings points of the 2025 season, scampering in from 60 yards out to make it 44-8. The Rebels matched the score right away with Walker Winkelman finding the Albrecht pass and ran it to the endzone to make a 52-8 game at the break.

Both teams scored once in the second half with Winkelman the beneficiary of a scoop score before Giovanni Mercier found Bairen Lhost from 40-plus yards out to cap the scoring.

Vikings football opens campaign against Rebels on 105.1 The GOAT

The Gibraltar Vikings look to turn the page on a frustrating 2024 season when they open the season at home against Wabeno-Laona on Friday night.

The Vikings enter the year with a new attitude after going winless in 2024, including a 32-0 loss to the Rebels in the season finale. In that matchup, the Rebels rushed for 349 yards and four touchdowns. Head coach Mike Peck says they are focusing on putting their players in position to be successful instead of wins and losses. That will be especially important with six freshmen on the roster. Among the returning players is Giovanni Mercier, who led the team in passing and was second on the team in rushing.

LISTEN TO COACH PECK'S INTERVIEW

The Rebels finished last year with an 8-3 record, falling to Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 30-22 in the Level 1 Playoffs. They welcome back their two biggest offensive threats in Cooper Albrecht and Walker Winkelman. The pair was 1-2 in passing and rushing, while Winkelman was the second leading receiver as well.

Tim Kowols will host the call on 105.1 The GOAT at 6:45 p.m., followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

In other 8-Player Football action, Algoma rolled past NEW Lutheran 34-8 while Sevastopol dominated in its win against Wild Rose 66-8.
