Vikineers soccer hosts Kiel

The Gibraltar/Sevastopol soccer team will face a motivated team Tuesday night when they host Kiel in Fish Creek.

The Raiders are coming off a 3-2 defeat to Sturgeon Bay on Monday, their first loss of the season after beating Omro 2-0 in the opener.

The Vikineers come into the match fresh off of a rough weekend in Winneconne. They lost a close match to Winneconne before suffering 8-0 blowout defeat to West Bend West on Saturday. They beat Algoma in the season opener 1-0 off a penalty kick.

Match time is set for 5:30 p.m.

Gibraltar takes round one against Sevastopol on 105.1 The GOAT

Both teams took some time to get comfortable in game action, but Gibraltar won in a runaway 42-6 over Sevastopol Friday night.

The Vikings and the Pioneers both strutted out new quarterbacks for the game. Brady Kita and Rylan Caldecott ran the offense for the Vikings, while Frank de Young and Logan Schuh did the same for the Pioneers.

A familiar face started the scoring out in the first quarter, with Giuseppe Mercier scored from three yards out to make it 7-0. Capitalizing on a Mercier fumble recovery, Caldecott scored on a pair of rushing plays to extend the lead to 20-0. The passing game was ignited by a 48-yard bomb from Kita to Caldecott to send the Vikings into halftime with a 28-0 lead.

In the third quarter, Kita scampered for 35 yards on a carry before finding Braden Sitte in the endzone from 15 yards out to make it 35-0. Kita would have one more score in his arm, finding Will Friedenfels on a back corner fade to make it 42-0.

The Pioneers would get on the board in the final seconds of the game on what Gibraltar head coach Mike Peck would call a teachable moment. Logan Retzlaff, who had been booming kicks all night long, had his 40-yard field goal attempt blocked by Sitte. With no one paying attention, Alex Andreae picked up the ball and ran it in for the score.

The player of the game was Caldecott, who in his return to football scored three total touchdowns and set up another score with a 35 yard pass to Sitte.

The Vikings return to action on Thursday when they host Suring while the Pioneers will travel to Gillett.

Gibraltar hosts Sevastopol in football opener on 105.1 The GOAT

You will get a double dose of Door County's eight-man football rivalry this season as Gibraltar hosts Sevastopol Friday night.

The new Peninsula Conference for eight-man football created a scheduling quirk for both schools, necessitating the two teams to play a pair of games to reach the necessary eight contests this year. This Friday's game is considered a non-conference game, while the matchup in October in Institute will count as a Peninsula Conference game.

The Vikings won three of their final four games last season to finish just outside the playoff picture at 4-4. The Pioneers went 2-7, finishing their season with three tough losses. Last year's matchup provided plenty of offense as the two teams combined close to 80 points and over 700 yards in the Vikings' 43-36 victory. Both teams bring back to of their best performers in the game in Gibraltar's Braeden Sitte (10 catches, 133 yards) and Sevastopol's Cesar Sandoval (154 total yards, three touchdowns), but will have to navigate it without their field generals in tow after losing them to graduation.

Tim Kowols and Jacob Nate will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Gibraltar's Peck excited for what season could hold

Gibraltar Head Football Coach Mike Peck appreciates the enthusiasm his team is showing to get the season underway.

The Vikings bounced back from a winless spring season in 2021 to go 4-4 in the fall, including three of their final four contests. While many went on to play for the sectional champion basketball team and the regional champion baseball team, a dedicated group of players used the time off from the football season to lift and do other offseason work to prepare for what they hope will be a return to the playoffs for the first time since they made it to the second round in 2019. Peck says he is trying to balance his upperclassmen's enthusiasm with getting his underclassmen acclimated to the high school eight-man game.

The Vikings will host a community corn roast and cookout before their season opener against Sevastopol at 7 p.m. The game will be carried live on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m.
