Gibraltar takes a look at winter sports season

The Gibraltar Area School Board will look at what can be done to kids back in action this winter sports season.

The school canceled its fall sports season due to COVID-19 before the seasons ever got underway statewide. Based on their threshold level plan in place to decide on whether or not in-person classes can take place, it is likely that team activities would only have been allowed to take place virtually. Superintendent Tina Van Meer says the Packerland Conference is moving ahead with its winter sports season and the school board has to look at how those standards and its own threshold level plan mesh.

The Gibraltar Area School Board will meet on Monday beginning at 7 p.m.

Winter sports just one month out

The fall season may feel like they just began, but the WIAA winter sports season is right around the corner.

Last Friday marked the one month to go mark for sports like girls basketball, gymnastics, and hockey to start practicing. Wrestling, boys basketball. and swimming would start a week after on November 23rd.

Wrestlers can actually start doing their skinfold measurements today ahead of its season start on November 23rd. Unlike the fall season, there is no "second season" planned for the winter if it does not go off as planned due to COVID-19.

Laughlin commits to Madison College

After being courted by several football programs, Gibraltar senior Alex Laughlin is shifting his focus to baseball.

The two-sport star committed to Madison College this week to play baseball after receiving football offers from DII and DIII schools during the offseason. Laughlin helped the Vikings win regional championships in 2018 and 2019 and was a contributor on this summer's Sister Bay Bays squad. Madison College, a two-year junior college located in Wisconsin's capitol city, has won 37 conference championships and has placed in the national tournament 14 times.
