Gibraltar baseball drops both games at Adams-Friendship Tournament

The Gibraltar baseball team found themselves in deep holes in both of their games on Saturday, losing to host Adams-Friendship 17-11 and St. Mary Springs 10-0.

In their game against Adams-Friendship, the Vikings found themselves up 6-0 before giving up seven runs in the bottom of the second inning and at least three runs in each of the next three innings. Walks plagued the pitching staff as they handed out 15 free passes compared to five strikeouts. Hayden Reetz led the team offensively with three RBI and a hit. Brady Kita went 2-3 with three runs scored and two more batted in while Rylan Caldecott, Bennett Isaacson, Nathan Merkel, Aaron Brey, and Aiden Purinton all registered one RBI in the loss. Adams-Friendship had four players post at least two RBI.

Against St. Mary's Springs, the Vikings' pitchers allowed five more walks but the defense did them no favors with four errors in the field. Kita and Purinton collected the lone hits in the shutout loss that extended their losing streak to four. Jack Duffy took the loss, giving up seven runs while walking four and striking out two in three innings of work. St. Mary's Springs scored at least one run in each of the five innings played.

Gibraltar's Sitte captures win at Spartan Invite

Braden Sitte captured the lone event win for the Gibraltar track teams at the Spartan Invite hosted by Luxemburg-Casco Thursday afternoon.

Sitte leapt to his title with high jump of 5'8. The Vikings boys' team posted four other finishes in the top-five.

The girls had no event victories, but came close in several. McKailey Reisen took second in the high jump and saw the 4x800m relay also come home with a silver medal. Five other events saw Vikings in the top five.

Vikings baseball takes care of business in doubleheader

The Vikings of Gibraltar boys baseball team has kept their undefeated record at the beginning of the season perfect, defeating the Algoma Wolves in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday.

In Game One, it was a 10-0 victory in just five innings as the Vikings looked to be the force early on in the day. After 5 runs in the bottom of the fifth gave the pitcher Noah Greene room to work with on the bump. Greene threw all five innings in the first game, only allowing four hits on seven strikeouts.

In Game Two, the Vikings played a much closer game, squeaking out a 4-2 victory as the away team over the Wolves. The two teams were scorless until Gibraltar scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Algoma would answer right back with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Gibraltar pulled away with two runs in the final inning, and shutting Algoma down in the bottom of the seventh to claim the 4-2 victory.

Gibraltar will now take on Southern Door in a Doubleheader on Tuesday.

Vikings baseball gears up for Sheboygan Lutheran

The Gibraltar Vikings will look to keep their undefeated record alive when they host the Sheboygan Lutheran Crusaders on Friday afternoon.

Gibraltar finished up their second game of their doubleheader against NEW Lutheran by a score of 13-2. Braden Kita went 4-4 in the second game against the Blazers, and Gibraltar is continuing their success from last season where they made the sectionals in the playoffs. Hayden Reetz was also a bit part of the success for the Vikings, going 2-3 in the game with two runs scored.

The Crusaders enter Friday's game winless, with an 0-4 record in their games played so far this season. In their most recent game, Sheboygan Lutheran fell to Oostburg by a score of 6-0.

First pitch of the game is set for 5:00 p.m.

Gibraltar softball searches for first win against Crusaders

Even thought the beginning of the season has not gone their way, the Gibraltar Vikings still have time to turn their season around, beginning with a non-conference game against Sheboygan Lutheran Friday.

The Vikings are 0-4 overall and in the Packerland Conference and will look to get a win over the Crusaders in their first non-conference action. Gibraltar did not have a good result in their game 2 against NEW Lutheran, and was no-hit in both games against Sevastopol last weekend.

Sheboygan Lutheran is 2-2 so far this season, and in their most recent game picked up a victory over the Oostburg Flying Dutchmen 17-10 on 13 hits.

First pitch from Gibraltar is slated for 5:00 p.m.

Gibraltar track teams take second at Sevastopol quad

Gibraltar's track teams hung around in the top three in most events, helping both squads earn second place finishes.

On the boys' side, Braden Sitte ran a personal best in the 200m and Garrett Voight did the same in the 400m to win their events. The pair also posted top-5 performances in the  long jump and high jump.

For the girls, Aria Nordahl (200m) and McKailey Reisen (100m hurdles, high jump) won their events while the Vikings boasted seven other top three performances.

Gibraltar/Washington baseball Island finishes off Blazers in rout

After waiting a week to finish the game due to darkness, the Gibraltar/Washington Vikings finished off the NEW Lutheran Blazers on Tuesday afternoon 13-2 in Green Bay.   Scoring nine runs in the fourth inning, the Vikings had broken open a 2-2 game and never looked back.  Picking up in the fifth inning the Vikings added two runs in the sixth and claimed the win after six innings.  Aaron Brey had four RBIs and Brady Kita went four-for-four while scoring three runs to lead the Vikings.  Bennett Isaacson had pitched four innings and gave up just three hits and two earned runs while striking out 10 Blazers last Tuesday to earn the win while Brey finished the last two innings yesterday to close out the game.

Vikings baseball resumes action with NEW Lutheran

After edging out the first victory against the Blazers in their doubleheader, the Gibraltar Vikings will continue play Tuesday afternoon with a considerable lead built up.

Darkness delayed the second game between the Gibraltar Vikings and NEW Lutheran Blazers, but Gibraltar was convincingly in the drivers seat in that game, as they will begin the game in the top of the fifth inning, with the Vikings leading 11-2. It was Will Friedenfels with the great first game against NEW Lutheran, and Gibraltar will look to seal off the win to make it a five game winning streak, and a 5-0 start to the regular season.

For NEW Lutheran, they will look to avoid a 1-3 start in the Packerland as they try and fight to keep pace with the leaders of Oconto, Southern Door, and Gibraltar.

The second game will resume at 4:30 p.m.

Gibraltar softball plays second against Blazers

The Gibraltar Vikings softball team will complete game two of their doubleheader with NEW Lutheran that was played back on April 11th on Tuesday night.

The Blazers won game one against the Vikings last Tuesday by a score of 17-3 and the Vikings will look to split the series with NEW Lutheran. Gibraltar is coming off of back to back games where they were no-hit by the Sevastopol Pioneers, and will look to shake off those losses against NEW Lutheran. The Blazers on the other hand are on the same wavelength, losing 26-0 and 17-4 to Peshtigo over the weekend.

The game will resume play at 4:30 p.m.

Vikings baseball improves to 5-0 with Pioneers sweep

The Gibraltar Vikings capped off a perfect week with a pair of victories over county rivals Sevastopol on Saturday in Institute.

In their day opening 10-2 win, the Vikings plated five runs in the first inning and made it 8-0 before the Pioneers were able to scratch across their first run. Noah Greene  went five innings allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out seven. Bennett Isaacson went 1-2 while knocking in three runs for the Vikings. Hayden Reetz went 3-4 with a triple while Rylan Caldecott banged out two doubles. Mason Bosman led the Pioneers offensively, going 1-3 and an RBI.

It was more of the same in the Vikings' 13-1 victory in game 2 as Gibraltar scored seven runs in the second inning and were leading 10-0 before the Pioneers' lone tally in the fourth. The Vikings would add three runs in the bottom of the fourth to force the game to end after five innings. Caldecott added another double as he went 2-3 with two RBI. Aaron Brey added to his impressive start to the season, going 2-4 with four RBI. Brey also closed the door on both games pitching in relief. Will Friedenfels and Isaacson also had multiple RBI days.

Lecy, Reisen lead Vikings at Oconto Quad

The Gibraltar Vikings' track team got their season off to a good start Tuesday night at the Oconto Quad featuring NEW Lutheran, Oconto, Peshtigo, and Sevastopol.

McKailey Reisen led the way with a pair of wins in the 100m hurdles and the high jump. Her personal record in the 200m was good for 5th place. Teammate Betsy Lecy posted her event victory in the 1600m. On the boys' side, the 4x200m relay captured the top spot on the podium.

Friedenfels' fly sends Gibraltar to victory over Crivitz on 105.1 The GOAT

A three-run homer for Will Friedenfels was the lift the Gibraltar Vikings needed to get past the Crivitz Wolverines in an 8-5 win in Fish Creek Friday evening.

Both teams' starting pitchers labored through their two-plus innings of work with the Wolverines striking first on a collection of walks and wild pitches. It was until Aaron Brey came in to stop the Wolverines' hitless rally at three runs. The Vikings would draw their own walks to load the bases before Braden Kita scored on a wild pitch and a Hayden Reetz drove in another run. Marshall Maltby tied the game when he was hit by a pitch.

The turning point came in the Vikings' half of the fourth inning when Kita and Brey singled to start things before Friedenfels delivered the game's big blow, a three-run homer over the left-centerfield fence.

The Vikings would tack on their final two runs when Rylan Caldecott followed a Carl Burgess single with one of his own, but three straight errors on the play brought Caldecott all the way home.

The Wolverines would cut the deficit thanks to a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly, but Kita would end the game in the bottom of the seventh.

The Vikings will play Sevastopol in a Packerland Conference doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. The Pioneers are coming off a 4-2 loss to Goodman-Pembine on Thursday.

Vikings baseball welcomes Crivitz in non-conference play on 105.1 The GOAT

After taking a win in the lone finished game of a doubleheader against NEW Lutheran on Tuesday, Gibraltar will move to a non-conference game when they take on Crivitz Friday afternoon.

On Tuesday, Will Friedenfels took his basketball success and brought it over to the baseball diamond as he went 3-3 in the opening game, and scored in all three at bats. Carl Burgess was an RBI machine for the Vikings, driving in three runs. Noah Greene got the win for the Vikings going six innings allowing 2 runs, both of them earned. The Vikings were scheduled to play Crivitz last season at home, but the game was canceled and instead got the home game this season.

The Wolverines bring in a high-powered lineup with many different players that can swing the bat well. Crivitz in their first four games has scored 39 runs, including wins of 18-0 over Gillett/Suring and 14-6 over Menominee (MI). This will be the second game of a back to back for the Wolverines as they took on Laona/Wabeno Thursday.

The game is set for 4:30 p.m.  Tim Kowols and Reece Robillard will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Vikings take down Blazers in Game One; have Game Two postponed

The Gibraltar Vikings took care of business in the first game of their doubleheader against NEW Lutheran 6-3, but will have to come back to complete the second after darkness postponed that game.

Will Friedenfels took his basketball success and brought it over to the baseball diamond as he went 3-3 in the opening game, and scored in all three at bats. Carl Burgess was an RBI machine for the Vikings, driving in three runs. Noah Greene got the win for the Vikings going six innings allowing 2 runs, both of them earned.

NEW Lutheran struck out 10 times in the game and left seven runners on base through the seven innings of play. Elijah Meerstein went 1-3 on the night, joined by Jack Henschel who went 1-4.

The second game of the series will be made up at a later date as Gibraltar/Washington Island leads the game 11-2 in the top of the 5th.

Gibraltar softball gets visit from NEW Lutheran

A difficult season last year for Gibraltar can be wiped away starting Tuesday afternoon as the Vikings host NEW Lutheran for their season opener.

0-11 Overall and 0-9 in the Packerland Conference was not the season the team was looking for, but that can be forgotten once the first pitch of the 2023 season is thrown on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings potentially return most if not all of their roster coming into the season and can use that to their advantage this season. Gibraltar will look to get off on the right foot against the Blazers.

NEW Lutheran was towards the bottom of the Packerland Conference as well when the season concluded, finishing their season 4-13 overall and 2-10 in the conference. A relatively young team for the Blazers will give them high potential for the season. NEW Lutheran won their first game of the season last year against Sturgeon Bay and will look to repeat that against Gibraltar this season.

First pitch from Gibraltar is set for 4:30 p.m.

Vikings baseball opens season with Blazers

Being close to the state tournament has been a familiar experience for many Gibraltar sports in recent seasons, and the baseball team will look to add to that list of teams, beginning their 2023 season at home against NEW Lutheran.

After winning the regional title last season over Reedsville after receiving a one seed, Gibraltar fell to Iola-Scandinavia 6-1 in the sectional semifinals. Head Coach Jay Kita is the only returning coach from last season in Door County, and is set to lead a Vikings team with potentially two returning All-Conference selections in Braden Kita and Rylan Caldecott. After going 9-13 overall last season, the success of past teams and even past sports will look to be built upon by the baseball team.

NEW Lutheran found themselves in many close games last season, ultimately finishing their season at 6-13 overall and 1-10 in the Packerland conference. Elijah Meerstein, Jack Henschel and Sam Hillmann were strong players for the Blazers last season, and could potentially return to make the Blazers a sneaky team early in the season.

First pitch from Gibraltar is set for 4:30 p.m.
