Vikings boys edge Eagles

For the second time this year, the Gibraltar boys basketball team survived a one-possession game against Southern Door late to earn a 52-51 victory.

The Vikings opened the game by scoring the first seven points and eventually built a 21-point lead behind points in the paint from Kayin Jackson and Wyatt Bultman, along with 3-pointers from Owen Dannhausen and Marco Jauregui.

The Eagles reeled in the Vikings thanks to a pair of 3-pointers from Eli Jadin and another from Ryker Lohrey. The Vikings were outscored 30-20 in the second half, but Bultman’s sixth basket in the paint during the period proved to be the difference, helping Gibraltar secure its first winning streak against the Eagles in well over a decade.

Bultman led the Vikings with 22 points, while Jauregui scored 12 and Jackson added 11, highlighted by a first-half dunk. Lohrey paced the Eagles with 12 points while Dawson Schwartz added 11 points.

Head coach Travis Ward praised his team’s defense after the win, highlighting the work of his senior guard. “Aaron Brey did a fantastic job guarding Lauden Berg (seven points), which allowed us to be more patient on the offensive end,” he said.

The Vikings are back in action Saturday when they travel to Kewaunee for a matinee. The Eagles will return to action Feb. 17 against Kewaunee.
