A mid-game rainstorm helped the offense blossom for Marion in the final two innings as they came from behind to knock Gibraltar/Washington Island out of the WIAA Tournament 20-13.
Trailing 1-0 in the first inning, the Vikings scored three times in their half of the frame, taking advantage of Heidi Krueger's early command, a base hit from Gabi Solomon, an error, and a fly out to take a 3-1 lead.
The Vikings stretched their lead to 9-1 in the second inning, scoring four times on free passes, a passed ball and a RBI single from Celeste Ashley. A mid-game rain hassled both pitchers in the middle innings, but the Vikings still had an 11-4 lead entering the sixth inning when disaster struck.
The Vikings gave up seven runs in the sixth inning and nine runs in the seventh innings with the Mustangs' Bailee Miller, Neveah Ewald, and Julia James delivering the biggest blows. Isla Fagundes and Gallant drove in runs late, but it was not enough to flip the game back into the Vikings' favor.
Solomon led the team in the season finale, going 2-5 with an RBI. Gallant, Mia Glocke, and Ashley also had hits while Ashlyn Lautenbach, Ashley, Fagundes (2), Gallant (2), Emilie Glocke registered RBI. Glocke took the loss in the circle, allowing 18 runs (10 ER) on 10 hits while striking out 10 across 6.2 innings with her sister Mia giving her arm a brief break in the sixth inning. The Vikings' season ends with a record of 5-20.
