Vikings Split Doubleheader with Oconto

Gibraltar/Washington Island Vikings split a doubleheader with Oconto on Friday, rallying for a dramatic walk-off win in the opener before falling in the nightcap.

The Vikings opened the twinbill with a 4-3 extra-inning victory, capped by Owen Dannhausen’s solo home run to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Gibraltar/Washington Island grabbed an early lead in the first when Aaron Brey drove in a run on a groundout. The Vikings added two more runs in the third inning after an Oconto error and Dannhausen’s RBI single down the left field line.

Oconto tied the game in the seventh with the help of a Viking error and a hit batter before Dannhausen delivered the game-winning blast an inning later.

Dannhausen finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Cam Munao also collected two hits. Brey started on the mound and allowed three unearned runs over 6 2/3 innings while striking out eight. Hobbs Emerson earned the win in relief.

The momentum shifted in the second game as Oconto pulled away for a 14-4 victory.

The Vikings scored first when Brey singled home a run in the opening inning, but Oconto responded quickly with a three-run first inning and added four more runs in the second.

Oconto broke the game open with a seven-run third inning highlighted by Kroll’s three-run homer to left field.

Despite the loss, the Vikings totaled nine hits. Munao, Brey and Miles Richmond each had two hits, while Brey drove in two runs.
