Algoma softball travel to Southern Door for doubleheader

Two of the top softball teams in the Packerland Conference square off on Friday afternoon when Algoma travels to Brussels to face Southern Door for a doubleheader.

The Wolves won their last game 8-4 against Coleman on Tuesday. Macie Zimmerman was dealing in the circle and the offense backing her up with 12 hits. Zimmerman went all seven innings, punching out 11 and scattering seven hits. The Wolves jumped on Coleman early, putting three on the board in the first on doubles from Zimmerman and Mackenzie Lischka followed by an RBI single from Ryley Tweedy. Lischka finished a perfect 3-for-3 on the day. Natalie Ray was the run producer, driving in three despite going 1-for-4. Zimmerman, Madison Schneider, Tweedy, and Amya Lukes each added multiple hits as Algoma kept the pressure on all game long.

The Eagles squeezed in one of their two games against Sevastopol earlier this week, winning the game 14-0. The Eagles put six on the board in the first inning alone. Lilly Vandertie got things started with a two-run shot to left, and Samantha Melville followed with a two-run double to keep it rolling. Melville did it all, tossing four scoreless innings with five strikeouts while going 2-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate. Alanah Kaye led the offense with three hits, and Harper Kramer and Grace Vogel each went deep. Southern Door finished with 15 hits and didn't commit an error.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Algoma's Zimmerman and Leist sign NLI

Two of Algoma's most decorated senior athletes made their collegiate plans official on Tuesday by National Letter of Intent for their respective schools.

Basketball player Braeden Leist will continue his athletic career at Lakeland University after All-Packerland Conference season that saw him finish in the top three on the Wolves in scoring (18.1 ppg), assists (3.5 apg), rebounds (6.4 rpg), and steals (1.8 ppg). Leist says he has always wanted to play college basketball at the next level and he is excited for the opportunity in Sheboygan.

Softball player Macie Zimmerman signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her career at St. Norbert College. Zimmerman has been one of the school's ace pitchers since she joined the team her freshman season, posting several no-hitters and perfect games. She is excited to join the Green Knights next year, but she has some unfinished business left to settle with the Wolves before she heads to De Pere for college.

Both athletes are still in the mix with their spring sports teams with Zimmerman pitching for the softball team on Friday at Southern Door and Leist suiting up for the baseball team at home against Sturgeon Bay on Friday. Both doubleheaders begin at 4:30 p.m.

Algoma Invite led by Sturgeon Bay and Kewaunee

The Clipper boys topped the field with 106 points, followed by Little Chute with 89 and Kewaunee third at 68.5. Algoma's boys finished fourth with 67. On the girls side, Kewaunee won with 102 points, Denmark second with 81, Sturgeon Bay third with 63, and Gibraltar fourth with 60.

The Algoma Wolves softball team outscored Sevastopol 21-1 across two games Thursday to complete a doubleheader sweep in Packerland Conference play.

In a 7-0 win, the Wolves scored four runs in the fourth inning to create some separation. For the Pioneers, Adi Sawyer and Kaile Vandenbogart collected the team’s only hits. Leah Schopf took the loss, allowing seven runs — two earned — on 10 hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings.

In a 14-1 victory, Zimmerman, Natalie Ray and Amaya Lukes all doubled in a game that saw the Wolves score at least two runs in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings. Lukes and Lischka each drove in three runs, while Ray added two RBIs.

Lischka earned the win in the circle for the Wolves, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out two.

For the Pioneers, a first-inning RBI single by Brynn Schartner was one of the few bright spots of the day.
