Algoma boys head to Green Bay for Blazers matchup

The Algoma boys' basketball team hopes to duplicate the girls' success against their Green Bay rivals when they travel to face NEW Lutheran.

The Wolves' Parker Lischka led the way with 19 points, while Grant Vandervest added eight points in the loss. Three others scored at least three points.

The Blazers have just one game to their credit this year, beating Sheboygan Christian 68-57. Sam Hillmann led the way with 18 points, while Griffin Steffel added 16 points in the victory.

Tip-off in Green Bay is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Algoma Wolves girls basketball team held a five-point lead going into halftime but could not hold on in a 48-40 loss to state qualifier Mishicot Monday night.

The Wolves received balanced scoring throughout the game, scoring 20 points in each half. Their defense kept the Indians down for one half as they took a 20-15 lead into the break, led by 10 points by Sierra Slaby. The Indians flipped the script in the second half, holding Slaby scoreless while outscoring the Wolves 33-20 to take the win. Cora Stodola led the comeback for the Indians, scoring 13 of her game-high 18 points in the second half.

Algoma girls continue tough stretch at Mishicot

The Algoma girls basketball team continues its murderer's row of season-opening games when it visits Mishicot for a 7:15 p.m. tip.

The Wolves have opened their season with three games against regional champions from a year ago, two of which battled their way to the state tournament games at the Resch Center. In their last game, the Wolves battled hard against the bigger competition on Thursday, but they are still looking for their first win of the year after falling to Freedom 48-27. The Wolves were chasing a single-digit deficit heading into the break, but the Irish showed why they won their conference last year, outscoring Algoma 22-9 in the second half. Ryley Zimmerman led the Wolves with 12 points, while Sierra Slaby chipped in nine points, registering the team's lone three-pointer on the night.

The Indians fell in the state semifinal against Aquinas last year and have opened the year 1-1. In their Kettle Moraine Thanksgiving Tournament appearance, they lost to Edgewood 70-42.

Algoma boys prepare to battle Two Rivers

Early morning practices hope to pay off for the Algoma Wolves Boys Varsity team as they prepare for their season opener against the Two Rivers Purple Raiders.

Algoma went toe to toe with Two Rivers last year, with the final score being 64-33 in a Purple Raiders win. Algoma, coached by coach Eric Schneider, is determined to make sure they beat the Raiders this year, and the same goes for Two Rivers.

The Wolves finished Schneider’s first season as head coach with a 7-16 record, falling to Coleman 44-42 in the regional round of the WIAA Tournament. Parker Lischka returns as the team's top returning scorer at just under eight points per game.  The Raiders lost to Souther Door in the regional round of the WIAA Tournament, culminating their season with an 11-15 mark.

Algoma girls not hiding from competition, takes on Freedom

You can't accuse the Algoma Wolves of dodging tough competition to start their season as they prepare to face sectional finalist Freedom on Thursday night.

The Wolves were led by Rylee Zimmerman, who finished with 10 points, scoring almost half of the team's points in a 45-22 loss to regional champion Bonduel on Tuesday.

The Irish won the North Eastern Conference with a perfect 18-0 mark and a 26-2 overall mark. They were two points away from a trip to the Resch Center for the state tournament, losing to Kewaskum 48-46 in the sectional final. They will have to try to find similar success this year without their top three scorers after they all graduated.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Lady Wolves lose opener to Bonduel

The Algoma Wolves fell to the Bonduel Bears 45-22 in a non-conference opener at home.  The Wolves could not overcome a 30-16 halftime deficit and loss to a Bonduel team that made it to the sectionals last season and returned two of their top scorers.

Algoma now will play at Freedom in another non-conference game.

Algoma girls open season vs. Bonduel

The Algoma girls' basketball team will open their 2023-2024 campaign with a non-conference tilt against Bonduel.

The Wolves will have to replace the since-graduated Emily Kirchman, who was second in scoring and first in rebounding for the team.
