Algoma pole vaulting duo begin state run Friday

Algoma's Brennan Buckman and Estella Marrero are ready to soar in LaCrosse this weekend as they compete in the WIAA State Track Meet.

With a height of 9-06, Marrero is the 13th-seeded pole vaulter in the field when she competes on Friday, beginning at 9:45 p.m.

Buckman can soak in the experience until he competes at 10 a.m. on Saturday. At 12-09, Buckman is seeded ninth but it is part of a seven-person log jam that could have placed him as high as fifth.

Wolves' rally falls short in regional title game vs. Chilton

A three-run rally in the sixth inning gave the Algoma baseball team a chance but ultimately was not enough in a 4-3 loss to Chilton Thursday in the regional title game.

The Tigers scored twice in the first inning and one more in the second to build a 3-0 run lead before the Wolves could register a second baserunner. After the Tigers added what proved to be a crucial insurance run in the fifth inning, the Wolves began their rally. After loading the bases on three walks, Charlie Prokash drove in a pair with a RBI single before Jacob Massey drove in the third run. They had the tying run on base in the seventh before the Tigers were able to escape with the win.

In addition to Prokash and Massey, Parker Lischka registered the only other hit for the Wolves. Carson Leist took the loss for the Wolves on the mound, allowing four runs (2 ER) on five hits while striking out five.

Wolves advance to regional title game after shutting out Jets

Charlie Prokash ensured there would be another day to the Algoma baseball team's season as his complete game effort led the Wolves to a 3-0 victory over Roncalli on Wednesday.

Prokash went the distance in the win, allowing no runs on four hits while striking out 15. His outing made an early RBI double by Jordan Fenendael loom large as he drove in Parker Lischka to open the scoring in the second inning. The Wolves added insurance in the fifth inning when Carson Leist and Prokash clubbed back-to-back run-scoring hits to make it 3-0.

The Wolves outhit the Jets 8-4 with Chase Romdenne, Carson Leist, and Fenendael boasting two-hit days.

They are back in action Thursday evening when they travel to Chilton for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Algoma softball's season ends in Mishicot

The Algoma Wolves softball team struggled to get on the scoreboard offensively as they fell to Mishicot 4-0 in the sectional semifinal on Wednesday.

Wolves' pitcher Macie Zimmerman and Indians hurler Kiran Sanford were locked in a duel for the entire game, combining to allow just four hits (3 to 1) while striking out 21 (7 to 14). The Indians broke through in the opening inning when Kasey Brouchoud singled in a run to make it 1-0. It would stay that way until the fifth inning when the Indians scored three times, two of which came on an error.

Brooke Mattson registered the team's lone hit to lead off the fourth inning, but the Wolves were retired in order the rest of the way.

The loss spoiled a special season for the Wolves as they went 14-7 en route to a Packerland Conference championship and a regional crown.

Wolves softball battles Indians in sectional semi-final in rescheduled Wednesday tilt

NOTE: After the game was rained out Tuesday, the rescheduled game time is now 4:30 p.m. in Mishicot

The Algoma softball team can get one step close to Madison on Tuesday with a win over Mishicot on the road Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolves went through conference rival Sevastopol 4-1 to earn their regional championship. The Wolves scored all of their runs in the fourth inning, starting with a Brooke Mattson double that drove in Jadyn Nellis and Madison Schneider. They doubled their lead a few batters later when Macie Zimmerman drove in a run on a groundout and Nora Krause singled in another. Zimmerman took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before Addison Schauske homered against her positional counterpart to give the Pioneers a glimmer of hope. Zimmerman did not allow that hope to fester, recording a strikeout and a flyout to win the game. She ended up with seven strikeouts from the circle. Schneider had two hits while Mattson, Krause, and Nellis registered the other ones. The Wolves have split their last eight games heading into the matchup.

The Indians enter the game 23-3 on the season, winning their last six. They have only one run since their last loss on May 10th, outscoring them 61-1. They no-hit St. Mary Springs in a 1-0 win last Thursday to clinch their regional title.

Gametime is set for 3 p.m.
