Algoma boys can't douse Blazer offense

The Algoma High School boys basketball team kept it close Thursday night but could not make a late rally against NEW Lutheran. The Wolves dropped a Packerland Conference matchup to the Blazers, 80-74. Thursday’s contest comes after allowing 100 points to Kewaunee on Tuesday.

Carter Zimmerman was again the leading scorer for Algoma with 22 points. Marshal Bukowski followed up a sterling performance against Sturgeon Bay with another good one for NEW Lutheran. Bukowski had 23.

Algoma’s next game is in one week at Oconto as the Wolves will try for their first league win of the season.

Second half sparks Algoma's win

Algoma used a big second half to earn its second win of the season Monday night.

Tied at 21 at the break, the Wolves outscored NEWCHAA 32-20 in the second half to earn the 53-41 victory in Algoma. Owen Robertson led the Wolves with 16 points while Trevor Nell chipped in another 11 points, Robertson did his damage from behind the arc, drilling four three-pointers in the win. The Wolves hosted Gibraltar in their next game on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Algoma boys basketball face NEWCHAA

The Northeast Wisconsin Christian Homeschoolers Athletic Association boys' basketball team continues their tour of Packerland Conference schools with a game at Algoma Monday night.

The Wolves come into the game a week removed from their first win of the season, a 47-43 road decision over Gresham last Tuesday. NEWCHAA hosted Sevastopol over the weekend after losing to them earlier this month 100-69. Carter Zimmerman continues to be a bright spot on the team, leading the Wolves in points, rebounds and assists. (15.9/7.8/2.8).

Monday's game begins at 7:30 p.m.

Algoma boys win first game of the season

The Algoma High School boys basketball team has a tally in the win column for the first time in the 2019-2020 season. The Wolves defeated Gresham Community School, 47-43, on Tuesday night. Gresham entered the game with three wins on the year out of the Central Wisconsin Conference. Algoma returns to the court on Friday against a hot Sturgeon Bay squad, the first of three consecutive home games for the Wolves as they try to build momentum and turn around a 0-9 start.

Algoma girls scrape by Sturgeon Bay

The Algoma High School girls basketball team won a hard-fought, defensive battle at Sturgeon Bay Tuesday night, 36-31. Senior guard Chloe Spitzer led the team with 14 points, the only Algoma player in double figures. Algoma improves to 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the Packerland Conference. For Sturgeon Bay, Sarah Bridenhagen led her team with 14 points and was the only scorer in double figures. Sturgeon Bay is also 5-7 overall but they have played one fewer conference game and sit at 3-4 in the Packerland.

Algoma claws back against Sevastopol

Down by five at the break, the Algoma Wolves used a 31-17 run in the second half to beat Sevastopol 46-37.

The Wolves were paced in scoring by Halle Panger with 11 points and Hanna Wiese with 10 points. They also hit two more three-point shots than the Pioneers and took 12 more free throw attempts, going 14-28 from the line. Zoe Kuehn led the Pioneers in scoring with 14 points.

Algoma boys can't collar Peshtigo

The Algoma High School boys basketball team is still looking for its first win of the season after falling at Peshtigo, 57-41, on Friday night. The Wolves had the game’s leading scorer overall in Carter Zimmerman. His 21 points were not enough to offset the balanced attack of the Bulldogs. Luke McMahon dropped in 17 with Seth Davis chipping in 13 and Tanner Marquardt contributed eight points. Algoma’s next game is against Sevastopol. Looking at their schedule, if the Wolves fail to pick up the win against the Pioneers they may be searching for a while. Games against Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay make the middle of January a tough stretch on the calendar.
