Wolves softball one game away after Tuesday win

The Algoma Wolves softball team is just one game away from the state tournament in Madison as they took down the St. Mary Catholic Zephyrs 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the strong pitching from freshman Macie Zimmerman that set the tone for Algoma, as she started the game shutting down the Zephyr offense in order. She would single to load the bases in the bottom half of the first inning, then Nora Krause would single home a run to make it 1-0 Algoma. Hannah Nell would then drive in the second run of the inning and the Wolves would shock St. Mary Catholic early 2-0.

After Zimmerman got through the first two innings in just 27 pitches the Zephyrs would respond with a run of their own in the top of the third inning on a passed ball scoring Rhiannon Reichenbacher making the game 2-1.

The Wolves would get that run back in the bottom of the fourth after a single and a steal from Brooke Mattson would set up Ryley Zimmerman to sacrifice Mattson over to third. Macie Zimmerman would then double in Mattson to give Algoma the 3-1 lead.

Adding on one in the fifth and sixth were the Wolves after St. Mary Catholic scored one in the top of the sixth to make the final 5-2. The Wolves will now travel to Crivitz on Thursday to face Iola-Scandinavia in the sectional final matchup with a trip to Goodman Diamond in Madison in sight.

St. Mary Catholic come riding into Algoma on a seven-game winning streak, including their own slim 4-2 regional championship win over Reedsville. The team provides plenty of offense, scoring more than 10 runs nine times in the year.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Algoma baseball takes tournament road with Iola-Scandinavia

The Algoma baseball team will stay at home Tuesday afternoon when they welcome Iola-Scandinavia.

Carson Leist helped Algoma shut down and blowout their visitors from St. Thomas Aquinas last Thursday. Leist went all five innings in the mercy-rule-shortened contest, allowing just three hits but striking out eight.  He also went 3-3 at the plate while knocking in a run. It was part of a pair of four-run innings for the Wolves, which led to the rout. Grant Vandervest added two hits while Jordan Fenendael knocked in a pair of runs in the victory.

Iola-Scandinavia knocked off Sevastopol 12-2 in their playoff tournament opener last Thursday. The team has won three of their last four games to chase away the memories of an eight-game losing skid earlier in the season.

First pitch is set for 5 p.m.

Algoma softball walks off with regional title

The drama was well worth it for the Algoma softball team as they beat St. Mary's Springs 8-7 in walk-off fashion.

St. Mary's Springs set the tone early as they plated four in the first inning against pitcher Macie Zimmerman. The Wolves would chip away in subsequent innings with Nora Krause's RBI single in the first inning and Brooke Mattson's swipe of home on a wild pitch. They would take the lead in the fourth inning with their own four-running inning thanks to Sierra Slaby's RBI double and a three-run home run by Amelia Robinson. Down 6-4, St. Mary's Springs would mount their own comeback with two runs their next time up to tie the game and took the lead on a Waechter homer in the sixth inning. The Wolves would not score until Jaydyn Nellis cleared the bases on a triple to drive in Hannah Nell and Teagen Luedke and send the team to next week's WIAA Sectional. Macie Zimmerman picked up the win in the circle as she went the distance, allowing seven runs (4 ER) and 11 hits while striking out four.

The Wolves (16-6) host second-seeded St. Mary's Catholic in a sectional semifinal Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The winner plays for a shot at state Thursday at Crivitz vs. either Bonduel or Iola-Scandinavia.

Wolves set records in Marathon track sectional

Logan Borths may be the only Algoma athlete representing his school at next weekend's state track meet in LaCrosse, but the rest of the team has plenty to be proud of after competing in the WIAA Sectional meet hosted by Marathon on Saturday.

Austin Miller (pole vault), Isabella McCosky (300m hurdles), Faith Gerdmann (shot put and discus), and Xadria Duffeck (triple jump) earned personal records while Emily Kirchman (discus) garnered a season best.

Logan Borths once again had success in his wheelchair events, taking first in the 100m and 400m and being bested by Marathon's Drake Carlson in the shot put and 1600m.

Algoma battles Luxemburg-Casco on baseball diamond

The Algoma Wolves will end their regular season with a Kewaunee County rivalry matchup when it heads west on State Highway 54 to battle Luxemburg-Casco.

The Wolves have won seven of their last nine, including a doubleheader sweep of Sevastopol to end last week. Their winning ways go even deeper than that as they have only lost four times since starting the season 1-4, winning the other 10 matchups and going undefeated in the non-conference play.

The Spartans have lost four of the last five and are currently below .500 on the season, but that does not tell the whole story in terms of how competitive they have been during their games. In one-run games, the Spartans are 2-7.

The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., almost two months after they game was originally scheduled.

Algoma softball ends War with sweep

The Algoma Wolves took two games from their southern rivals on Monday, nipping Kewaunee 5-4 before beating them 17-3 in game two.

In game one, the Wolves held a 1-0 lead on an RBI single before the Storm scored fourth the next half inning thanks to a three-run double by B Chevalier and RBI single by V Bootz. The Wolves would chip away the rest of the game until Jadyn Nells delivered the walk-off single in the seventh to take the game. Ryley Zimmerman, Robinson, and Nellis had one RBI each while Zimmerman, Sierra Slaby, Nora Krause, Hannah Nell, Teagen Luedke, Nellis and Robinson all had hits. Macie Zimmerman went the limit for the Wolves as she struck out 16 Storm players while allowing four runs on four hits. Jenna Rohr took the loss for the Storm as she struck out seven while allowing 10 hits and five runs (2 ER).

In game two, the Wolves piled on late as it was 2-2 going into the fifth before the Wolves scored four runs in that frame, five in the sixth, and six more in the seventh. Macie Zimmerman, Nellis, Robinson, and Kennedy Neuzil all had two RBI in the game while every player that got into the game for the Wolves got at least one of the team's 12 hits. Errors led to the Storm's three runs as they could only muster five hits against Nellis. E Todd led the way for the Storm with a 2-3 dat at the plate while three others got one hit. Lexi Hanrahan had to absorb much of the onslaught, giving up 11 runs in two innings against the Storm while Nell struck out eight while scattering five hits across seven innings.

Wolves baseball makes quick work of Hilbert/Stockbridge

The Algoma baseball team just needed five innings to get past Hilbert/Stockbridge, beating them 10-0 in five innings.

A five-run second inning was all the Wolves would need as they batted around, though Jack Cole was the only player that would drive in a run via hit as a collection bases-loaded walks, hit batsmen, and errors brought home the other runs in the frame.

An error would bring home the sixth run before J Fenendael stole home for the Wolves' seventh run. A balk and two errors brought home the Wolves' three other runs that ended the game early.

Cole had two hits while Fenendael and Braeden Leist each posted one hit. Leist and Parker Lischka combine to shut out Hilbert/Stockbridge on two hits while combining to strike out five players.

Wolves softball welcomes county rival Kewaunee

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Algoma's Luedke preparing for FBLA Nationals

Even after her softball season ends and her graduation on May 21st, Teagen Luedke will still be representing Algoma High School. Last month, Luedke qualified for the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference after taking third in the written test for health care administration at the state conference in Green Bay. While she admits her studying could have been a little better for the 100-question test, she credits her summer working at Door County Medical Center as being the most beneficial preparation she had for the competition. She was able to perform well despite being involved in several other activities, keeping her grades up in school, and leading the Algoma softball team to an over .500 record as an All-Packerland Conference performer. She credits sticking to a schedule for her success.

The FBLA National Leadership Conference will take place from June 27th through 30th in Atlanta. After her days at Algoma High School are officially behind her, Luedke will attend St. Norbert College where she will play softball and take pre-medical courses on her way to becoming an obstetrician.

Wolves baseball bedeviled by Oconto

The Algoma Wolves simply could not score enough runs to keep pace with the Oconto Blue Devils on Saturday, losing both ends of their doubleheader by the scores of 5-2 and 14-2.

In game one, the Wolves found themselves down 4-0 before Braden Leist singled home one run and doubled their total with a bases-loaded walk drawn by Aiden Jorns. Javen Charles took the loss for the Wolves on the mound, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits across five innings while striking out seven. Cooper Campsure and Kyle Bowman were thorns in Charles' side with each registering three hits.

In game two, the Blue Devils scored four runs in the second and fourth innings and three runs in the sixth and seventh to run past the Wolves 14-2. The Wolves were outhit 12-5 and added salt to their wounds with six errors in the contest. The bright spot came in the third inning when the Wolves rallied to score two runs on an RBI single by Parker Lischka and an RBI double by Carson Leist. It was Leist that took the bulk of the beating from the Blue Devils on the mound, giving up eight runs (four earned) on five hits across four innings.

Wolves baseball tack on late to sink Clippers

The Algoma Wolves boys baseball team needed nine runs after the fifth inning to escape its matchup against Sturgeon Bay 16-7 and 15-5 on Thursday.

GAME ONE

The Wolves scored the first six runs of the game only to find themselves tied up at seven apiece after five innings. They would go on to retake the lead and then some in the following inning when the Wolves would score on consecutive errors before Carson Lischka singled home a run. The Wolves would end the inning with another run thanks to another Clippers miscue. In the seventh inning, Parker Lischka, Jordan Fenendael, and Carson Lischka would drive in runs before an error brought home the final tally for the Wolves. The Lischkas combined for seven hits in their nine at-bats, driving home four runs in the process thanks in part to a homer by Carson Lischka. Vandevest, Fenendael, and Carson Leist had multi-hit games.  For the Clippers, Brody Kallath, Curt Meyer, Bryce Plzak, and Gavin Fernandez all had multi-hit games. Meyer did the most damage, registering one of the Clippers' two extra-base hits while driving in three runs. Danny Lodl drove in two runs as he went 1-2 on the day.

GAME TWO

The Wolves did not waste any time in this game as they scored six runs in the first inning and five more in the third inning to put the contest on ice in the fifth inning. Jack Cole, Braeden Leist, and Kaden Vardon all registered RBI hits for the Wolves in what proved to be a fatal inning for the Clippers. The Wolves' Carson Lischka would take on two more with an RBI double in the second inning. The game would get out of hand in the third inning with Leist clearing the bases with a double while Vardon and Aiden Jorns would add to their RBI totals. The Clippers would finally get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Emmett Braschnewitz would score on an error while Garrett Ulburg's RBI single and Cole Frangipane's two-RBI double would take larger bites out of the deficit. Meyer would hit an RBI single in the fifth, but a single run in the frame was not enough to prevent the mercy rule from going into effect.

Kirchman powers Algoma at home invite

Algoma's Emily Kirchman led the way once again for her team as the school's lone champion at its home invite.

Kirchman captured the shot put crown with a 34-and-a-half foot toss. Faith Gerdmann was right behind her in the shot put. Kirchman also took fourth place in the discus.

On the boys' side, an all-Kirchman relay took third place in the 4x800m relay, matching Aiden Moen's finish in the 110m hurdles.

Wolves baseball take down Blazers twice

The Algoma baseball team came from behind in its second game to sweep a doubleheader away from NEW Lutheran Monday afternoon.

In its 4-2 win opening game win, the Wolves found themselves down 2-0 in the first inning after the Blazers scored on an error and a single. That is how it would stay until the fourth inning when the Wolves took advantage of a pair of errors to tie the game Aiden Jorns delivered the eventual game-winning hit on an RBI single. Grant Vandervest's sacrifice fly drove home Carson Lischka to give the Wolves their final margin of victory. Carson Leist went the distance for the Wolves, give up three runs  (2 ER) across seven innings while striking out eight.

The Wolves scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to steal the second game 7-4. After Vandervest scored the game's opening run on a wild pitch, the Wolves found themselves down early again after the Blazers scored twice on an error. Kaden Vardon would even the score in the next inning with a double to drive home Leist. The two teams would trade scores to make it 3-3 heading into the top of the seventh inning. The Wolves rallied with RBi hits from Parker Lischka and J Fenendael and free passes earned by Carson Lischka and Aiden Jorns.  The Wolves allowed a Blazers player to get on via an error before retiring the final two batters.

Algoma softball looks to match baseball's success against NEW Lutheran

The Algoma softball team hopes they can sweep NEW Lutheran just like their baseball team did when they host the Blazers Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolves were able to beat Oconto 14-2 in their one recorded game of Monday's planned doubleheader. That bumped their record to 7-4 on the year and places them in the middle of the Packerland standings with a 4-3 mark.

NEW Lutheran managed just one hit in their two games against Sevastopol on Monday, losing those games 11-0 and 15-0.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Algoma baseball greets NEW Lutheran in Perry Park

Algoma and NEW Lutheran's baseball teams were so anxious to play, they moved their doubleheader up a day to Monday afternoon at Perry Park beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The Wolves were one of the few teams that got to play on Tuesday, losing both ends of a doubleheader to Kewaunee 14-0 and 13-3. In game one, Kaden Vardon and Braeden Leist were the only ones to get on base via a hit against Storm pitchers, two of which only came after Cal Ihenfeldt ended his day an inning short in the five-inning game but exited with six strikeouts. The Wolves were able to score in the second game, opening the contest with an RBI groundout. After giving up eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Wolves were able to delay the inevitable five-inning loss thanks to a run scored on a wild pitch and another on an RBI single by Carson Leist. The Storm ended the contest with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jack Cole posted two hits in the loss.

The Blazers saw their losing streak stretch to six on Saturday with a pair of losses to Oconto by scores of 11-1 and 6-4. Their lone win in Packerland play came in early April in the second game of a doubleheader against Peshtigo.

Algoma tries Oconto doubleheader again Monday

The Algoma Wolves look to snap a three-game losing streak on the softball diamond when they try to play their doubleheader at Oconto Monday afternoon.

The Wolves last played on April 28th when they lost to Luxemburg-Casco 5-0. Hannah Nell gave up all five runs in the first inning, but she and Macie Zimmerman were able to keep the Spartans in check after that. Kirchmans lead Algoma track teams at Seymour

Put a Kirchman in the circle and good things are bound to happen for the Algoma track teams.

Zach Kirchman threw a personal best in the discus and Emily Kirchman threw a season record in the discus to take second place in those respective events. They also each took home a top-5 finish in the shot put.

For the boys, Cole Younk threw a personal best in the shot put to take third overall while Aiden Moen did the same in the 300m hurdles to take fifth.

On the girls side, Emily Strandell took third in the pole vault and Faith Gerdmann provided a nice 1-2 punch behind Kirchman in the throwing events.

Algoma softball takes diamond against Oconto

The Algoma Wolves look to snap a three-game losing streak on the softball diamond when they play at Oconto for a doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The Wolves last played on April 28th when they lost to Luxemburg-Casco 5-0. Hannah Nell gave up all five runs in the first inning, but she and Macie Zimmerman were able to keep the Spartans in check after that. Ryley Zimmerman, Macie Zimmerman, Amelia Robinson, and Nora Krause all registered hits in the shutout loss.

The Blue Devils swept their pair of games against NEW Lutheran last Saturday in 15-7 and 8-1 blowouts.

First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

Wolves baseball looks to down Blue Devils

The Algoma Wolves baseball team hopes to find their groove again when they play an early doubleheader at Oconto on Friday.

The Blue Devils improved to 8-3 on the season last Saturday when they swept a doubleheader from NEW Lutheran.

Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.

Wolves baseball hosts "War on the Shore" against Kewaunee

The Algoma Wolves baseball team will take on the Kewaunee Storm in a doubleheader in this year's baseball edition of the “War on the Shore.”

The Algoma Wolves baseball team was scheduled to take on Sturgeon Bay on Saturday, but rainy weather conditions spoiled that doubleheader matchup. Algoma took down Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah last Friday, winning 9-3 over the Resorters. The Wolves remain at .500, posting a 4-4 record overall and a 2-4 record in Packerland play.

Kewaunee has continued to roll after their fast start to the season, as they enter the doubleheader at 11-2 overall and 8-0 in the Packerland Conference. The Storm are fresh off of a doubleheader sweep of the Sevastopol Pioneers, winning 11-0 and 13-2 in their two games played.

First pitch of game one from Algoma is set for 4:30 p.m.
