Algoma cross country debuts new member at Pioneer Invite

The Algoma cross country team had someone competing in both the boys and girls races for the first time this season at Thursday's Pioneer Invite hosted at Cherry Hills Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay.

 

Cooper Fay made his Wolves' debut for the boys, breaking 24 minutes on the 5K course to finish in 32nd. Emily Reif was the lone girl for Algoma, finishing at 32:25.

Algoma football hosts Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran for homecoming tilt

The Algoma Wolves will have the homecoming mojo going when they welcome Oneida Nation/NEW Lutheran/Providence Academy to Perry Field for Peninsula Conference football.

 

Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas showed why they are ranked in the state with a 48-20 win over the Wolves last week. Joey Cabino, Grant Vandervest, and Parker Lischka all scored touchdowns as the Wolves piled up 333 rushing yards in the loss. Neither team threw the ball much with Vandervest throwing the only seven passes seen all night, completing three of them for 30 yards

 

The United's Bryce Liebzeit ran for 144 yards and a score and Reid Nelson threw 169 yards and a touchdown in their 35-14 win over Suring last week. The team is 4-1 on the season, taking their lone lump from the Titans last week.

 

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Wolves volleyball tops Giblartar

The Algoma Wolves captured a Packerland Conference match against the Gibraltar Vikings in Fish Creek Tuesday night.  The Wolves dropped set two but came away with a 3-1 victory with scores of 25-19, 17-25, 25-16, 25-22.  Leading the way for the Wolves were MyLee Jones with 19 Kills, three aces, and 18 Digs; Rylee Zimmerman with 16 kills and 28 digs; Hannah Nell with 35 assists and two aces; and Dallas Thompson with 5 aces and six digs.   Olivia Cabino added 26 digs and 29 receptions.

 

Algoma stays perfect 4-0 in the conference and is 10-6 overall. The Wolves will next host Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday, October 3. 

Algoma football can't keep up with Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas

What was a two-point game at the end of one quarter turned into a rout against the Algoma Wolves as they lost to state-ranked Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas 48-20.

 

The Wolves were down 16-14 after the first quarter, but 16 unanswered points in the second quarter sent Algoma to their second loss of the season. The defense simply could not stop the Titans' rushing attack, led by 254 yards by Calvin Peters on just 10 attempts. The Titans racked up over 400 yards rushing on the night to improve to 5-0 on the year.

Algoma volleyball host eight-team tournament Saturday

Algoma will host their tournament on Saturday, welcoming Bonduel, Crivitz, Denmark, Green Bay East, Reedsville, Shiocton, and Two Rivers to town for a 9 a.m. opening serve.

 

The Wolves will specifically open their day against Two Rivers at 9 a.m., followed by Denmark in the second round and Crivitz in the third round.

 

The Algoma Wolves volleyball team needed the minimum to get past their lakeshore rivals, beating Kewaunee 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-13). Rylee Zimmerman led the way with 12 Kills, 12 Digs, and 3 Aces. MyLee Jones provided support offensively with 11 Kills, 14 Digs, and 3 Aces. Hannah Nell did a good job distributing the ball, collecting 27 Assists. 3 Kills, and 2 Aces. Olivia Cabino (9 Digs, 14 Receptions) and Chloe Robertson (4 Kills, 5 Digs, 1 Ace) also contributed to the win.

The Algoma cross country team continued to improve at Mishicot's Bremser Invitational.

 

Estella Marrero and Emily Reif each set personal bests on the 5K course in a crowded field while Vivika Meverden set a season record.

Wolves soccer battles Kewaunee, travels to Howards Grove/Elkhart Lake

No results were shared from Thursday's Algoma/Kewaunee soccer match., but the Wolves are back in action on Friday as they travel to play Howards Grove at 7 p.m.

 

The Wolves are still clinging to a 3-2 win against Mayville for their only victory on the year. They are 0-7 in their other matches, getting outscored 32-1 in the process while being shutout in six of them.

 

Howards Grove/ELG has dropped three straight matches after opening the season with five consecutive wins. The offense has dried up for them as they have been held scoreless during the skid.

 

Wolves volleyball sweeps up Storm

Algoma football takes on Lena/St. Thomas Academy

After toppling one tough opponent last weekend, the Algoma football will try to duplicate that success again Friday night against state-ranked Lena/St. Thomas Academy.

 

Last week, the Wolves blitzed the Gillett Tigers 54-37 in Peninsula Conference football at Perry Field. Algoma quarterback Grant Vandervest ran for four touchdowns and returned a kick-off 90 yards for another score to pace the Wolves. Vandervest made the "play of the game" with a spectacular 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to close out the scoring for Algoma with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter. Gillett (3-1) and Wolves emptied the benches and the Tigers scored two times in the final seven minutes to make the score closer than the final scoreboard as Algoma was never challenged for most of the evening.

 

The Titans throttled Suring last week 57-0 to improve to 4-0 on the season with two shutouts. Calvin Peters rushed for 131 yards and three touchdowns and threw another long score in the rout that also saw Tyler Shallow rush for over 100 yards.

 

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Lena High School.

 

Algoma volleyball wars against Kewaunee

The Algoma Wolves volleyball team will not have a lack of motivation on Thursday night when they play against Kewaunee.

 

The Wolves have had their fair share of drama in their last five matches, playing an extra set in all of them and going the distance in three of them. Last weekend, they lost matches to Hilbert and Valley Christian by identical 2-1 scores.

 

The Storm snapped a season-long seven-match losing streak last Thursday with a 3-0 sweep of Gibraltar. Baleigh Saxby spoke to her classmates on the Kewaunee Student Broadcast about the importance of picking up a conference win.

 

First serve is set for 7 p.m.

 

Algoma soccer hosts rivalry match against Kewaunee

The Algoma soccer team brings the war on the shore to the pitch Thursday afternoon when they welcome Kewaunee for a 4:30 p.m. match.

 

The Storm has been held scoreless in their last three matches following a 4-2 win over Washington Island, being outscored 7-0 in the process. That includes a 3-0 loss to tournament host Wrightstown and a 1-0 defeat to Altoona/Fall Creek.

Algoma, Gibraltar head to Hilbert volleyball Invitational

Algoma and Gibraltar will travel to Hilbert on Saturday for a tournament starting at 8 a.m. Central Wisconsin Christian, Manitowoc Lutheran, Roncalli, Valley Christian, and Wittenberg-Birnamwood are also scheduled to compete.

 

Earlier this week, a see-saw affair went in favor of the Algoma Wolves volleyball team Thursday night, beating NEW Lutheran 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12). The Wolves were strong from the service line as they registered 14 on the evening, led by Ryley Zimmerman (14 kills, 6 aces, 13 digs, 27 Receptions) and Hannah Nell (27 assists, 5 Aces, 2 Kills). MyLee Jones led the Wolves in digs (13 Kills, 2 Aces, 13 digs, 8 receptions) while Olivia Cabino had a great all-around performance (11 Digs, 1 Aces, 15 receptions) to help the team earn the Packerland Conference victory.

 

The Vikings were swept by Kewaunee on Thursday, their second straight Packerland Conference. Outside of a 2-0 win over Goodman/Pembine at a tournament in Crivitz, the Vikings have only won two other sets all season.

Algoma runs over Gillett on 104.1 WRLU

The Algoma Wolves blitzed the Gillett Tigers 54-37 Friday night in Peninsula Conference football at Perry Field.

 

Algoma quarterback Grant Vandervest ran for four touchdowns and returned a kick-off 90 yards for another score to pace the Wolves. 

 

In the home opener for Algoma, Parker Lischka started the scoring with an electrifying 51-yard run with 9:59 left in the first quarter.  Gillett would respond with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jesse DeBauch to Nathan Rowell and the score was tied at 8-8.

 

Algoma would get a 46-yard touchdown run by Vandervest to make it 16-8 after one quarter.

 

After a turnover by Gillett, Algoma would score on a 36-yard scamper by Lischka, and the two-point conversion would make it 24-8 with 6:42 left in the half.

Algoma would dodge a bullet when Joey Cavino got his second interception of the half on a tipped pass at the goal line, preventing a Tiger score.

The Wolves carried the momentum into the second half with a 26-yard run by Lischka and a 31-yard scramble for a score by Vandervest making the score 40-8.

 

Vandervest made the "play of the game" with a spectacular 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to close out the scoring for Algoma with 10:54 left in the fourth quarter.

 

Gillett (3-1) and Wolves emptied the benches and the Tigers scored two times in the final seven minutes to make the score closer than the final scoreboard as Algoma was never challenged for most of the evening.

 

Algoma (2-1) will now play Lena next Friday.

Algoma soccer battles Washington Island at home

The Algoma Wolves will look to break their hard-luck streak to start the season when Washington Island makes the trip south.

 

A 3-2 victory against Mayville remains the Wolves' only win on the season and the only three goals the team has scored all year.

 

The Bucks' last matchup against a Packerland school saw them lose 4-2 to Kewaunee. They hosted Stockbridge last week.

A see-saw affair went in favor of the Algoma Wolves volleyball team Thursday night, beating NEW Lutheran 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12).

Wolves football takes on Gillett Friday on 104.1 WRLU

The Algoma Wolves will host the Gillett Tigers in Peninsula Conference football Friday night.

 

The Wolves (1-1) are coming off a heartbreaking 53-50 overtime loss to Gibraltar in Fish Creek last week, while Gillett (3-0) upended Suring at home 36-28 at home.

 

Algoma quarterback Grant Vandervest threw for two touchdowns and rushed for three more as he accounted for 350 total yards on offense with 248 yards on the ground and passing for 102 yards.

 

Gillett has a dual threat at quarterback as well, as Jesse DeBauch has thrown for 821 yards and eight touchdowns, while being the leading rusher for the Tigers with 225 yards and six scores.

 

The pregame is set for 6:45 pm on 104.1 WRLU and kick-off set for 7 p.m. from Perry Field.  Paul Schmitt and Henry Annen will have the play-by-play of the game that will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network.

Algoma volleyball looks to sweep Green Bay matches at NEW Lutheran

Titletown has been Wins-ville for Algoma in the first full month of the volleyball season ahead of their match at NEW Lutheran.

 

After sweeping Green Bay West earlier in the season, the Wolves took three of four sets from Green Bay East on Tuesday. After losing the first set 21-25, the Wolves responded with convincing wins of 25-5, 25-19, and 25-13 to win the match. MyLee Jones had 13 kills, six aces, 15 digs, and 11 receptions to lead the Wolves.  Ryley Zimmerman scored eight kills, 11 aces, 13 digs and 14 receptions.  Hannah Nell had a strong floor game with two kills and 27 assists.  Olivia Cabino chipped in three aces, seven digs, and seven receptions and Chloe Robinson had ten digs, three aces, and one kill to round out the scoring for Algoma.

 

The Blazers may be a tougher team to slay than their fellow Green Bay counterparts. They swept Gibraltar 3-0 last Thursday before splitting their four matches at the Ashwaubenon Invite.

 

First serve is 7 p.m.

Personal records for Algoma runners at Crusader Challenge

The Algoma girls cross country team continues to improve in every race they do, this time at the Sheboygan Area Lutheran Crusader Invitational.

 

Both Estella Marrero and Emily Reif secured personal best times with their performances on Tuesday.

Wolves volleyball tops Green Bay East

The Algoma Wolves came away with a three-games-to-one victory over the Green Bay East Red Devils on Tuesday evening on the road.

 

After losing the first set 21-25, the Wolves responded with convincing wins of 25-5, 25-19, and 25-13 to win the match.

 

MyLee Jones had 13 kills, six aces, 15 digs, and 11 receptions to lead the Wolves.  Ryley Zimmerman scored eight kills, 11 aces, 13 digs and 14 receptions.  Hannah Nell had a strong floor game with two kills and 27 assists.  Olivia Cabino chipped in three aces, seven digs, and seven receptions and Chloe Robinson had ten digs, three aces, and one kill to round out the scoring for Algoma.

Algoma soccer shut out by NEW Lutheran

The Algoma Wolves could not get their offense going Monday night, getting shut out by NEW Lutheran 6-0.

 

The Wolves will host Washington Island at 4:30 p.m. on Friday for their next match. 

Wolves volleyball runs with the Red Devils Tuesday

After conquering one side of the river last week, the Algoma volleyball team will try to do the same things Tuesday night when they face Green Bay East at 7 p.m.

 

The Algoma Wolves were able to rebound from a dropped third set to capture the match from Oconto 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 25-18, 25-19) in front of its home crowd Thursday night. The Wolves were led by Ryley Zimmerman (5 Kills, 12 Digs, 12 receptions) and MyLee Jones (13 Kills, 10 Digs, 12 receptions) with double figures in three statistical categories. Hannah Nell distributed the ball well with 31 assists and Olivia Cabino was a stalwart on defense with 11 digs and 20 receptions. THey were also able to beat Green Bay West in straight sets last week.

 

The Red Devils are winless in four tries so far this season, running into the buzz saw that is defending state champion Xavier losing in straight sets 25-6, 25-5, 25-10. 

 

The first serve from Green Bay East is set for 7 p.m.

Wolves soccer sees game moved up against NEW Lutheran

The Algoma Wolves saw their game later this week moved to Monday when they face NEW Lutheran at home beginning at 4:30 p.m.

 

It wasn't for a lack of trying that led the Wolves to a 2-0 soccer defeat at the Wautoma Tournament against Amherst. The Wolves peppered Amherst goalkeeper Alex Martin with five shots on goal, all of which were saved and kept out of the goal mouth. Carlos Lopez and Milo Graham delivered the fatal blows against Algoma for Amherst.

 

The Blazers are coming off a tough week where they were shut out twice and gave up a combined nine goals in matches against Sturgeon Bay (6-0) and St. Mary Catholic (3-0).

Algoma soccer falls to Amherst

It wasn't for a lack of trying that led the Algoma Wolves to a 2-0 soccer defeat at the Wautoma Tournament against Amherst.

 

The Wolves peppered Amherst goalkeeper Alex Martin with five shots on goal, all of which were saved and kept out of the goal mouth. Carlos Lopez and Milo Graham delivered the fatal blows against Algoma for Amherst.

Algoma soccer to play in Wautoma Tournament

The Algoma soccer team will start its tournament run bright and early on Saturday when they head to Wautoma for a tournament.

 

No score was posted from Thursday's scheduled matchup against Peshtigo, but before that, they were still searching for their first goal and win of the season as they started 0-3.

 

Amherst, Berlin, Green Bay Preble, Lomira, Mayville,  and Nekoosa are also scheduled to play in the tournament that begins at 8 a.m.

The Algoma volleyball team looks to follow up its big win earlier this week with a Packerland Conference match at home against Oconto.

 

The visiting Wolves took the match against Green Bay West with wins of 25-11, 25-6, and 25-8.  Hannah Nell led Algoma with seven aces, 14 assists, and four digs.  Chloe Robertson served up six aces and had two kills, while MyLee Jones contributed eight kills, five aces, and three digs.

 

The Blue Devils look to rebound from tough go at the Beast of the Northeast Invite when they went 1-5 after splitting their first four matches to the start the season. That lone tournament victory came against Green Bay Preble in a two-set sweep.

 

Match time is set for 7 p.m.

Wolves soccer travel for dog fight against Bulldogs

The Algoma soccer team makes the trip north on Thursday for a Packerland Conference match against Peshtigo.

 

The Wolves are looking for their first goal of the season after being shut out in its first three matches, including an 8-0 drubbing at the hands of Sturgeon Bay last week.

 

A single goal against NEW Lutheran is the lone bright spot for the Bulldogs, who are also winless on the season. 

 

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.

Wolves' volleyball sweeps Green Bay West

The Algoma Wolves took three straight games and swept the Green Bay West Wildcats on Tuesday night in non-conference volleyball.  The visiting Wolves took the match with wins of 25-11, 25-6, and 25-8.  Hannah Nell led Algoma with seven aces, 14 assists, and four digs.  Chloe Robertson served up six aces and had two kills, while

MyLee Jones contributed eight kills, five aces, and three digs.

Other contributors included Ryley Zimmerman with five kills, Therese Gerdmann with four kills, and Olivia Cabino with nine digs and 2 aces.  

Wolves, Wildcats battle on volleyball court

The Algoma volleyball team hits the road Tuesday night for a non-conference matchup against Green Bay West.

 

The Wolves are looking to earn their first victory of the season after being swept at the Reedsville Invite and losing 3-1 to West De Pere in their last match.

 

The Wildcats are also 0-3 to start the 2023 campaign, but they will be playing their first Best-of-Five match of the season against the Wolves. They lost all three of their matches at the Omro/Wilmot Invite two weekends ago.

 

The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m. at Green Bay West.

Algoma soccer sails to Marinette

The Algoma soccer team looks for its first win of the season when they travel to Marinette on Tuesday.

 

The Wolves are looking for not just their first win but their first goal of the season after three losses to Gibraltar/Sevastopol (5-0), Luxemburg-Casco (2-0), and Sturgeon Bay (8-0). It is a team that finished in the top third of the Packerland Conference table a year ago.

 

The Marines are 1-0-1 on the year, earning a 1-1 draw against Freedom before posting a 2-0 clean sheet against Peshtigo. 

 

Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.

Algoma hosts cross country meet Tuesday

The Algoma cross-country team will take the hosting duties on Tuesday for its annual meet at Peterson Park.

 

Crivitz, Denmark, Kewaunee, Lena, NEWCHAA (Northeast Wisconsin Christian Homeschoolers Athletic Associaton), Oconto, Oneida Nation, Providence Academy/NEW Lutheran, Reedsville, Sevastopol, Southern Door, St. John-Bosco
Sturgeon Bay and Wolf River Lutheran are all scheduled to participate when they first race starts at 4:30 p.m.
