Algoma football gets Week Nine shutout

Algoma High School's football team ended the year with a familiar result Friday night, another shutout. The Wolves defeated Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 32-0 to finish the season with eight wins to just one loss. Algoma High School's enrollment is too big to qualify for the eight-player football postseason but the Wolves rank in the top 5 in the state according to multiple polls.

Algoma football wraps up season on road

Algoma High School's football team ends their first eight-player season on the road Friday night at Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah. Elkhart Lake enters the contest 4-4 and features a unique mascot. It may be the only time in program history that the Algoma Wolves have had to take on a team calling themselves the Resorters. As their record would suggest, it has been an up-and-down season for Elkhart Lake but they have strung together three consecutive wins at one point. The Resorters boast an upset win over Oakfield, a state-ranked team at the time. They also played Newman Catholic tough, losing 28-14.

Algoma's only loss was to Newman Catholic and have rolled since. Last week at St. Mary Catholic the Wolves gave up the first score of the game and followed it up with 54 unanswered. At 7-1, it has been a very successful transition to eight-player football for the Wolves.

Algoma football looks to finish season strong

Algoma High School's football team is now 6-1 on the season and winners of four straight, but Head Coach Wade Vandervest says it is too soon to proclaim the program's first eight-player football season a success.

Algoma is not facing the same level of competition its last two games that it saw for homecoming against Gibraltar. The Vikings were state-ranked before being manhandled by Algoma last week. The Wolves ran for over 420 yards averaging almost 10 yards per carry as a team. The St. Mary's Zephyrs enter Friday's contest at 1-5 and next weekend's opponent, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, is 3-3.

Algoma runs past Gibraltar on 105.1 The Viking

Algoma's power running game proved to be too much for Gibraltar as the Wolves topped the Vikings 46-22 on 105.1 The Viking.

The two teams traded turnovers at the game's outset, but it was the Wolves that capitalized first when Brett Benesh followed his interception of Luke Steebs's first interception with a touchdown run. Steebs' second interception proved to be even more costly when Carter Zimmerman took a tipped pass for six to make 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. After Zimmerman scored a touchdown on the offensive side of the ball, the Vikings' Alex Laughlin scored on a 65-yard kickoff return. Jordan Deringer capped the first half scoring with a touchdown from 50-plus yards out to make it 30-6 at the break. Zimmerman and Deringer would each score a touchdown to start off the third quarter before the Vikings scored a pair of touchdowns on a Steebs scramble and a pass to Brandon Stillman.

Algoma football gears up for marquee matchup

Not only is it homecoming at Algoma High School, it's a premiere football matchup against another ranked team in eight-player football. The anticipation is palpable for the Algoma Wolves-Gibraltar Vikings tilt Friday night. Head Coach Wade Vandervest says he knows his team will answer the bell at the start of the first quarter. The question is if the team can put together a consistent 48-minute effort. In recent weeks, games have been decided by halftime so a more competitive matchup could pose problems.

The pregame starts at 6:30 with kickoff at 7 PM on 105.1 The Viking. You can also stream the game on this website using the banner at the top of the page.
