Algoma High School Archives for 2020-06

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1986 Algoma Girls' Basketball

The Algoma girl's basketball team struck gold again in 1986, capturing the school's second state title in five years.

Playing Division C at the time, the Wolves beat Prentice 67-56 in the semifinal before escaping Madison with the gold ball in hand after narrowly defeating defending state champion Fall Creek 49-48. That happened during a time period when Fall Creek won four state titles in six years. It also came a year after Algoma came up just short in the state title game.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 2013 Algoma Girls' Basketball

The Algoma girls' basketball team from 2013 were not about to be outdone by their neighbors to the south.

Led by all-conference performers in Taylor Schmidt (who was also the player of the year), Anna Dier, McKenzie Mueller, Meg Ryan, and Kennedy Blahnik, the Wolves won the third state championship in their program's history a year after coming up just short two years before. The Wolves lost only twice all season long: DePere and eventual state champion Kewaunee. Taylor Schmidt led the Wolves and the Packerland Conference in scoring while also among the team's leaders in rebounds and assists. Schmidt was able to let her teammates shine in the state tournament. In a 62-39 win over previously undefeated Cuba City, Anna Dier scored 18 points while Schmidt and Kennedy Blahnik each chipped in 13 points. In its state championship win, Schmidt was held to single digits but Blahnik scored 17 and Baleigh Delorit chipped in nine last the Wolves beat Colfax 46-30. The state championship was a highlight in a series of tournament runs between 2011 and 2014.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1981 Algoma Girls' Basketball

There are only a few teams in the state when it comes to making the final tournament of the year than Algoma, and it all started in 1981.

That year, the Wolves won the state title with consecutive wins against St. Francis (34-31) and Nortland Pines (60-44).  Key to win the state title was Midge Schinderle, who has one of the top rebounding performances in tournament history. She collected 24 rebounds during the two-game span, good for 16th all-time.
