Errors sink Wolves vs. Hornets on baseball diamond

The Algoma Wolves' baseball team could not overcome five errors in its 10-3 opening-day loss to the Green Bay Preble Hornets on Thursday at Capital Credit Union Park.

The Hornets were leading 4-0 before the Wolves scored twice in the third inning to a pair of RBI groundouts by Braeden Leist and Chase Romdenne. After the Hornets answered with a tally in the bottom half of the third inning, the Wolves got that run back in the fifth when Leist doubled home Jack Cole. The Wolves' comeback hopes were shelved in the sixth inning when the Hornets scored five runs.

Charlie Prokash took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) across 3 1/3 innings in relief of Carson Leist, who gave up four runs (one earned). Prokash did strike out seven in his appearance. Braeden Leist, Aiden Jorns, and Jack Cole recorded the only hits, with Leist (two RBI) and Romdenne (one RBI) driving in runs.

Algoma baseball iced out in Brillion, set to play Preble Thursday

The Algoma Wolves baseball team will try to get their season underway again on Thursday when they travel to Capital Credit Union Park in Ashwaubenon to face Green Bay Preble.

The Wolves had already rescheduled their matchup against Brillion once this week before they were forced to postpone it again on Wednesday due to icy field conditions on the Tigers' field. The game has not been rescheduled.

The Wolves finished in the middle of the pack of the Packerland last year with an 8-8 mark in the conference and 12-10 mark overall. They were shut out in their WIAA Regional matchup against Iola-Scandinavia 8-0 to end their season last year. Jeff DeMeuse will welcome back All-Packerland performers Carson Leist, Aiden Jorns, Grant Vandervest, and Braeden Leist to the squad.

The Hornets finished in the bottom third of the Fox River Classic Conference, going 6-12 in the FRCC and 9-15 overall. They lost to Appleton North 11-1 in the WIAA Regional last year to bring their season to a close. Ian Johnson was the Hornets' only All-Conference selection and he graduated last year.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Algoma's field events shine at indoor track meet

The Algoma track team let its field events take center stage at Monday's indoor track meet in Oconto Falls.

Faith Gerdmann set a new season-best for the girls to win the shotput event for the Wolves. Estella Marrero nearly did the same in pole vault as she set a new personal record.

Marrero's fellow pole vaulter Brennan Buckman pulled off the same feat, taking second place with a new personal record of nine feet.

Wolves dominate Reedsville in softball opener

Algoma opened its 2024 softball season with a five-inning, 11-1 non-conference win over Reedsville on a cold, overcast, and windy day at Peterson Park Tuesday.

Algoma Sophomore pitcher Macie Zimmerman faced just 18 batters and threw a one-hitter, striking out 14 while walking three. She threw 83 pitches, 53 of them strikes. The Wolves were sure-handed in the field, with no errors.

Algoma tallied seven hits, including a two-RBI, inside-the-park home run by senior Ryley Zimmerman in the second inning. Hannah Nell, Jadyn Nellis, Megan Zimmer and Natalie Ray all doubled, and Nora Krause and Brooke Mattson each singled. Nellis had four RBI, Krause crossed the plate three times and Nell and Ray scored twice. Sierra Slaby, Macie Zimmerman, and Krause each walked once. Slaby stole two bases, and Mattson one.

Junior pitcher Kayla Bubolz had the Panthers' only hit, a solo home run in the top of the third. She also stole two bases. Bubolz gave up seven hits and walked three. Six of the 11 runs were earned. Reedsville committed four errors. Bubolz faced 25 batters and threw 55 strikes among her 92 pitches.

Next up, the Wolves are scheduled to play a doubleheader at Southern Door on April 5.

Algoma softball season kicks off season vs. Reedsville

The Algoma Wolves start the road to a second straight regional title with hopes to accomplish more this spring when they host Reedsville on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolves were just an out away from clinching a spot in the state tournament before eventually falling to Iola-Scandinavia 3-2. The team returns Macie Zimmerman, one of just four freshmen named to an All-State team encompassing Division 4 and 5 players. They also return all but three players from last year's regional title-winning team.

The Panthers were 6-10 last year but were nipped 2-1 by St. Mary Catholic in the regional final, preventing them from securing their spot in sectionals. Josee Bussee led the Panthers with a .516 batting average and 14 runs batted in.

The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Algoma. There will be no JV1 game.

Wolves track competes for second straight day

Aiden Moen (60m hurdles), the 4x200m relay, Brennan Buckman (pole vault), Wyatt Fay (pole vault), Vivika Meverden (high jump) and Emily Reif (triple jump) also finished in the top five.
