Algoma High School Archives for 2020-10

Algoma says no to WIAA postseason

You will see them on the field competing, but you will not see any of Algoma's sports teams compete in WIAA postseason events.

Algoma Athletic Director David Robertson said in an email that the school has opted out of WIAA events this fall due to COVID-19. The school's soccer team has been competing this fall, including a recent 2-1 loss to Peshtigo. Its cross country team and football teams never got going this fall, but Robertson says as of now the volleyball team is the only one committed to playing during the alternate fall season. That team should have plenty of matches as all Packerland schools in Door and Kewaunee counties opted for the alternate fall season for their volleyball squads.

The soccer team's games against Sheboygan Falls on Thursday and Kiel on Friday have been canceled, but they are scheduled to play NEW Lutheran on Saturday beginning at 2 p.m.

Alternate spring season filling up with local teams

If teams are able to be filled this February, there will be plenty of local schools involved in the alternate spring season.

Last Saturday was the deadline for teams to apply for the alternate fall season which was created for schools who could not play at least 50 percent of their schedule by this point or did not allow for athletics at this time. Luxemburg-Casco is the only school that will not have a team participate in the alternate fall season. Some teams like Sevastopol football, Algoma soccer, and Southern Door volleyball were able to start their seasons but opted to switch later. Due to virtual learning, Gibraltar did not have a team compete at all this fall. Below is a listing of the teams that are holding off until the alternate fall season if they are able to field a roster.
