Wolves baseball upsets Indians in regional final

The Algoma Wolves registered an upset of top-seeded Mishicot on Thursday with a 2-0 win for the first regional championship in 15 years.

Carson Leist made sure the Indians couldn't do anything offensively, limiting the Indians to just two hits across seven innings while striking out seven. The Wolves meanwhile banged out seven hits and benefited from two errors, but only managed single tallies in the fourth and sixth innings.

In the fourth, Parker Lischka kicked off the inning with a triple and was later driven in on an RBI single by Charlie Prokash. With two men on in the sixth inning, Cayden Neuzil grounded a ball up the middle to drive in Prokash, who was able to advance because of an Indians error.

Both Leist brothers and Jordan Fenendael also had hits in the game.

The Wolves will travel to Gillett for Tuesday's sectional semifinal to face St. Mary Catholic. The latter nipped Kewaunee in the second round en route to their own regional championship. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. and will be carried on 104.1 WRLU.

Late rally sends Wolves baseball to regional championship

A three-run seventh inning helped the Algoma Wolves get past the Brillion Lions 7-5 on Wednesday, earning them a date with top-seeded Mishicot on Thursday.

The Wolves scored two runs in the first inning thanks to RBI singles by Chase Romdenne and Charlie Prokash, only to see the lead disappear in the third inning when the Lions scored four times to make it 4-2. The two teams would trade single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 5-4 heading into the final frame. Prokash would lead the Wolves with a two-run single that brought home Grant Vandervest and Braeden Leist before a series of errors led to them tacking on an insurance run.  With the tying run on first base, Carson Leist induced a ground ball out to help the Wolves advance to Thursday's regional title game.

Vandervest, Prokash, and Braeden Leist all had two hits, while Prokash was credited with three RBI. Carson Leist earned the win, allowing no runs on two hits with a strike out across the final 1 2/3 innings of play.

The Wolves will have to go on the road again on Thursday to clinch their trip to Gillett for the sectional round. They will visit top-seeded Mishicot for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch. The winner will face St. Mary Catholic in the sectional semi-final.

Wolves lose to Random Lake in Sectional semi-finals

The Algoma Wolves could not stop a hard-hitting Random Lake Rams’ offense on Tuesday, falling 9-5 at home in a Division 4 Sectional semi-final.

The Rams exploded for five runs in the last two innings to pull away from a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning to advance in the tournament.

Macie Zimmerman went the distance for the Wolves allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs while striking out 14 batters.  She went 4 for 4 at the plate with a homer and double to lead the Wolves offense.  Brooke Matton, Ryley Zimmerman, Hannah Nell, and Sierra Slaby all had one hit each.

Algoma finishes the season 23-4 and champions of the Packerland Conference.

Random Lake will advance to the Sectional final with a chance to go to state when they play Coleman in Crivitz on Thursday afternoon.

Algoma softball hosts Random Lake for sectional showdown

The area's last hope on the softball diamond will play in front of its home crowd on Tuesday when Algoma hosts Random Lake for the WIAA Sectional Semi-final.

The Wolves capitalized on an error in the fifth inning to comeback and beat the St. Mary's Springs Ledgers 2-1 in the Division 4 Regional championship last Thursday at Peterson Park. The Wolves took the lead when Jayden Nellis scored from second base on a ground ball throw that was dropped at first base for an error with two outs. Macie Zimmerman took over from there for the Wolves, retiring the final eight batters and striking out the side in the seventh to end the game.

The Rams won their regional with a 13-0 beating of Manitowoc Lutheran last Tuesday before sneaking past St. Mary Catholic 3-2 last Thursday. Single tallies in the first, second, and third innings were all the Rams could muster, and cut a two-run rally in the fourth by the Zephyrs to avert the early tournament exit.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Wolves baseball advances with win over Indians

The Algoma Wolves' season will continue thanks to a 7-3 win over Weyauwega-Fremont in Thursday's opening round of the WIAA Baseball Tournament.

Algoma got on the board early with two runs in the first with a 2 RBI single by Jordan Fenendael. In the 2nd, Chase Romdenne got on an error, stole 2nd, and Carson Leist singled to left, scoring Romdenne. The Warhawks scratched across 1 in the third on an unearned run.

Algoma countered with 3 in the 3rd. Braeden Leist singled to lead off the bottom of the 4th, stole 2nd, and advanced to third on an error. Fenendael's hard-hit ball scored Leist from third. Algoma would load the bases, scoring two on a walk and a past ball. Grant Vandervest finished the scoring by drawing a bases-loaded walk, scoring Fenendael.

Prokash struck out the side on the 4th, 3 of his ten on the day

The bottom of the fourth was similar to the third. Braeden Leist singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a play. Fenendael struck out swinging, but the passed ball scored Leist from third. The team was leading 7-1 after 5.

W-F would add single tallies in the 6th and 7th but a strikeout looking by pinch hitter Jason Hansen with the bases loaded in the top of the 7th, securing the win for the Wolves.

Algoma advances to play the 5th-seeded Brillion Lions, who advanced by beating 13th-seeded Manawa 12-2 on Tuesday in Brillion.

Wolves edge St. Mary

The #1 Algoma Wolves capitalized on an error in the fifth inning to comeback and beat the #4 St. Mary's Springs Ledgers 2-1 in the Division 4 Regional championship on Thursday at Peterson Park.

The Wolves fell behind 1-0 in the second inning on a RBI single by Gracie Konkel for the Ledgers.

St. Mary’s Springs carried the lead into the bottom of the fourth inning when Ryley Zimmerman led off with a single and advanced to second on a fielder's choice.  That set the stage for Nora Krause who delivered an RBI single to score Ryley tying the game 1-1.

The top of the fifth inning saw the Ledgers score the potential lead run on a tag up at second base and score by Konkel on a deep fly ball to right field.  But Konkel was called out after an appeal by Algoma that she left too early from second base.

The Wolves would then take the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jayden Nellis scored from second base on a ground ball throw that was dropped at first base for an error with two outs.

Macie Zimmerman took over from there for the Wolves, retiring the final eight batters and striking out the side in the seventh to end the game.

Zimmerman struck out nine batters while only allowing one run on four hits in going the distance for the complete game win.

St. Mary’s Springs finishes the season at 11-13.

The Wolves (23-3) will now head to the sectionals to play #2 Random Lake who defeated St. Mary’s Catholic, on Tuesday in Algoma.

Wolves

The Algoma Wolves suffered a complete letdown on defense Tuesday, as nine errors led to six unearned runs in a 10-5 home loss to the Mishicot Indians.

Starting Wolves pitcher Parker Lischka took the brunt of the poor defense, as only three of his seven runs allowed were earned in his two innings of work. Lischka did hit a long homer, his third of the season.

Charlie Prokash went 1-3 with two RBIs, and Grant Vendervest had two hits for the Wolves, but it was not enough.

Algoma travels to Marinette on Thursday in another non-conference matchup.
