Algoma softball can't hold on against Iola-Scandinavia

A three-run lead in the first inning slipped away from the Algoma softball team as they lost to Iola-Scandinavia in Waupaca Thursday.

 

All of the Wolves' runs and four of their six hits came in the first inning as their hosts chipped away from there, scoring once in the first, taking the lead with three in the third, and adding an insurance run in the fourth. 

Borths qualifies for state as wheelchair athlete

The road continues to state for Algoma wheelchair track athlete Logan Borths.

 

Competing at the Division 3 Sectional meet in Rosholt, Thursday, Borths set personal records in the 100m, 400m, 800m, and shot put to qualify for the state meet with two first-place finishes and two second-place finishes. 

 

For the boys, Carter Dachelet just missed out on a trip to state with a fifth place finish in shotput. Sydnee Guilette and Emily Kirchman also missed out on an appearance at state for the girls, but still finished in the top 10 in shotput.

Algoma faces Iola-Scandinavia for regional title-- UPDATE: Game moved to Waupaca

The road keeps winding on for the Algoma softball team as they face Iola-Scandinavia for the regional title.  The game has been moved to Waupaca 

 

The Wolves beat Coleman 10-4 to advance to the title game, winning their second game in a row.

 

Iola-Scandinavia earned their spot with a 5-1 win over Shiocton, their second victory in a row.

 

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m from Waupaca High School.

LOCATION CHANGE: Algoma baseball begins WIAA Tournament at home against Reedsville

The Algoma Wolves will get to stay home after all for their WIAA Tournament opener against Reedsville Thursday.

 

The Wolves had been on an eight-game losing streak before taking its final two contests against Sevastopol by 5-0 and 6-5 scores. 

 

Reedsville has been a little better, losing seven of their last 10 games. That includes a 2-1 win in their final matchup against Random Lake.

 

With the game being moved now to Algoma, the first pitch is now scheduled for 6 p.m. at Perry Field.

Algoma sends several to Rosholt sectional

Logan Borths will be accompanied by several of his teammates at this week's Rosholt Sectional representing Algoma.

 

Borth won all four of his wheelchair events unopposed to advance to Thursday's sectional. Joining him will be Carter Dachelet (shot put and discus), Austin Miller (pole vault), shot put throws Emily Kirchman and Sydney Guilette, and Dane Preston (high jump).

Wolves open tournament play with road game at Coleman

The road to Madison begins Tuesday afternoon when the Algoma Wolves travel to Coleman to face the Cougars.

 

The Wolves split their last games of the regular season, but needed a 10-9 win against Oconto last week to snap a four-game losing streak heading into the tournament. 

 

The Cougars had an eight game winning streak in the middle of the season to finish the year 13-4. They have split their last four matchups including a 4-0 loss to Peshtigo in the finale.

 

First pitch is 4:30 p.m.

Borths, Mattson, Kirchman lead way at Packerlands for Algoma

The Algoma track teams had plenty of strong performances on Monday at the Packerland Conference Track Championships hosted by Southern Door.

 

On the girls' side, Emily Kirchman took second in the shootout, and Morgan Mattson did the same in the 100m to lead the Wolves to an eighth-place finish. 

 

For the boys, Logan Borths won every wheelchair event, each one with a personal record. Kaden Vardon's personal record in the 100m was good enough for third place to help lead the Wolves to an eighth place finish.

Wolves baseball make up game against Kohler

The Algoma Wolves will make their way south Monday afternoon for game against Kohler.

 

The Wolves could only muster two runs in a pair of games last Thursday, losing both contests to Oconto by 11-1 and 8-1 scores.

 

Kohler has lost its last four games, including a 13-2 contest to Howards Grove last Thursday.

 

Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Mattson paces Algoma at Seymour Invite

Algoma's Morgan Mattson led the way for the girls' track team at Thursday's Seymour Invite.

 

She won her preliminary 100 m race before taking second in the finals. She also took second in the 300m hurdles and third in the triple jump and long jump events. Emily Kirchman posted top five performances in the shot put and discus events.

 

Alex Kirchman took ninth in the 1600m, and Carter Dachelet took sixth as the leaders for the boys' team.

Algoma hitters face Oconto

The Algoma baseball and softball teams stay at home Thursday to face Oconto.

 

The Wolves baseball team stymied Gibraltar earlier this week with a 2-0 victory. Javen Charles went the distance while scattering five hits in the shutout. Carson Leist delivered the win with a two-RBI single. The Blue Devils have responded after a two-game losing streak with a three winning streak with a two game sweep of Sevastopol and a win over Bonduel.

 

The Wolves softball team have lost their last two games, falling to Kewaunee and Neenah. The Blue Devils have won their last two games, including a 13-3 victory over Little Chute. 

 

The games begin at 4:30 p.m.

Algoma baseball welcomes Gibraltar

The Algoma baseball team continues Packerland play on Tuesday with a matchup against Gibraltar.

 

Jack Cole's run in the seventh inning was all Algoma could muster in a 6-1 loss to Hilbert last Friday night.

 
It was a mixed bag for Gibraltar's baseball team in last Thursday's doubleheader against Peshtigo, dropping their first game 3-0 before storming back in the second matchup 15-4.
