Wolves girls ready for fight versus Peshtigo

The Algoma Wolves will welcome in the Peshtigo Bulldogs for a Packerland conference matchup on Tuesday night.

Algoma is coming off of a 14 point loss to the hands of the Oconto Blue Devils, and will now take on Oconto neighbor in the conference. Emily Kirchman led the way in scoring for Algoma in their loss with 11, followed by Amelia Robinson with nine. Ryley Zimmerman still leads the way for the Wolves, but have found many role players along the stretch of the season that finds them with a .500 record overall and in conference play at 9-9 and 5-5 respectively.

Peshtigo will welcome the output that Akira Smalls gave them against Sturgeon Bay every time they hit the floor, as Smalls led the way with 25 points Friday night in a 62-36 win. The Bulldogs still find themselves tied with Oconto and two games back of Sevastopol in the Packerland conference, as they have won six straight Packerland matchups.

Tipoff in Algoma is set for 6:30 P.M.

Algoma boys set for home matchup against NEW Lutheran

The Algoma Wolves will welcome in one of the top teams in the Packerland so far this season in NEW Lutheran on Saturday.

Algoma is coming off of a recent victory over the Sturgeon Bay Clippers 53-45 on Thursday. Kaden Vardon has begun to seriously break out for the Wolves, and he proved that against the Clippers scoring 24 points in their victory. The Wolves fell to the Blazers in their matchup back on December 6th by a score of 64-45. Algoma will look to turn the tides on that past matchup on Saturday.

NEW Lutheran defeated the Bowler Panthers 81-40 on Thursday night thanks in part to a big scoring performance from multiple Blazers. Tristan Lynch was his usual self dropping 21 points, alongside 15 for Elijah Meerstein. Role players have proven themselves to be big for NEW this season, as Jack Henschel and Sam Hillman both scored over 10 as well. The Blazers enter the matchup with a 12-4 overall record, and 6-3 in Packerland play riding a lone game win streak after defeating Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday.

Tip from Algoma is set for 7:30 P.M.

Algoma girls fall to Oconto

The Algoma Wolves found themselves down early and never could catch up in their 62-48 loss against Oconto.

Emily Kirchman scored eight of the Wolves' 17 points in the first half on her way to a team-high 11 points. Amelia Robinson added nine points and Jadyn Nellis chipped in seven points.

The Blue Devils had three players reach double-figures in their win, led by Rylie Shallow's 20 points. Addisyn Viestenz scored 13 points and Natalie Schlueter added 12 points.

Wolves girls look for second opportunity against Oconto

After a narrow loss to the NEW Lutheran Blazers on Monday night, the Algoma Wolves girls basketball team will hit the road and take on the Oconto Blue Devils.

The Wolves were close throughout the entire game earlier in the week, but there was no stopping Ebony Sinclair of the Blazers as she poured in 24. Algoma faced the Blue Devils earlier in the season, and lost 54-51 as a last second half court heave fell short in hopes for overtime. The Wolves got great performances from Ryley Zimmerman and Halle Panger, and will look to pull off a win this time in Oconto.

For the Blue Devils, they recently rolled over the Sturgeon Bay Clippers 88-31 behind an all-around effort from multiple players. Sitting at 12-5 overall and 7-2 in the Packerland conference, Oconto is tied with Peshtigo and 2 games behind the Sevastopol Pioneers. The second-highest scoring offense in the conference will look to use that against the stingy Algoma Wolves.

Tip-off from Oconto is set for 7:30 P.M.

Algoma boys set for showdown with Clippers

The Algoma Wolves will welcome in the Sturgeon Bay Clippers on Thursday night for a Packerland conference battle.

The Wolves are coming off of a 68-52 loss to the Kewaunee Storm, a game where the Wolves stayed in for most of the first half. Kaden Vardon was his usual self, scoring 19 points, and Parker Lischka has become a strong second scoring option as he sprinkled in 12 as well. Algoma has lost five straight Packerland Conference games, dating back to their December 20th victory over the Sevastopol Pioneers.

Sturgeon Bay had a tale of two halves against the NEW Lutheran Blazers, as they led over the 4th place Blazers at halftime 33-25. The script was flipped however in the second half, as NEW Lutheran took control of the game and won the second half by 20 points, winning by 12. The Clippers have not won since their night honoring Coach Jim Benesh against the Wolves, where they won 58-35.

Tipoff from Algoma is set for 7:30 P.M.

Algoma girls can't douse Blazers

Falling by double-digits twice in the game, the Algoma girls' basketball could not get over the hump in a 59-54 loss on Monday night.

Riding behind the efforts of Lexie Meerstein's nine first-half points, the Blazers built up a 12-2 lead before the Wolves rallied back to make it a one-point game at half, thanks to threes made by Ryley Zimmerman, Sierra Slaby, and Teagan Luedke.

The Blazers would extend their lead to double-digits as Ebony Sinclair scored 18 of her game-high 24 points and Ingrid Beaumont registered 14 of her 20 points after the break. The Wolves would not go away quietly, getting the game to within one point before the Blazers would put the game on ice from the line. Emily Kirchman led the Wolves with 15 points while Zimmerman tallied 13 points in the loss.

The Algoma Athletic Department honored Lee Lawrenz ahead of Monday's game. A 1971 Algoma graduate, Lawrenz has covered his alma mater for over 50 years through various formats since starting his career at the now-defunct Algoma Monitor-Herald in 1977.

Wolves boys welcome in county rival Storm

The Algoma Wolves will host their inner-county rival Kewaunee Storm in boys basketball action Tuesday night.

Algoma wasn’t able to hold onto their lead at halftime against the Gibraltar Vikings, as they fell 58-53. The Wolves' Kaden Vardon took the reins of the game offensively. He scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the first half. In the last matchup versus the Storm, it was a 59-38 Kewaunee win for the first Packerland game of the season.

Kewaunee bounced back well after their close loss to the Eagles of Southern Door, as they defeated the Sturgeon Bay Clippers 74-49. At 9-4 overall, and 6-1 in the Packerland conference the Storm are in a good position halfway through the Packerland Conference season. The Storm will look to continue their success against the Wolves.

The tip from Algoma is set for 7:30 P.M.

Wolves girls storm back to defeat Vikings Saturday

The Algoma Wolves were able to sneak away with a 36-31 defensive battle on Saturday afternoon against the Gibraltar Vikings.

Algoma would be trailing at the half, as the Vikings lead 18-14 at the halfway point. Algoma did not get their first lead of the second half until the four minute mark. The Wolves would not give the lead up after that point, on their way to their 5 point lead. The win puts Algoma at 9-6 overall this season and 5-3 in Packerland play.

For Gibraltar, they take another close loss, this time leading the majority of the game. Their overall record falls to 2-10 and in the Packerland they are 1-6. The Vikings will hit the road on Monday when they take on the Gillett Tigers.

Algoma girls knock down Gresham with distance

Wolves girls host Gresham Wildcats

The Algoma Wolves girls basketball team will get back to action Thursday night when they take on Gresham Community at home.

Algoma is fresh off of a convincing win over Green Bay East on Monday night 61-20, where they led by 30 at half and continued to grow their lead. Emily Kirchman and Ryley Zimmerman were the big contributors in that matchup, and Zimmerman has taken control of the team as the leader in scoring this season. Algoma’s defense has been a big part of their success, holding teams under 50 in their last three games.

For Gresham, they have begun their season at 7-5 overall and lead the Central Wisconsin North Conference at 4-0 in conference play. That success has come from the hand of Madolyn Haffner, who has averaged 13.2 points per game on the season. The Wildcats are a strong defensive unit, averaging 13.8 steals per game.

Tip from Algoma is set for 7:30 P.M.

They received 13 points from Owen Robertson and 12 points from Kaden Vardon in the loss that dropped the Wolves to 3-7 on the season.

The Wildcats have not fared much better as they have started the year 1-10. Led by Blade Hoffman and Byron Nelson each scoring just over eight points per game, the Wildcats have failed to score more than 40 points in 10 of their 11 games.

Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.

Wolves girls demolish Red Devils

The Algoma girls basketball team jumped out to a 40-10 halftime lead and never looked back in its 61-20 win over Green Bay East on Monday night.

The Wolves got out to that fast start thanks to Ryley Zimmerman, who scored 15 of his team-high 21 points in the opening frame. Emily Kirchman also had a strong start as the team's second-leading scorer, adding eight of her 13 points in the first half. Halle Panger was right behind her with nine points in the game.

The real story could be the Wolves' defense, which held Jamaya Mariner to just 10 points after she scored over 20 points against Sturgeon Bay. No other Red Devils player scored more than three points as they made only seven shots from the field in 36 minutes of action.

Algoma girls head to Green Bay East

The Algoma girls' basketball team looks to continue their winning ways Monday night with a game at Green Bay East.

The Wolves snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night with a 55-32 win over Sturgeon Bay. The Wolves set the tone early, bringing a 37-12 lead into the break. The Red Devils are still looking for their first victory in their 13th try of the season. The Sturgeon Bay girls' basketball team withstood a hot-shooting night from Jamaya Mariner to win their second of the season over Green Bay East 59-45. Mariner led the Red Devils with a game-high 25 points.

Algoma looks to slow down Eagles Saturday

The Algoma Wolves will look to play spoiler to a potential four game winning streak for Southern Door as they welcome the Eagles in for a Packerland conference matchup.

The story of the season for the Wolves has begun to turn around a bit, with two close losses and a win in their last three games, after having a few blowout losses in the beginning of the year. Algoma’s guard play will have to be strong in this matchup, as they will be tasked with matching up against Southern Door’s Drew Daoust. Kaden Vardon and Owen Robertson will be asked to get the job done well on both ends of the court, and both have been up to the task so far this season.

In the case of Southern Door, they will continue to feed the hot hand, and make sure Drew Daoust gets the amount of touches and shots he needs to take. Daoust is averaging 30.7 points per game, which is good for 7th in the state. The Eagles defense has been suffocating as well, as they have held five teams under 55 points this season.

Tip from Algoma is set for 7:30 P.M.

Wolves girls claw past Clippers

Three Wolves players reached double figures as Algoma beat their northern rivals Sturgeon Bay 55-32.

The Wolves set the tone early, bringing a 37-12 lead into the break. Ryley Zimmerman scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half. Emily Kirchman added 12 points and Teagan Luedtke registered another 11 points to help pace the Wolves.

Wolves girls finish back to back versus Clippers

On the second night of a back to back, the Algoma Wolves will take on the Sturgeon Bay Clippers Friday night.

Algoma has sputtered as of late after getting off to a hot start. The Wolves had lost 3 of their last four games heading into their matchup with Southern Door Thursday night. Overall good outside shooting has been the factor for that, shooting 25.6% from three as a team. Defense has been the main strength for the Wolves, as they hold their opponents to 44.5 points per game.

For Sturgeon Bay, they as well will play in back to back matchups, after taking on the Green Bay East Red Devils Thursday night. Still looking for their first win in Packerland play, Sturgeon Bay could look to play upset over the Wolves. That would be led by the guard play of the Clippers, with Autumn Rass, Dasha Yeltysheva and Emma Reinhardt all being the leading scorers for Sturgeon Bay.

Tip from Algoma at 7:30 P.M.

Algoma boys travel to Peshtigo

Going up north around the water, the Algoma Wolves will travel to Peshtigo to take on the Bulldogs Thursday night.

The Algoma Wolves are fresh off of their win against Cambria-Friesland in the Elkhart Lake Tournament by a score of 58-40. They will turn their attention back to the Packerland conference as they take on conference leader and 8-1 overall Peshtigo Bulldogs. The last time they took on a conference opponent, they took down the Pioneers 70-21.

The Peshtigo Bulldogs are on a seven game winning streak, and have not lost a game since November 26th in the Packerland/M&O Challenge against the Crivitz Wolverines 60-56. Their closest win of the season was a 57-52 win over Marinette on December 10th, and Kaine Fort has been a main reason for the streak of the Bulldogs.

Tip from Peshtigo is set for 7:30 P.M.
