Algoma girls can't douse Blazers

Falling by double-digits twice in the game, the Algoma girls' basketball could not get over the hump in a 59-54 loss on Monday night.

Riding behind the efforts of Lexie Meerstein's nine first-half points, the Blazers built up a 12-2 lead before the Wolves rallied back to make it a one-point game at half, thanks to threes made by Ryley Zimmerman, Sierra Slaby, and Teagan Luedke.

The Blazers would extend their lead to double-digits as Ebony Sinclair scored 18 of her game-high 24 points and Ingrid Beaumont registered 14 of her 20 points after the break. The Wolves would not go away quietly, getting the game to within one point before the Blazers would put the game on ice from the line. Emily Kirchman led the Wolves with 15 points while Zimmerman tallied 13 points in the loss.

The Algoma Athletic Department honored Lee Lawrenz ahead of Monday's game. A 1971 Algoma graduate, Lawrenz has covered his alma mater for over 50 years through various formats since starting his career at the now-defunct Algoma Monitor-Herald in 1977.
