Softball Ray's shares Player of the Year honors for Algoma

Algoma can boast one of its own as the player of the year in softball as the Packerland Conference announced its All-Conference accolades for soccer, baseball, and softball earlier this week.

Natalie Ray shared Player of the Year honors with Kewaunee's Breanna Riha to go with her First Team Catch selection. Macie Zimmerman (First Team Pitcher),  and Amya Lukes (Honorable Mention) joined her on the squad.

Charlie Prokash (First Team Pitcher), Braeden Leist (First Team Outfielder), Calen DeMeuse (Second Team Catcher), and Jacob Massey (Second Team  Utility/DP) were named to the All-Packerland Conference baseball team.

Wolves softball season ends in Johnson Creek

The Algoma softball team came up one win short of the WIAA State Tournament on Thursday, falling to Johnson Creek 8-0 in the sectional final.

The Buglass family did their part to ensure the Wolves heartbreak on the Blue Jays' home field. Leading 6-0 in the top of the sixth, Taylor Buglass homered to make it 8-0 for the final runs of the game. Tori Buglass had more than enough run support as she limited the Wolves to just three hits while striking out 12 across seven innings.

The Wolves' best chance to scratch across a run came in the bottom of the fourth inning when Natalie Ray doubled to put a player in scoring position for the only time in the game. Ryley Tweedy and Bristol Schmidt tallied singles while Macie Zimmerman was hit by a pitch for the only other base runners in the game for the Wolves.

Zimmerman took the loss in her final game for the Wolves, allowing eight runs (5 ER) on 13 hits and five walks while striking out five across seven innings.

The Wolves end their season 15-10.

Algoma softball looks to punch ticket to state against Johnson Creek

The Algoma softball team is one win away from advancing to the state softball tournament since going back-to-back seasons in 2012 and 2013 when they play on the road at Johnson Creek Thursday afternoon.

Macie Zimmerman was absolutely dominant Tuesday, throwing a complete game no-hitter as Algoma softball topped St. Mary's Springs 4-0 in a sectional semifinal matchup. Zimmerman didn't just dominate in the circle, though, she got things going offensively too, launching a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Wolves on top early. Amya Lukes went 2-for-2 at the top of the lineup and Ryley Tweedy added an RBI single to round out the scoring. As a team, the Wolves collected six hits working through eight strikeouts to push across four runs. Zimmerman struck out six across the complete game and retired the final batter on a groundout to complete the no-no and send Algoma to the sectional final.

The Bluejays' state drought is even longer as they have not returned to Madison since 2003. In their 2-0 win against Random Lake on Tuesday, Tori Buglass went the distance in the circle with 10 strikeouts while allowing no runs on three hits. She also did it at the plate with two hits while Libby Burbach's two RBI double was the difference in the win.

First pitch is set for 5 p.m. in Johnson Creek.

Algoma Baseball Season Comes to a Close at Brillion

The Algoma Wolves baseball season came to a close Tuesday, falling to Brillion 9-1 in regional play.

Brillion jumped on the Wolves early and never looked back, putting up five runs through three innings and cruising from there. Landon Mathes went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Lions offense, while Joe Shimek was sharp on the mound, allowing just one unearned run over seven innings.

Cal DeMeuse went 2-for-3 to lead Algoma at the plate and Jack Schwader drove in the team's only run, but the Wolves couldn't generate enough offensively to keep pace.

The season comes to a close with a 10-15 overall record and the Wolves will have to part with some impactful seniors before turning their attention to summer baseball.

Zimmerman Throws No-hitter, Wolves Softball Advances to Sectional Final

The Wolves will face Johnson Creek, a fellow one-seed in their respective regional, Thursday at 5pm with a trip to state on the line. Should be a good one!

Algoma baseball continues tourney play at Brillion

The Algoma baseball team looks to keep their season alive on Tuesday when it travels to Brillion to face the Lions.

The Wolves staved off elimination with a 3-2 win over Mishicot in their tournament opener. Braeden Leist and Dylan Seiler each had two hits in the victory with Leist's RBI double the difference in the game. Charlie Prokash dealt in his home season finale, allowing two runs (0 ER) on four hits while striking out 12 across 6.2 innings.

The Lions have been idle since they clipped Marinette 5-4 in their season finale. It put an end to a two-game losing streak. Before that stretch, it had been since April 2nd since the Lions came up empty, losing their season opener against Plano 4-3 and Marian Catholic 16-1.

First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Algoma softball welcomes St. Mary's Springs for sectional semifinal

The Algoma softball team hopes that the home cooking remains hot as they play St. Mary's Springs in sectional semifinal action on Tuesday.

The Wolves won the regional title last Thursday with a 10-0 win over Markesan. Macie Zimmermann struck out 11 batters across five innings of no-hit ball against the Hornets, adding to her collection of similar performances in her Algoma career. Her teammates did the work at the plate, scoring five times in the first and fifth innings to end the game early due to the mercy rule. Amya Lukes capped off the first five-spot with an RBI single while Ryley Tweedy walked off the Hornets with a single of her own. The Wolves only needed four hits to score their runs, instead feasting on three Hornets errors and eight walks. Tweedy and Lukes each had two hits and combined for three RBI.

With a 6-13 record entering the tournament, the Ledgers have caught fire with two upsets on the road, knocking off St. Mary Catholic 7-1 and Princeton/Green Lake 8-3.

First pitch from Peterson Park is set for 4:30 p.m.
