Wolves softball to make up game with Crivitz Tuesday

The Algoma Wolves softball team will get their crack at Crivitz on Tuesday after having their first attempt postponed.

In their last action, they were swept in a doubleheader against Waupun and Two Rivers in frigid conditions Saturday. In Game 1, Algoma managed just two hits in a 13-1 loss to Waupun. Despite the lopsided score, Mackenzie Lischka battled through all seven innings in the circle, striking out five. The chilly weather only seemed to tighten its grip in Game 2, where Algoma fell 10-0 to the Two Rivers Raiders. This time, the Wolves showed slight improvement at the plate, collecting four hits. Sadie Rikkola and Ella Severinsen each had one hit to give them two on the day. Macie Zimmerman turned in a strong effort in the circle despite the score, striking out seven and allowing just two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Prokash powers Game 1; Wolves drop nightcap

Algoma baseball split a back-and-forth doubleheader with Peshtigo on Saturday, riding a big offensive performance in Game 1 before falling in extras in the nightcap.

Charlie Prokash set the tone early, driving in four runs on three hits to lead the Wolves to a 12-6 win in the opener. His two-run double sparked a go-ahead third inning, and Algoma never looked back, adding five more runs in the sixth to break it open.

The Wolves racked up 11 hits and showed patience at the plate with seven walks, while Prokash also delivered on the mound with eight strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.

Game 2 flipped the script. Algoma jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind early production from Jacob Massey and Braeden Leist, who finished with three hits, but couldn’t hold off a late Peshtigo push. The Wolves battled back to tie it at five in the fifth, only to see Peshtigo pull away with three runs in the eighth to secure an 8-5 win.

A day of rest stands between Algoma and its next game, a date with Two Rivers on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Algoma's offense cold in a pair of tough losses Saturday

Algoma Wolves softball was swept in a doubleheader against Waupun and Two Rivers in frigid conditions Saturday, despite a strong start to the season.

In Game 1, Algoma managed just two hits in a 13-1 loss to Waupun. Despite the lopsided score, Mackenzie Lischka battled through all seven innings in the circle, striking out five.

The Wolves struggled to generate offense against a dominant Waupun pitching performance that piled up 13 strikeouts, keeping Algoma off balance all game.

Defensive miscues proved costly, as unearned runs widened the gap.

The Wolves will look to regroup and rediscover their offensive spark in their next matchup at Crivitz on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Algoma holds off late surge from Peshtigo

Algoma Wolves softball was on the road against the Peshtigo Bulldogs Friday and rallied to a 6-4 win behind Macie Zimmerman's seven innings of work.

Zimmerman struck out 12 and didn't allow a single earned run in the outing. She also helped her own cause drawing three walks at the plate and scoring a run.

Natalie Ray delivered twice when Algoma needed it the most, driving in four of the Wolves' six runs. She doubled in the top of the third with two outs to take the lead after falling behind 1-0 in the second. Another two out single with the bases loaded put Algoma ahead 6-1.

Trouble came in the bottom of the seventh and Peshtigo made it interesting, coming within two, but Zimmerman induced a ground ball to herself to end the inning after a two-out error extended the game.

Algoma turns around for a quick double-header against Waupun and Two Rivers at 10 and 11:30am.

Wolves softball taking on doubleheader at Peshtigo

The Algoma softball team prepares for a doubleheader Friday at Peshtigo against the Bulldogs.

In Game 2, the Wolves scored in all five innings, including five in the fourth and six in the fifth to end the game early. They took advantage of eight Gibraltar errors along with 14 hits and four walks. Offensively, Emma DeMeuse’s leadoff home run in the second inning, Ella Severinsen’s two-run single, and Natalie Ray’s two-run double in the fifth highlighted the performance.

First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Wolves baseball looks for bounceback in Mishicot

The Algoma Wolves look to get back into the win column on Monday when they welcome Mishicot for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch.

The Wolves took a pair of hard losses on Saturday in their doubleheader against Gibraltar, which took both ends of a doubleheader by winning the opener 3-1 before holding off a wild comeback attempt in the nightcap to walk off 10-9. Game one was a pitcher's duel from start to finish. Jacob Massey was outstanding for the Wolves, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing just two hits while striking out 13. In game two, Algoma out-hit Gibraltar ten to nine and drew 10 walks, but a stunning seven-run seventh inning by Gibraltar erased what looked like a sure Wolves win. Algoma had flipped a 3-3 game on its head in the top of the seventh, plating six runs capped by a three-run double from Jonah Dahms to go up 9-3.  Braeden Leist led Algoma with three hits, and Dahms drove in four despite going just 2-for-2. Charlie Prokash started and was solid through five innings, allowing just one unearned run while striking out six.

Zimmerman's no-no starts Algoma softball sweep over GIbraltar on 105.1 The GOAT

The Algoma softball team received strong pitching to pair with its potent offense Friday evening as it swept Gibraltar in a doubleheader, 18-0 and 18-2.

In the first game, which aired on 105.1 The GOAT, the Wolves and Vikings kept each other scoreless in the first inning, and it stayed that way until Emma DeMeuse delivered a one-out single to make it 1-0. The Wolves batted around in the inning, with two bases-loaded walks and a two-run single from Natalie Ray making it 5-0. It could have been even more if not for a heads-up play by Marin Gransee, who threw the ball to Mia Glocke at home plate following a passed ball to cut down a streaking Macie Zimmerman.

In the third inning, Zimmerman continued to mow down Vikings batters, retiring the side in order via strikeouts for the second consecutive inning. The Wolves followed by batting around in both the third and fourth innings, scoring four times in the third and nine times in the fourth to end the game via mercy rule. Zimmerman finished her five-inning no-hitter with two more strikeouts before inducing a groundout to end the game.

Ray, Emma DeMeuse and Ella Severinsen each drove in three runs, while Bristol Schmidt and Amaly Lukes each had a pair of hits in the win. Zimmerman had 11 strikeouts to go along with no hits or walks allowed. For the Vikings, Glocke and Gabby Solomon split the pitching duties, combining for seven strikeouts but allowing 14 walks in the loss.

In Game 2, the Wolves scored in all five innings, including five in the fourth and six in the fifth to end the game early again. The Wolves had plenty of baserunners, taking advantage of eight Gibraltar errors to go along with their 14 hits and four walks. Offensively, Emma DeMeuse’s leadoff home run in the second inning, Ella Severinsen’s two-run single and Natalie Ray’s two-run double in the fifth provided the fireworks for the Wolves.

The Vikings began to get their bats going in the second inning with back-to-back singles from Celeste Ashley and Megan Gallant before scoring their first runs in the third inning on an error. Olivia Pelkey recorded the other Vikings hit. Mackenzie Lischka earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs (0 earned) on three hits while striking out eight. Emilie Glocke took the loss, allowing 18 runs (4 earned) on 14 hits while striking out five.
