Algoma softball walks off with regional title

The drama was well worth it for the Algoma softball team as they beat St. Mary's Springs 8-7 in walk-off fashion.

St. Mary's Springs set the tone early as they plated four in the first inning against pitcher Macie Zimmerman. The Wolves would chip away in subsequent innings with Nora Krause's RBI single in the first inning and Brooke Mattson's swipe of home on a wild pitch. They would take the lead in the fourth inning with their own four-running inning thanks to Sierra Slaby's RBI double and a three-run home run by Amelia Robinson. Down 6-4, St. Mary's Springs would mount their own comeback with two runs their next time up to tie the game and took the lead on a Waechter homer in the sixth inning. The Wolves would not score until Jaydyn Nellis cleared the bases on a triple to drive in Hannah Nell and Teagen Luedke and send the team to next week's WIAA Sectional. Macie Zimmerman picked up the win in the circle as she went the distance, allowing seven runs (4 ER) and 11 hits while striking out four.

The Wolves (16-6) host second-seeded St. Mary's Catholic in a sectional semifinal Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The winner plays for a shot at state Thursday at Crivitz vs. either Bonduel or Iola-Scandinavia.
