The Algoma Wolves softball team is just one game away from the state tournament in Madison as they took down the St. Mary Catholic Zephyrs 5-2 on Tuesday afternoon. 

 

It was the strong pitching from freshman Macie Zimmerman that set the tone for Algoma, as she started the game shutting down the Zephyr offense in order. She would single to load the bases in the bottom half of the first inning, then Nora Krause would single home a run to make it 1-0 Algoma. Hannah Nell would then drive in the second run of the inning and the Wolves would shock St. Mary Catholic early 2-0. 

 

After Zimmerman got through the first two innings in just 27 pitches the Zephyrs would respond with a run of their own in the top of the third inning on a passed ball scoring Rhiannon Reichenbacher making the game 2-1. 

 

The Wolves would get that run back in the bottom of the fourth after a single and a steal from Brooke Mattson would set up Ryley Zimmerman to sacrifice Mattson over to third. Macie Zimmerman would then double in Mattson to give Algoma the 3-1 lead. 

 

Adding on one in the fifth and sixth were the Wolves after St. Mary Catholic scored one in the top of the sixth to make the final 5-2. The Wolves will now travel to Crivitz on Thursday to face Iola-Scandinavia in the sectional final matchup with a trip to Goodman Diamond in Madison in sight.
