A late rally by Sevastopol was wiped away by heavy rain Tuesday afternoon, as top-seeded Algoma secured a 7-3 victory in a WIAA Division 4 regional semifinal that was called after five completed innings.
The game, suspended in the sixth inning due to worsening weather at Peterson Park, became official under WIAA rules, ending Sevastopol’s postseason run despite a surge that briefly threatened the outcome.
Trailing 7-3 entering the sixth, the No. 8-seeded Pioneers mounted a comeback in the downpour. Sienna Cain delivered a two-run triple that nearly cleared the fence, and Adison Sawyer followed with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to one run. However, the inning was never completed, nullifying the rally when play was halted.
Algoma had already built its lead behind a strong performance from pitcher Macie Zimmerman, who allowed just three hits over five innings while striking out seven and walking three. Zimmerman earned the win for the Wolves.
Sevastopol’s Leah Schopf took the loss, surrendering nine hits while striking out four and issuing three walks.
When play was stopped, Algoma had two runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, but the game was not resumed.
With the win, the Wolves advance to the regional championship Thursday, where they will host No. 4-seed Markesan.
