Kolberg captures DCBL Playoff Crown

The Kolberg Braves completed their double championship season on Sunday, beating Sister Bay 7-0 in the playoff title game.

The Braves jumped on the Bays from the word go as Austin Rohe followed a Trevor Reinhardt with a home run to make it 2-0 in the first inning. A Nick LeCaptain RBI single added an insurance run in the fifth while a four run eighth inning destroyed any hope the Bays had crawling back into the game.

The Braves outhit the Bays 13-2 behind four hits from Reinhardt, three hits from LeCaptain, and two hits from Rohe, Jack Peterson, and Austen Dart. Griffin Cole and Casey Weddig were the only batters to solve the pitching puzzle of Reinhardt and Tyler Neinas, who combined to strike out 11 batters in their joint two-hit shutout.

Rattlers Fall in Home Finale

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were looking for a key hit but couldn’t find it on Sunday against the Quad Cities River Bandits in the final game of the season at Neuroscience Group Field.  The Rattlers wound up stranding ten runners, including seven in the final three innings, as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Bandits.

Wisconsin (53-71 overall, 19-40 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the first.  Jesús Made singled and went to second on a wild pitch with one out.  Then, Luke Adams walked.  Josh Adamczewski followed with an RBI single to score Made for a 1-0 lead.

Kay-Lan Nicasia added to the Wisconsin lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a lead-off home run to left.  Nicasia’s fifth homer of the season made it 2-0.

Quad Cities (71-55, 32-28) got on the board in the top of the sixth.  Nolan Sailors tripled to start the inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Manuel Rodriguez.  Sam Kulasingam flew out to center to knock in Sailors with a sacrifice fly.

Rodriguez pitched six innings, allowed one run on five hits, walked none, and struck out six for his third quality start of the season.

The River Bandits rallied in the top of the seventh against reliever Aaron Rund.  A walk, a single, and a walk to the first three batters of the inning loaded the bases.  Hunter Ensley hit a high chopper to short with the only play to first base and that scored the tying run.  Sailors hit a grounder to second with the infield in and Made came home with the play, but it was late to score the go-ahead run.  Kulasingam added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead.

Wisconsin had several opportunities in the final three innings.

The first two batters reached in the bottom of the seventh against Dennis Colleran.  A 3-6-3 double play got the first two outs.  A hit batsman allowed the go-ahead run to come to the plate.  Colleran got out of the inning with a grounder to third.

In the eighth, Tommy Molsky walked the first three batters to load the bases with Rattlers.  Zachary Cawyer took over and got out of the jam with a force play at the plate and back-to-back strikeouts.

Nicasia started the bottom of the ninth inning with a single.  Cawyer followed that with a wild pitch to move Nicasia to second base.  Two strikeouts brought Made to the plate with two away and he drew a walk to get the winning run to the plate.

Adams hit a line drive to right-center field, but the ball hung up for Trevor Werner to race over from right to make the catch to end the game.  Wisconsin ended the game 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The attendance on Sunday was 6,079 to push Wisconsin’s season total to 236,441.  In their final eighteen home games of 2025, Wisconsin drew 99,134 fans.  They surpassed the 5,000 mark fifteen out of eighteen times in their last three homestands.  Sunday was also the fifth time they went past 6,000 in attendance.

Quad Cities picked up a game on the first place Beloit Sky Carp in the second half playoff race.  Beloit lost 2-1 at Cedar Rapids on Sunday.  The River Bandits are 1-1/2 games behind the Sky Carp with six games remaining in the season.

The Timber Rattlers conclude their season with a six-game road trip to South Bend, Indiana to face the South Bend Cubs.  Game one is set for Tuesday night at Four Winds Field.  Tanner Gillis (2-2, 2.98) is set to start for Wisconsin.  The Cubs have tentatively announced Dawson Netz (0-1, 3.60) as their starter.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Braves and Bays battle for DCBL Playoff Title

Sister Bay and Kolberg will suit up on final time against each other this season on Sunday afternoon with the playoff championship on the line.

It will be a familiar sight in Kolberg after the Braves beat the Mets 10-1 and Sister Bay topped West Jacksonport 3-2 last Sunday. The Braves captured the regular season behind the league's pitcher of the year Trevor Reinhardt. The Bays stumbled late in the campaign to lose their grip on the top spot.

The two teams split their matchups this season with the Bays winning the first one in Sister Bay 4-3 behind a three hits days from Tom Sawyer. The Braves avenged the loss weeks later with a 7-1 win featuring homers from Austin Rohe and Christian Counard.

First pitch is set for 1:30 p.m. in Kolberg.

Bandits Pull Away From Rattlers

The Quad Cities River Bandits scored four times in the top of the fourth inning.  The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to get close, but they could only watch as the visitors pulled away for an 8-2 win at Neuroscience Group Field.  Drew Beam went seven innings as the starting pitcher for the Bandits to earn the win.

Quad Cities (70-55 overall, 31-28 second half) grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth inning.  The first two batters of the inning reached base.  Daniel Vazquez moved both runners up a base with a sacrifice fly.  Austin Charles knocked in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

The River Bandits added to their advantage with three consecutive RBI hits in the inning.  Trevor Werner and Carter Frederick had RBI singles.  Canyon Brown made it 4-0 with an RBI double.

Marco Dinges got the Timber Rattlers (53-70, 19-39) on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth with an opposite-field, two-run home run to right.  Dinges has hit eight home runs with Wisconsin this season.

The Bandits extended their lead with a run in the fifth, two runs in the sixth, and a run in the seventh while the Rattlers managed four baserunners from the fifth through the ninth.

Sam Kulasingam, who started the rally in the top of the fourth inning, drove in a run with an RBI single in the fifth.

Nolan Sailors had an RBI double in the sixth with Kulasingam knocking in another run with a sacrifice fly.

Frederick singled in the seventh to drive in the final run of the game.

Beam allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeout over his seven innings for his seventh win of the season.

Jesús Made had two of Wisconsin’s six hits for his tenth multi-hit game in 21 games as a Rattler.

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers host their final home game of the 2025 season on Sunday afternoon.  Manuel Rodriguez (2-5, 3.15) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  He will face Quad Cities starter Mason Miller (1-1, 0.57).  Game time is 1:10pm.

Bandits Shut Out Wisconsin 5-0

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were held to four hits as the Quad Cities River Bandits beat them 5-0 Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Felix Arronde pitched seven scoreless innings, allowed two hits, and was supported by four two-out runs from his offense to pick up the victory.

The River Bandits (69-55 overall, 30-28 second half) got on the board with a two-out rally in the top of the first.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Bishop Letson retired the first two batters before giving up a single to Daniel Vazquez, who stole second and scored on an RBI double by Chris Brito.

Quad Cities followed a similar pattern to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.  Carter Frederick walked with one out and stole second with two out.  Erick Torres singled to drive in Frederick for a 2-0 lead.

Austin Charles made it 3-0 with a one-out, solo home run off Jefferson Figueroa in the fourth inning.

Torres struck again in the sixth against Sam Garcia.  Charles drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a passed ball.  Garcia had two outs on back-to-back strikeouts.  Then, Torres doubled just inside the first base bag to drive in Charles.

Brito made it a 5-0 lead with a two-out, solo home run in the seventh.

Wisconsin (53-69, 19-38) could do almost nothing against Arronde.  The right-hander walked none and struck out three over seven scoreless innings.  The only hits for the Rattlers were a one-out double by Blayberg Diaz in the third and a lead-off single by Marco Dinges in the fifth.

The Rattlers got a pair of two-out singles in the eighth from Diaz and Daniel Guilarte against reliever Max Martin, but they could not find the big two-out hit to get on the scoreboard.  Juan Martinez closed out the fourteenth shutout of the season for the River Bandits with a perfect ninth inning.

Garcia struck out nine in his four innings of relief for the Rattlers to set a new single-game high as a pro.

Friday night marked the fifth time Wisconsin has been shut out this month.

The pitching matchup on Saturday night is Travis Smith (1-1, 2.55) on the mound for the Rattlers against Drew Beam (6-10, 3.87) for the Bandits.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Wisconsin Snaps Losing Skid with 3-2 win

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had enough. The team had lost five games in a row and were eliminated from playoff contention going into Thursday’s game against the Quad Cities River Bandits at Neuroscience Group Field. None of that mattered as Ryan Birchard tossed a gem, Luke Adams returned to provide some punch on a rehab assignment, and Anthony Flores closed out a 3-2 victory.

Birchard was the story for the Rattlers (53-68 overall, 19-37 second half). The right-hander retired the first eleven batters he faced with a dazzling play by shortstop Jesús Made getting the second out of the fourth inning.

A four-pitch walk to Blake Mitchell gave Quad Cities (68-55, 29-28) their first base runner. Then, Birchard started another streak as he set down the final ten batters he faced. Birchard struck out eight over seven no-hit innings for his longest outing as a pro. He struck out his last two batters faced before he was told he was done after 83 pitches.

Adams, who was activated on a Minor League rehabilitation assignment from the Biloxi Shuckers of the Southern League, returned to action for the first time since June 19. It looked like he didn’t miss a beat. In the bottom of the fifth, Made and Josh Adamczewski had singled with one out. Adams laced a double down the line in left to score both runners for a 2-0 lead.

In the seventh, Adams had a lead-off double, moved to third on a grounder to the right side by Tayden Hall, and scored on a wild pitch for a three-run advantage.

Yerlin Rodriguez was called into the game for the top of the eighth. The crowd of 5,200 was buzzing after a strikeout started the inning to bring Wisconsin to within five outs of their first nine-inning no-hitter since June 10, 2021.

However, a walk to Trevor Werner was followed by an RBI double from Canyon Brown to end the shutout and the no-hit bid. Rodriguez compounded the tension with a pair of wild pitches later in the inning that would allow Brown to score and cut Wisconsin’s lead to a run.

In the ninth, the Rattlers asked Anthony Flores to get the final three outs. Flores had been 0-for-2 this season in save opportunities and 0-for-4 in his career. He got the first out. But the playoff hopeful Bandits weren’t going to make it easy. Sam Kulasingam reached on an infield single and a walk to Mitchell put the tying runs on base.

Flores got the second out with a strikeout. However, the degree of difficulty went up a few degrees when a passed ball by catcher Andrick Nava allowed both runners on base into scoring position. Flores finally got his man when Derlin Figueroa lined out to right to end the game.

Night two of Bratoberfest presented by Salmon’s Meat Products is game five of the series on Friday at Neuroscience Group Field. Bishop Letson (2-1, 1.45) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The River Bandits have named Felix Arronde (4-7, 2.81) as their starter. Game time is set for 6:40pm.

More teams kick off soccer season

After Gibraltar/Sevastopol kicked off the local slate with a 1-0 loss to Denmark on Tuesday, more local teams are joining the fray on Thursday.

Thursday's matchups include Kewaunee traveling to NEW Lutheran, Algoma hosting Wrightstown (4:30 p.m.), Gibraltar/Sevastopol playing Providence Academy at Howard's Spring Green Park, and Sturgeon Bay hosting Peshtigo. All of the games begin at 4:30 p.m. The lone exception is Luxemburg-Casco's 3:30 p.m. match at Ripon.

Packers form practice squad

Many of the Green Bay Packers players cut by the organization on Tuesday will stay in town after signing on with the practice squad on Wednesday.

RB Israel Abanikanda, DL Deslin Alexandre, DB Johnathan Baldwin, T Brant Banks, DL James Ester, WR Mecole Hardman, LB Jamon Johnson, K Mark McNamee (NFL International Player Pathway program), DL Arron Mosby, WR Isaiah Neyor, WR Will Sheppard, DB Jaylin Simpson and LB Kristian Welch all signed contracts to stick with the team as a member of the practice squad. Thanks to new roster rules, some of the players could bounce between the practice squad and the 53-man roster depending on injuries.

The Packers also signed fifth-year pro Nick Niemann after being cut by the Houston Texans. Primarily a special teams player, Packers.com reports that the former sixth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Chargers led the team in tackles on special teams in three of his four seasons with the club.

Rattlers Fall as Bandits Break Tie with Five Runs in Ninth

Big offensive nights by Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Andrew Fischer and Jesús Made were spoiled when the Quad Cities River Bandits broke a 4-4 with five runs in the top of the ninth inning to pick up a 9-5 win and more ground in the second half West Division playoff race.

The top of Wisconsin’s order got them the lead in the first inning.  Fischer and Made had back-to-back singles to open the inning.  Josh Adamczewski drove in Fischer with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

In the second, the Rattlers (52-68 overall, 18-38 second half) added to their lead with an RBI double by Blayberg Diaz and an RBI single by Made.

The River Bandits (68-54, 29-27) got on the scoreboard in the top of the third with two outs on back-to-back doubles by Noah Sailors and Sam Kulasingam.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Tanner Gillis gave up a lead-off double and a walk to start the top of the fourth before leaving with a blister on his right index finger.  Jack Seppings was called in from the Rattlers bullpen.

Seppings got the first out, but a walk loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly by Erick Torre cut Wisconsin’s lead to 3-2.  Sailors walked on a 3-2 pitch to reload the bases.  Seppings went full to Kulasingam before walking him to force in the tying run.  Another 3-2 pitch was out of the zone to Blake Mitchell to force in the go-ahead run.

Fischer tied the game with a two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.

The game stayed tied through eight innings when things went sideways on the Rattlers.

Reliever Aaron Rund gave up an infield single to Torres to start the inning.  Sailors was asked to drop a sacrifice bunt.  He did and the Rattlers thought they had the out at first.  However, Sailors was called safe.  Kulasingam followed with another sacrifice bunt, and he was out at first.  Wisconsin elected to walk Mitchell intentionally to load the bases.

Daniel Vazquez sent a high chopper on the infield for another infield single with this one putting the Bandits up 5-4.  Chris Brito grounded into a force play at second to drive in the second run.  Trevor Werner, the seventh man to bat in the inning, singled into center for another run.

Two errors let the Bandits add two more runs.  A misplay on a grounder to Luis Peña let in the fourth run of the inning.  Then, with runners at first and second, catcher Marco Dinges tried to pick a runner off first.  The throw was wild.  Werner, the runner at second scored easily.  Austin Charles, the runner from first, tried to score on the play and was out on a relay throw from Made.

Fischer, the #1 draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2025 draft, gave the crowd something to cheer with a long, one-out, solo home run in the bottom of the ninth.  The homer was Fischer’s first as a professional.

Made followed with a double for his fourth hit of the night.  Made, the #1 prospect of the Brewers, went 4-for-5 with two doubles for his first four-hit game as a Timber Rattler.

Wisconsin has lost five in a row.  The River Bandits picked up a game on both the South Bend Cubs and Beloit Sky Carp in the standings.  South Bend and Beloit entered the evening tied at the top of the West Division.  Both teams lost on Wednesday night to allow Quad Cities to pull to within 1-1/2 games of the top spot with ten games remaining in the season.

The Rattlers and Bandits meet in game three of the series on Thursday night.  Ryan Birchard (3-8, 4.23) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  Logan Martin (8-4, 3.75) is set to start for Quad Cities.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Green Bay Settles on Roster for Week 1

With the 53-man roster deadline set for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Green Bay Packers and head coach Matt LaFleur were busy making decisions on who would fill each opening.

Continuing a 21-year tradition, the Packers kept an undrafted rookie on the initial roster. This time it was defensive lineman Nazir Stackhouse out of Georgia.

With initial depth concerns at wide receiver, the return of Christian Watson delayed until Week 4, and the addition of first-round pick Matthew Golden, Green Bay kept six wide receivers and cut veteran Mecole Hardman, a speedster who spent much of his career in Kansas City as part of three Super Bowl-winning seasons.

Bo Melton also made the 53-man roster after making the switch from WR to CB this offseason, not a surprising move considering Matt LaFleur was high on Melton all camp, but an impressive transition nonetheless.

Quad Cities Keeps Wisconsin Quiet

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers opened their final homestand of the season by scoring a run in bottom of the first inning.  Then, the Quad Cities River Bandits held the Rattlers scoreless the rest of the game as they collected ten hits on the way to a 5-1 victory at Neuroscience Group Field.

Wisconsin (52-67 overall, 18-37 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the first.  Andrew Fischer doubled and stole third to start the inning.  Jesús Made drove in Fischer with a ground out for a 1-0 lead.

Quad Cities (67-54, 28-27) went in front in the top of the fourth.  Austin Charles hit a two-out, two-run home run to left for a 2-1 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Nolan Sailors doubled with one out.  Sam Kulasingam drove in Sailors with a single to push the Bandits advantage to 3-1.

Mason Miller, the starting pitcher for the River Bandits, worked five innings and didn’t allow another hit after the double by Fischer in the fifth.  He walked one, but that runner was wiped out on a stolen base attempt.  Miller struck out six.

Fischer singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Andrew Morones, but Fischer would be thrown out trying to steal second base.  Morones and Hunter Alberini retired the final nine Rattlers of the game.

Before Alberini closed out the game with a perfect bottom of the ninth, Quad Cities tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth.  Charles started the rally with his third hit of the game.  Carter Frederick followed with an RBI double to center.  Sailors cashed in the final run of the contest with a single, his fourth hit of the evening.

The Rattlers sent 28 batters to the plate in the game, one over the minimum of 27.  They had one at bat with a runner in scoring position, the RBI grounder by Made.

Fischer had both hits for his fourth multi-hit game in ten games with the Rattlers.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tanner Gillis (2-2, 2.65) is scheduled to start for Wisconsin.  The River Bandits have named Emmanuel Reyes (0-2, 5.71) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:40pm CDT.

Volleyball season begins with multi-match days

Many of the area's volleyball teams will begin their regular season on Tuesday with several matches.

Luxemburg-Casco opens its season at 4 p.m. in Neenah against Appleton North, Bay Port, Freedom, Neenah, and Notre Dame Academy.

Gibraltar travels to a familiar opponent in Peshtigo for a 9 a.m. date with Marinette, Crivitz, Florence, Goodman, Green Bay Southwest, Mercer, and Northwoods.

Southern Door and Sevastopol travel to Bonduel at 3 p.m. to face the host school, Suring, and Crandon.

Packers prep for roster cutdown day

The Green Bay Packers team you saw on the field on Saturday will look very different by the end of today.

The deadline for NFL teams to cut their rosters down to the regular-season limit of 53 players is 3 p.m. on Tuesday. After this deadline, teams will also form their 17-player practice squads and can place players on injured reserve.

Below are the Packers players who have been waived since Saturday's game:

Baker, Kawaan WR South Alabama (0)* PS: STND

Braves, Bays to battle for DCBL championship game

The Door County Baseball League Championship Sunday will be a familiar sight in Kolberg Labor Day weekend after the Braves beat the Mets 10-1 and Sister Bay topped West Jacksonport 3-2.

In Kolberg, the Braves answered the Mets' opening inning run with four of their own, thanks to solo shots from Trevor Reinhardt and Austin Rohe and a two-run single from Sam Koss. The Braves extended their lead with single tallies in six innings, including the final five frames. Reinhardt and Rohe each had three hits and two RBI, while Jack Peterson, Nick LeCaptain, and Koss each had two hits. Four Braves players had multi-RBI games, including three from Koss. Reinhardt earned the win, pitching six innings of shutout ball, scattering five hits while striking out six. Kordell Draves led the Mets with two hits and the team's lone RBI. Seven other Mets tallied at least one hit, with Adam Gustschow slugging the lone extra-base knock. Tory Jandrin took the loss, allowing eight runs (8 ER) on 11 hits while striking out three.

Packers trade for offensive line depth

The Green Bay Packers made a move on Sunday to ensure they have more depth on the offensive line heading into the regular season.

The Packers traded a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for OL Darian Kinnard. According to CBS Sports, Kinnard was a fifth-round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022. Despite his limited roles during his time with the Eagles and the Chiefs, he has accumulated three Super Bowl rings during his brief career.

The Packers are battling depth issues on the line, which became apparent during Sunday's 20-7 win over Seattle. The offensive line allowed more sacks (4) than the team had first downs (3) in the second half.

NFL rosters have to be cut down to 53 men on Tuesday.

Beloit Beats Wisconsin with Ninth Inning Homer

Wilfredo Lara brought the Beloit Sky Carp all the way back on Sunday afternoon at ABC Supply Stadium against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.  Beloit trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but a three-run rally in the eighth and Lara’s two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled the Sky Carp to a 5-4 win over Wisconsin.

Tayden Hall broke the scoreless deadlock with a two-out, solo home run to right in the top of the sixth inning.  Hall fell behind 0-2 in the count against starting pitcher Brandon White.  Hall cracked a long home run to right after working the count full to give the Rattlers (52-66 overall, 18-36 second half) the lead.

Wisconsin added to their lead in the top of the seventh inning.  Josh Adamczewski hit a two-out, two-run double for a 3-0 lead.  Luis Peña followed with an RBI single for the 4-0 advantage.

Beloit (60-59, 30-23) was held scoreless through the first seven innings.  Travis Smith, Stiven Cruz, and Anthony Flores worked the first six innings.  Flores worked two perfect innings with help from an unusual 1-2-3 putout against Aiva Arquette in the sixth.  Arquette hit a grounder back to the mound.  Flores swiped at the ball behind his back and knocked the ball back to catcher Blayberg Diaz at the plate.  Diaz fired to Hall at first in plenty of time for the out.

Yerlin Rodriguez entered in the seventh inning and gave up a lead-off single before getting the next three hitters.

In the bottom of the eighth, Rodriguez walked Lara to start the inning.  Cam Cannarella followed with a single.  Ian Lewis fouled off three two-strike pitches, worked the count full, and doubled to left-center on the ninth pitch of the at bat to drive in two runs.

Aaron Rund replaced Rodriguez and got the first out on a grounder.  Then, Brandon Compton cut the Wisconsin lead to one run with a double to right.  Rund struck out the next two batters to send the game to the ninth.

There was one out in the bottom of the ninth when Rund hit Echedry Vargas to bring Lara to the plate.

Lara was down in the count 1-2 when he hit a popup to foul territory near the warning track by the first base stands.  The ball landed out of the reach of Hall and Lara got a second life.  The next two pitches missed to run the count full.  Lara hit the payoff pitch to left and the ball carried to the Wisconsin bullpen for a walkoff home run.

The Sky Carp needed the win to stay tied with the South Bend Cubs in the second half West Division playoff race.  South Bend had won earlier in the day against Cedar Rapids.  Beloit and the Cubs are both 30-23 in the second half with twelve games remaining in the regular season.  Beloit holds the tie-breaker on South Bend.

The Rattlers have fallen to a season-low fourteen games under .500 after their sixth walkoff loss of the season.

Wisconsin returns to action when they return to Neuroscience Group Field on Tuesday night with a game against the Quad Cities River Bandits.  Manuel Rodriguez (2-4, 2.97) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Vegas Knight Hawks Edge Blizzard for IFL Championship on Final Play

A season defined by offensive fireworks and resilience came down to a single yard for the Green Bay Blizzard. On the game’s final play, quarterback and IFL MVP Max Meylor was stopped at the goal line, sealing a 64-61 victory for the Vegas Knight Hawks in the 2025 IFL National Championship at Tucson Arena.

Kickoff was pushed back to 9:45 p.m. CT, but the late start didn’t cool off either offense. From the opening whistle, it was a back-and-forth battle with neither side holding control for long. Vegas carried a slim 35-33 halftime lead, as both defenses struggled to contain the pace of play.

Green Bay surged ahead in the third quarter, with Meylor continuing to showcase the dual-threat ability that earned him league MVP honors. By the end of the frame, the Blizzard held a 54-50 advantage, setting up a frantic finish.

The fourth quarter delivered on every ounce of drama. Meylor, who finished with multiple touchdown passes and added scores on the ground, leaned on his chemistry with receivers and the bruising short-yardage runs of Kymani “Kimo” Clarke, keeping Green Bay within striking distance. But each time the Blizzard landed a blow, the Knight Hawks answered.

Vegas struck late to retake the lead, and when Green Bay drove the length of the field in the final minute, the stage was set for a storybook finish. On the final snap, Meylor attempted to push across from inside the one-yard line, but the Vegas defense stood tall, denying the score and clinching their first IFL championship.

Jayden De Laura, quarterback of the Vegas Knight Hawks, took home the games MVP award after leading his team to victory.

For the Blizzard, the loss was a gut punch after an otherwise historic season. Meylor’s MVP campaign, totaling 91 touchdowns across the regular season, set the standard for Green Bay’s offense, while Clarke’s consistency on the ground gave balance all year. Yet, in the end, the difference came on defense, just as head coach Corey Roberson had warned in the buildup to the game.

“Championships come down to stops,” Roberson said earlier in the week. “We know we’ll score, but defense is what wins it.”

On Saturday night – and into the early hours of Sunday morning – that proved true, only it was the Knight Hawks who made the stop that mattered most.

Green Bay Finishes Pre-Season Strong Forcing Three Turnovers

After overcoming an early interception from Malik Willis, Green Bay had a strong day forcing three turnovers on defense, a muffed punt, and ending two drives on downs.  They won the battle four to one including a stretch of back-to-back drives ending in forced fumbles recovered by Green Bay and then back-to-back turnovers on downs.

Without Jordan Love, who is working his way back from a minor thumb surgery two weeks back, Malik Willis got another opportunity to start and secure his role as the backup quarterback.

Willis responded after the first drive interception leading a 14 play, 96-yard drive that was capped with a one-yard touchdown pass to Romeo Doubs.

The third-string quarterback is still up in the air, but it seems as though Sean Clifford has won the battle as he was the first option to replace Willis.  He split time in the backfield with Elgersma who grabbed a 121.4 passer rating with six completions on eight attempts and a touchdown. Clifford went 6-9 for 19 yards.

Defensively, Green Bay played well as a team on top of forcing three fumbles they also sacked Seattle’s rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe five times. Isaiah Simmons stood out with seven total tackles, all solo.

No new injuries for the Packers proves to put them in a good position to be ready for their week one matchup with the Detroit Lions on September 7th.

DCBL playoffs kick off Sunday

The Kolberg Braves captured the 2025 Door County Baseball League Regular Season Championship on Sunday at Kolberg, beating the West Jacksonport Ports with a 5-1 game.  The Sister Bay Bays captured second place with a 14-3 win over the Maplewood Mets in 8 innings.

Baileys Harbor upset the three-way tie potential for Washington Island with a 3-1 win over the Islanders. A flip of the coin put the Ports in 3rd to face the Bays and the Mets to face the Braves.

Post-season games start on Sunday, August 24th, with Kolberg hosting Maplewood and Sister Bay hosting West Jacksonport.  Both games begin at 1:30. The postseason championship game will be held on Sunday, August 31st, at a location TBA.

Sky Carp Keep Rattlers in Check

The Beloit Sky Carp defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 2-0 on Saturday night at ABC Supply Stadium.  The Rattlers were held to two hits in the game and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position as they left six runners on base.

Beloit (59-59 overall, 29-23 second half) took the lead with a one-out, solo home run by Chase Jaworsky in the bottom of the second inning.  Jaworsky, who joined the Sky Carp after the Miami Marlins sent Jesús Sánchez to the Houston Astros in a trade on July 31, had hit three homers with the Ashville Tourists in the South Atlantic League.  This homer was his first with Beloit.

That home run was the first allowed by Wisconsin starting pitcher Bishop Letson in 29-2/3 innings this season.  Letson, in his second start since coming off the Wisconsin IL last week, allowed one run on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts over 3-1/3 innings

The Sky Carp added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Sam Garcia, the Rattler reliever, walked Jacob Jenkin-Cowart, the ninth batter in the Beloit order, with two outs.  Garcia had two strikes on Cam Cannarella, a first-round pick of the Marlins in the 2025 draft.  Then, the left-handed Cannarella lined a pitch down the line in left for an RBI double and a 2-0 lead.

Wisconsin (52-65, 18-35) was held to two hits in the game, a one-out single by Jesús Made in the first and a one-out single by Andrew Fischer in the sixth.  Made was wiped out on a double play.  Fischer stole second and was left stranded there.

The Rattlers had other chances in the game.

Beloit starting pitcher Eliazar Dishmey walked Luis Castillo and Andrick Nava with one out in the second.  Dishmey got out of the inning with a strikeout and a grounder to first.  That started a streak of eleven batters in a row retired by Dishmey.  He would leave after five innings after allowing one hit with six strikeouts.

In the seventh, Joey Volini walked Marco Dinges to start the frame.  Luis Castillo grounded into a force play at second and was injured going into first as he hustled down to the line to avoid the double play.  Beloit made a pitching change during the injury delay while Castillo was being helped off the field.  When play resumed, Xavier Meachum was on the mound and Luiyin Alastre was at first as a pinch runner for Castillo.  Meachum walked Nava to put the tying runs on with one out before he got a pair of grounders to end the inning.

In the eighth, Kay-Lan Nicasia was hit by a pitch from Meachum with a wild pitch sending him to second base.  He would stay there for the rest of the inning as Meachum got the next three batters.

Chase Centala denied the Rattlers any thoughts of a comeback in the ninth as he retired the side in order for his sixth save.

Garcia went 5-1/3 innings of relief for the Rattlers.  He allowed a run on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts.

The loss was the second via shutout in this series with the Sky Carp and the fourth time this month an opponent has held the Rattlers scoreless.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon at ABC Supply Stadium.  Travis Smith (1-1, 3.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Beloit is going with Brandon White (7-3, 4.14) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 1:05pm.

Packers host Seahawks for preseason finale

The Green Bay Packers will face the Seattle Seahawks in their final tune-up before finalizing their 53-man roster and getting ready for the regular season opener against the Detroit Lions.

The team's starters will likely be shelved after playing the Seahawks in their joint session on Thursday. Thanks to injuries, the Packers have been a walking MASH unit across their roster. They did bounce back from a lackluster performance against the New York Jets earlier in the month to beat the Indianapolis Colts 23-19 on the road.

The Seahawks doubled up Kansas City 33-16 last week after welcoming former coach Pete Carroll and his Las Vegas Raiders for 23-23 draw.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

Blizzard go for IFL crown in the desert

The Green Bay Blizzard are one win away from their first Indoor Football League Championship in franchise history, with the Vegas Night Hawks standing in their way.

The Blizzard clinched their spot with playoff wins over Tulsa (51-24) and Quad City (71-64), thanks in part to having the league's best offense when it comes to yardage and scoring. The Night Hawks snuck past Bay Area 36-31 and San Diego 74-68 to earn their spot in the title game. The Night Hawks are riding a four-game winning streak into the game and have won seven of their last eight. The Blizzard have won four of their last five games after a two-game stumble in late June.

Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m.

Beloit Beats Wisconsin 4-2

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had chances to come back against the Beloit Sky Carp Friday night at ABC Supply Stadium.  However, a mixture of bad bounces, hard hit balls at fielders, and various other factors denied the Rattlers a win and Beloit did just enough to beat the visitors 4-2.

The Timber Rattlers (52-64 overall, 18-34 second half) grabbed the lead in the top of the third inning.  Tayden Hall had a lead-off triple.  Luiyin Alastre followed with an RBI single for the 1-0 advantage.

Beloit (58-59, 28-23) responded in the bottom of the third inning as they loaded the bases on two singles and a walk to start the frame against Ryan Birchard.  Brandon Compton singled in the tying run.  Cody Schrier put the Sky Carp in front with when he grounded into a force play at second.  Garrett Forrester made it 3-1 with an RBI grounder to short.

Wisconsin had a great chance to do some damage in the top of the sixth.  Josh Adamczewski and Marco Dinges singled to start the inning.  Luis Castillo followed with a grounder to the hole between first and second.  Chase Jaworsky chose to get Dinges at second instead of Castillo at first.  He made the wrong choice.  Everyone was safe and the Rattlers had the bases loaded with no outs trailing 3-1.

Nick Brink, the Beloit starter, kept the damage to a minimum as he got Juan Baez to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.  Adamczewski scored on the play, but the Rattlers were left with a runner at third and two outs.  Brink finished the inning with Hall grounding out to short.  Brink scattered five hits and two walks over his six innings to put himself in line for his seventh win of the season.

The first two innings after Brink left the mound might have made him a little nervous.

In the seventh, Alastre reached on an error by Aiva Arquette to open the frame against reliever Carson Laws.  Alastre stole second with one out, but Laws left him stranded there as Andrew Fischer lined out to center and Arquette handled Luis Peña’s sharp grounder to short for the final two outs.

Adamczewski gave the Rattlers a spark in the top of the eighth with a lead-off double against hard-throwing Juan Reynoso.  Dinges followed with a sharp grounder back to the mound that deflected off Reynoso’s leg toward right field.  Jaworsky got to the ball and threw to first to get Dinges.  Adamczewski tried to catch first baseman Echedry Vargas napping as he raced around third and headed for the plate.  Unfortunately for Adamczewski and the Rattlers, Vargas was ready.  The throw to the plate was on target and in plenty of time for the second out.  Reynoso walked Castillo to extend the inning.  Baez lined the next pitch right to Jaworsky at second base for the final out with the Rattlers still trailing by a run.

Then, the Sky Carp added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth.  Reliever Jesús Broca had the bases loaded with four batters into the eighth after a walk, a force play at second, another walk, and a single.

Jack Seppings was called in from the Wisconsin bullpen to try to keep the deficit at one.  Cam Cannarella had a different idea as he lined a single to left to knock in a run.  Seppings got the final two outs of the inning.

Justin Storm took over for the Sky Carp in the top of the ninth and retired the Rattlers in order for his sixth save of the season.

The teams were a combined 4-for-25 with runners in scoring position.  The Rattlers left seven men on base and went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position as they missed on a chance for their first three-game winning streak of the second half.

The series is even 2-2 with the Sky Carp winning on Tuesday and Friday and the Rattlers coming out victorious on Wednesday and Thursday.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at ABC Supply Stadium.  Bishop Letson (2-0, 1.27) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Eliazar Dishmey (0-0, 3.00) is set to start for the Sky Carp.  Game time is 6:35pm.

Big Late Hits Lead Rattlers to Win

It took the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a while to get their bats going on Thursday night against the Beloit Sky Carp at ABC Supply Stadium.  Once the hits started falling – and the pitching got out of a sticky situation, the Rattlers charged back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Beloit 6-2.

The Sky Carp (57-59 overall, 27-23 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the first.  Chase Jaworsky walked and stole second with one out.  Aiva Arquette drove in Jaworsky with single for a 1-0 lead.

Kay-Lan Nicasia tied the game in the top of the second inning with an RBI double for the Rattlers.

Both teams had a chance to take the lead in the third inning only to have a runner thrown out at the plate.

Josh Adamczewski doubled to start the Wisconsin third and moved to third on a ground ball.  Adamczewski tried to score on a chopper to first by Luis Castillo, but Cody Schrier made a nice play and good throw to the plate for the out.

Jacob Jenkins-Cowart began the Beloit third with a double and also moved to third on a ground ball.  Jaworsky hit a line drive to medium right, and Jenkins-Cowart tried to score after the catch.  However, Luiyin Alastre played it perfectly and fired a strike to the plate to cut down Jenkins-Cowart for the third out of the inning.

Beloit broke the tie in the sixth inning.  Cam Cannarella singled to start the inning but was still at first base with two outs.  Then, Brandon Compton found the gap in right-center for an RBI double to score Cannarella with the go-ahead run.

Tanner Gillis, the Wisconsin starter, was on the hook for the loss despite allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings.

Wisconsin (52-63, 18-33) made sure that didn’t happen.

Castillo started the rally in the top of the eighth with a one-out walk.  He was replaced by pinch-runner Daniel Guilarte.  Tayden Hall kept the inning alive with a two-out walk.  Blayberg Diaz lined a 1-2 pitch to right that was just over the glove of Jenkins-Cowart for a two-run double and Wisconsin’s first lead of the night.

The Sky Carp tested reliever Anthony Flores immediately in the bottom of the eighth.  A hit batsman and consecutive walks loaded the bases with no outs.  That brought Aiva Arquette, a first-round pick of the Miami Marlins from the 2025 draft to the plate.  Flores struck out Arquette looking for the first out.

Compton, a second-round pick of the Marlins in this year's draft, was next and he grounded into an inning-ending 5-6-3 double play.

The Rattlers added to their lead in the top of the ninth.  Guilarte singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs.  Alastre added another RBI single for the 6-2 lead.

Aaron Rund closed out the game with a 1-2-3 ninth for Wisconsin’s second straight win over the Sky Carp.

Game four of the series is Friday night at ABC Supply Stadium.  Ryan Birchard (3-7, 4.16) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Beloit has named Nick Brink (6-4, 3.22) as their starter.  Game time is 6:05pm.

Rattlers Bounce Back with Win at Beloit

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers bounced back from a 5-0 defeat on Tuesday night to beat the Beloit Sky Carp 7-5 at ABC Supply Stadium on Wednesday.  The Rattlers built a big lead behind a fine pitching performance from Manuel Rodriguez and long two-run homers by Luis Castillo and Jesús Made but had to hold off a late Beloit rally to snap a four-game losing streak.

The Timber Rattlers (51-63 overall, 17-32 second half) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning.  Josh Adamczewski knocked in Luis Peña from second base with a two-out single.  That hit was Adamczewski’s first hit as a Timber Rattler after his promotion from the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday.

Castillo followed with a tape-measure home run to right-center for a 3-0 lead.  The ball cleared the protective netting and hit the roof of a concession stand on the concourse beyond the wall.  The homer was his second of the season.

Made added to the Timber Rattlers advantage in the top of the fifth with a two-run home run to right.  His ball hit way up on the protective netting for his second home since joining the Rattlers on August 5.

Wisconsin made it 7-0 in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Andrick Nava to send Adamczewski home.  Nava scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Rodriguez was sharp after he had allowed six runs in each of his last two starts for the Rattlers.  He retired the first ten batters he faced before Dillon Head singled with one out in the fourth.  Rodriguez pitched five innings, walked one, and struck out ten while allowed one hit and no runs to put himself in position for the win.

Beloit (57-58, 27-22) made it interesting in the late innings.

Patricio Aquino relieved Rodriguez for the sixth inning and set down the Sky Carp in order.  He also got the first batter in the seventh.  Then, four straight singles and a balk plated three runs.  Brandon Compton and Ian Lewis started the rally with the first two singles.  Chase Jaworsky followed with a single to drive in Compton.  A poor throw in with Lewis racing around to third allowed Jaworsky to take second base.  Aquino balked to let Lewis score.  Garret Forrester completed the sequence with another single.

Aquino ended the inning with a 4-6-3 double play.

Yerlin Rodriguez entered the game in the bottom of the eighth and promptly loaded the bases.  There was a lead-off walk.  Made was charged with two errors on a potential double play ball with a bobble and a poor throw to first.  Then, another walk brought Aiva Arquette, a first-round pick of the Miami Marlins in the 2025 draft to the plate.  Rodriguez got him to ground into a 4-6-3 double play with a run scoring to make it 7-4.  The inning ended on a strikeout.

Stiven Cruz came on in the bottom of the ninth and quickly retired the first two batters.  Forrester extended the game with a single and took second on defensive indifference.  Connor Caskenette cut further into Wisconsin’s lead with an RBI single.  Cruz collected himself and his first save of the season by striking out Wilfredo Lara on three pitches to end the game.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at ABC Supply Stadium.  Tanner Gillis (2-2, 2.61) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers.  Luke Lashutka (0-3, 3.72) has been named as the starting pitcher for the Sky Carp.  Game time is 6:05pm.

Beloit Shuts Out Wisconsin

A quartet of Beloit Sky Carp pitchers combined on a three-hit, shutout of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in a 5-0 win on Tuesday night at ABC Supply Stadium.  Beloit pitchers had sixteen strikeouts and walked one as they continued a push for a playoff spot.

Beloit (57-57 overall, 27-21 second half) took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Echedry Vargas.  The rally started on a lead-off walk to Wilson Weber and a bunt single by Ian Lewis.  Cody Schrier hit a grounder up the middle that was flagged down by Jesús Made, whose only play was first base.  Vargas singled to right to score Weber, but Lewis was out at the plate as he tried to score.

Wisconsin (50-63, 16-32) could do almost nothing against Karson Milbrandt, the Sky Carp starter.  Luis Peña had a two-out single in the first inning.  Marco Dinges had a lead-off walk in the fifth.  Milbrandt struck out ten over five scoreless innings.

Travis Smith, the Rattlers starting pitcher, had that one hiccup in the second inning as the only run he allowed.  Smith left the game after retiring the first batter he faced in the sixth.  He allowed one run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Sky Carp extended their lead in the sixth and seventh innings against Jack Seppings.  Aiva Arquette, the first batter Seppings faced, singled, stole second, and scored on a triple by Brandon Compton.  Weber sent a grounder back to the mound, but the ball deflected off the glove of Seppings to Luis Peña.  The only play for Peña was to first base for the second out of the inning and Compton scored for a 3-0 lead.

Arquette put the game all but out of reach in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run double for a 5-0 lead.

Relievers Joey Volini and Juan Reynoso combined for five strikeouts over three perfect innings of relief for Beloit.

In the top of the ninth, Daniel Guilarte and Andrew Fischer singled against Justin Storm for Wisconsin’s first hits since the first inning.  That sequence also put runners at the corners with no outs as the Rattlers tried to avoid their sixth shutout of the season.  Storm retired Made and Peña on popups before striking out Josh Adamczewski to end the game.

Beloit stayed tied with the South Bend Cubs at the top of the second half West Division race as the Cubs beat Cedar Rapids 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning at Four Winds Field on Tuesday.

The Rattlers offense set a new high for strikeouts in a game with sixteen.  Their previous high of fifteen was set on May 6 at Peoria.  Wisconsin has fallen to a season-low thirteen games under .500 for the season.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at ABC Supply Stadium.  Manuel Rodriguez (1-4, 3.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers.  Noble Meyer (1-4, 4.61) is set to start for Beloit.  Game time is 6:05pm.

Packers Eager for Regular Season as Camp Winds Down

If you’re itching to watch regular season football again, host tailgate parties, and dive into your Green and Gold, then cornerback Keisean Nixon is your guy. In camp, he’s stepped into the CB1 role, previously held by Jaire Alexander, who departed this offseason. Nixon says he’s ready to prove himself and match up with NFC North rival Detroit in Week 1, adding, “I’m ready to get to really playing football.”

His eagerness mirrors what many players and fans feel as training camp winds down. There have been a handful of strong battles, especially in 1-on-1 drills, but coach Matt LaFleur loves the passion though he’s quick to check players when tempers flare, as we saw earlier in camp.

While the injury report remains lengthy, key players are making their way back. Jordan Love returned from a minor hand procedure, continuing 7-on-7 reps similar to Monday. Kenny Clark and Lukas Van Ness also returned to practice Tuesday after receiving rest Monday.

Kicker Brandon McManus enjoyed a rest day and took on a different role, donning stripes as an official during practice, while backup McNamee rebounded from Saturday’s game by connecting on all six attempts.

The Packers are keeping things loose yet focused as they build toward their joint practice with Seattle and the final preseason game this weekend before Detroit week one.

Luxemburg-Casco, Sturgeon Bay head to conference golf meets Tuesday

The area's two girls' golf programs go back to work on Tuesday with conference meets.

DCBL Round-Up: Kolberg wins regular-season crown

The Door County Baseball League Playoffs are set after the final Sunday of the regular season, when all four home teams earned victories.

Kolberg earned the top spot in the field as the regular season champions with a 5-1 win over West Jacksonport. The Braves' Trevor Reinhardt won the mound while helping his cause with a pair of hits. The Braves outhit the Ports 8-3 in the victory, with Austin Rohe and Austen Dart each clubbing doubles.

Sister Bay will be the two-seed after knocking off Maplewood 14-3. The Bays took control of the game late, scoring four times in the sixth inning and five more times in the seventh to put the game on ice an inning early. Chubs Laughlin, Spencer Krause, Stew Larsen, Matt Hecht, and Casey Wedding all had two hits, while Sawyer Johnson went 3-5 with three RBI. Tom Sawyer, Johnson, and Hecht all had doubles in the win. Jaden Dillar, Nolan Wagner, and Zach Marchant posted multi-hit games while Kordell Draves homered for the Mets in the loss.

A six-run third inning helped accelerate Egg Harbor to a 12-0 win over Institute. Cole Frangipiane homered, and Nick Kita doubled to help Brady Kita to his first win as a pitcher for the Indians. Cory Fuller, Nick Kita, and Frangipiane all had two hits while Brady Kita, Frangipiane, and Nick Posh had multi-RBI games. The Cubs' top of the order put pressure on the Indians as Nick Peterson and Sam Zirbel combined to go 5-9.

Errors Prove Fatal to Wisconsin

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers fans will be happy to see Kendall George and the Great Lakes Loons leave town.  George didn’t steal a base on Sunday but had an impact on the game with three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored to lead the Loons to a much-needed, 5-3, comeback win over the Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field on Sunday afternoon.  Wisconsin committed three errors in the game that led to a pair of unearned runs.

The Timber Rattlers (50-62 overall, 16-31 second half) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Andrew Fischer walked, Jesús Made doubled, and Marco Dinges walked to load the bases with no outs.  Then, Luis Castillo tripled to right with the bases loaded to give Wisconsin a 3-0 lead.  The could not add to the lead despite chasing Loons starting pitcher Aidan Foeller in the inning.

Great Lakes (63-29, 29-18) got two runs in the top of the third on four hits and a walk.  Three of the hits were infield singles against reliever Jesús Broca.  Back-to-back scratch singles that didn’t leave the infield grass with an error by Broca put runners on the corners to start the inning.  Kendall George followed with a single to left to drive in the first run of the inning.  Broca got a strikeout for the first out of the inning before another infield single loaded the bases.  Zyhir Hope drew a walk to force in a run before Broca got the final two outs to maintain the lead.

The Loons tied the game in the top of the seventh.  Reliever Aaron Rund, who had pitched a scoreless sixth, gave up a lead-off single to Frank Rodriguez and walked George.  Rund was replaced by Anthony Flores.

Flores got Samuel Munoz to send a weak grounder to Juan Baez at second base.  Baez rushed a throw to second in an attempt to get the force at second on the speedy George.  However, the throw was wild, and Rodriguez scored the tying run.

The duo of Rodriguez and George combined to give the Loons the lead in the top of the eighth.  Flores had two outs with none on when Rodriguez doubled off the wall in left for his fourth hit of the game.  George followed with a line drive to the gap in left for a triple.  A wild throw to third from Jesús Made went into the Great Lakes dugout and George scored on the error, Wisconsin’s third of the game, for a 5-3 lead.

George went 9-for-23 with two triples, six walks, eight runs scored, and fourteen stolen bases as he played all six games of the series.

Wisconsin had two hits after the first inning as the Loons ran through seven pitchers.  Made, whose double in the first inning extended his hitting streak to nine games, doubled in the fifth inning with two outs.  He has six multi-hit games in eleven games as a Rattler.

The other Wisconsin hit was a lead-off single by Andrick Nava in the bottom of the ninth against Alex Makarevich.  However, Nava was left stranded at first when the game ended as Makarevich retired the next three hitters to record his first save of the season.

Bishop Letson made his return to the mound for the Rattlers for the first time since May 8.  Letson was activated from the Wisconsin IL earlier in the day on Sunday and went 1-1/3 scoreless innings with two hits, no walks and two strikeouts.

Great Lakes claimed the series 4-2 by winning the final three games from Wisconsin.  The teams split the twelve-game season series with each team winning six games.

The Loons win allowed them to move to within a half game of Lake County in the East Division second half playoff race.  The Captains lost in ten innings to Peoria on Sunday afternoon to let Great Lakes pick up ground.

Karl Morrin, the superintendent at Wautoma, presided over today's first meeting of the 2025-26 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control.

The Board conducted its 2025-26 officer elections. Brian Nadeau, the Ellsworth School District superintendent, will serve as the president-elect. Jill Stobber, athletics and activities administrator at Waterford High School, was re-elected to the role of treasurer.  In addition, Ted Knutson, president at Aquinas, was introduced as a new member, returning to the Board after serving from 2012 to 19.

Among the action items approved by the Board was the 2025-26 operational budget, various membership committee and employee handbooks, the 2025-26 Media Policies Reference Guide, an amendment to the existing agreement with the NFHS?Network, the annual renewal of the WIAA’s membership in the National Federation of State High School Associations, as well as the general financial reports.

Final regular season Sunday in store for Door County Baseball League

On the final day of the rain-lengthened regular season, five teams are battling for four spots in the Door County Baseball League Playoffs.

Sunday's slate was initially scheduled for June 8th before rain canceled all four games.

Kolberg could clinch the DCL regular-season title with a win over West Jacksonport at home. That could cause some anxiety for the Ports and their fans, who are likely keeping an eye on Washington Island's trip to Baileys Harbor and Maplewood's visit to Sister Bay. An Islanders win and losses by the Mets and Ports would set up a three-way tie for third place. The Bays could also set up a tie at the top of the standings with a win and a Braves loss. Institute travels to Egg Harbor for the other game on the schedule. All four games will start at 1:30 p.m.

STANDINGS

Kolberg 10-3

Bays 9-4

Maplewood 8-5

Ports 8-5

Island 7-6

Baileys Harbor 6-7

Egg Harbor 4-9

Institute 0-13

Loons Fly Past Timber Rattlers

A pitchers’ duel between two of the top strikeout artists in the Midwest League turned sour for the home team with a loss of control in the sixth inning.   The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers dropped a 7-0 decision to the Great Lakes Loons on Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field.

The game was scoreless through five innings as both starting pitchers were on their game.  Ryan Birchard, the Rattlers starter, allowed one hit, walked one, hit one, and struck out five over his first five innings.  Adam Serwinowski, the starter for the Loons, gave up two hits, walked three, hit one, and struck out six over his first five innings.

The Loons (62-49 overall, 28-18 second half) pounced in the fifth inning as Birchard walked Carlos Rojas, the catcher and ninth hitter in the batting order, to start the inning.  Kendall George, the league leader in stolen bases, hit a grounder to first for a force play at second and turned the inning into a track meet with a test of patience.  George stole second and third with Samuel Munoz at the plate.  Then, Birchard walked Munoz and that was all for the Rattlers starting pitcher.

Yerlin Rodriguez entered the game as the reliever for the Rattlers and Munoz stole second before Rodiguez walked Eduardo Quintero to load the bases.  Rodriguez followed that with a walk of Zyhir Hope to force in George with the first run of the game.

Logan Wagner laced a double to left, the only hit of the inning, to drive in two runs.  Fortunately for the Rattlers, Hope was thrown out at the plate and the deficit was only three runs.  Then, Rodriguez threw a wild pitch with Jake Gelof at the plate to let Wagner take third.  A passed ball on catcher Marco Dinges on ball four to Gelof allowed Wagner to score for a 4-0 lead.

The Rattlers (50-61, 16-30) threatened Serwinowski in the sixth inning as Dinges walked with one out and Alastre was hit with two outs.  The Loons called for a pitching change.  Serwinowski left the mound at almost the exact moment the crowd of 6,040 roared their approval of Andruw Monasterio’s three-run homer in the eleventh inning to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 6-3 lead in Cincinnati that propelled the Brewers to a franchise-record fourteenth consecutive win.  Serwinowski acknowledged the fans as he walked to his dugout to see how the action on the field would unfold with Joel Ibarra taking over on the mound to face Luis Castillo.

Castillo singled to left and Dinges tried to score from second on the play.  Munoz made a strong throw to the plate and Dinges was the third out of the inning.

Great Lakes was not done as they took advantage of more Rattler miscues in the top of the eighth.  Stiven Cruz walked two batter in the frame but had two outs with runners at first and second.  Elijah Hainline singled to right and Alastre’s throw to the plate was late.  Dinges tried to throw behind Hainline at first base, but the throw sailed to foul territory in right field to allow the other runner on base and Hainline to score for a 7-0 lead.

Wisconsin had one base runner over the final three innings, a two-out walk drawn by Dinges in the eighth inning.  Saturday night was the fifth time Wisconsin was shutout this season.

Timber Rattlers pitchers allowed just three hits and struck out eleven but walked ten as Great Lakes kept the pressure on with eight stolen bases.  George was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts on Saturday to give him 82 on the season.  He is14-for-14 in steals in the first five games of the series.

Serwinowski was the winning pitcher.  He is 2-0 with the Loons after starting the season 1-7 with the Dayton Dragons before making his way to the Los Angeles Dodgers system in a trade on July 31.  He struck out six on Saturday night to run his league-leading total to 112.

Birchard surpassed 100 strikeouts for the season on Saturday night as he racked up five to give him 104 in 2025.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Bishop Letson (2-0, 1.33) is scheduled to make the start for the Timber Rattlers.  Great Lakes plans to have Aidan Foeller make his Midwest League debut as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Sean Clifford Leads Packers Comeback Against Colts

In a game the Green Bay Packers never led until the 1:31 mark in the fourth quarter, third string quarterback Sean Clifford (8-13, 97 yards, 1 rushing TD) led a comeback drive that was capped off with an 11-yard keeper for the go-ahead score, putting the Packers finally on top, and it would stay that way, 23-19.

Erasing deficits is nothing new to Green Bay, as they started behind against the New York Jets last week as well with a similar story line, a lot of penalties, and few explosive plays. However, without their starting QB Jordan Love and RB Josh Jacobs, the offense was focused on spreading out the ball and seeing what young guys could do.

A spark came in the second half from Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma (6-10, 74 yards, 1 TD), who is competing with Clifford for the third-string position. He led the Green Bay offense to their first possession inside the red zone midway through the third quarter. Elgersma, with the support of tailbacks Israel Abanikanda (9 carries, 38 yards) and Amar Johnson (6 carries, 24 yards, 1 TD), completed two scoring drives including an impressive 18-yard crossing route to Cornelius Johnson (3 catches, 41 yards) on fourth-and-3 early in the fourth quarter, which set up Johnson's score later in the drive.

No starters played, and most didn't warm up for Green Bay due to an extensive injury list already, and it got longer after Saturday's game. Safety Omar Brown, who had a standout game last week against the Jets, sustained a chest injury that LaFleur called "scary," and will stay in Indianapolis for at least one night. Additionally, rookie Barryn Sorrell left the game with a knee injury, and Marshawn Llyod was slow to recover after a big hit on the sidelines following a long run-after-catch in the first half.

Overall, it was a much better performance than last week's game against New York, but there is still much improvement to be made, especially getting out of the gates early and not holding themselves back with penalties. One more preseason game awaits before every game holds a purpose towards the chase of another trophy in Titletown.

Loons Barrage Beats Wisconsin

The Great Lakes Loons hit four homers out of their sixteen hits on Friday night to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 16-5 at Neuroscience Group Field. The offensive onslaught spoiled the evening for a season-high crowd of 6,673 fans.

The Loons (61-49 overall, 27-18 second half) took the lead in the first inning. Kendall George bunted back to the mound on the first pitch of the game. However, starting pitcher Sam Garcia’s throw to first was wide of the bag and George reached base. Eduardo Quintero followed with a two-run home run.

Wisconsin (50-60, 16-29) rallied past the Loons with some early offense. Jesús Made started the bottom of the first with a single. Andrew Fischer singled with one out. Then, Luiyin Alastre doubled to left to score Made. In the second, Luis Peña stepped to the box with two on and two out after Great Lakes botched a potential inning-ending double play ball. Peña launched a long home run to left, his third homer since joining the Rattlers on August 5, to take a 4-2 lead.

The lead was short-lived. Garcia got the first out in the top of the third but lost George on a 3-2 pitch to issue a free pass to the league leader in stolen bases. George stole second with Quintero at the plate to get into scoring position before showing off his speed in another way.

George was running on a pitch that Quintero hit for a routine grounder to Peña at short. George was nearly to third base by the time Peña fielded the ball. Peña checked third as George slowed around third before throwing to first base for the out on Quintero. George turned on the jets again as the ball was in the air to first to head for the plate. He beat first baseman Tayden Hall’s throw to the plate by a lot to score the run.

The next three batters reached as Zyhir Hope walked, Logan Wagner double him home to tie the game, and Jake Gelof hit another two-run home run to give the Loons a 6-4 lead. That home run was Gelof’s fourth two-run home run in the last three days. He had hit two on Wednesday and one on Thursday.

Elijah Hainline added to the lead with a lead-off home run in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Wisconsin had a chance to come back from the 7-4 lead. Fischer doubled and Alastre singled to start the inning. Blayberg Diaz doubled with one out to score Fischer, but Alastre was thrown out at the plate for the second out. The Rattlers would not score again.

That would not be the case for Great Lakes. The Loons added a run in the sixth when Hainline scored from second on an error in center after a single by Carlos Rojas; four runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Hope and a three-run home run by Wagner; and a run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Quintero.

In the ninth, Wisconsin turned to catcher Victor Torres and Great Lakes scored three runs on four hits to cap their evening at sixteen runs on sixteen hits.

There were a few offensive highlights for the Rattlers.

Made went 2-for-5 with a double to extend his current hitting streak to six games. He is 13-for-30 during the streak. Made also has five multi-hit games in nine games with Wisconsin.

Fischer, in his second game as a professional, also went 2-for-5 with a double. He is 5-for-9 in two games with the Rattlers.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field. Ryan Birchard (3-6, 4.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Adam Serwinowski is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA since coming over to the Loons after a trade deadline deal between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds.

Rockers erase deficit to capture Northwoods crown

Trailing 8-4 in the back end of its winner-take-all game, the Green Bay Rockers came back to beat the Duluth Huskies 10-8 to win their second Northwoods League Championship in three years.

The Rockers scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings only to watch the Huskies match them in the fourth inning and add six runs in the fifth inning to take the 8-4 advantage. They would whittle away at the advantage in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Collin Helms to make it 8-5. The Rockers scored three times in the eighth inning to tie the game thanks to a pair of sacrifice fly balls and a bases-loaded walk. The difference was a pair of unearned runs in the ninth inning with Stefan Di Corrado singling in the insurance run.

Max Humphrey, Helms, Joe Mennella, Xaige Lancaster, and Payton Mansfield all had two hits in the win as the Rockers outhit the host Huskies 14-9. They also played mistake-free baseball, while two Huskies' errors proved to be fatal. Drew Aguiar pitched the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit while striking out four, including the championship-clinching punchout to end the game.

Casco comes up short in Shoreland League Championship game

For the second year in a row, the Casco Athletics found heartbreak in the Shoreland League Championship Series, losing to Denmark on Thursday 1-0 in 10 innings.

The Athletics had their chances, piling up six hits and drawing three walks across the 10 innings. Their best chance came in the second inning when they loaded the bases with no outs, only to walk away from the frame scoreless. They had at least one base runner in the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings, but could not get the necessary break to push a run across. The Devilbears finally prevailed in the top of the tenth when Ethan Ovsak clubbed his third hit of the game for a double and came around to score after Jaycob Dittmer singled and an error by outfielder Patrick Daniels allowed both baserunners to advance.

Owen Deprez led the A's with three hits while Mitch Jandrin, Kyle Routhieaux, and Trevor Reinhardt each had one. Cole Bzdawka was the hard-luck pitcher for the A's, allowing one run (1 ER) on seven hits while striking out eight. Devilbears pitchers, Logan Paplham and Reece Piontek combined to strike out 16 batters while shutting out the A's.

Packers face Colts in second preseason game

The Green Bay Packers' residency in Indianapolis will conclude on Saturday with a preseason matchup against the Colts.

The Packers' starters will likely sit this one out thanks to a combination of an injury-plagued training camp and their joint practice against the Colts on Thursday. The team would like to get the taste out of its mouth from last weekend's 30-10 loss to the New York Jets, which saw the offense sputter and the defense struggle. The Packers' quarterbacks threw for less than 70 net yards on the night as the offense struggled to get 200 yards.  The Colts would also like to forget about their 24-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens last week.

The two teams will play at noon Saturday.

Wild Win For Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers got contributions from everyone as they rallied with five two-out runs in the bottom of the eighth inning upend the Great Lakes Loons 8-6 on Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Andrew Fischer, the #1 pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2025 draft who happened to be playing his first game as a professional, led the way with three hits and three RBI for the Rattlers. Jesús Made stayed hot with three hits, too.

The top four hitters in the Wisconsin lineup are all Top Ten prospects in the Brewers system and all four contributed to giving the Rattlers (50-59 overall, 16-28 second half) a 2-0 lead.  Made (#1) and Luis Peña (#2) had back to back singles.  Fischer (#6) made his professional at bat count with an RBI single to knock in Made and send Peña to third base.  Marco Dinges (#10) followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the second inning, Luis Castillo emerged from a terrible slump with a bolt from the blue.  The Rattler left fielder had been 1-for-39 in his first twelve games off the injured list.  Everyone forgot about that when he crushed a 2-2 pitch deep into the night over the Home Run Porch for his first Midwest League home run and a 3-0 lead.  The power shouldn’t have been a surprise as Castillo had hit eighteen in the Carolina League last season.

That three-run lead evaporated in the top of the third inning as the some of the top prospects in the Los Angeles Dodgers system delivered key hits.  Kendal George (#25) singled with one out to move Jordan Thompson, who had doubled to start the inning, to third base.  Zyhir Hope (#2) was at the plate when George stole second.  A wild throw from Dinges allowed Thompson to score.  Hope followed that with an RBI single.

Jake Gelof, who hit a pair of two-run homers on Wednesday afternoon, launched another one on a 1-2 pitch for a 4-3 lead.  That was the first home run given up by Wisconsin starting pitcher Tanner Gillis this season.  He had gone 45 innings over ten starts without giving up a homer.

The game settled down after that home run before things got crazy in the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, Made just beat out a double play ball with Peña and Fischer drawing walks on eight straight pitches to load the bases with one out.  However, Dinges swung at a 2-0 pitch and grounded into a 4-3 double play to end the inning.

Then, the Loons (60-49, 26-18) extended their lead with two runs in the top of the eighth.  Aaron Rund gave up a walk and a single to start the inning.  Elijah Hainline attempted to bunt the runners over and it turned out much better for Great Lakes as the throw to third was late to load the bases for Samuel Munoz.

Rund fell behind Munoz 2-1 before getting a called strike to even the count.  Then, a marathon battle began.  Munoz fouled off three pitches before taking ball three to run the count full.  Rund tried everything in his arsenal, but Munoz fouled off seven more pitches.  The fifteenth pitch of the battle was a close pitch that was called ball four to force in a run and leave the Loons with the bases loaded, no outs, and a 5-3 lead.

Rund got a strikeout and a force out at the plate from the next two batters.  However, a wild pitch allowed an extra run to score before the final out was recorded, and the Rattlers faced a 6-3 deficit heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Hedbert Pérez started the inning with a single to right, but he was still at first with two outs and Logan Tabeling, the Loons reliever looking to get the final out.  The final out would not happen for an eternity.

Castillo walked on four pitches to bring Daniel Guilarte to the plate.  The Rattlers number nine hitter in the order was in the box as Tabeling stepped on the rubber and dropped the ball out of his glove for a balk to move both runners into scoring position.  Guilarte lined a single to right to score both of them, cut the Loons lead to one, and bring the top of the order back to the plate.

Made kept the inning going with a single for his third hit of the game.

Peña lined a double off the wall in left to knock in Guilarte with the tying run.

Fischer sent a week grounder to the right side of the infield.  First baseman Cameron Decker fielded the ball but flipped too high to Tabeling covering first.  Both Made and Peña scored on Fischer’s third hit of the night for an 8-6 lead.

Jeferson Figueroa went out for the top of the ninth.  Momentum seemed to shift to the Loons side after Figueroa walked George and Hope to start the inning.  Then, fate smiled on the Rattlers.

Logan Wagner hit a weak line drive near the third base bag.  Fischer dove for the ball but could not hang on to it.  The ball trickled to the coach’s box.  Fischer scrambled to get it and lunge back to the bag to force George on a close play.  Hope was late to break for second base because of the possibility that Fischer could have caught it.  Fischer’s throw to Peña at second was in time for the 5-4 double play and the Rattlers were one out away from the win.

Gelof was standing in the way of that win as he stood in the box as the tying run.  Figueroa closed out the game with a strikeout and the Rattlers celebrated the improbable comeback win.

Made went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to six games.  He is 11-for-25 during this stretch.

Game four of the series is set for Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Sam Garcia (1-8, 5.22) is the announced starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Maddux Bruns (2-3, 6.98) is set to start for the Loons.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Casco goes for title sweep Thursday after win Wednesday

Casco kept its season alive Wednesday night with a 6-5 win over Denmark, forcing a decisive game three in the Shoreland League Championship Series tonight at 7:30 p.m.

The game ebbed and flowed all night with both teams trading blows through the first six innings. The A's responded to an early deficit in the first inning with two runs of their own, only to see the Devilbears respond with a two-run rally. The A's scored in the third and fourth innings to take a short-lived lead as the Devilbears responded with single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings. The A's would take the lead for good with a two-run rally in the seventh inning on a homer by Trevor Reinhardt, matching teammate Mitch Jandrin's two-run shot from the first inning. The Devilbears put the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth before Noah Lindsley finished the job with his sixth strikeout of the game.

Reinhardt went 3-4 with two RBI, while Blake Robillard also posted a multi-hit game. Jandin, Reinhardt, Robillard, and Owen Deprez all drove in runs for the A's to force game three.

Packers add wide receiver ahead of Colts practice

The Green Bay Packers will address their slowly diminishing wide receiver room with a new face.

The Packers announced on Wednesday that they claimed WR Kawaan Baker off waivers from the Las Vegas Raiders. Baker is not a stranger to the Packers, spending some time with the team in 2022. According to Packers.com, Baker was with the New England Patriots for the 2024 offseason and training camp and was with the Las Vegas Raiders for part of this year's training camp.

The Packers will practice in Indianapolis on Thursday before playing the Colts in an exhibition game on Saturday.

Rockers meet Huskies in Northwoods League Championship

It all comes down to one game for the Green Bay Rockers as they travel to Duluth to face the Huskies in the Northwoods League Championship game.

The Rockers captured the Great Lakes Division title on Tuesday with a sweep of the Wausau Woodchucks, then traveled to Traverse City on Tuesday night and took down the Pit Spitters 10-5 to capture the Divisional Championship. Eli Selga led the charge, going 4-for-6 with two RBIs, while Max Humphrey added a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI. In a postseason often defined by the long ball, Green Bay scored all 10 of its runs without hitting a home run — and took advantage of five unearned runs to pad the lead. On the mound, the Rockers were equally dominant. Starter Bryce Leonard tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. The bullpen trio of Miranda, Alexander, and Aguiar closed the door, combining to give up only one earned run over the final four innings.

The Huskies punched their ticket to the championship game after sweeping the LaCrosse Loggers and winning the Great Plains title with a dominating 4-1 win over Mankato on Wednesday.

The game will take place at Duluth's Wade Stadium at 6:35 p.m.

Great Lakes Fast Start Stops Rattlers

The Great Lakes Loons were up 4-0 five batters into Wednesday’s game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field.  While the Rattlers got close, the Loons went on to a 7-4 win to even the series at 1-1.

Kendal George, the Midwest League leader in stolen bases, singled, stole second, and stole third to start the game for the Loons (60-48 overall, 26-17 second half).  Eduardo Quintero drove in George with a single for a 1-0 lead.   Then, Quintero stole second.  A one-out double by Logan Wagner scored Quintero.  Jake Gelof followed with a two-run homer to left and Loons were up 4-0 before the Rattlers had a chance to hit.

Wisconsin (49-59, 15-28) made the most of their opportunity at the plate in the first two innings and it was Jesús Made contributing from the lead-off spot in both innings.  Made singled to start the bottom of the first.  He had an easy jog around the bases when Marco Dinges crushed a one-out homer to the Rattlers bullpen.

In the bottom of the second, Daniel Guilarte singled with one out.  Made ripped a line drive to the corner in right for an RBI triple to pull the Rattlers to within a run.  However, Made would be left stranded at third when the inning ended.

Gelof pushed the Loons lead back out to three in the third inning when he launched his second two-run home run of the game.

The Rattlers had the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Luis Castillo walked with one out and Luis Peña singled with two outs.  A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position with Dinges at the plate.  However, a close 2-2 pitch was called strike to end the opportunity for Wisconsin.

That out started a streak of thirteen consecutive Rattlers batters retired by Great Lakes pitching.  Wisconsin’s bullpen matched the Loons relievers as Jack Seppings and Anthony Flores both worked two scoreless innings.

George was a one-man rally in the top of the ninth to give Great Lakes an insurance run in the top of the ninth.  He beat out a potential double play ball to reach base with one out on a fielder’s choice, stole his third base of the game, and went to third on an error.  A wild pitch that didn’t get too far from catcher Andrick Nava, was far enough for George to sprint home for a 7-3 lead.  George has 72 stolen bases on the season.

Luiyin Alastre singled to start the Wisconsin ninth inning before Christian Ruebeck closed out the game with three straight strikeouts.

Made went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI to extend his hitting streak to five games.  He is 8-for-20 during the streak.

Game three of the series is Thursday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tanner Gillis (2-2, 2.08) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Great Lakes has named Brooks Auger (3-7, 5.53) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Green Bay Continues Hot Playoff Run, Advances to Championship

After an up-and-down finish to the regular season, the Green Bay Rockers have caught fire at just the right time. They opened the Northwoods League Playoffs with a sweep of the Wausau Woodchucks, then traveled to Traverse City on Tuesday night and took down the Pit Spitters 10-5 to capture the Divisional Championship.

The Rockers wasted no time seizing control, jumping out to a 10-0 lead by the seventh inning. Their offense exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh, stretching an already comfortable margin.

Green Bay is chasing its second championship in three years after defeating St. Cloud for the title in 2023. Their opponent for the championship matchup Thursday will be decided tonight when the Duluth Huskies and Mankato MoonDogs meet in the Great Plains Divisional Championship.

Nagging Injuries Piling Up, Love Undergoes Surgery

After a controversial decision by Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur to start Jordan Love against the Jets in the preseason opener Saturday, the worst-case scenario has come true. Love sustained an injury to his non-throwing hand thumb which will require surgery, but early reports suggest he will be ready for Week 1.

Green Bay is no stranger to being without their franchise quarterback, as Malik Willis started in place of Love after he went down with a knee injury in Week 1 of the 2024-25 season. Willis led the Packers to victory in both games.

Love isn’t the only Packer who will miss key preseason time. The injury list includes WR Jayden Reed (foot), All-Pro S Xavier McKinney (calf), CB Nate Hobbs (knee), and WR Dontayvion Wicks (calf).

WR Romeo Doubs also went down in yesterday’s practice and was examined by trainers, but was able to walk off under his own power.

Some positive news came today when GM Brian Gutekunst announced WR Christian Watson, who tore his ACL last season, will start this year on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list. He is on track to start practicing following clearance in Week 4, ideally making him game-ready by midseason when temperatures begin to drop at Lambeau.

As the second preseason game approaches, Green Bay is looking to shake the injury bug and clean up miscues from last week’s matchup with the Jets. A strong force will be the continued development of LB Edgerrin Cooper, who had an explosive day finishing with an interception of Malik Willis, a blown up screenplay to Emanuel Wilson and a sack of fourth-string QB Taylor Elgersma.

Tomorrow is an off day for the Packers before the Indianapolis Colts venture to town for a joint practice Thursday and preseason game Saturday.

Packers training camp travels to Indianapolis

The Green Bay Packers are in Indianapolis for the rest of the week as they prepare for their preseason test against the Colts.

The Packers took Wednesday off to travel to Indianapolis for their joint practice against the Colts on Thursday. The Packers are coming off a humbling 30-10 loss to the New York Jets. Penalties were a major issue. Flags flew often on both sides of the ball, killing drives and giving the Jets extra chances to extend theirs.

The Packers and the Colts will play each other at noon on Saturday.

Casco looks to keep season alive against Denmark

Two potential home games could help Casco win a Shoreland League Championship if they can erase a 1-0 series deficit to the Denmark Devilbears beginning on Wednesday.

The Athletics outhit the Devilbears 5-2 on Monday, but it was an error that pushed across the game's first run in the seventh inning when Hayden Konkol scored from second. Two errors in the eighth helped the Devilbears score their insurance run as they went on to win 2-0. The three errors spoiled a strong performance from Collin Lacey, who allowed the two runs (0 ER) on one hit, striking out seven along the way. Kyle Routhieaux matched the Devilbears' offensive output with two hits, with Lacey, Owen Deprez, and Cole Bzdawka also contributing.

First pitch on Wednesday and potentially Thursday is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

A Great Home Debut For Trio of Rattlers

Luis Peña, Jesús Made, and Travis Smith of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers played their first game at Neuroscience Group Field on Tuesday night.  It was an unbridled success in front of a season-high crowd of 6,209.  Peña homered and drove in three runs. Made doubled, walked, scored a run, and made an incredible defensive play.  Smith allowed two earned runs over 5-2/3 innings for his first Midwest League win.

Great Lakes (59-48 overall, 25-17 second half) took the lead in the top of the first inning.  The Loons had runners at the corners with one out.  Eduardo Quintero, who doubled with one out, scored from third after the Rattlers couldn’t complete a potential 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Peña tied the game with a two-out, solo home run to left-center in the bottom of the third against Great Lakes starting pitcher Wyatt Crowell.  The homer was his second in six games as a Rattler.

The Loons took the lead back in the top of the fifth inning.  Jake Gelof doubled to start the inning and was at third with one out.  Wisconsin brought the infield in, and Frank Rodriguez hit a grounder right to Jesús Made at short.  Gelof was caught in a rundown between third and home long enough for Rodriguez to take second base.  Kendall George followed with a single to center to score Rodriguez for a 2-1 lead.

The Rattlers (49-58, 15-27) rallied in their half of the fifth.  Blayberg Diaz doubled, and Luis Castillo walked to start the inning.  Jesús Made walked with one out to load the bases for Peña.  Wyatt committed a balk before his first pitch to Peña to allow Diaz to score the tying run.

One pitch later, Peña ripped a single to center to drive in Castillo and Made for a 4-2 lead.

Smith ran into a little trouble in the top of the fifth after a one-out walk to Logan Wagner.  Cameron Decker hit a high foul pop to first that Diaz couldn’t secure and instead of two outs, Decker got a second chance.   It was Wagner who made the most of the mistake going to second on a wild pitch and stealing third base.  Decker drove in Wagner with a sacrifice fly to center to cut the Wisconsin lead to one run.

That run also ended Smith’s night as Jesús Broca was called in from the bullpen.  Broca would go the rest of the way and protected the one-run lead for his fifth save of the season.

It was not a great start for Broca as he walked the first batter he faced before getting the final out of the sixth.

In the seventh, Kendall George had a two-out single, stole second, and went to third on an error.  Broca walked Quintero to set up a lefty-lefty match-up with Zyhir Hope, one of the top prospects in baseball.  Broca won the battle by striking out Hope to end the threat.

An uneventful, 1-2-3 eighth inning was followed by Broca retiring the first two Loons in the ninth.  Then, Broca walked the number nine batter to bring George back to the plate.  Broca grounded out to Made at short on the first of this at bat to end the game.

The win marked Wisconsin’s second straight win.  The last time the Rattlers one two in a row was when they swept a doubleheader from the Beloit Sky Carp on July 6.

Game two of the series is set for Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Manuel Rodriguez (1-3, 2.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Great Lakes is going with Payton Martin (6-2, 4.00) as their starter.  Game time is 12:10pm CDT.

Casco drops championship opener to Denmark

The Casco Athletics will have to win two straight to end their season on a high note after losing the first game of their Shoreland League Championship Series 2-0 to Denmark on Monday.

The Athletics outhit the Devilbears 5-2, but it was an error that pushed across the game's first run in the seventh inning when Hayden Konkol scored from second. Two errors in the eighth helped the Devilbears score their insurance run.

The Athletics can keep their season alive with a win on Wednesday in Casco, which would force a decisive third game on Thursday in Casco. The first pitch both nights are 7:30 p.m.

Swimmers, golfers, tennis players open WIAA season

A week after many boys across the state officially opened their fall season with football practices, the same can be said about girls across three different sports.

Girls' golf started its season on Monday with its first practices of the year, while tennis and swimming followed suit on Tuesday.

For the second straight year, no local team will compete in tennis, with Kewaunee joining Kiel in opting out of their subsectional. Door County United is the area's only swim team, opening its 2025 campaign on August 23rd at Marinette. The turnaround is much quicker for girls' golf. After practicing for the first time on Monday, Sturgeon Bay is scheduled to open at home on Thursday against Bonduel, Oconto, Seymour, and Shawano while Luxemburg-Casco opens with a scramble against  Denmark, Marinette, and Oconto Falls.

Rockers sweep Woodchucks, traverse to Pit Spitters next

The Green Bay Rockers dug themselves out of an early hole to advance to the Division Championship after sweeping the Wausau Woodchucks with a 6-4 win on Monday.

The Woodchucks struck first with three runs in the second inning and matched the Rockers with one run in third inning to post a 4-1 lead. They would hold onto that lead until the eighth inning when the Rockers scored three times courtesy of a lead-off homer from Jeremy Delamota and a pair of errors. They took the lead in the next inning when Xaige Lancaster's power surge continued with a solo shot  and Eric Jeon scored on a wild pitch. The Woodchucks had the tying run at the plate when Max Soliz was struck out by Rockers pitcher KJ Ward, who pitched the final two innings with five strike outs.

The Rockers will travel around the lake on Tuesday before a night game against the Traverse City Pit Spitters, who swept their divisional semifinal series against Kalamazoo. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.

Tanner Gillis Named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week

Tanner Gillis earned the Midwest League’s Pitcher of the Week Award with a great start at Peoria on August 7.  He is the third Wisconsin Timber Rattler to win a weekly award this season.

Gillis pitched 6-1/3 scoreless innings, allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out seven as he earned the win in Wisconsin’s 9-0 victory over the Chiefs.  He is 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA in nine starts with Wisconsin.  Gillis has walked five and struck out 26 over 43-1/3 innings pitched in the Midwest League this season.

The other two Timber Rattlers to win weekly awards this season are pitcher Tyson Hardin (May 19) and outfielder Hedbert Pérez (May 26).

The Timber Rattlers start a six-game series with the Great Lakes Loons at Neuroscience Group Field on August 12.  The series features the home debuts of Jesús Made and Luis Peña, the top two prospects in the Milwaukee Brewers system.

Door County League round-up: Kolberg climbs to top of standings

The standings took another shuffle on Sunday after three games were played ahead of the final weekend of the regular season.

In Kolberg, the Braves jumped out to a 7-0 lead en route to a 9-5 win over Egg Harbor. In the decisive first inning, Trevor Reinhardt led the game off with a homer before the the Braves scored their other runs on three bases-loaded walks and a fielder's choice. The Indians ate into the Braves' advantage with three runs in the fifth inning and two more in the eighth. Austin Dart paced the Braves, going 3-4, while Jack Peterson went 2-4 with an RBI. Nick LeCaptain and Trevor Hawkey each drove in a pair of runs. Nick Kita and Brody Kollath each tallied two hits in the loss with Kita, Drew Price, Cody Giesseman, and Cory Fuller recording RBI in the Indians' loss.

The Bays lost their hold on first place after getting edged by Washington Island 2-1.

In West Jacksport, Institute out-hit the Ports 8-5 but found themselves on the wrong end of an 8-4 loss. The Ports drew nine walks in the contest as Frankie de Young, Derek Niedzwiecki, Jake Lebotte, and Riley Cordier all drove in runs for the Ports. The Ports led 5-2 before adding three insurance runs in the seventh inning. The Cubs were led by Sam Zirbel and Robby Pollman's two-hit days, while Nick Peterson, Zirbel, and Quin Schram recorded RBIs. Drew Tanck earned the win, allowing one run (1 ER) on two hits while striking out two across five innings.

Casco opens championship series in Denmark Monday

The Shoreland League crown is on the line beginning on Monday when Casco travels to Denmark for the first of potentially three games in the championship series.

The A's clinched their spot with a two-game sweep of Algoma, beating the Penguins 4-1 and 12-2. The Devilbears needed an extra game to earn their place in the championship series, splitting the first two games before beating Manitowoc 8-5 in the decisive third matchup.

The two teams combined for five All-Shoreland League honorees, with the A's boasting Noah Lindsley (Pitcher of the Year) and Mitch Jandrin, while Collin Lacey earned Newcomer of the Year honors.

The first game is on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Denmark. Casco will host games two and potentially three on Wednesday and Thursday at the same time.

Fast start propels Rockers past Woodchucks

The Green Bay Rockers jumped out to a 5-0 lead en route to an 8-4 win over the Wausau Woodchucks to take a 1-0 lead in their divisional series.

The Rockers scored in four of the first five innings, including a two-run second inning courtesy of a solo shot from Xaige Lancaster and a RBI single off the bat of Eric Jeon. The Woodchucks narrowed the lead to one after scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning, but Eli Selga extended the lead out to four with one swing of the bat, driving in three runs on a home run.

Lancaster and Jeremy Delamota posted three-hit games while Collin Helms and Joe Mennella each had two hits in the Rockers' win. The Rockers outhit the Woodchucks 14-4. Steve Marhefke earned the win, allowing four runs (0 ER) on four hits across 5.1 innings, recording two of the team's six strikeouts.

The two teams travel to Wausau for game two on Monday night at 6:05 p.m.

Wisconsin's Series Finale in Peoria Canceled

Sunday’s series finale between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Peoria Chiefs has been canceled due to unplayable field conditions at Dozer Park.  Since this was the final scheduled meeting between the teams, it will not be rescheduled.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They return to action on Tuesday with game one of a six-game series against the Great Lakes Loons.  Game time is 6:40 pm.

Blizzard Roll Past Steamwheelers in Epic Eastern Conference Championship Win

The Green Bay Blizzard delivered a thrilling performance Friday night, edging out the Quad City Steamwheelers 71-64 to claim the Eastern Conference Championship and punch their ticket to the IFL title game.

From the opening kickoff, the game was electric. Andre Williams set the tone by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown, and kicker Andrew Mevis’s extra point and subsequent kickoff deuces kept the scoreboard ticking early. QB Max Meylor and ATH TJ Davis connected multiple times throughout the night, with Davis finishing the game with an incredible four touchdowns.

Though the Steamwheelers battled back, scoring on nearly every possession and leading briefly in the second half, Green Bay stayed resilient. RB Kymani Clarke was a powerhouse on the ground, rushing for three touchdowns and providing crucial momentum-shifting plays.

The game came down to the wire with penalties and special teams plays adding to the drama. Mevis’s three kickoff deuces proved vital, while a late safety and a clutch onside kick recovery helped seal the win.

With this 71-64 victory, the Blizzard earned their right to face the Vegas Knighthawks in the IFL Championship game Saturday, August 23, in Tucson, AZ. Kickoff is set for 9:30 PM CST, and Green Bay will be looking to bring home their first-ever IFL title.

Rockers Fall in Regular Season Finale, Set Sights on Playoffs

The Green Bay Rockers wrapped up their regular season Friday night with an 11-8 loss to the Madison Mallards at Warner Park, a game that summed up both the highs and the frustrations of their summer.

Starter Skyler Sievert gave the Rockers four strong innings, keeping Madison’s bats quiet early, before running into trouble in the fifth. The Mallards struck for four runs in the frame, erasing Green Bay’s lead and swinging momentum their way.

Despite the loss, the Rockers again outhit Madison 11-10, continuing a recent trend of generating offense but struggling to put games away. Two costly errors proved pivotal, extending innings and giving the Mallards extra opportunities to cash in runs.

Green Bay had already secured its playoff position by winning the first half of the season, but will need to get back to playing its strongest baseball heading into the postseason. The Rockers are 3-2 over their last five games, three against Madison and two against Wausau, including a sweep of the Woodchucks earlier this week (4-3, 10-5).

That same Wausau team will meet Green Bay again Sunday in the playoff opener. First pitch is set for Sunday evening (5:05PM), with the Rockers looking to quickly put Saturday's loss behind them and bring their best baseball to the postseason stage in the three-game series.

Fans Storm Back to Lambeau for Preseason Football

A summer storm rolled into Titletown late Saturday afternoon, but it couldn’t keep Packers fans from making their long-awaited return to Lambeau Field.

The first home preseason game of the year brought nearly 73,000 fans through the gates, most of them unfazed by the lightning delays and heavy rain that swept through just hours before kickoff. Regardless of weather, the atmosphere was pure Green Bay Packers football.

It didn’t take long for Jordan Love to get the crowd going. The Packers quarterback looked sharp in limited action, connecting early with rookie receiver Matthew Golden, who continued to show why he’s been a training camp standout and worthy of the first round selection. Golden’s crisp routes and reliable hands earned him a loud ovation from the soaked-but-smiling Lambeau faithful.

On defense, Bo Melton turned heads in his continued transition from wide receiver to cornerback, a switch he began this training camp. Wearing No. 16, Melton showed quick feet and solid positioning, breaking up a pass and holding his own in coverage against Jets wideouts. His adaptability has been one of the more intriguing storylines of August, and Saturday gave fans their first real look at him in game action on the defensive side.

Green Bay’s defensive front kept steady pressure on the Jets quarterbacks, forcing hurried throws and limiting big plays. Special teams chipped in with solid punt coverage and a clean kicking game despite the wet turf. One downside for the Packers was the penalty count — flags flew often on both sides of the ball, stalling drives and extending others. It’s the kind of early-season sloppiness the team will want cleaned up before Week 1.

Penalties were a major issue. Flags flew often on both sides of the ball, killing drives and giving the Jets extra chances to extend theirs. By the end, the scoreboard told the story. The Jets left Lambeau with a 30-10 win, handing Green Bay an early reminder that there’s work to be done before Week 1.

For fans, the result mattered far less than the return to their football home. From tailgates steaming in the humid air to the first “Go Pack Go” chant echoing through the stands, the night felt like more than just a game. It was the start of another season in Green Bay, one storm clouds couldn’t stop.

Wisconsin Escapes With Win Over Chiefs

Harry Houdini would be proud!  The legendary escape artist who called Appleton, Wisconsin home as a young man could never have devised the death traps constructed by the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in the final four innings of Saturday night’s game against the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park.  Yet, time and again the Rattlers escaped unscathed in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings to record a thrilling 4-3 win.

Marco Dinges returned to the Wisconsin lineup for the first time since he left the game on June 29 with an injury and promptly gave the Rattlers the lead.  Jesús Made walked with one out in the first inning and moved to second on a wild pitch.  Dinges singled to center to knock in Made for a 1-0 lead.

The Chiefs (43-63 overall, 17-24 second half) tied the score without a hit in the bottom of the third.  Rattlers starting pitcher Ryan Birchard walked the first two batters – Anyelo Encarnacion and Won-Bin Cho – of the inning.  Luis Castillo made a leaping catch at the wall in left to snag a liner off the bat of Jon Jon Gazdar with Encarnacion tagging and moving to third with one out.

Cho broke for second with Zach Levenson at the plate and drew a throw.  Second baseman Jesús Made cut off the ball in front of the base and fired back to the plate as Encarnacion had broken for the plate.  The play was close, and the call was safe to allow Encarnacion to score the tying run.

The Rattlers (48-58, 14-27) went back in front with three runs in the top of the fifth inning with a little help from the Chiefs.

Dinges walked to start the frame.  Juan Baez sent a slow chopper up the third base line for a single.  Peoria third baseman Jesús Baez had no play at first but tried to get Dinges rounding second.  However, the throw from Baez was wild to allow both Dinges and Juan Baez to advance.  Frank Elissalt, the Peoria starter, was rattled and was called for a balk to allow Dinges to score and send Baez to third with Tayden Hall at the plate.  Hall would eventually draw a walk to put runners on the corners.

Hall broke for second on an attempted steal with Luis Castillo hitting.  Elissalt turned to throw to first and caught Hall in a rundown.  However, another balk was called to allow Baez to walk home for a 3-1 lead.

DJ Carpenter was brought into the game with two outs and Hall at second to face Luiyin Alastre.  Then, Alastre doubled to score Hall for a 4-1 advantage.

Birchard pitched a 1-2-3 fourth and worked around a two-out walk in the fifth.  He went back out for the sixth and this is where the excitement started.

Zach Levenson singled and Birchard walked Jesús Baez on four pitches.  That was the end of the line for Birchard.

Aaron Rund was called in from the Wisconsin bullpen and he struck out Deniel Ortiz for the first out.  Dinges tried to pick Baez off first after the first pitch to Travis Honeyman.  However, the throw got through Hall.  The ball rolled down the line in right to allow Levenson to score with Baez only making second base.  Honeyman followed that with a single to left to put runners on the corners.  Ryan Campos followed that with a double to drive in Baez and get Honeyman to third.  Rund walked the next batter to load the bases with one out and the Rattlers clinging to that one-run lead.

This is where the escape acts started.  Rund struck out the next two batters to end the sixth.

In the seventh, Peoria had the tying run at third and one out after a lead-off walk, a botched double play, and a wild pitch.  Rund got out of this inning with a shallow fly to right that kept the runner at third and a flyout to center.

Yerlin Rodriguez entered for the bottom of the eighth inning for the Rattlers.  He had not allowed an earned run in his previous ten outings.  He would test that streak to the breaking point on Saturday night.

Rodriguez walked the first two batters on nine pitches.  Another botched double play ball loaded the bases with no outs.  Back-to-back strikeouts and a grounder near third for a force play ended the inning with the Rattlers still up by one run.

The bottom of the ninth started with a strikeout.  Yhoswar Garcia made an amazing catch in center for the second out.

It would not be a drama-free march to the final out because Rodriguez walked Ortiz to put the tying run on base.  Then, he threw a wild pitch to move Ortiz into scoring position with the tying run.  Of course, the count went full to Honeyman before Rodriguez got him swinging at strike three to end the game.

Wisconsin’s trio of pitchers combined to allow three hits, walk ten, and strike out ten as they held the Chiefs to 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park.  Travis Smith (0-0, 4.50) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Nate Dohm (0-0, 3.00) is set to start for the Chiefs.  Game time is 2:05pm.

Three games on the DCBL slate Sunday

Three more games are on the schedule for Sunday in Door County Baseball League action after Maplewood and Baileys Harbor kicked things off on Friday.

Sunday's games include Institute traveling to West jacksonport, Sister Bay crossing Death's Door to Washington Island, and Kolberg hosting Egg Harbor.

All games begin at 1:30 p.m.

Mets rally back against the A's

After losing their lead in the ninth inning, Maplewood scraped together another two runs in extras to beat Baileys Harbor 8-6.

Scoreless through five innings, both teams put up crooked numbers in the sixth inning with the Mets scoring five of the eighth runs in the frame thanks to a string of three singles and an error. The game was 6-3 in the ninth inning before the A's pushed across one run before Caleb Plzak tied the game on a two-run homer. Adam Gutschow made it a quick bout in the 10th with his own two run homer to put the Mets up before the A's went 1-2-3 in their half of the inning.

Plzak led the A's offensively, going 2-4 with two RBI. Gutschow and Zach Marchant posted multiple hit games for the Mets.

Rockers Split Double Header with Madison

Fifteen innings of softball were played in Green Bay today for the two-game, seven-inning double header and the Rockers managed to come out on top in the latter after a big splash in the fourth inning that put up all five runs leading to a 5-3 victory. Game one, however, went in favor of the Mallards after the game was pushed to eight innings with Madison plating a run in the top and Green Bay failing to respond.

Game One:

A back-and-forth battle ensued in game one with Madison jumping out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, but Green Bay responded scoring four across the third and fourth the knot the game back up.

In the sixth a run was plated by both teams before a scoreless seventh pushed the shortened seven-inning game into extras.

On the mound for Green Bay was Drew Aguiar, one of the best arms for the Rockers this season holding a 1.14 ERA in 15 appearances and 31.2 innings. With Carson Hansen starting on second for the Mallards by way of the international tie breaker, Aguiar would need to work smartly to navigate the inning.

He forced shut down the first two batters he saw, but a flyout to right field advanced Hansen within 90 feet. Then the lone hit he allowed, a single through the left side by Aiden Arnett scored what would be the winning run for the Mallards, a 7-6 victory.

Game Two:

With a quick intermission before the first pitch of game two, the Rockers looked to prevent the sweep once again from Madison, but again found themselves in an early deficit. This time it was just 2-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth.

Six batters reached base in the fourth for the Rockers, three via a walk as Ty Brooks lost command. The first four batters of the inning reached and worked early to plate two of the five runs scored from Green Bay in the fourth. Two-run RBI singles from David Ballenilla and Xaige Lancaster proved to be the difference makers in the game. With insurance being added on a Eric Jeon sacrifice fly making the 2-0 deficit turn into a 5-2 lead in just a half inning.

The Mallards were held to just one more, a response in the fifth when Austin Grube found himself also losing command, but the defense for the Rockers prevailed when Max Humphrey threw out Brock Lulewicz trying to advance.

Green Bay was led in the double-header offensively by Xaige Lancaster who went 4-for-6, driving in a pair of runs and scoring three times. Selga, Eli Selga also had himself a night reaching five times in seven at bats while plating one run and scoring as well.

The final regular season game will take place in Madison Saturday, August 9th at 6:05pm while Green Bay awaits their opponent for the first round of the playoffs beginning Sunday August 10th at Capital Credit Union Park, a 5:05pm start.

Chiefs Shut Out Wisconsin

One night after the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers shutout the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park, the Chiefs returned the favor by handing Wisconsin a 7-0 loss on Friday night.  The series is even at two wins for each team with two games remaining in the set.

The Chiefs (43-62 overall, 17-23 second half) scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the second inning.  There were runners on first and second with one out when Wisconsin starting pitcher Sam Garcia got Ian Petrutz to send a hard grounder to first.  Tayden Hall went for the force play at second.  However, Luis Peña could not hold the base for the out and his return throw to first was late to load the bases.  Hall was charged with an error on the play.

Garcia got the second out of the inning on a strikeout of Anyelo Encarnacion.  However, catcher Blayberg Diaz was charged with a passed ball on the first pitch to Brayden Jobert to allow a run to score from third.  Then, Jobert hit a high, slicing flyball to the left field corner.  Luiyin Alastre made a long run and a desperate jump only to have the ball elude him for a two-run double.

Zach Levenson added to the Peoria lead with a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Josh Kross added another two-out, solo homer in the sixth and the Chiefs were up 5-0.

Wisconsin (47-58, 13-27) had a lot of chances against Peoria starting pitcher Braden Davis, who walked six in his outing.  They just couldn’t convert on their opportunities.

Davis walked Luis Peña to start the game.  The next batter was Jesús Made, who grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.  Davis walked the next two batters before getting a strikeout to end the inning.

Davis walked Yhoswar Garcia in both the second and fourth innings and Daniel Guilarte in the third.  Garcia was caught trying to steal second in both innings by catcher Ryan Campos.  Guilarte was also caught stealing second in the third inning.

Peña had Wisconsin’s first hit off Davis when he doubled with one out in the sixth inning.  He would be thrown out at third trying to stretch his hit into a triple.  That ended the game for Davis, who struck out four in 5-2/3 innings.

Jawilme Ramirez entered the game and walked Made, who would be thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning.

Peoria added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Patricio Aquino.  The Chiefs had runners at second and third with two outs when Aquino balked in one run.  Kross followed with a triple to center to make it 7-0.

Made had the other hit for the Timber Rattlers, a one-out single in the ninth off Mason Bruns, who would walk Juan Baez, too.  The next two Rattlers were retired to end the game.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at Dozer Park.  Ryan Birchard (2-6, 4.18) is the announced starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Frank Elissalt (0-0, 0.00) is expected to start for the Chiefs.  Game time is 7:05pm.

Blizzard visit Steamwheelers for IFL Conference Championship

The Green Bay Blizzard looks to avoid their second straight exit in the conference championship round on Saturday when they visit Moline, Ill., to take on the Quad City Steamwheelers.

The Steamwheelers hope to even the season series against the Blizzard, which won two straight games after Quad City scored a slim 39-37 win in the opener. The Blizzard won the other two contests 47-25 in Green Bay on May 10th and 58-52 in Moline on July 10th.

Packers open preseason Saturday vs. Jets

The Green Bay Packers will see their team line up against someone else for the first time on Saturday when the New York Jets come to town.

The Packers open the preseason at home for the first time since 2021, the year the Jets last played the Green and Gold in the exhibition slate. The Packers have been busy addressing their roster depth as injuries pile up in training camp.

The Jets will have a new quarterback and head coach after Aaron Rodgers and Robert Saleh's marriage ended last season. Justin Fields and Aaron Glenn hope to fill that role more successfully this season.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Rockers double up Woodchucks

The Green Bay Rockers struck first and added on late in its 10-5 win over the Wausau Woodchucks on Thursday night.

The Rockers posted three runs in the second inning thanks in part to back-to-back run-scoring singles from Jeremy Delamota and Stefan Di Corrado and led 3-1 before the two teams combined to score 11 runs in the back half of the game. The scoring spurt was highlighted by home runs from the Rockers' Eric Jeon and Joe Mennella.

Mennella had three RBI while Jeon, David Ballenilla, Max Humphrey, Delamota, and Di Corrado knocked in runs. Collin Helms, Eli Selga, and Humphrey posted multi-hit games. The Rockers used five pitchers in the game, with Ethan Alexander earning the win after allowing no runs on one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Made Makes a Statement in Wisconsin Victory

Jesús Made, the #1 prospect in the Milwaukee Brewers organization, went 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBI to lead the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 9-0 victory over the Peoria Chiefs Thursday night at Dozer Park.  Tanner Gillis, the Rattlers starting pitcher, cruised through 6-1/3 scoreless innings for the win as the beneficiary of Wisconsin’s ten-hit attack.

Wisconsin (47-57 overall, 13-26 second half) scored five times in the top of the second inning after there were two outs to take control of the game.  Luis Castillo started the inning with a walk but was only to third base with two outs.  Andrick Nava doubled to knock in Castillo and start a streak of six straight Rattlers reaching base.

Kay-Lan Nicasia walked to extend the rally.  Then, Luis Peña blooped a hit to center to score Castillo and send Nicasia to third base.  Peña noticed that no one was covering second and the centerfielder was holding the baseball without throwing it back to the infield.  So, Peña raced for second and picked up a double.  That hit knocked Peoria starting pitcher Jason Savacool out of the game.

Made welcomed Christian Worley to the game by lacing a single to right to knock in both runners for a 4-0 lead.  Made showed off his speed when he scored all the way from first on a double to left by Hedbert Pérez to make it 5-0.

That offense was more than enough for Gillis.  The right-hander allowed two hits, walked none, and struck out seven.  Gillis set a new professional single-game high for strikeouts with his performance.

The Rattlers kept adding on to their lead.  Luiyin Alastre had a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth.

In the sixth, Peña was hit by a pitch with one out.  Made followed with a 111mph line drive homer to right for an 8-0 lead.  The homer was Made’s first as a Timber Rattler.

Nava added one more run for the Rattlers with an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning.

Peoria (42-62, 16-23) didn’t get a runner past first base until Tre Richardson had a two-out double off Stiven Cruz in the bottom of the eighth.  Cruz pitched out of the spot and tossed 1-1/3 scoreless innings.

In the bottom of the ninth, Anthony Flores walked three but kept the Chiefs from scoring to close out Wisconsin’s eighth shutout of the season.

Nava, Made, Alastre, and Pérez each had two hits in the game for the Rattlers.

Game four of the series is Friday night at Dozer Park.  Sam Garcia (1-7, 5.52) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers.  Peoria will go with Braden Davis (1-0, 1.20) as their starter.  Game time is 7:05pm.

Patrick Haese, Bryce Plzak, and Caleb Plzak set the table at the top of the order with two hits apiece. Caleb Plzak also drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Kolberg scored nine unanswered runs, including three in the first inning, to beat their southern rivals Maplewood 9-1 at home. Tory Jandrin's fielder's choice represented the lone run scored by the Mets in the game. Jaden Dillar and Zach Marchant each had two hits in the Mets' loss.

The schools and communities receiving honorable mention include Kimberly, Sauk Prairie, and Washburn.

The sportsmanship displayed by Fall Creek at the State Softball Tournament at Goodman Softball Complex on June 11-14 led to its selection as the WIAA/Rural Mutual Insurance Sportsmanship Award recipient for the first time in softball and for the fourth time overall. The Crickets' prior three selections were all for girls basketball, including 2021, 1994, and 1986. As the top seed in Division 3, they finished runner-up following an 11-5 loss to second-seeded Poynette in the championship game. The Crickets advanced from the semifinals with a 6-4 win over Valders. Honorable mention for the award was extended to Cedarburg, D.C. Everest, Hamilton, Lakeland, McDonell Catholic, New Richmond, Poynette, Sun Prairie East, Thorp and Watertown.

Johnson Creek demonstrated respectful and positive team and spectator support in winning the Division 4 championship at the State Baseball Tournament held at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on June 16-19. It’s the first time the Bluejays have been named as the award recipient. As the second seed, they shut out top-seeded Pacelli 5-0 in the championship game after downing #3-seeded Pittsville 6-2 in the semifinals. Honorable mention for the award was given to Aquinas, Badger, Barron, Edgar, Fennimore, Hudson, Pittsville, Reedsburg, and Sun Prairie East.

The Rockets have also received recognition in boys' tennis in 2002, 2006, 2016, and 2017; girls' tennis in 2000, 2015, and 2021; girls' soccer in 2001; and boys' basketball in 1969, 1975, and 1988.  As the #4 seed, the Rockets defeated Marquette 4-3  in the Division 1 quarterfinals before falling to top-seed, and eventual champion, Brookfield Central 6-1 in the semifinals. Altoona received an honorable mention for the award.

The WIAA/Rural Insurance Sportsmanship Award is presented to one school program and community–or communities in the case of cooperative programs–that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship in WIAA team tournaments. Award winners are determined by the conduct and sportsmanship displayed by athletes, coaches, cheer and support groups, mascots, bands, and spectators. Additional consideration is given to the effort of school administrators and chaperones to ensure positive support for their teams and showcase the highest ideals of sportsmanship.

The selection process includes evaluations from contest officials, tournament management, security personnel, crowd control and ushers, and WIAA staff members. Rural Mutual Insurance began sponsoring the Sportsmanship Award program in 1965.

Shoreland League: Casco clinches championship berth

Mitch Jandrin drove in four runs on four hits to help guide Casco to a Shoreland League Championship Series berth after beating Algoma 12-2 on Wednesday.

The Penguins scored the first run on a Ben Skenadore homer, but a pair of RBI singles from Noah Lindsley and Collin Lacey helped the A's take the lead in the bottom of the second inning. The game flipped on its head when the A's scored nine runs in the fourth inning with Jandrin's grand slam and a two-run homer by Patrick Daniels dealing the fatal blows to the Penguins. With the game out of hand, the A's scored one more run in the fifth and the Penguins scored one in the sixth before the game was called in the seventh.

Daniels, Jandrin, and Lacey all had multi-RBI games in the A's win, combining to collect eight of the team's 13 hits. Lindsley earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven. Jaden Dillar went 2-3 for the Penguins while Jack Peterson, Skenadore, and Tyler Neinas registered the other hits in the loss. Carson Leist was on the mound for the loss, allowing 10 runs (9 ER) on eight hits across 3.1 innings.

Rockers edge Woodchucks

On Wednesday, the Green Bay Rockers used a three-run third inning to secure a 4-3 win over the Wausau Woodchucks.

After the two teams traded runs in the first inning, Joe Mennella hit a three-run homer over the right field wall to put the Rockers ahead. The Woodchucks scratched across one run in the seventh and ninth innings, but the Rockers left the tying run stranded at third base in the ninth to keep the game in the win column.

Aidan Kuni, Eli Selga, and David Bellenilla recorded two hits in the win. Cole Linton earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out three across six innings.

The two teams are back at it tonight at 6:35 p.m., though the Rockers will take on its alternate identity, the Green Bay Rollers, for the game at Capital Credit Union Park.

Peoria Rallies Past Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers held leads of 3-0 and 4-3 on Wednesday night against the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park.  Peoria used a pair of three-run innings to erase those leads and go on to an eventual 6-4 victory.

Wisconsin (46-57 overall, 12-26 second half) took advantage of a wild start by Chiefs pitcher Chen-Wei Lin.  The first three Rattlers to bat in the first inning – Jesús Made, Luis Peña, and Hedbert Pérez – walked on seventeen pitches.  Made fouled off the first pitch of the game before Lin missed the strike zone with his next sixteen pitches to load the bases.

Luis Castillo took two more balls from Lin before a pitch found the zone.  On a 2-2 pitch, Castillo launched a deep fly to left that was caught.  All three base runners tagged and moved up with Made scoring for a 1-0 lead.

Tayden Hall added to the lead with an RBI single.  Yhoswar Garcia made it 3-0 with an RBI grounder.

Peoria (42-61, 16-22) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning.  Manuel Rodriguez, the Wisconsin starting pitcher, had a runner at first with two outs when he walked Ian Petrutz.  Won-Bin Cho made the most of the chance by lining a home run to left-center to even the score.  Cho has two home runs this season.

The Rattlers went back in the lead in the top of the fourth.  Kay-Lan Nicasia walked and stole second to start the inning against Gerardo Salas, the third pitcher of the game for the Chiefs.  Blayberg Diaz singled with one out to drive in Nicasia for a 4-3 lead.

Rodriguez was cruising after the home run by Cho in the second inning.  He retired ten of the next eleven batters he faced and went back out to protect the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Deniel Ortiz jumped on the first pitch Rodriguez threw in the sixth and hit a long, game-tying home run.  Travis Honeyman reached on an infield single, and Ryan Campos sent a grounder up the third base line against the Rattlers defensive alignment for a double to put runners on second and third with no outs.  Josh Kross put the Chiefs in front for the first time with a deep flyout to center to score Honeyman.  Jon Jon Gazdar gave Peoria some insurance with a single to right through the drawn-in infield to chase Campos home for a 6-4 lead.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Rattlers had runners on first and second with one out against Zeke Wood, who got the second out on a strikeout.  Diaz stepped in and sent a blooper to shallow center.  Petrutz raced in to make a sliding catch to end the inning.

Pérez singled with two outs in the ninth against Mason Burns to bring the tying run to the plate.  Burns shut down hopes of a Wisconsin rally by getting the final out on a routine grounder to second.

Hall had three of Wisconsin’s six hits in the game.

Game three of the series at Dozer Park is scheduled for Thursday night.  Tanner Gillis (1-2, 2.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Peoria has named Jason Savacool (3-0, 3.75) as their starter.  Game time is 6:35pm.

Packers sign WR, place OL on Injured Reserve

Injuries forced the Green Bay Packers to make some roster moves on Wednesday.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced that the Packers signed WR Isaiah Neyor and placed T Travis Glover on injured reserve.

Neyor joins a crowded wide receiver room after a short stint with the San Francisco 49ers this summer. According to Packers.com, Neyor played in 12 games with nine starts and led Nebraska with five receiving touchdowns, grabbing 34 receptions for 455 yards along the way.

The Glover designation comes after the Packers signed G/C Lecitus Smith on Tuesday.

Casco looks to sweep Algoma in Shoreland playoffs

Casco could clinch a berth in the Shoreland League Championship Series with a win Wednesday night against Algoma.

Three runs in the first inning set a tone that Casco did not relinquish as they beat Algoma on Monday, 4-1.

Owen Deprez delivered the game's fatal blow with a three-run homer to give the A's the early lead. Jack Peterson helped the Penguins get on the board in the sixth inning with a single that drove in Jaden Dillar. The A's scored an insurance run in the ninth inning when Deprez returned with an RBI single. Deprez's night ended with four RBI on two hits, with three other players registering at least one hit. The Penguins' Dillar, Peterson, and Tyler Neinas collected the lone hits for the Penguins in the series' opening loss.

First pitch in Casco is set for 7:30 p.m.

Deprez's night ended with four RBI on two hits, with three other players registering at least one hit. The Penguins' Dillar, Peterson, and Tyler Neinas collected the lone hits for the Penguins in the series' opening loss.

Explosive Fourth Proves Difference Maker In High-Scoring Affair

A six-run fourth inning capped off by a grand slam from Landon Gaz led the way for the Rafters in a 12-8 route over Green Bay Tuesday evening.

Green Bay would outhit the Rafters, 10-6, but five hit batters and eight walks, including five in the fourth, allowed for a timely hit to break the game open in the opposition's favor.

Wisconsin Rapids started the game scoring in the first six innings, but was then held scoreless by Rockers' relievers Mac Yarbrough (1.0 IP, 1 K) and Drew Aguiar (2.0 IP, 2 K). The pair retired seven straight to finish the game going back to the seventh.

Green Bay wouldn't go down without a fight of their own, scoring in three straight innings. A three-run fifth in part to a Jeremy Delamota home run, his lone hit in the game was followed with four in the sixth when Eric Jeon showed off his speed with a bases clearing triple and was brought home by a sacrifice fly from Aidan Kuni.

Both Jeon and Kuni finished 2-for-3 with an extra base hit and walk to lead the offense.

The Rockers would nearly erase their 10-run deficit, but couldn't get any closer than the final four-run difference after tacking on a run in the seventh.

Packers sign OL Smith

The Green Bay Packers have added a new piece to the offensive lineman to the room ahead of Saturday's preseason matchup against the New York Jets.

The Packers signed G/C Lecitus Smith and waived/injured WR Sam Brown Jr. on Tuesday. According to Packers.com, the third-year player out of Virginia Tech previously signed with the Packers during the 2024 offseason and participated in training camp. He was kept on the practice squad for the first six weeks of last season.

Rattlers Win As Top Brewers Prospects Debut

New players contributed in big ways for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in their 5-3 win over the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Tuesday Night.  The victory allowed the Rattlers to snap a three-game losing streak.

Luis Peña announced his presence in the Wisconsin lineup with authority.  The #2 prospect of the Milwaukee Brewers had been called up to the Timber Rattlers on Sunday.  He launched a long home run to left on a 2-2 pitch with one out in the top of the first in his first at bat with the Rattlers.

Kay-Lan Nicasia put Wisconsin (46-56 overall, 12-25 second half) up 2-0 with a double off the top of the wall in left to score Andrick Nava from second.

The Chiefs (41-61, 16-22) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run double by Deniel Ortiz.  Those were the only two runs allowed by Travis Smith, the Rattlers starting pitcher making his debut with the team after being called up from the Carolina Mudcat last week.  Smith walked two and struck out three over four innings for a no decision.

Nicasia teamed up with another new face on the Wisconsin roster to take the lead in the top of the seventh.  Nicasia singled to start the inning.  Jesús Made, Milwaukee’s #1 prospect who also was called up to the Rattlers on Sunday, lined a triple to right on the tenth pitch of his at bat against Domenic Picone to drive in Nicasia for a 3-2 lead.  Made would score moments later on a grounder to short by Juan Baez with the throw home going wild for a two-run cushion.

Jesús Broca, Wisconsin’s first relief pitcher on Tuesday, had pitched around trouble in the fifth and sixth inning thanks to a pair of double plays.  He would need a different kind of defensive assistance in the seventh to maintain the lead.

Broca retired the first batter after the stretch with a strikeout.  However, a walk was followed by a single off the bat of Won-Bin Cho to put the tying runs on base.  Zach Levenson singled home a run to make it 4-3 and bring Jesús Baez to the plate for the Chiefs.

Baez singled sharply to left and Cho tried to score from second.  Luiyin Alastre fielded the ball cleanly and fired home to get Cho by a lot for the second out.  Broca got the final out of the seventh on a force play at second.

Yhoswar Garcia manufactured an insurance run for the Rattlers in the top of the eighth.  He dropped a bunt single with one out against reliever Jawilme Ramirez.  Garcia stole second for his 47th stolen base of the season.  Garcia kept the pressure on by taking off for third.  Ramirez still had the ball on the mound.  He stepped off and threw wildly to third and that let Garcia jog home for a 5-3 lead.

Broca got the first two outs in the eighth inning before giving way to Jack Seppings.

The game got interesting as a double by Josh Kross off the glove of Tayden Hall at first base was followed by a single to left.  Kross decided not to challenge Alastre and that left runners at the corners for the Chiefs when Seppings got the final out on a grounder to short.

In the bottom of the ninth, Seppings faced a situation of runners at first and second with one out.  He struck out Ortiz on three pitches for the second out.

Travis Honeyman was the last chance for the Chiefs.  He lined a 1-1 pitch to the gap in right-center for an apparent game-tying double.  However, Nicasia glided over from right and made a diving catch to end the game.

Seppings earned his first Midwest League save as the Rattlers picked up a win in game one of their six-game series.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Dozer Park.  Wisconsin has named Manuel Rodriguez (1-2, 1.73) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:35pm.

Sterling Sharpe Joins Brother Shannon in Canton

On Saturday, the Sharpe's became the first NFL brothers to join the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the induction of Sterling, a longtime Green Bay Packers wide receiver.

The former seventh overall pick out of South Carolina played seven seasons in Green Bay where he averaged 85 catches and 1,162 yards a season while totaling 65 touchdowns. Before a neck injury cut his career abruptly short he was named to five Pro Bowls and received first-team All-Pro three times.

His retirement came in 1994, but Sharpe had to wait 25 years to finally claim his gold jacket, something that was long overdue after being eligible for induction since 2000. In 2002, Sterling Sharpe was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame joining a ring of greats, but Saturday was a day he'll never forget.

Sterling was sure to emphasize the Pro Football Hall of Fame was never the goal, but that it's a great feat and one he's proud to share with his brother. Shannon Sharpe famously said he was the "second best player in his family" during his own induction speech in 2011, on stage Saturday, Sterling jokingly agreed with Shannon, but the pair also shared a special moment. Three years after Sterling had to retire, Shannon gave his older brother his Super Bowl ring which he won after his Denver Broncos beat Sterling's Packers. This time, Sterling took his gold jacket and gave it to Shannon claiming him to be the only Hall of Famer with two gold jackets.

A special moment shared for the first time between brothers in Canton who hold a bond like no other.

The weekend's festivities brought over 130,000 to the Ohio town amongst those joined in celebrating the great accomplishment was a sea of Green Bay Packers fans from all over the United States, and another Sterling, named after the "best wide receiver to ever play the game," said his dad Ross in an interview with WIS10 News.

It's a stark reminder of the impact that players have on the communities they represent and a prime example of what it means to be a Green Bay Packer for life.

A's capture first game against Guins

Owen Deprez delivered the game's fatal blow with a three-run homer to gave the A's the early lead. Jack Peterson helped the Penguins get on the board in the sixth inning with a single that drove in Jaden Dillar. The A's scored an insurance run in the ninth inning when Deprez returned with a RBI single.

Deprez's night ended with four RBI on two hits, with three other players registering at least one hit. The Penguins' Dillar, Peterson, and Tyler Neinas collected the lone hits for the Penguins in the series' opening loss.

The two teams face each other for game two in Casco on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Rockers go yard against Rafters

The Green Bay Rockers clubbed four home runs to beat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 9-6 on Monday night in Ashwaubenon.

The Rockers did their work in the first four innings, putting up at least two runs in three. The Rockers' Collin Helms struck first with a solo homer to kick off a four-run first inning. Eli Selga homered in the second inning, David Ballenilla hit a two-run dinger in the third, and Selga struck again with a two-run round-tripper to cap off the Rockers' scoring. The Rafters posted a pair of three-run innings in the seventh and eighth innings, but it was not enough to flip the script against the Rockers.

Selga ended his night going 2-3 with two homers and three RBI. Aidan Kuni and Brayden Buchanan also had two-hit nights. Steve Marhefke earned the win with six innings of shutout ball, allowing five hits while striking out five.

Door County League: Ports, Islanders, and Braves win blowouts

Lopsided results comprised most of the Sunday slate of Door County Baseball League games.

West Jacksonport only needed eight innings to knock off Sister Bay 14-1.

Baileys Harbor's Aaron Brey and Danny Lodl held down a tough Egg Harbor lineup for an 8-2 win. The pair combined to strike out 13 while allowing two runs on seven hits. Patrick Haese, Bryce Plzak, and Caleb Plzak set the table at the top of the order with two hits apiece. Caleb Plzak also drove in a pair of runs in the win. Cory Fuller, Nick Kita, and Cole Krause each had two hits in the loss for the Indians.

The Islanders outhit the Cubs 15-4 in the contest, with Ben Geiger posting three hits and two RBI while Ben Johnson, Luke Geiger, and Ray McDonald were registering two of their own. Matt Petersilka also drove in a pair for the Islanders in the win. The Cubs scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to get the score a little closer. Sam Zirbel and Caleb Hoffman were rewarded with RBIs for their efforts, while Zirbel, Will Hartman, Quinn Schram, and Nick Peterson all posted hits for the Cubs.

Kolberg scored nine unanswered runs, including three in the first inning, to beat their southern rivals Maplewood 9-1 at home. Trevor Reinhardt led the way, going 3-5 at the plate and throwing six innings of shutout ball while striking out eight on the mound. Jack Peterson homered and drove in three runs as part of his 2-4 day. Austin Rohe also had a multi-hit day for the Braves in the win. Tory Jandrin's fielder's choice represented the lone run scored by the Mets in the game. Jaden Dillar and Zach Marchant each had two hits in the Mets' loss.

All the scoring happened in the first three innings of the game, with the Mallards opening the game with two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second inning. Gavin Brummund took the brunt of the damage on the mound for the Rockers, allowing five runs (4 ER) on six hits while recording two strikeouts. A one-out homer by Collin Helms accounted for the only run scored by the Rockers in the game. Helms went 3-3 on the night with a double to go along with the homer. Joe Mennella was the only other player to record a hit in the game for the Rockers as they were outhit 9-4 on the day.

The Rockers return home for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters.

Lake County Survives Sunday in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers almost pulled out a comeback victory over the Lake County Captains on Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  However, their late victory was denied as the Captains won 2-1 in ten innings to earn a 4-2 win in the six-game series.

Robert Gasser made the third and final start of his MLB rehab assignment as a Timber Rattler for the Milwaukee Brewers.  He needed just sixteen pitches to work two scoreless innings.  He allowed a single to Jaison Chourio in the second inning but ended the inning and his outing with his lone strikeout and a 5-4-3 double play.

Lake County (56-46 overall, 21-15 second half) got on the board in the top of the fifth inning.  Consecutive singles and a force play at second put runners on the corners with one out against reliever Patricio Aquino.  Ralphy Velazquez singled to right to score the runner from third for a 1-0 lead.

The Captains should have added to their lead in the eighth inning against reliever Anthony Flores.  They had Estaban González at second and Juan Benjamin at first with two outs.  Alfonsin Rosario dumped a single to left field that should have scored González.  However, Benjamin was thrown out at third for the final out of the frame before González touched home and the run did not count.

Wisconsin (45-56, 11-25) came alive after that play.  Blayberg Diaz doubled with one out in the bottom of the eighth.  Steward Berroa, who was playing the final game of his minor league rehab assignment for the Brewers, tied the game with a double to left to score Diaz.

In the bottom of the ninth, Tayden Hall hit a deep drive to right with one out that brought the crowd to its feet, but the ball fell short of a game-winning homer as Nick Mitchell made the catch on the warning track after a long run.  No one in the outfield could catch a line drive to left-center off the bat of Yhoswar Garcia and he raced around to third base with a triple.  However, the Rattlers left him stranded and the game went to extra innings.

Lake County took the lead very quickly.  Mitchell, the placed runner at second base, took third on a deep fly to left-center from Jose Devers and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Jacob Cozart.

In the bottom of the tenth.  Daniel Guilarte hit a grounder to the right side of the infield to move Kay-Lan Nicasia, the runner placed at second to start the inning, to third.  However, Jack Jasiak earned his thirteenth save of the season with a popup and a flyout.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They return to action in Illinois with game one of a series against the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park on Tuesday night.  Game time is 6:35pm.

Explosive Bats Too Much to Overcome for Green Bay

A third-inning hit parade, led by Davis Hamilton and Will Johannes, proved too much for the Rockers to handle Saturday evening as they fell 9-4 to the Mallards.

Once again, Green Bay struck first, scratching across a run on a fielder’s choice that scored Xaige Lancaster in the third. But Madison responded immediately in their half of the inning. A double from Hamilton (4-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI) drove in a pair, and he would later score on a groundout to first. Johannes then (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI) capped off the four-run inning with a deep drive to center field.

Madison would go on to score in every inning that followed. A sacrifice fly from David Ballenilla brought the game within four in the sixth, and a last-ditch effort in the top of the ninth plated two unearned runs on back-to-back doubles from Brayden Buchanan and Lancaster, but the Rockers’ fate was already sealed, dropping their third straight.

Lancaster and Buchanan both collected two hits and an RBI for Green Bay.

The Rockers are back in Madison for one more before returning home for a six-game homestand at Capital Credit Union Park, with the regular season finale set for Saturday, August 9th, back in Madison.

Fans Welcomed Back to Lambeau Field for Family Night

With just a week remaining before their first preseason game, the Green Bay Packers welcomed nearly 60,000 fans to Lambeau Field on Saturday night for their annual Family Night celebration.

Festivities kicked off early with a new addition this year, Family Fest, held at Titletown, located just across the street from Lambeau Field. The event offered fans activities, games, and entertainment leading into the main event: watching the Packers conduct practice under the lights.

Another big change developing in camp has been Bo Melton’s position switch. The former full-time wide receiver has made the move to cornerback this offseason, looking to follow in the footsteps of two-way players like Jaguars rookie Travis Hunter. Though Melton has primarily taken snaps on defense, head coach Matt LaFleur has been impressed with his transition which was highlighted when Melton broke up a pass from Jordan Love in tight coverage on rookie Matthew Golden tonight.

Much of the excitement surrounding Family Night centered on quarterback Jordan Love’s continued development and his growing connection with first-round pick Matthew Golden. The duo connected early in practice on a third-and-long conversion, a play that drew loud applause from the crowd.

While Family Night is a fan-friendly event designed to celebrate the Packers’ community, the players understand it’s also an opportunity to earn a roster spot. Omar Brown, a practice squad safety, stole the show with three interceptions on the night, bringing his total to five for training camp. His standout performance earned him MVP honors of the evening.

As families and fans gathered for the post-practice fireworks show under the lights of Lambeau, one thing was clear -- football regular season is right around the corner.

Captains Contain Wisconsin

Jaison Chourio’s big night was enough for the Lake County Captains to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  The #5 prospect in the Cleveland Guardians and the brother of Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio, went 4-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Captains to a 5-1 win.

Lake County (55-46 overall, 20-15 second half) scored twice in the first inning.  Chourio cashed in the first run with a double to left.  Nick Mitchell made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly.  Lake County has scored in the first inning in three straight games.

Wisconsin starting pitcher Sam Garcia retired sixteen Captains in a row starting with a sacrifice fly by Mitchell.  The streak was snapped after a two-out walk to Ralphy Velazquez in the sixth.  Then, Chourio singled for his second hit of the game.  Garcia ended the threat with a popup.

Garcia set a new single-game high as a pro for innings pitched (6.0) and strikeouts (7) as he kept his offense within striking distance.

The Rattlers (45-55, 11-24) perked up in the bottom of the sixth inning against Lake County starter Caden Favors as Daniel Guilarte and Luiyin Alastre singled with one out and pulled a double steal.  Steward Berroa drove in Guilarte with a grounder to third that scored Guilarte by kept Alastre at second.  Yhoswar Garcia followed with an infield single and steal of second that put runners on second and third.

Favors escaped the inning when Hedbert Pérez lined out to second for the third out.

The Captains added an insurance run in the top of the seventh against reliever Stiven Cruz, who walked the lead-off batter and gave up a double to the next Captain.  Estaban González drove in the run with a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, Lake County loaded the bases with one out only to see Cruz ground into an inning-ending 5-2-3 double play.

Tayden Hall started the Wisconsin eighth inning with a double off Tyler Naquin and Alastre walked with one away.  Naquin held the lead at two runs with a popup and a grounder to short as both runners were stranded.

However, Chourio sealed the win for the Captains in the ninth.  Aaron Rund had one on with two outs when he walked two batters to load the bases for Chourio.  A 2-2 pitch just missed to run the count full.  Then, Chourio lined a pitch to right for a two-run single for his fourth hit of the game and a 5-1 lead.

Lake County has a 3-2 lead in the series after Saturday night.

The series finale is Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Robert Gasser (0-0, 6.00) is set to make another rehabilitation start for the Timber Rattlers.  The Captains plan to send Sean Matson (0-0, 6.00) to the mound as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 1:10pm.

Blizzard kick off playoff campaign vs. Oilers

The Green Bay Blizzard looks to make even more noise in the postseason this year, and it all starts on Sunday at 3 p.m. when they host the Tulsa Oilers at the Resch Center.

The two teams have played a pair of competitive games so far this season. The Blizzard defeated the Oilers 74-68 on a goalline play that saw Green Bay walk it off in front of its home fans. However, the Oilers were able to avenge the loss a few weeks later with a 46-30 win.

The Blizzard came up one game short of the championship game last season after missing out on the playoffs for several years.

Rockers' Early Lead Not Enough to Down Woodchucks

A first inning 2-0 lead for the Rockers slowly faded in the final game of a home-and-home for Green Bay and Wausau tonight leading to a 6-2 loss.

With one out and one on in the first inning Joe Mennella took the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field for his fifth homerun of the season and propelled the Rockers to an early two-run lead. It came a night after his homerun left them shy of victory once again.

The Woodchucks would plate their first in the third after Rockers' righty Evan Bogart hit Dom Rodriguez pushing across Malone. A fifth-inning RBI single by Max Soliz tied the game at two, before Wausau broke it open with two-run innings in both the sixth and seventh.

Green Bay was held to just three hits in the loss, with Mennella accounting for two of them (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI). Malone led the way for Wausau from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and 3 RBI.

The Rockers are set to face a new opponent tomorrow with first pitch at 6:05pm in Madison as the regular season approaches the finish line.

Packers take practice under the lights for Family Night

Training camp practices shift from Ray Nitschke Field in the daytime to Lambeau Field under the lights on Saturday for the Green Bay Packers' Family Night scrimmage.

The event will mirror what happens on the practice field, giving the team their first taste of the Lambeau Field experience since they lost to the Chicago Bears in the season finale. Doors for the event will open at 5:30 p.m., with the team taking the field for warmups at 7 p.m. and practice beginning at 7:30. The Packers reminded fans that a few tickets remain available to purchase. If they are interested in attending, they should do so quickly.

Captains Sail Past Timber Rattlers

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers let one get away on Friday night against the Lake County Captains at Neuroscience Group Field.  The Rattlers had a 2-1 lead heading into the sixth inning.  The Captains scored three runs in the inning on two errors and three hits to take the lead and kept adding on as the Rattlers racked up five errors on the night.

Lake County (54-46 overall, 19-15 second half) took the lead in the top of the first inning.  Alfonsin Rosario doubled with one out.  Ralphy Velazquez followed with a single to right and a misplay allowed Rosario to score an unearned run.

Wisconsin (45-54, 11-23) responded in the bottom of the third inning on a two-run double by Eduardo Garcia.

Tanner Gillis, the Rattlers starting pitcher allowed three hits through his first 5-1/3 innings.  Then, the game turned on a couple of doubles and a couple of errors.

Kevin Rivas started the rally for the Captains in the sixth inning with a one-out double.  Gillis got Christian Knapczyk to hit a grounder to third that Juan Baez misplayed.  Then, Baez fired wildly to first to put runners on the corners.  Rosario was next and he ripped a ball to left.  The ball lodged under the padding but left fielder Yhoswar Garcia went in to dig the ball out.  By the time he got the ball in two runs scored and Rosario was standing on second with a double to give Lake County the lead.

There were two outs when Nick Mitchell hit a grounder ticketed for right field. Second baseman Daniel Guilarte made a diving stop in, got to his feet, and fired wildly to first.  Mitchell reached on an RBI single to score Rosa and went to second on the throwing error.

Wisconsin’s offense went dormant after the third inning as they had two base runners from the fourth through the ninth – a one-out walk to Garcia in the fifth and a one-out single by Juan Baez in the eighth.

The Captains added to their lead in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Jaison Chourio.  In the ninth, Tayden Hall couldn’t come up with a grounder to first with runners at first and second.  A run scored and left runners at second and third.  The fifth error of the night set up the final run of the night when Yerlin Rodriguez uncorked a wild pitch.

Friday night was the first time the Rattlers have committed five errors in a game since August 5, 2021 when they lost 8-4 to the Beloit Snappers.

Eduardo Garcia went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, and two RBI in the game.  He is 9-for-17 with five RBI in the first four games of the series with the Captains.

Game five of the series is Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Sam Garcia (1-6, 5.92) is set to start for the Timber Rattlers.  The Captains have named Caden Favors (3-8, 4.97) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Kita walks off Chiefs with homer for Penguins

Brady Kita capped off a four-run comeback win for Algoma as they advanced in the Shoreland League playoffs with an 11-10 win over Kewaunee on Thursday.

The Penguins thought they would cruise to an easy win after taking a 6-0 lead after four innings, only to see the Chiefs take advantage of four walks and three hit-by-pitches to tie the game. The two teams traded runs in the sixth before the Chiefs scored three runs in the seventh, highlighted by a run-scoring singles from Brett Paulsen and Nathan Havolitz. The Penguins would not go away quietly in the night, scoring two runs in the eighth and ninth inning capped off by Kita's two-run shot.

Jack Peterson paced the Penguins' offense with four RBI on a 4-5 night with a homer. Tyler Neinas had three hits while Will Jandrin and Jaden Dillar each had a pair of knocks in the Penguins' win. Ethan Paplham and Paulsen each had two hits and combined to drive in four runs.

Rockers edged by 'Chucks

A seven-run fifth inning turned the tides against the Green Bay Rockers as they ended up falling 10-9 to the Wausau Woodchucks on Thursday.

After both teams scored twice in the first inning, a three-run homer by Joe Mennella capped off a four-run rally for the Rockers. After the the Woodchucks scored eight runs unanswered including their seven-run frame in the fifth, the Rockers made a comeback in the sixth with three runs, but could not scratch across another run to fall just short.

David Ballenilla homered twice to knock in four runs to complement Mennella's homer. Payton Mansfield went 3-5 and a RBI for the Rockers in the loss.

Tenth-Inning Comeback Gets Wisconsin a Win

Eduardo Garcia and Blake Burke have been consistent offensive contributors to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers this season.  In the tenth inning on Thursday night against the Lake County Captains at Neuroscience Group Field, the duo delivered the game-tying and game-winning hits for a 5-4 walkoff win over the Lake County Captains in front of the largest crowd of the season.

Alfonsin Rosario gave the Captains (53-46 overall, 18-15 second half) the lead with a solo home run in the first inning.  The homer was the sixteenth of the season for Rosario.

Wisconsin (45-53, 11-22) broke through against Lake County starting pitcher Matt Wilkinson in the bottom of the fifth.  The rally started with a lead-off single by Garcia and a walk to Burke.  Kay-Lan Nicasia tied the game with a single to center.

Wilkinson walked Luis Castillo to load the bases.  Then, Andrick Nava singled to right to score Burke with the go-ahead run and chase Wilkinson from the game.

Tayden hall capped the scoring with an RBI grounder against Alonzo Richardson to score Nicasia.

Manuel Rodriguez, the Wisconsin starting pitcher, turned a 3-1 lead over to the bullpen after the sixth inning.  Rodriguez allowed one run on two hits, walked none, struck out four, and retired the final twelve Captains he faced in the game.

Lake County would tie the game in the top of the seventh against Jesús Broca.  Back-to-back infield singles started the inning.  Jose Devers hit a one-hopper near the third base bag.  Luiyin Alastre went for the backhand pick as he looked for a potential 5-3 double play.  However, he missed the ball and Devers wound up with an RBI double.  Broca walked the next batter to load the bases with no outs.

Juan Benjamin tied the game moments later with a sacrifice fly.  Broca escaped the inning with the game still tied.

The game remained tied into the top of the tenth inning.  Patricio Aquino retired the first batter in the tenth on a grounder to the right side that allowed Benjamin, the placed runner at second, to take third base.  Aquino hit the next batter before retiring Christian Knapczyk on a flyout to shallow left.  Castillo made the catch and Benjamin held third base...until Castillo lost the ball taking it out of his glove.  This error allowed Bejamin to score the go-ahead run.

In the bottom of the tenth, pinch runner Juan Baez was at second to run for Nava.  He was bunted to third.  Izaak Martinez, the fourth Lake County pitcher of the night, walked Daniel Guilarte, the ninth hitter in the Wisconsin order on four pitches to put the winning run on base.

It looked like it wouldn’t matter because Martinez struck out Alastre and was quickly ahead of Garcia with two strikes.

Down to his team’s last strike, Garcia hit a little popup behind first and the ball found a hole in the Lake County defense.  The ball landed on the infield dirt, but it was enough to score Baez with the tying run, send Guilarte to third with the winning run, and set the stage for Burke.

The Rattler first baseman was 0-for-7 with six walks in his first thirteen at bats of the series with the Captains.  He worked the count to 3-2 and line the next ball to the gap in left-center to score Guilarte for a 5-4 victory.

Garcia went 3-for-5 on Thursday night.  He is 8-for-14 in the series with Lake County.

Wisconsin’s seventh walkoff win of the season happened in front of the largest home crowd of the season with 5,927 fans in attendance.

Game four of the series is set for Friday night at Neuroscience Group Field.  Tanner Gillis (1-1, 2.59) is scheduled as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Jackson Humphries (0-8, 4.14) is set to start for the Captains.  Game time is 6:40pm.
