A summer storm rolled into Titletown late Saturday afternoon, but it couldn’t keep Packers fans from making their long-awaited return to Lambeau Field.
The first home preseason game of the year brought nearly 73,000 fans through the gates, most of them unfazed by the lightning delays and heavy rain that swept through just hours before kickoff. Regardless of weather, the atmosphere was pure Green Bay Packers football.
It didn’t take long for Jordan Love to get the crowd going. The Packers quarterback looked sharp in limited action, connecting early with rookie receiver Matthew Golden, who continued to show why he’s been a training camp standout and worthy of the first round selection. Golden’s crisp routes and reliable hands earned him a loud ovation from the soaked-but-smiling Lambeau faithful.
On defense, Bo Melton turned heads in his continued transition from wide receiver to cornerback, a switch he began this training camp. Wearing No. 16, Melton showed quick feet and solid positioning, breaking up a pass and holding his own in coverage against Jets wideouts. His adaptability has been one of the more intriguing storylines of August, and Saturday gave fans their first real look at him in game action on the defensive side.
Green Bay’s defensive front kept steady pressure on the Jets quarterbacks, forcing hurried throws and limiting big plays. Special teams chipped in with solid punt coverage and a clean kicking game despite the wet turf. One downside for the Packers was the penalty count — flags flew often on both sides of the ball, stalling drives and extending others. It’s the kind of early-season sloppiness the team will want cleaned up before Week 1.
Penalties were a major issue. Flags flew often on both sides of the ball, killing drives and giving the Jets extra chances to extend theirs. By the end, the scoreboard told the story. The Jets left Lambeau with a 30-10 win, handing Green Bay an early reminder that there’s work to be done before Week 1.
For fans, the result mattered far less than the return to their football home. From tailgates steaming in the humid air to the first “Go Pack Go” chant echoing through the stands, the night felt like more than just a game. It was the start of another season in Green Bay, one storm clouds couldn’t stop.
