Phoenix men hosts IUPUI for lunch

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team will have thousands of grade-school students cheering them on Thursday morning when they welcome IUPUI to the Resch Center.

The Phoenix are hosting their annual Education Day Festivities after sweeping two Detroit-area teams over the weekend. An 11-0 run late in the second half sent the biggest Resch Center crowd in four years into a frenzy as the Phoenix beat the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 69-59 before another late run dispatched Detroit Mercy 78-64 behind another strong performance from Noah Reynolds. The weekend helped a Green Bay men's basketball freshman get named the Under Armour Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the third straight week,. David Douglas Jr. earned the honor for the third time this season after he scored 22 points on Saturday against the Titans.

The Jaguars enter the game with a 6-17 record and losers of their last three games. In a similarly themed game, the Phoenix beat the Jaguars in Indianapolis earlier this season 68-58 behind a 26-point performance from Douglas.

Tip-off is set for 11 a.m.

Phoenix women finish off perfect weekend

The Green Bay Phoenix tightened its grip on the Horizon League with a 77-59 win over Wright State on Sunday.

The Phoenix women performed strongly in front of the program's all-time leading scorer, Chari Nordgaard Knueppel, who had her number retired at halftime. They opened the game by scoring its first 10 points and had a similar 12-4 run in the third quarter to balloon the lead to 26 points. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz led the way for the Phoenix with 20 points, while Cassie Schiltz, Maddy Schreiber, and Natalie McNeal added 13 points in the win. Alexis Hutchison paced the Raiders with 17 points.

Sunday's performance was preceded by the Phoenix men making the most of its alumni day with a 78-64 victory. The two teams traded leads early before the Phoenix went on one 9-0 run in the first half and another in the second half to put some distance between them and the winless Titans. Noah Reynolds registered 34 points, while David Douglas, Jr. connected from outside en route to a 22-point afternoon. Jayden Stone scored 20 points, and Marcus Tankersley chipped in another 17 points in the Titans' loss.

Musketeers complete comeback, beat Gamblers in OT

The Green Bay Gamblers could not hold onto its 3-1 advantage heading into the third period, falling to the Sioux City Musketeers for the second night in a row, this time 5-4 in a shootout.

Scoring in the first two periods came early and fast with the two teams trading goals within 30 seconds of each other in the opening two minutes of the first period and the Gamblers scored two more in the opening two minutes of the second period. The Musketeers would force overtime by outscoring the Gamblers 3-1 in the third period, including a goal by Easton Jacobs in the frame's final minute. Lev Katzin scored the only goal in the shootout for the Gamblers they lost to the Musketeers 2-1.

Jayson Shaugabay followed up his hat trick with two assists while the Gamblers also received a multi-point game from Julian Lutz (1G, 1A). Gavin Moffatt stopped 20 of the 24 shots he saw.

Rockers introduce alter-ego Supper Clubbers

For three Friday nights this season, the Northwoods League champion Green Bay Rockers will go by a different name.

As a part of a partnership with Drink Wisconsinibly, the Rockers will take on the moniker of the Supper Clubbers on June 7th, June 21st, and July 26th. Following the final Friday night game on July 26th, the game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off, with the proceeds benefitting a local charity. Special menu items like old fashioneds and fish frys will also be a part of the celebration.

Alternate names are nothing new for the franchise once known as the Bullfrogs and the Booyah. For example, the Rockers paid tribute to their gridiron neighbors for one season, going by the moniker GOATS on Sundays.

The Rockers will start their title defense on Memorial Day on the road before three home games beginning on May 28th.

Shaugabay's hat trick goes for naught in Gamblers' loss

Jayson Shaugabay registered a hat-trick, but the Sioux City Musketeers still captured the 6-4 win over the Green Bay Gamblers at the Resch Center Friday night.

The Musketeers scored two goals a period against Adam Gajan with Colin Gessler (1G, 2A) and Tate Pritchard (2G, 0A) registering multi-point games. Tanner Bruender's second-period goal was the only non-Shaugabay tally for the Gamblers. Gajan stopped 17 of the 22 shots he faced while the Musketeers' Samuel Urban came up with 22 saves on 26 shots.

The two teams will play against each other again on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

Phoenix men retake the league with win over Oakland

An 11-0 run late in the second half sent the biggest Resch Center crowd in four years into a frenzy as the Green Bay Phoenix beat the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 69-59.

Until that run, the two teams traded blows like a pair of heavyweight fighters with neither having a lead larger than four points in the first half. The Golden Grizzlies entered the half with a 28-27 lead and had it tied at 50 with just over six minutes. That's when the Phoenix stepped up the defensive pressure while knocking down shots to outscore their visitors 19-9 down the stretch.

Foster Wonders scored a career-high 19 points from behind the arc and Will Eames notched his own career-high with 14 points. Teammate Rich Bhyre matched him with 14 points. Blake Lampman scored 15 points, and Chris Conway added 14 points in the loss for the Golden Grizzlies.

Phoenix women bounce back against IUPUI

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team got off the mat after its first Horizon League loss of the season on Saturday with a resounding 87-59 win over IUPUI on Wednesday.

The Phoenix did their part to put the Jaguars away early, outscoring their hosts 32-10 in the first quarter. Even as their hot start cooled, they could extend their lead by as much as 31 points in the game's final frame.

Four Phoenix players reached double figures, including a pair of double-doubles posted by Jasmine Kondrakiewicz (21 points, 13 rebounds) and Maddy Schreiber (13 points, 11 rebounds). Tahlia Walton led all scorers with 22 points in the loss for the Jaguars.

Green Bay basketball action continues Thursday when the men host Oakland in a battle for first place in the Horizon League. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Packers fire defensive coordinator Joe Barry

The Green Bay Packers have parted ways with defensive coordinator Joe Barry.  The announcement comes less than one week after the Packers lost to the San Francisco 49ers 24-21 in the Divisional Playoffs on Saturday.

In a statement, head coach Matt LeFleur said, “These decisions are extremely difficult and Joe is one of the bet men I’ve had the opportunity to work with in this league.”

Barry coached in Green Bay for three years and was widely criticized by Packer fans for the defensive shortcomings that past two years.  The Packers did turn the season around with late season wins over the Bears and Vikings and a playoff upset of Dallas, but it was not enough to save Barry’s job at the end.

Packers re-sign practice squad free agents

The Green Bay Packers secured 14 players from last season's practice squad on Monday.

General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced that they signed LB Keshawn Banks, S Tyler Coyle, WR Grant DuBose, DL Jonathan Ford,  CB Zyon Gilbert, CB Anthony Johnson, QB Alex McGough, RB Ellis Merriweather, LB Arron Mosby, LB Kenneth Odumegwu, FB Henry Pearson, WR Thyrick Pitts, T Kadeem Telfort and TE Joel Wilson.

EDITORIAL: Ready, or Not, Membership to Continue NIL Discussions

The 2023 Area Meetings unveiled many topics of membership interest and helped determine the course of discussion and action over the next several months. The assembly’s collective responses indicated Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) will be addressed, maybe as soon as the Annual Meeting in April.

The data collected at the seven Area Meetings this fall, depending on how it is interpreted, may or may not indicate support for consideration of NIL oppor- tunities. Of those that attended the Area Meetings and participated in the poll, 47.3 percent favored consideration to add NIL opportunities. Those opposing new language was 18.6 percent. While overwhelmingly more yes than no votes were cast, 35 percent were noncommittal and wanted to continue the discus- sion before settling in on a position. How this subset leans will determine if it’s closer to a 50-50 split or significantly in support of adding NIL opportunities. In addition, 148 of 515 member schools weren’t represented by the poll. It may be fair to reason it’s not a foregone conclusion the membership supports NIL opportunities, but a pathway appears to be unfolding to bring an amendment to the Advisory Council and Board of Control to determine if it will advance to the membership for a vote in April.

The current amateur status language has been relatively unchanged for many decades with the premise interscholastic athletic opportunities are strictly amateur in nature. There are currently six conditions within Article VI outlining violations of amateur status in the membership’s Rules of Eligibility (p. 32 in the Senior High Handbook).

Undoubtably, there is a trend among state athletic and activity associations nationwide–after the NCAA created its NIL opportunities a couple of years ago following a Supreme Court decision–to loosen their stance on pure amateurism and their restrictions on the exploitation of student-athletes. As the culture in society shifts, it dictates new and different priorities. The NFHS has adjusted its position on NIL in the past two years, asking states to further explore the topic. In addition, it appears the prevailing sentiment within state associations is to move toward adopting more allowances for NIL to help prevent outside intervention dictating NIL measures by the courts or legislatures.

The data we shared at the Area Meetings indicate 32 state associations have approved some aspect of NIL opportunities, up from 16 states a year ago. Seven other states are now considering adding language. That’s just not a trend; it’s a tidal wave.

It remains to be seen if cracking the door on NIL will lead to the opening of the flood gates. We have reviewed how other state associations have altered their amateur status regulations. A potential amendment to our Rules of Eligi- bility will most likely allow student-athletes NIL endorsement opportunities as long as there is no identification or association to the school team, school, con- ference or WIAA affiliation. Any NIL opportunities will also include restrictions collectives in relation to recruiting and booster clubs, subject matter not appro- priate for school-aged individuals as well as continued commitment to the team and school.

The amendment will be a reasonable attempt to compromise and manage our own rules and regulations. Even so, those clinging to the concept of pure amateurism for education-based activities will suggest we need to “be careful what we wish for.” Proponents of NIL language provide a compelling case to allow compensation for employment, regardless of whether it is working at the area grocery store, bailing hay for the farmer next door or if it’s endorsing a local business or service, conducting camps and clinics, or being a social media influ- encer.

How many NIL opportunities will be significantly lucrative at the high school level? Most, if any, will be local opportunities void of substantial marketing budgets to have teenagers endorsing their businesses, services or causes.

For the few teenagers it may provide employment and earnings; however, there are many more that will be void of any opportunities. With teenaged teammates, what impact will it have in the locker room and on the team dynamic when elite star status goes beyond just popularity to actual earnings to be able to afford or be compensated with a shiny, new pick-up truck or advanced training and care?

And, how do we feel about the prospect of a high school athlete potentially making much more than the coach or even the school administrator? This could already be happening based on existing employment opportunities, but it could be more prevalent with NIL earnings based on celebrity derived by athletic accomplishments and abilities.

Consider the difficult parent in pursuit of collegiate athletic scholarships and the pressure that places on their sons and daughters. Is it fair to opine that we can rachet up the pressure a bit if there are NIL dollars in play. That is a family matter, but hasn’t this type of focus ultimately impacted high school programs in some manner?

It’s conceivable that addressing NIL as an association now may help us avoid outside intervention, slow the rush of what may appear inevitable and reduce the number of amateur-status violations. Likewise, it’s equally compelling to imagine the potential adverse scenarios that may begin to erode the foundation that makes high school sports special.

The ultimate impact on interscholastic athletics is relatively unknown with- out a peek into the future, but the adoption of NIL at the collegiate level provides a glimpse of what pitfalls may lie ahead. Fundamentally, NIL could have little significance if the number of opportunities as well as the level of compensation are reasonable.

The current state of amateurism as it relates to interscholastic sports is not a new phenomenon. It may be more of a progression and an evolution of the sport culture that has led us here. As we consider the direction society takes us, it may be more than just the most cynical that believes amateur athletics, in its purest form, is a thing of the past. That’s what member schools will need to come to terms with to determine whether they’re ready for NIL opportunities or not.

Green Bay basketball teams look for reset after winning streaks halted

The Green Bay Packers weren't the only Titletown-based teams to lose on Saturday, as both the Phoenix men's and women's basketball teams suffered defeats.

In Oakland, the Phoenix women lost a shootout to the Golden Grizzlies 83-81. The second quarter proved fatal for the Phoenix, which were outscored 27-13 by the Golden Grizzlies. The Phoenix chipped away at the deficit throughout the game but went cold at the line in the closing minutes to lose the game. Natalie McNeal scored a career-high 24 points in the loss, while Maddy Schreiber chipped in 16 points, and Bailey Butler added a dozen more. The Phoenix were thwarted by Oakland's Brooke Quarles-Daniels and Kennedie Montue, who scored 27 points and 23 points, respectively.

The Phoenix men fell behind early and never could catch up in a 72-55 loss to Northern Kentucky on Saturday. Elijah Jones led the Phoenix with 11 points while Marcus Hall tallied seven points. THe Norse held down Noah Reynolds for much of the game, allowing him to score just nine points.

Gamblers win series against Phantoms

The Green Bay Gamblers came up a game short of sweeping its weekend series against the Youngstown Phantoms.

The Gamblers captures the first two games at the Resch Center on Friday and Saturday, winning those games over the Phantoms 5-4 and 5-3. The Phantoms were able to prevail on its getaway day, 6-4.

Leading the Gamblers in scoring during the weekend set was Julian Lutz with six points (1G, 5A), Michael DeAngelo with five points (2G, 3A), and Ben Poitras with five points (2G, 3A). Two others registered three points.

Chicago Blackhawks draft pick Adam Gajan went 1-1 in his return to the Gamblers, while Gavin Moffatt won his lone start between the pipes for the team.

Packers follow recipe for playoff disappointment in latest loss to 49ers

Saturday's 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers looked eerily similar to previous playoff exits for fans of the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers traded touchdowns for field goals early on as they entered halftime down 7-6 after Brock Purdy found George Kittle for a long score.

Both teams picked up the offense in the third quarter, with Jordan Love throwing touchdowns to Romeo Doubs and Bo Melton to take a 21-14 lead into the final quarter. Things went off the rails from there as special teams failed the Packers with a missed field goal, and Jordan Love's late interception capped things off after Christian McCaffrey scored his second touchdown. The Packers' defense dropped multiple interceptions and was a step too late from getting home on several dropbacks by Purdy.

Jordan Love's day ended with him throwing for 194 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Aaron Jones capped off his exciting end to the season with 108 yards on 18 carries.

Packers look to exorcise playoff demons in Santa Clara

The Green Bay Packers hope their recent playoff history against the San Francisco 49ers gets changed on Saturday night when the two teams face each other in the NFC Divisional round.

The 49ers had last week off as the NFC's number one seed, but the Packers clicked as they left the over 93,000 in attendance and millions watching at home in shock Sunday evening as they throttled the Dallas Cowboys 48-32. The Packers scored six touchdowns on its first seven possessions to keep the Cowboys chasing them all night. Jordan Love ended the day shy of a perfect passer rating with 272 yards and three touchdown passes. Aaron Jones rushed for 118 yards and three scores, while Romeo Doubs led all receivers with six catches for over 150 yards.

The Packers have succeeded against the 49ers over the last 20 years, but not in the playoffs. The 49ers have won the last four playoff matchups against the Packers, which have not beaten their western rivals since Brett Favre led them to a 25-15 win in 2001.

The Packers will face the 49ers in Santa Clara on Saturday at 7:15 p.m.

Phoenix men, women post wins Thursday

Green Bay Phoenix basketball fans were treated to a pair of wins on Thursday night, with the men sweeping its season series with Wright State thanks to an 88-81 victory and the women blowing past Detroit Mercy 75-48.

In Detroit, the Phoenix women dominated the middle periods as they outscored the Titans 42-19 thanks to an infusion of offense from its bench players. Bailey Butler led the Phoenix with 14 points while she was joined in double figures by Natalie McNeal (12 pts), Natalie Andersen (11 pts), and Cassie Schiltz (10 pts). Emma Trawally Porta led the Titans with 11 points.

In Dayton, the Phoenix saw their 10-point halftime lead shrink but never eclipsed as they continued to hold onto their second-place slot in the Horizon League. Noah Reynolds very nearly delivered a triple-double performance, scoring 30 points while registering eight rebounds and eight assists. Three other newcomers, Preston Ruedinger (18 points), Foster Wonders (17 points), and Marcus Hall (11 points) all had career highs.

The two teams are back in action on Saturday, with the Phoenix women playing at Oakland at 1 p.m. and the Phoenix men playing at 5:30 p.m. at Northern Kentucky.

Packer injury list lengthy for Saturday's playoff game

The Green Bay Packers will face the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers on Saturday and again have a long injury list of players who may not play after a short week.

The most notable injury in the win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday was the loss of linebacker Kinglsey Enagbare, who tore his ACL and will be out for the season.

The remaining injury list includes RB AJ Dillon (thumb/neck), LG Elgton Jenkins (knee/ankle), LB Isaiah McDuffie (neck), and OLB Preston Smith (ankle), who would not have practiced on Tuesday.

Jaire Alexander (shoulder/ankle), who reinjured his ankle in the Dallas game, could have practiced on Tuesday, although teams had the day off.  DT Kenny Clark (back), OLB Rashan Gary (knee), RB Aaron Jones (knee/finger), CB Keisean Nixon (toe), S Jonathan Owens (knee), WR Jayden Reed (chest), S Darnell Savage (shoulder/calf), and WR Christian Watson (hamstring) also were listed as able to practice.

LB Quay Walker (shoulder) was a full participant.

The Packers will play the Niners in the Divisional Playoff game in San Francisco with kickoff scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Green Bay's Vogel hired by WNBA team

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball program announced on Wednesday that longtime assistant coach Megan Vogel will leave after the season to pursue what she calls a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Vogel, who has served on the Phoenix staff for 11 seasons and was named associate head coach last year, will join the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury coaching staff this summer.

Head coach Kevin Borseth expressed his excitement for his coach, saying, "She has invested a great deal into our program, and we are better off because of it. The Green Bay tree roots run deep and its branches wide. Our players, and now a coach, get the opportunity to move onto the next level. Green Bay Basketball is very well entrenched in our region, and this adds a national perspective to the far-reaching impact of our program."

Vogel will stay on the staff through the season's end, including Thursday's game at Detroit Mercy at 6 p.m. and Saturday's matchup at Oakland at 1 p.m.

NFL sets time for Packers/49ers game

The Green Bay Packers will have a shorter turnaround to prepare for playoff rival San Francisco in the NFC Divisional Round.

The NFL announced that the Packers will face the 49ers in Santa Clara on Saturday at 7:15 p.m., with the game airing on FOX.

The Packers have succeeded against the 49ers over the last 20 years, but not in the playoffs. The 49ers have won the last four playoff matchups against the Packers, which have not beaten their western rivals since Brett Favre led them to a 25-15 win in 2001.

Packers blow past Cowboys in NFC Wild Card opener

The Green Bay Packers left the over 93,000 in attendance and millions watching at home in shock Sunday evening as they throttled the Dallas Cowboys 48-32.

The Packers scored six touchdowns on its first seven possessions to keep the Cowboys chasing them all night. Aaron Jones scored the game's first two touchdowns from inside the five-yard to stake the Packers to a 14-0 lead, with Dontayvion Wicks catching a touchdown pass from Jordan Love to make it 21-0. The real back-breaking play happened in the final two minutes of the half when Darnell Savage grabbed the second interception of the game against Dak Prescott and took it 64 yards for the defensive score and a 27-0 lead. The Cowboys would score to end the half with a touchdown and start the following half with a field goal to narrow their deficit to 27-10. The Packers kept coming, with Jones trading touchdowns with the Cowboys before Love found Romeo Doubs and Luke Musgrave for touchdowns to make it 48-16 early in the fourth quarter. A pair of touchdowns to the Cowboys' Jake Ferguson would pad the stats for Dallas, but it would ultimately end in the Packers' third playoff win at AT&T Stadium, including their Super Bowl XLV win.

Love ended the day shy of a perfect passer rating with 272 yards and three touchdown passes. Jones rushed for 118 yards and three scores, while Doubs led all receivers with six catches for over 150 yards.

The Packers know they will head to San Francisco for the NFC Divisional Round next weekend, but the date and time have not been determined.

Phoenix men keep pace in Horizon League with win vs. Vikings

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team's late run guided them to beat Cleveland State Sunday afternoon 79-71.

The Vikings had the upper hand on the Phoenix for much of the game, taking a 38-35 lead into halftime and a four-point lead with five minutes to go. The Phoenix would go on to score the next 12 points in the contest and build a 72-64 advantage. Free throws would dictate the final score as the Phoenix improved to 6-2 in the Horizon League to tie Oakland at the top.

Noah Reynolds padded his resume to become the Horizon League Player of the Year with a 32-point performance. Foster Wonders scored 15 points with five three-pointers and Elijah Jones registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Tristan Enaruna led the Vikings with 22 points in the loss.

Packers take on Cowboys in playoff opener

The Green Bay Packers will begin their unexpected road to the Super Bowl with a visit to Dallas for an NFC Wild Card matchup against the Cowboys.

The Packers rebounded from a 2-5 start to the season to finish 9-8 with a 17-9 victory over the Chicago Bears. Jordan Love blossomed in his first year as a starter, throwing for over 4,100 yards and 32 touchdowns. His performances against the Bears and the Minnesota Vikings over the last two weeks earned him two Offensive Player of the Week honors and NVP honors from Nickelodeon. Aaron Jones became the first Packers running back since Ahman Green to rush for over 100 yards in three consecutive weeks.

The Cowboys enter the game as the number two seed and the NFC East champions. WR CeeDee Lamb, RG Zach Martin, and K Brandon Aubrey were all recently named All-Pro by the NFL Players Association. The Cowboys have been a tough team to play at AT&T Stadium this season, going a perfect 8-0 while averaging over 35 points per game.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

Gamblers hang on to top Capitols

A power-play goal was all the Green Bay Gamblers needed in their 1-0 win against the Madison Capitols on Saturday night.

Ben Poitras poked in a pass from Libor Nemec and Michael DeAngelo with a man advantage for his 11th goal of the season. Gavin Moffatt stopped all 30 shots he faced in the Gamblers' win.

Phoenix women drub Colonials

A 26-7 run in the third quarter took away any doubt as the Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team won convincingly over Robert  Morris on Saturday. 72-40.

It did not start well for the Phoenix as they were down 5-0 after three minutes of play. The Phoenix would outscore the Colonials 16-4 the rest of the first quarter, a sign of how the rest of the game would go for the home team. The Colonials would get the game to within one point in the second quarter, but an 8-0 Phoenix run would set the wheels in motion for the second rout of the week.

Natalie McNeal led the team with 18 points, while Maddy Schreiber scored 12 points, and Jenna Guyer added 10 points. Simone Morris and Madison O'Dell each scored 11 points in the loss for the Colonials.

The Phoenix improved to 7-0 in the Horizon League, a mark they will bring with them to Michigan next weekend when they play Detroit Mercy on Thursday and Oakland on Saturday.

Phoenix women host Robert Morris Saturday

The Phoenix women will try to stay perfect in the Horizon League while also making it nine straight wins when they welcome Robert Morris to the Kress Event Center on Saturday.

They led nearly wire-to-wire in their 85-47 win over Youngstown State Thursday night. The Phoenix registered at least 21 points in the first three quarters while limiting the Penguins to less than 25 percent shooting from the field, including 15 percent from behind the arc. Three Phoenix players scored in double figures, led by  Jasmine Kondrakiewicz's 16 points, Cassie Schiltz's 15 points, and Natalie McNeal's 14 points.

The Colonials dropped the first leg of their Wisconsin swing with a 73-58 loss to Milwaukee on Thursday. Tuana Coskun led the team with 12 points.

Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.

Packers release final injury report ahead of Cowboys tilt

The Green Bay Packers' injury list may read like a phone book, but the organization made it appear that most of them will be able to play in Sunday's NFC Wild Card matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder/ankle) and receiver Christian Watson (hamstring) are listed as questionable according to Packers.com  while running back AJ Dillon (thumb/neck) is listed as doubtful. Linebacker De'Vondre Campbell (neck), receiver Romeo Doubs (chest), linebacker Isaiah McDuffie (concussion/neck), guard Elgton Jenkins (knee/ankle), running back Aaron Jones (knee/finger), tight end Luke Musgrave (kidney), center Josh Myers (neck), safety Jonathan Owens (knee), receiver Jayden Reed (chest), guard Sean Rhyan (elbow), safety Darnell Savage (shoulder), defensive lineman T.J. Slaton (knee/foot), linebacker Preston Smith (ankle), tackle Zach Tom (finger), linebacker Quay Walker (shoulder) and running back Emanuel Wilson (shoulder) were all listed. Still, it appears that they are all expected to play.

The Cowboys' list was much shorter on Friday with cornerback Stephon Gilmore (shoulder), defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins (ankle), guard Tyler Smith (foot), defensive end Dorance Amstrong (ankle), safety Malik Hooker (ankle), guard Zack Martin (veteran rest), and tackle Tyron Smith (veteran rest) all expected to play. Quarterback Cooper Rush is the only question mark after he came down with an illness.

Phoenix women dominate Penguins

The  Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team made it eight straight wins as they led nearly wire-to-wire in their 85-47 win over Youngstown State Thursday night.

The Phoenix registered at least 21 points in the first three quarters while limiting the Penguins to less than 25 percent shooting from the field, including 15 percent from behind the arc. The Penguins led 3-2 in the opening minutes, but the Phoenix outscored them 22-11 the rest of the quarter to bring the game back to reality.

Three Phoenix players scored in double figures, led by  Jasmine Kondrakiewicz's 16 points, Cassie Schiltz's 15 points, and Natalie McNeal's 14 points. Abby Liber and Haley Thierry each scored 10 points to lead the Penguins in the loss.

The  Phoenix are back in action on Saturday against Robert Morris at 1 p.m.

Douglas breaks halftime deadlock, leads Green Bay men past IUPUI

A career-high for freshman David Douglas, Jr. helped the Green Bay men's basketball team break a 29-29 halftime score to win 68-58 over IUPUI.

The Phoenix had to fight hard to even the score, going on a 14-2 run in the final minutes to tie the game after falling behind 22-10 early. A 14-6 run to start the second half put the Phoenix in the driver's seat for the rest of the game.

Douglas nearly doubled his previous career-high with 26 points. Noah Reynolds scored 19 points, while Elijah Jones registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Vincent Brady II paced the Jaguars with 15 points.

The Phoenix will stop at home for a game on Sunday against Cleveland State on Sunday before visiting Wright State and Northern Kentucky next week.

Gamblers coach selected to lead at All-American Game

A familiar face will be behind the bench at the 2024 Chipotle All-American game on January 15th.

Mike Leone, head coach and general manager of the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers, will serve as head coach for Team Blue, while Jason Kersner, head coach of the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers, will be the head coach for Team White. The game will feature the top 45 prospects from the USHL eligible for the 2024 NHL Draft. According to the Gamblers, Leone served three seasons as an assistant coach for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program. He has also served as an assistant for Team USA at several international competitions, including the 2022 and 2023 World Junior A Challenge, the 2022 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, the 2022 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament, the 2021 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship, the 2019 Under-17 Four Nations Tournament, and the Under-17 World Hockey Challenge. Leone served as an assistant coach at the 2023 Chipotle All-American Game.

Despite a good record and Leone coaching one of the teams, no Gamblers players were selected to participate in the game.

Phoenix men avoid Packers, move Sunday's start time

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball is not making you choose between them and the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.

The Green Bay Athletics Department announced Monday that it would be moving its Sunday matinee's start time against Cleveland State from 2 p.m. to noon. The game will still be played at the Resch Center. With the change of start time, you should still be able to catch the 3:30 p.m. kickoff for the Packers playoff game against Dallas.

Gamblers, Rough Riders split weekend set

Neither team defended home ice over the weekend as the Rough Riders won Friday's game 4-3 in Green Bay and the Gamblers returned the favor in Cedar Rapids with a 3-2 win.

In Friday's game, Ben Poitras scored the first and last goals of the game for the Gamblers with the Rough Riders scoring four of the five goals between to earn the victory. Michael DeAngelo added a goal and an assist while Gavin Moffatt stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced.

On Saturday, Blake Bechen scored two goals for the Gamblers, including the game winner six minutes into the third period to break the 2-2 tie between the two squads. Gavin Moffatt withstood the pressure from the Rough Riders, stopping 32 of the 34 shot he faced.

Phoenix basketball teams split final two games of weekend set

The Green Bay Phoenix men came up short, while the women secured another double-digit win to close out a weekend of traveling for the two basketball teams.

In the men's 79-73 loss to Oakland on Saturday, the Phoenix set a program record with 15 made three-pointers in a single game. The team's proficiency from behind the arc kept the proceedings close, but the Golden Grizzlies' Trey Townsend's 28-point, 11-rebound double-double proved to be too much in the end for the team to secure a rare sweep of Detroit. Five Phoenix players reached double figures in the loss, led by David Douglas Jr.'s 15 points.

The women were given a scare in the second half, but the Phoenix kept their undefeated Horizon League mark alive with a 75-63 win over Wright State on Sunday. The Phoenix outscored the host Raiders 18-6 in the first quarter and had a lead of over 20 points entering the second half. The Raiders would whittle away at the lead in the third quarter, but the Phoenix were able to thwart any comeback attempts in the final period. Maddy Schreiber led the Phoenix with 20 points while Cassie Schiltz and Natalie McNeal each chipped in 15 points in the win.

Playoffs added to Packers' to-do list after Bears win

Some of the other activities you can do in Green Bay will have to wait at least one more weekend after the Packers beat the Chicago Bears 17-9 to clinch the final spot in the NFL playoffs.

The Packers kept their punter on the bench, but miscues kept the Bears in the game throughout the evening at Lambeau Field. After the Bears opened the game with a field goal, a miss by Anders Carlson kept the score at 3-0 entering the second quarter. The Packers would finally get on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter when Jordan Love registered his first of two touchdown passes to Dontayvion Wicks to make it 7-3. They would foil another opportunity to trade field goals at the end of the half when the Bears' Tariq Stevenson made one of his many standout defensive plays when he denied Wicks a chance to go upfield, making the clock run out on the half with the Packers up by a single point.

The Packers would open the third quarter with another Love connection to Wicks to make it 14-6, but saw another drive end prematurely when Stevenson stripped the ball from Love to set up a Bears field goal to start the fourth quarter. Carlson would redeem himself on the very next drive before the Packers would waste away the final six minutes to return to the playoffs after a year away.

Love threw for 316 yards and two scores, while Aaron Jones rushed for another 111 as the Packers outgained the Bears 432-192. Part of the discrepancy was thanks to five Packers' sacks, causing Justin Fields to throw for less than 150 yards despite an efficient 11-15 passing day.

The Packers will return to the 3:25 p.m. time slot next Sunday when they open the NFL Playoffs against the Dallas Cowboys.

Packers' season comes down to rivalry game vs. Bears

More than bragging rights are on the line Sunday when the Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears.

Both teams enter the game playing some of their best football. The Packers have won two straight games, including an impressive 33-10 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on New Year's Eve. Jordan Love ended the game with 256 yards passing, three touchdowns through the air, and one on the ground. Aaron Jones didn't find the endzone, but he did register his second straight 100-yard game with 120 yards on 20 carries. The Packers are in the playoffs with a win but would require a combination of other teams' losses if they lose to their longtime foe.

The Bears have also won two straight and three of their last four after throttling the Atlanta Falcons 37-17 on the lakefront. Justin Fields is making it hard for his employers to decide whether to keep him or use their acquired No. 1 pick from the Carolina Panthers on a franchise quarterback. He threw for one touchdown and rushed for another in the victory. The Bears were officially eliminated from playoff contention last week when the Packers beat the Vikings, but they would love to return the favor to their Northern rivals.

Kickoff is set for 3:25 p.m.

Phoenix women notch win vs. Norse

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team doubled up the host Northern Kentucky Norse and never looked back in an 86-56 victory Friday night.

Bailey Butler was a big reason why for the success as she posted career highs in points scored (20) and steals (6) in the game that was out of hand before halftime. The Phoenix put the game to rest in the second quarter when they outscored the Norse 19-5. They were able to expand their lead further in the third quarter before the Norse were able to nibble away at the lead. Butler was not the only one with a big day in the scoring department as Natalie McNeal, Natalie Andersen, and Callie Genke all scored 12 points apiece, Maddy Schreiber registered 11 points, and Jenna Guyer helped out with 10 points.

The Phoenix women play again on Sunday against Wright State while the men are in Oakland on Saturday.

Gamblers, Rough Riders play home-and-home series

The Green Bay Gamblers and the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders will take turns playing host this weekend beginning on Friday.

The Gamblers will take the first night and host the Rough Riders for a 7:05 puck drop at the Resch Center. Last weekend, the Gamblers scored three goals in a decisive third period to beat Team USA in their Saturday matchup 5-1 after falling late to Team USA 2-1 in OT the night before. The Rough Riders, which lost both of its games last weekend, will host the Gamblers at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Phoenix men topple Titans

The Green Bay Phoenix men's basketball team led wire-to-wire in its 69-51 win over Detroit Mercy on the road.

As if the win wasn't impressive enough, they did so without Noah Reynolds or Clarence Cummings III leading the team in scoring. That title went to Foster Wonders, who came off the bench and hit four three-pointers in the first half, one of which was a buzzer-beater that sent the Phoenix into the locker room at halftime with a 34-23 lead.

The Phoenix kept flirting with a 20-point advantage for much of the second half thanks to keeping the Titans below 33 percent shooting on the night, including less than 27 percent from behind the arc. The Phoenix, meanwhile nearly made half of its shots while holding a 45-23 rebounding edge. Wonders scored a game-high 14 points, with Preston Ruedinger chipping in with 11 points. Donovann Toatley led the Titans with 14 points in the loss.

The Phoenix women will take on Northern Kentucky on Friday at 6 p.m. while the men will play at Oakland Saturday for a 2 p.m. matinee.

Phoenix men kick off weekend away for basketball teams

After an extended stay at the Resch Center and Kress Events Center, the Green Bay Phoenix basketball teams are out of town this weekend to continue Horizon League play.

The Phoenix men kick off things on Thursday with a game at Detroit Mercy at 6 p.m. The Titans switched spots with the Phoenix in the conference cellar, failing to win a game in 15 tries, including a 0-4 record in the Horizon League. The Phoenix, meanwhile, swept their two Horizon League games last weekend against Wright State and Robert Morris University. Noah Reynolds also won many accolades, including Horizon League Player of the Week. The Phoenix men will continue their Detroit swing on Saturday when they play Oakland at 2 p.m. The Golden Grizzlies are in a similar spot as the Phoenix, boasting a 7-8 record, including a 2-2 mark in the Horizon League.

The Phoenix women will return to action on Friday when they play Northern Kentucky at 6 p.m. and Wright State on Sunday at noon. Led by Luxemburg-Casco alum and current Horizon League Player of the Week Cassie Schiltz, the Phoenix posted a pair of double-digit victories against Purdue Fort Wayne and Cleveland State, both of which had perfect conference marks before entering the Kress Events Center.

Packers shut out of Pro Bowl Games

Several roster changes will have to occur if you want to see some of your favorite Green Bay Packers players in next month's Pro Bowl Games.

For the first time since 2017, no Packers players were named to the Pro Bowl, which has morphed from a standalone exhibition to a series of mini-games. They are one of four teams to have that dubious distinction.

Rashan Gary is a first alternate at outside linebacker, with defensive lineman Kenny Clark, guard Elgton Jenkins, cornerback Jaire Alexander, and return specialist Keisean Nixon also on the docket just in case the Pro Bowl roster fluxes in their general direction.

The Pro Bowl Games is scheduled to take place on February 4th in Orlando.

L-C alum Schiltz chosen as Horizon League Player of the Week

Luxemburg-Casco alumnus and UWGB Phoenix starting guard Cassie Schiltz was named the Horizon League Player of the Week.  Schiltz carried the Phoenix to two big wins this past week with wins over Cleveland State on Saturday and Purdue-Fort Wayne on New Year’s Day.

Scoring a career-high 27 points with six three-pointers on Saturday, the Luxemburg native scored ten points and added nine assists on Monday.

Schiltz, a red-shirt junior and 2019 graduate of Luxemburg-Casco High School, is averaging 12.0 points per game for UWGB this season.

After the two teams exchanged blows in the first half, the Phoenix outscored the Mastodons 43-24 to stay perfect in the Horizon League. Spurring the blowout was a 11-3 run to close out the third quarter, a hot streak the Phoenix would carry into the fourth quarter,
