Spots available for Shanty Days "Battle on the Beach" Volleyball Tournament

You still have time to grab a spot on Crescent Beach for the Shanty Days "Battle on the Beach" Volleyball Tournament next weekend.

This is a Pool Play Round Robin style Tournament, which determines the seeding for the bracket-style playoff tournament. The winner gets $500 while the top eight teams are eligible for cash prizes. Every team is guaranteed at least seven matches consisting of two games per match if the tournament field is a full 16 teams.

You can click on this link to see more of the rules and registration information for the Shanty Days "Battle on the Beach" Volleyball Tournament, which is scheduled for August 12th. Last year's tournament was canceled due to a soaking rain storm that postponed the parade and left other festival events delayed.

Packers resume training camp on Monday

The Green Bay Packers will hit the practice field once again on Monday after a day off on Sunday.

Monday will mark the first day in pads for the Packers since they wrapped up their regular season against the Detroit Lions in January. They opened training camp with four straight practices, though Friday's session was classified as a walk-through that featured the installation of some schemes and it was not open to the public.

Saturday's practice featured some of Jordan Love's best work of the offseason, very nearly leading his number one offense to a two-minute drill touchdown. Anders Carlson may have opened the door for the return of Mason Crosby after a disappointing day that saw him miss several attempts.

The public practice schedule for this week is as follows:

Monday, July 31st at 10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, Aug. 1st at 10:30 a.m.

Thursday, Aug. 3rd at 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, Aug. 5th at 7:30 p.m. (Family Night inside Lambeau Field)

Rafters boat race Rockers

Green Bay Rockers pitchers struggled to keep the ball in the yard on a sun-drenched afternoon in Ashwaubenon, losing to the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 9-1.

Andrew Galason homered twice while Jorge De Goti and Aidan Brewer each left Capital Credit Union Park once during the game as the Rafters outhit the Rockers 11-4. Brycen Parrish mowed down Rockers batters until the sixth inning when they pieced together two hits and scored on an error to make it 4-1. The Rafters would respond with three runs in the seventh and single tallies in the eighth and ninth to put the game even further out of reach. AJ Anzai had two hits in the loss for the Rockers.

On Monday, the Rockers head south on I-41 to face their rivals Fond du Lac Dock Spiders at 6:35 p.m.

Jimenez Tosses a Gem to Beat Kernels

Edwin Jimenez came through with the starting pitching performance the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers bullpen needed on Sunday afternoon against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  Jimenez pitched 7-1/3 innings with three walks and ten strikeouts as he carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning to lead the Rattlers to a 4-0 win.

The Wisconsin relievers needed a break after a logging 31 of the 47 innings during the first five games of the series with the Kernels.  Jimenez was up to the task.

Jimenez walked the second batter of the game.  Then, struck out the next two batters.  He would walk the lead-off batter in the second before retiring the next ten batters he faced.  That string was broken up by a walk with one out in the fifth inning.  He stranded that runner, and by the time Jimenez took the mound for the sixth inning, the Rattlers (16-14 second half, 42-51 overall) had built a 4-0 lead.

Jose Acosta put the Timber Rattlers in front with a two-out, three-run home run to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning.  The homer was the third of the season for Acosta.

Wisconsin added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth.  Joe Gray Jr started the rally with a one-out single.  Hendry Mendez ripped a double past first and into the corner to allow Gray to score.

In the sixth, Jimenez retired the side in order with two strikeouts.  He also set down the side in order in the top of the seventh while recording his tenth strikeout of the game.  Jimenez matched his single-game high as a professional for strikeouts.  He also had ten Ks in a game against Kannapolis on August 4, 2022 as a member of the Carolina Mudcats.

The Kernels (18-12, 58-38) broke up the no-hit bid with one out in the eighth.  Jimenez got the first out with a grounder to short.  Dalton Shuffield was next, and he grounded a single into left field.  Shuffield had been 0-for-6 in the series to that point, but his single marked the end of the game for Jimenez.

The fans let out a groan of disappointment after the single by Shuffield, but the mood in the stadium turned to one of appreciation with an ovation for Jimenez as he left the mound for the home dugout to make way for reliever Shane Smith.

Smith got the final two outs in the eighth and the first two outs in the ninth before a walk and a throwing error on an infield single put runners on the corners.  He closed out the game with a grounder to third.  Smith has allowed one run in 12-2/3 innings over seven appearances with Wisconsin.

The Rattlers recorded their third shutout of the season.  Sunday’s game was just the fourth time Cedar Rapids has been shutout this season.  The Kernels had not been held scoreless since May 11.

Jimenez became the first Rattler this season to record ten strikeouts in a game.  He also became the first Wisconsin starting pitcher to record an out in the eighth inning of a game this season.  The last time a non-rehab starter recorded an out in the eighth inning of a game that started and ended on the same day was Bowden Francis, who when eight innings against the Bowling Green Hot Rods on July 21, 2018.

A note about those qualifiers.  Zach Davies pitched a nine-inning complete game on a rehab assignment from the Milwaukee Brewers in a game at Clinton on August 27, 2018.  Aaron Ashby pitched eight innings in a game against Beloit in 2019, but it started at Pohlman Field on April 17 and ended at Neuroscience Group Field on June 7.

Sunday’s win gave the Timber Rattlers a 4-2 series win in the six-game set with the Kernels.  Wisconsin is 4-6-7 in series this season.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They return to action on Tuesday night at Four Winds Field in South Bend, Indiana to start a series with the South Bend Cubs.  Nate Peterson (0-0, 2.25) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  Game time is 6:05pm CDT.

Egg Harbor hosts league leading Sister Bay on 105.1 The GOAT

The weather will be the complete opposite of the last time these two teams matched up, as in the first matchup the first pitch temperature was 53 degrees. No matter the weather, Sister Bay and Egg Harbor are set to bring the heat as two postseason hopefuls match up in Egg Harbor.

Egg Harbor is coming off of a crushing loss to Washington Island 6-5. The Indians had a commanding lead early, as much as 5-0 in the first inning, but had it slowly chipped away by the Islanders, pushing Egg Harbor just outside of the postseason picture with three games left to play. Cory Fuller, Cody Giesseman and Brady Kita have been some big names for the Indians so far this season, but will need to get shutdown pitching to stick with the Bays on Sunday.

Sister Bay blanked Baileys Harbor 8-0 last Sunday, moving them one step closer to the regular season crown and the first seed in the playoffs. It has been all Bays so far this season, and it was all Bays in the first matchup, as they won 9-2. Tom Sawyer had the big day for the Bays as he drove in three RBIs in the first two innings, and Sam Forkert was lights out as usual. If Sister Bay manages to take the win over Egg Harbor, they could clinch the league in front of their home fans next week.

Gary Barta and Reece Robillard will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com from Egg Harbor beginning at 1:15 with the pregame show and 1:30 pm for first pitch between the Indians and the Bays.

Sharpe, Holmgren named Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists

Two members of the Green Bay Packers teams of the 1990s took another step closer to Canton last week.

Former receiver Sterling Sharpe and former head coach Mike Holmgren were both named semifinalists to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Sharpe is one of the senior committee's dozen semifinalists while Holmgren is the same in the coach/contributor category. Below are who they are competing against for a spot in Canton next year according to Packers.com:

Senior category (last game in pro football played no later than 1998): Ken Anderson, Maxie Baughan, Roger Craig, Randy Gradishar, Joe Jacoby, Albert Lewis, Steve McMichael, Eddie Meador, Art Powell, Sterling Sharpe, Otis Taylor and Al Wistert.

Coach/contributor category: Tom Coughlin, Mike Holmgren, Frank "Bucko" Kilroy, Robert Kraft, Buddy Parker, Dan Reeves, Art Rooney Jr., Marty Schottenheimer, Mike Shanahan, Clark Shaughnessy, Lloyd Wells and John Wooten.

Mets washout Cubs on 104.1 WRLU

Mother Nature forced to end the game after six innings of play, but it was the Maplewood Mets that forced their hand in a 6-0 win over the host Institute Cubs on a soggy Friday night.

The Mets wasted no time to get on the scoreboard with Adam Gutschow knocking in a run in the first inning to make it 1-0. The Mets would put the game out of reach in the third inning with Jayden Diller, Gutschow, and Zach Marchant all scoring. The Mets tacked on two more in the fourth inning with Jeremiah Janke scoring on a sacrifice fly and Drew Price taking home on a passed ball.

Janke did his part to keep the Cubs off the basepaths, allowing no runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out 11 in the process.

The umpire sent both teams into their respective dugouts shortly after Kordell Draves stepped into the box. The game was delayed only briefly before the umpires inspected the field and made the decision with the teams' managers to call it after six innings.

Sunday's games include Sister Bay at Egg Harbor (airing on 105.1 The GOAT), Washington Island visiting Kolberg, and Baileys Harbor hosting West Jacksonport.

Wisconsin and Cedar Rapids Suspended on Friday night tied 3-3

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Cedar Rapids Kernels almost made it.  The teams battled each other and an approaching thunderstorm on Saturday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The storm won as the tarp was placed on the field after the final out of the top of the ninth inning with the score tied 3-3.

Friday’s game will resume at 6:00pm on Saturday at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium with the Rattlers coming to the plate in the bottom of the ninth.  The parking lot opens at 4:00pm with the gates to the stadium opening at 5:00pm.

There will be a thirty-minute break between the end of suspended game and the start of the regularly scheduled game.  The regularly scheduled game will start no earlier than 6:40pm and is set for nine innings.

Eduardo García started the bottom of the second inning on Friday night with a check-swing grounder that rolled into shallow right.  García turned that into a hustle double.  Then, Darrien Miller walked.  A passed ball moved both runners up a base.  Cedar Rapids starting pitcher Kyle Jones threw a wild pitch moments later to allow García to score the first run of the game.

Tyler Woessner, Wisconsin’s starting pitcher, retired the first nine batters he faced before running into trouble in the fourth inning.  Three walks loaded the bases with one out.  Woessner got a strikeout for the second out and was ahead of Andrew Cossetti with a 1-2 count.  Cossetti put the ball in play and got a grounder off Woessner.  The ball trickled behind the mound and Woessner could not pick the ball up cleanly as two runners scored to give the Kernels a 2-1 lead.

Wisconsin tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.  García started the inning with a walk and Miller followed with a bunt single.  Jose Acosta singled sharply to right to load the bases with one out.  Terence Doston was next and he lined a single to left to score García with the tying run.

The Kernels took the lead in the top of the sixth inning against reliever Justin King.  Emmanuel Rodriguez doubled and took third on a flyout to right.  King got the second out with a popup, but through a wild pitch to all Rodriguez to score for a 3-2 lead.

Joe Gray Jr was hit by a pitch from Malik Barrington with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.  Gray stole second, scrambled for third after the throw from Cossetti bounced into center.  Rodriguez fielded the ball and tried to get Gray at third. Instead, the ball made it into the Cedar Rapids dugout and Gray was able to trot home with the tying run.

The game remained tied through the top of the ninth.  The grounds crew raced to put the tarp on the field just after Sam Gardner got a strikeout for the final out of the top of the ninth inning.  The tarp was in place just before the heavy rain started to fall.  Friday’s contest was suspended thirty minutes after the weather halted play.

In the regularly scheduled game, Stiven Cruz (4-5, 6.78) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers with Christian MacLeod (1-0, 3.22) named as the starter for the Kernels.

Gamblers prepare for 30th season

The Green Bay Gamblers are preparing to roll out the red carpet for a special reason this fall.

The 2023-2024 campaign marks the 30th year of Gamblers hockey in the United States Hockey League, which began at the Brown County Arena before eventually moving down Armed Forces Drive to their current arena, the Resch Center. It brought hockey back to Titletown after a void left by the Bobcats when they folded in the early 1980s.

To commemorate the anniversary, the Gamblers released a special logo this week. Single-game tickets go on sale Tuesday, August 1st at 10:00 a.m. ahead of their home opener on October 7th against Dubuque.

Cubs, Mets look for bounce back on 105.1 The GOAT

The Institute Cubs and the Maplewood Mets hope Friday night cures their ails when they face each other in Door County League baseball action.

The Mets still have an outside chance at a playoff spot if they can end the season on a hot streak with a little help. West Jacksonport dealt a blow to those hopes last week when they topped the Mets 9-6 at home. Kordell Draves kept the Mets in the game with a pair of homers, complemented by Tory Jandrin's own home run in the fifth inning.

The Cubs are playing for pride at this point of the season as their last game under the lights against Baileys Harbor provided them with their only win of the season. Quin Schram kept up his batting average with another successful day at the plate, but that was about it as the Cubs fell to Kolberg 28-1.

Tim Kowols and Reece Robillard will have the call on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 7:30 p.m. Below you will find the rest of DCL slate for the weekend, including our broadcast of Sister Bay/Egg Harbor on Sunday.

Mallards wait out weather, Rockers for win

It was weather for a duck and it was a night for the Mallards as Madison snuck out a victory over the Green Bay Rockers Thursday night 4-3.

The Mallards struck first in the sixth inning, but the Rockers responded with three runs in the bottom half of the frame thanks to a drop-third strike and a two-run single by Cooper Kelly. The Mallards would chip away at that lead, tying the game in the eighth inning with two runs and winning the game in the ninth inning on an RBI single by Nick Williams. The Rockers were set down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to send the team to the loss that included a rain delay that pushed the game's conclusion to well past 10:30 p.m.

The two teams face each other again Friday night at Capital Credit Union at 6:35 p.m.

Wisconsin Wins With Moore

Robert Moore picked his moments for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Thursday night against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.  Moore drove in three runs for Wisconsin including a victory-from-the-jaws-of-defeat, two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the tenth to send fans home happy from Neuroscience Group Field after a 4-3 victory.

The Rattlers (14-13 second half, 40-51 overall) took the lead in the bottom of the second.  Darrien Miller grounded into a force out at second with runners on the corners and beat the throw to first to avoid an inning-ending double play to allow Joe Gray Jr to score.

Brandon Woodruff, who was making his second rehab start with the Rattlers, retired the first six batters he faced before he gave up a lead-off double to Misael Urbina in the third.  Noah Miller, brother of Woodruff’s Milwaukee teammate Owen Miller, got the tying run home on a two-out, bad hop single.

Moore put Wisconsin right back in front with a 404’ home run to right.  Moore’s seventh homer of the season made it 2-1.

Woodruff went back out for the fourth inning and gave up two singles but worked through the inning on a 6-4-3 double play and a popup.  The Milwaukee right-hander allowed a run on four hits with no walks and four strikeouts with 52 pitches/26 strikes.

Alexander Cornielle took over for Woodruff to start the top of the fifth inning and retired the first two batters he faced.  However, an error allowed Keoni Cavaco to reach base.  Then, Miller lined a ball to the wall in left.  Je’Von Ward made a leaping catch but could not hold onto the ball after hitting the wall.  Cavaco scored from first on Miller’s double.

The Wisconsin bats went silent after the third inning.  Fifteen batters in a row were retired from the third until Moore drew a two-out walk in the eighth inning against reliever Jordan Carr.

Jheremy Vargas singled to start the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Miguel Rodriguez.  Vargas stole second and was at third with two outs, but Wisconsin could not score so the game went to extra innings.

Miller gave the Kernels the lead on the first pitch from Tanner Shears in the top of the tenth.  Miller lashed a single to right to score the placed runner from second base for a 3-2 lead.  Shears walked the next batter before settling in to end the inning with two strikeouts and a popup.

It took some time for the Rattlers in the bottom of the tenth against Rodriguez, but they got there.  Eduardo García was placed at second and Miller worked a walk to open the inning.  A slow tapper back to the mound moved both runners into scoring position and that allowed Wisconsin to send Terence Doston in as a pinch-runner for Miller at second.  Rodriguez got the second out of the inning on a strikeout and that brought Moore to the plate with the game on the line.

Moore lined the first pitch from Rodriguez to right field.  García scored easily to tie the game.  Doston raced for home, too, and scored the winning run without a play at the plate.  Then, the race was on to catch Moore for the celebration of Wisconsin’s fifth walkoff win of the season.

Game four of the series is Friday night.  Tyler Woessner (5-5, 3.80) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin.  The Kernels have named Kyle Jones (5-4, 4.46) as their starter.  Game time is 6:40pm.

DCBL sees teams on the bubble in last few weeks of season

Like most seasons, there has not been a shortage of excitement throughout the Door County Baseball League. From Sister Bay being a handful of wins away from a Regular Season Championship, to a four team bubble watch with just three weeks left, the rest of the season is sure to be filled with excitement.

With Sister Bay nearing the championship and locking up the top seed in the postseason, and Kolberg trending towards the two seed, two spots in the August playoffs are up for grabs. Washington Island, West Jacksonport, Egg Harbor, and Maplewood are the four teams in the hunt for those spots, and just two total matchups against each other combined will have this race wild down to the last week.

We start with Washington Island, who is currently sitting in third place with a 7-4 record coming off a come from behind win over Egg Harbor 6-5. The Islanders have done their winning in many different games, winning in low scoring fashion, or showing off their high-powered offense, especially earlier in the season with a 20-6 victory over Maplewood. With nearly a 1.5 game cushion of a lead, the Islanders will rely on that cushion with a tough schedule consisting of games against Sister Bay and West Jacksonport, before finishing the season with Baileys Harbor.

West Jacksonport currently holds the final playoff spot going into the weekend, sitting at 7-4 behind the Islanders due to a 9-3 loss on Fathers Day. The Ports took care of business last Sunday against Maplewood on 105.1 The GOAT, winning 9-6. Drew Tanck has been strong as the starter for the Ports, as the duo of Tanck and Woody Schartner have led the way. West Jacksonport will also have a tough schedule down the stretch, as after starting with Baileys Harbor this week, they will play host to Washington Island and Kolberg.

Egg Harbor has been lingering on the edge of the postseason picture the past few weeks, but currently sit on the outside looking in at 6-5. The Indians have gone on winning and losing streaks this season, and have put themselves in position to sneak into the playoffs after a 2-3 start to the season. The Kita’s have been a big part of that, as Brady and Nick Kita have been sources of offense for the Indians. Egg Harbor may have the more favorable remaining schedule of any bubble team, with Sister Bay, Maplewood and Institute remaining.

Finally, Maplewood is not mathematically eliminated yet, but will need a lot of things to go right if they want to sneak into the playoffs, with their record currently sitting at 4-7. The Mets could have used a big upset at West Jacksonport last Sunday to help their cause, but came up short. Jeremiah Jahnke has been a big part of their success as of late, as the left hander has given them consistently good innings. The Mets will have the same remaining teams as Egg Harbor, as they face Institute, Egg Harbor and Sister Bay.

The final few weeks will have many playoff implications, and 105.1 The GOAT and NEW Radio Sports Network will have you covered with five games in the next three weeks.

Blizzard players win postseason awards

The Indoor Football League has honored two Green Bay Blizzard players with postseason honors this week.

Defensive lineman Anthony Hayes was selected to the 2023 IFL All-Rookie Team after collecting 3.5 sacks and 10.5 tackles for a loss in his inaugural year. Wide receiver Marquise Irvin was placed on the All-IFL Second Team after catching 71 balls for 886 yards and 16 touchdowns. His touchdown total was a top-10 mark in the IFL.

Wisconsin Erases 7-0 Deficit to Beat Cedar Rapids 8-7

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were down 7-0 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels after the top of the second inning on Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.  The Rattlers snapped a four-game losing streak by rallying past the top team in the West Division of the Midwest League for an 8-7 victory.

The Kernels (17-9 second half, 57-35 overall) knocked Wisconsin starting pitcher Cameron Wagoner out of the game in the first inning and scored six runs to take a commanding lead.

Wagoner struck out the first batter he faced, but walked the next two and gave up an infield single to load the bases.  A walk to Misael Urbina drove in the first run of the game.  Then, Andrew Cossetti cleared the bases with a double and the Kernels were up 4-0.  Cossetti is 3-for-3 with three doubles against Wagoner this season.

The second out was recorded on a strikeout, but that was all for Wagoner, who threw 37 pitches in the inning.

Jeferson Morales greeted Wisconsin reliever Miguel Guerrero with a two-run homer and the Kernels were up 6-0.

Cedar Rapids added an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Kala’i Rosario after Emmanuel Rodriguez reached on a three-base error to start the second inning.

CJ Culpepper, the Kernels starting pitcher, entered Wednesday’s game with a 2-0 record in three Midwest League starts.  He had not allowed a run in his first sixteen innings in the league.  That changed in the bottom of the second inning with a lot of help from the Cedar Rapids defense.

Hendry Mendez started the frame with a walk.  Culpepper got the first out and appeared to get Alex Hall to ground into an inning-ending double play.  However, Morales was called for catcher’s interference to allow Hall to reach.  Jheremy Vargas followed with a single to load the bases before Terence Doston walked to force in Wisconsin’s first run of the inning.

Robert Moore was next, and he sent a grounder to second that could have been an inning-ending double play, too.  However, the throw from Mikey Perez sailed all the way to the left field foul line.  Three runs scored on the play and the Rattlers were down 7-4.

Matt Wood kept the rally going with an RBI single to score Moore.  Culpepper would leave the game after giving up another single, but the Rattlers would not score again in the inning.

Eduardo García, who was just activated off the Wisconsin injured list this morning, got the Rattlers to within a run with a massive home run off the top of the hitting background beyond the wall in center.  The homer, García’s fourth of the season, was measured at 447’.

The Timber Rattlers (39-51, 13-13) made it all the way back to even in the sixth inning.  Reliever Alejandro Hidalgo walked the bases loaded with one out.  Niklas Rimmel got the second out but walked Joe Gray Jr on four pitches to force in the tying run.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Wood was hit by a pitch from John Wilson, the fifth Cedar Rapids pitcher of the game.  Wood was replaced by pinch runner Je’Von Ward and Ward moved to second when Wilson walked Martínez.  Gray followed with a fly ball deep to center that Rodriguez caught with a leaping grab at the wall to move Ward to third base.

Mendez was next and he sent a high chopper to the mound.  Wilson got the out at second, but Mendez just beat the throw to force to allow Ward to score the go-ahead run.

Shane Smith, who entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh and kept the game tied through the top of the eighth, worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn his first win as a Timber Rattler.

Guerrero worked 4-1/3 innings out of the Wisconsin bullpen and didn’t allow a run after the second inning.  Michele Vassalotti worked a 1-2-3 sixth and retired the first two batters of the seventh before loading the bases and needing assistance from Smith to get out of the frame.  Smith walked one and struck out three over the final 2-1/3 innings to finish the game.

The Rattlers topped their biggest comeback of the season with their win on Wednesday.  Wisconsin had rallied from a 6-0 deficit after the top of the seventh inning to beat the Peoria Chiefs 8-7 in ten innings on May 30.

Game three of the series is Thursday night.  Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff will make his second rehabilitation start for the Timber Rattlers in the game against Cedar Rapids.  The Kernels have named Zebby Matthews 3-1, 5.02) as their starting pitcher.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Packers practices start, make roster moves

The veterans for the Green Bay Packers reported to camp on Tuesday and are set for the first formal practice of training camp Wednesday to open the 2023 campaign.  Tuesday, the Packers announced that linebacker Tariq Carpenter and safety Tarvarius Moore were placed on the non-football injury list to begin camp.

Carpenter is a 2022 seventh-round pick while Moore signed with the Packers last March after playing for the San Francisco 49ers.

Both players count towards the 90-man roster but may be activated at any time.  No timetable was given for returning to practice for either player.

Timber Rattlers one-hit by Cedar Rapids in 4-1 loss

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were held to one hit in their first home game since July 9 as the Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Rattlers 4-1 at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium to spoil Wisconsin’s return home.

The Kernels (17-8 second half, 57-34 overall) took the lead in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Kyler Fedko.  Cedar Rapids loaded the bases with one out on two singles and a walk.  Fedko flew out to right on the first pitch of his plate appearance.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Nate Peterson, making his Timber Rattlers debut, didn’t give up anything else in the inning or in the rest of his outing which lasted four innings

The Rattlers (12-13, 38-51) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning.  Je’Von Ward walked and stole second.  Robert Moore singled to right with two outs to drive in Ward to tie the score 1-1 against Cedar Rapids starter Cory Lewis.  That was the only hit and the only run for Wisconsin in the game.

Peterson left after four innings with the score tied 1-1.  Then, Cedar Rapids got the lead back in the top of the fifth.

Andrew Cossetti doubled to start the inning against reliever Nick Merkel.  Fedko followed with a single to put runners on the corners.  Merkel got the first out with a strikeout but gave up a sacrifice fly to Emmanuel Rodriguez to score Cossetti with the go-ahead run.

Kala’i Rosario hit a lead-off home run in the top of the eighth inning.  It was hit fourteenth home run of the season and gave the Kernels a 3-1 lead.

Cossetti added to the Kernels lead with a lead-off homer in the ninth.

Mike Paredes, who relieved Lewis to start the bottom of the sixth, pitched four scoreless, hitless innings for the save.  He walked two and struck out three.

The Kernels extended their winning streak to six games with the win on Tuesday night.  The Rattlers’ losing streak has reached four games.

Game two of the series is Wednesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field.  Cameron Wagoner (2-11, 6.95) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers.  CJ Culpepper (2-0, 0.00) has been named as the starter for the Kernels.  Game time is 12:10pm.

Changes take centerstage at Packers shareholders

"Things are a-changin'" at 1265 Lombardi Avenue, and the Green Bay Packers acknowledged that during their annual shareholder's meeting on Monday afternoon.

Multiple reports said approximately 7,800 stockholders and their guests attended the annual meeting which highlights the football, business, and charitable operations of the franchise as the only publicly-owned team in professional sports. President and CEO Mark Murphy expressed cautious optimism about new quarterback Jordan Love, saying he is excited about the future but admitting that it may take half the season for Love to find his groove as the team's starter. He preceded those comments by thanking Aaron Rodgers for his 18 years with the franchise and that he looks forward to seeing him on HBO's Hard Knocks next month.

The Packers went into details about its finances, reporting $610.3 million in revenue for the 2022-23 fiscal year, which concluded at the end of March. The team's profit from operations was $68.6 million and their net income was $35.6 million. That was about $9 million and $26 million respectively off from last year. Increased player costs, market volatility, and the London game all contributed to a lower net income for the fiscal year, which concludes in March. The organization went into detail about some of the improvements they have made in recent months, including the larger scoreboards, more grab-and-go concession stands, and new football administration offices.

The Packers also announced  Pro Football and Packers Hall of Famer LeRoy Butler; Laurie Radke, president and CEO of the Greater Green Bay Chamber; Sachin Shivaram, CEO of Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry, and Christopher Stiles, chairman, president and CEO of Morely-Murphy Co. as new members of the team's Board of Directors as voted on by the team's stockholders.

Ports hold off Mets on 105.1 The GOAT

The West Jacksonport Ports kept up their push for a playoff spot with a 9-6 win over the Maplewood Mets on their home diamond.

The Ports took a 3-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a two-run double by Derek Niedzwiecki and an RBI sacrifice fly by Alec Schartner. After Kordell Draves made it a one-run game with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, the Ports scored three more times in the fourth and sixth innings to keep the Mets at bay. Tory Jandrin' solo shot in the fifth and Draves' second homer of the day in the seventh were the bright spots for the Mets. Drew Tanck and Woody Schartner drove in two runs for the Ports while Niedzwiecki registered three RBI.

In other Door County Baseball League action, Kolberg clobbered Institute 28-1, Washington Island snuck past Egg Harbor 6-5, and Sister Bay shut out Baileys Harbor 8-0.

This upcoming weekend, The GOAT will cover Friday's matchup in Institute between the Cubs and the Mets and Sunday's showdown in Egg Harbor with the Bays facing the Indians. Other games include Baileys Harbor hosting West Jacksonport and Washington Island visiting Kolberg.

Packers shareholders hold court at Lambeau Field

The Green Bay Packers will report to thousands of its shareholders on Monday for the organization's annual meeting.

Between 8,000 and 12,000 fans are expected for the largely ceremonial event inside the seating bowl. The football and business operations will get to give presentations to the shareholders that were shared last week with members of the media. According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, the Packers reported $610.3 million in revenue for the 2022-23 fiscal year, which concluded at the end of March. The team reported a profit from operations of $68.6 million and net income of $35.6 million. That was about $9 million and $26 million respectively off from last year. Increased player costs, market volatility, and the London game all contributed to a lower net income for the fiscal year, which concludes in March.

It will be the first time many fans get a chance to see the new jumbotrons in action. They were tested for much of the week before they were put to use during Friday's Packers 1K Kids Run and Packers 5K race.

The meeting is expected to begin at 11 a.m.

Green Bay batters Battle Creek

An eight-run eighth inning added insult to injury as the Green Bay Rockers entered a new week with a 14-2 win over the Battle Creek Jacks Sunday afternoon.

The Rockers were up 3-0 before the Jacks got on the board in the fifth inning, only to erase the damage in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs. The Rockers would bat around in the eighth inning with Carlos Hernandez, Jayson Jones, and Jack Holman all homering. JoJo Jackson and Jones were each responsible for driving in four runs while Holman knocked in three runs. Grayson Walker picked up the win, allowing just one run on four hits across five innings of work.

The Rockers are on their All-Star break and will return to action on July 27th when they welcome to the Madison Mallards for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.

Road Trip Finale is a Walkoff Loss

The Wisconsin Timber Rattler were an out away from a series win and a winning road trip on Sunday against the Dayton Dragons at Day Air Ballpark.  However, Dayton tied the game with a two-out homer and Edwin Arroyo capped the inning later in the ninth with a run-scoring single for his third RBI of the game.

The Rattlers (12-12 second half, 38-50 overall) scored in the first inning without the benefit of a hit.  Robert Moore walked, took second on a wild pitch, and stole third.  Ernesto Martínez Jr drove in Moore with a grounder to short that was misplayed for an error.

Dayton (12-12, 45-45) tied the game two batters into the bottom of the first inning.  Jay Allen II doubled and that was followed by an RBI single from Arroyo.

Wisconsin took the lead back two pitches into the top of the second.  Darrien Miller lifted a high fly to right on a 1-0 pitch and the ball carried over the wall for Miller’s seventh home run of the season for a 2-1 lead.

Justice Thompson tied the game with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the second.  In the top of the third, Thompson robbed Hendry Mendez of a two-out, extra-base hit with a leaping catch in center and holding on to the baseball after crashing hard into the wall.

The Dragons quickly took the lead in the bottom of the third.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Stiven Cruz hit the first two batters of the inning.  Arroyo doubled to knock in the go-ahead run.  Tyler Callihan drove in Dayton’s fourth run of the game on an infield grounder.

Ben Metzinger brought the Rattlers back to even in the sixth inning.  Mendez singled to start the frame against Dennis Boatman.  Mendez was at second base with two outs when Metzinger cracked a 3-2 pitch from Boatman to center for a two-run home run and a tie game.

Sam Gardner took over for Cruz to start the bottom of the fourth inning for Wisconsin.  Gardner retired the first nine batters he faced before giving up two singles in the bottom of the seventh inning.  He had to leave the game with runners on the corners and one out.

Shane Smith entered the game and kept the score tied with a strikeout and fly ball to center to end the seventh and a scoreless eighth.

Je’Von Ward gave Wisconsin the lead back in the top of the ninth with a long, lead-off home run high off the hitting background in center field for a 6-5 lead.

Tanner Shears entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and quickly retired the first two batters.  He was ahead of Hayden Jones with a strike.  Then, Jones hit the next pitch to right and the ball carried out of the park for a game-tying home run.  Shears walked the next two batters – Trey Faltine and Allen – to put the winning run on second base.  Arroyo lined a single to center on a 1-1 pitch and Faltine scored the winning run.

The Timber Rattlers, who won the first three games of the series at Dayton, dropped the last three games of the series with the Dragons.  The Rattlers finished their nine-game road trip to Illinois and Ohio with a 4-5 record.

Game one of the road trip was a 3-2 ten-inning loss to the Peoria Chiefs at Dozer Park.  Wisconsin took a 2-1 lead in the top of the tenth, but gave up two in the bottom of the tenth in that game for a walkoff loss.

The Timber Rattlers are off on Monday.  They start a home series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Tuesday evening.  Nate Peterson is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers and will be making his Midwest League debut.  Game time is 6:40pm.

Maplewood visits West Jacksonport for Sunday matinee on 105.1 The GOAT

With Sister Bay and Kolberg holding down the top spots in the Door County League Playoff picture, it is up to the other teams to sort out the other two seeds, including when Maplewood visits West Jacksonport Sunday afternoon.

In last week's thrilling walk-off victory over Washington Island, the Mets' Adam Gutschow sailed a lead-off home run deep into left field, to even the game at 3. Will Jandrin would come in to shut down the eighth and ninth inning, setting up a walk-off opportunity for Maplewood. Zach Marchant started off the inning and wasted no time sending a fastball into left-center field, just past the leaping glove of centerfielder Ben Geiger, to send Maplewood home with an upset win 4-3.

The Ports moved into a three-way tie for third place at 6-4 with a 9-3 win over Egg Harbor. the Mets' win over the Islanders helped the Ports and the Indians keep pace with the island with 6-4 records. The Mets could get closer to a playoff spot at 4-6 with a win on Sunday.

Gary Barta and Jacob Nate will have the call from West Jacksonport on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. The game will air on 105.1 The GOAT and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com.

Rockers squeak past Mallards

For the second straight night, the Green Bay Rockers won by the smallest of margins on Friday night, beating their hosts, the Madison Mallards, 2-1.

Losing 1-0 for much of the game, Austin Fawley sent the Mallards fans into the seventh-inning stretch in a sour mood with a two-run homer. The teams only had eight combined in the game (5 for the Rockers, 3 for the Mallards), including two hits in each team's rally in their respective innings.

The Rockers return home for Saturday and Sunday games against the Battle Creek Jacks.

Rattlers Win Streak Stopped by Dayton

The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were rolling through the first three games against the Dayton Dragons at Day Air Ballpark as they racked up 28 runs on 48 hits to string together a three-game winning streak.  That streak came to an end as four Dayton pitchers held the Timber Rattlers to four hits in a 6-2 victory over Wisconsin.

Dayton (10-12 second half, 43-45 overall) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning.  Jay Allen II singled to start the inning and wound up on third after a misplay by Hendry Mendez.  Edwin Arroyo followed with a sacrifice fly and the Dragons were up 1-0.

Three hits in the bottom of the second led to two more runs for the Dragons.  Ruben Ibarra and Tyler Callihan singled to start the frame.  Hayden Jones knocked in Ibarra and sent Callihan to third with a one-out single.  Trey Faltine grounded into a force play at second to score Callihan for a 3-0 lead.

Ernesto Martínez Jr got the Timber Rattlers (12-10, 38-48) on the board with a monstrous, two-run home run to right in the top of the third inning.  Martínez crushed a 2-2 pitch from Owen Holt.  The ball hit on the concourse by a concession stand and bounced over the fence surrounding the stadium onto the street and eventually into a cluster of pedestrians.  The homer was the tenth of the season for Martínez.

The Dragons were not impressed as they scored a single runs in their half of the third and fourth innings.  Austin Hendrick launched his own tape-measure home run to right in the bottom of the third.  Allen blooped a single to center with two outs to score a run to make it 5-2 in favor of Dayton.

Tyler Woessner, the Wisconsin starting pitcher, struck out eight to match his single-game high as a professional, but walked three and allowed five runs – four earned – on six hits over four innings.

Reliver Miguel Guerrero worked three scoreless innings in relief of Woessner to hold the deficit at three runs.  However, Wisconsin didn’t have another hit after the Martínez homer until Joe Gray Jr singled with two outs in the eighth.

Jones added an insurance run for the Dragons with a two-out home run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Rattlers went down in order in the top of the ninth inning to see their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Game five of the series is set for Saturday night at Day Air Ballpark.  Brandon Woodruff is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers as he makes a rehabilitation appearance against the Dragons.  Dayton has named Chase Petty (0-1, 1.93) as their starter.  Game time is 6:10pm CDT.

Bowlin earns promotion with Green Bay women's basketball

A familiar face will shift into a new role with the Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team.

Women's basketball head coach Kevin Borseth announced this week that he was promoting Patrick Bowlin to the position of assistant coach. Bowlin has been with the program since the 2021-2022 season as its Director of Basketball Operations. His time with the Phoenix was preceded by a high school coaching career in Minnesota.

Borseth, Bowlin, and assistant coaches Sarah Bronk, and Megan Vogel are hitting the road this weekend to recruit the next great class of Phoenix women's basketball players with the opening of the 2023-2024 season months away.

Rockers clip Mallards in extras

A run-scoring double by Austin Fawley in the 10th inning proved to be the difference as the Green Bay Rockers secured a 3-2 victory in Madison Thursday night against the Mallards.

There was no score until the seventh inning when Isaiah Jackson's single drove in the first run for the Mallards. With the game tied after a sacrifice fly for the Rockers, Kendal Ewell gave the team a brief lead with an RBI double. The Mallards would respond in the ninth inning to tie the game, setting up Fawley's heroics in the 10th. Michael Riley picked up the win for the Rockers, pitching the final four innings while giving up one run on two hits and striking out one.

The two teams play against each other again Friday night at 6:35 p.m.

Rattlers Offense Continues to Click in Dayton

Not even the weather could stop the red-hot Wisconsin Timber Rattlers offense Thursday night at Day Air Ballpark.  The Timber Rattlers cracked fourteen hits, including six doubles and two homers, to defeat the Dayton Dragons 11-2 in a rain-shortened game.  The win was the third straight for the Rattlers.

The Dragons (9-12 second half, 42-45 overall) jumped in front in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out, RBI single by Austin Hendrick.

Wisconsin (12-9, 38-47) rallied with two outs in the second to take the lead.  Je’Von Ward laced a double to right with two outs to get the inning to Jose Acosta, who took a 3-2 pitch over the wall in right for his second home run of the season and a 2-1 Rattlers lead.

Dayton missed on opportunities in their half of the second and third innings.  Wisconsin starting pitcher Alexander Cornielle walked a pair of batters with one out with his pitch count climbing dangerously close to thirty pitches for the second inning.  Cornielle escaped the frame with a strikeout and a grounder to second at twenty-six pitches for the frame.  In the third, the Dragons had runners at the corners with two outs.  Ruben Ibarra hit a hard grounder behind third, but Jheremy Vargas made a tough backhand pick.  The throw to first was low but scooped by Ernesto Martínez Jr for the final out.

The Timber Rattlers blew the game open in the top of the fourth inning against Dayton starter Jose Acuna, who entered the game with a 6-0 record.  Hendry Mendez started the inning with a single with a walk to Alex Hall putting two runners on base.  Ward doubled to left-center to score Mendez and put runners at second and third.  Acosta ripped a shot to first with the infield pulled in to get the run at the plate.  The ball went off the glove of Ibarra and trickled into right field.  The play was ruled an error and two runs scored for 5-1 lead.  Vargas was next and sent a deep fly to the track in left and that was the end of the night for Acuna.

Robert Moore greeted reliever John Murphy with a double to the corner in right to knock in Acosta.  Matt Wood followed and blasted a long homer to center.  Wood’s first Midwest League homer of the season capped the inning and gave the Rattlers an 8-1 advantage.

Cornielle gave up a lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth to Tyler Callihan.  Cornielle retired the next batter on strikeout.  Then, Justice Thompson sent another hard grounder behind third.  Vargas again made a good pick and this throw to first was on target.  Callihan took off for third on the throw to first.  Martínez tried to throw back across the diamond but threw wildly to allow Callihan to score.

The score stayed 8-2 until the top of the eighth inning.  Moore knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Wood followed with an RBI single.  In the ninth with storm clouds rolling in and lightning flashing around the ballpark, Joe Gray Jr, Mendez, and Ward singled to load the bases.  Gray scored on a wild pitch and the Rattlers had an 11-2 lead.

Wisconsin reliever Nick Merkel departed after four near-perfect innings.  He retired twelve of the thirteen batters he faced, allowing only an infield single to Thompson in the seventh inning.  Merkel struck out five Dragons and picked up his third win since joining the Timber Rattlers.

Michele Vassalotti entered in the bottom of the ninth inning and got the first out.  He missed with an 0-1 pitch to Callihan just as the skies opened up after a long peal of thunder.  The umpires called for the tarp and the game went into a delay.  The umpires called the game almost exactly thirty minutes after the game was halted.

The Timber Rattlers have collected 48 hits in the first three games of the series at Dayton.  Wisconsin is an unworldly 19-for-48 with runners in scoring position against the Dragons as they have put up 28 runs at Day Air Ballpark.

Wood had three hits and three RBI to lead the offense on Thursday night.  Acosta added three RBI while Ward had three hits including two doubles.

Game four of the series is Friday night at Day Air Ballpark.  Tyler Woessner (5-4, 3.55) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers.  Dayton has named Hunter Parks (2-4, 3.93) as their starter.  Game time is 6:10pm CDT.

Brandon Woodruff Scheduled for Rehab Starts with Rattlers

Brandon Woodruff’s comeback trail to Milwaukee will bring him through the Midwest League with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.  The Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher is set to start Saturday, July 22 in a road game against the Dayton Dragons.  Woodruff is also tentatively scheduled as the Rattlers starting pitcher for Thursday, July 27 for a game against the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Woodruff is 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA in two starts for Milwaukee this season.  He last pitched for the Brewers on April 7 when his pitched 5-1/3 scoreless innings against the St. Louis Cardinals at American Family Field.  Woodruff was placed in the 15-Day Injured List on April 11 with right shoulder inflammation.  He was diagnosed with a Grade 2 Subscapular Strain shortly after going on the IL.  Milwaukee transferred Woodruff to the 60-Day IL on May 15.

Milwaukee Brewers Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Arnold gave an update on Woodruff’s progress during an interview with Alanna Rizzo during MLB Network’s High Heat on July 14 and said that Woodruff had thrown a bullpen on July 13 prior to the team leaving for last weekend’s series in Cincinnati and was hoping to have the right-hander join the Brewers rotation “within the next month or so”.

This will be the second time Woodruff will pitch for the Timber Rattlers.  He made a start against the Quad Cities River Bandits on June 23, 2022 and picked up the win as he allowed a run on two hits with a walk and seven strikeouts over five innings.

Thursday, July 27 is a Craft Brews and Brats Night presented by Fox River Brewing Company and The Score.  Sixteen-ounce craft beers from local brewing companies are available to fans who are 21 and older for $3.  All fans can purchase a Cher-Make brat for $3 thanks on this night.  The first 1,000 fans to attend this game will receive a poster of recently promoted Milwaukee Brewers pitching prospect Jacob Misiorowski from Blue Print.  Neuroscience Group will also have a limited number of bike helmets for young fans as a giveaway, and they will help make sure the helmets are properly fitted.  The first pitch is scheduled for 6:40pm.

Tickets remain for this game and all remaining home games at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium.

Rockers secure comeback victory against Jackrabbits

The Green Bay Rockers turned a 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 road victory against the Kokomo Jackrabbits Wednesday night.

The Rockers registered single tallies in the second and fifth innings but found themselves down 5-2 late after the Jackrabbits scored twice in the sixth inning.  Max Mims tied the game in the seventh with a three-run homer and the Rockers took the lead in the eighth inning with an unearned run on a wild pitch. They would score twice more in the ninth as insurance thanks to a two-run single by Jack Holman.

The Rockers' road trip continues Thursday with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch in the state capitol against the Madison Mallards.

Gamblers announce new coaches

There will be some changes to the Green Bay Gamblers staff ahead of this upcoming season.

The Gamblers introduced Mason Baptista as a new assistant coach and announced the promotion of Pat McCadden to Associate Head Coach. Baptista returns to the area after a 10-year playing career and a coaching stint with one of his former teams following his time as a player at St. Norbert College. London falling: Packers see drop in profit

The Green Bay Packers saw record revenue in 2022, but it could have been more if they stuck around town.

Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy met with members of the Green Bay media on Wednesday to discuss the financials that will also be run through during Monday's annual stockholders meeting at Lambeau Field.

Between 8,000 and 12,000 fans are expected to attend Monday's stockholder's meeting, where the financial picture along with other reports, will be shared beginning at 11 a.m.

Marchant's walk-off helps Mets upset Islanders on 105.1 The GOAT

In a game that neither team truly had any control in, it was Maplewood’s Zach Marchant who put the game to rest in walk-off fashion as the Mets beat the Islanders 4-3 on 105.1 The GOAT.

Washington Island got the scoring going very early as the third batter Luke Geiger turned on a fastball and drove a two-run home run out to left center field to give Washington Island a quick 2-0 lead. Ryan Jorgenson began the game out strong, as he commanded his off speed pitches to retire Maplewood early and often.

The Mets would then respond with two runs of their own in the third inning after a walk and a hit by pitch charged against Ryan Jorgenson evened the game up 2-2. Jeremiah Jahnke would begin to find his groove as well, as the matchup between the Islanders and the Mets would turn into a pitcher's duel.

Washington Island was able to manufacture a run in the top of the fifth inning, as Ryan Jorgenson was brought home on a Luke Geiger RBI single. Geiger was responsible for all three of the Islanders runs, having a 3 for 4 day.

Both teams would be quiet until the eighth inning, when Adam Gutschow sailed a lead-off home run deep into left field, to even the game at 3. Will Jandrin would come in to shut down the eighth and ninth inning, setting up a walk-off opportunity for Maplewood.

Zach Marchant started off the inning, and wasted no time sending a fastball into left-center field, just past the leaping glove of centerfielder Ben Geiger, to send Maplewood home with an upset win 4-3.

Cubs walk to walk-off victory against A's on 105.1 The GOAT

Patience and perseverance helped the Institute Cubs break a season-long losing streak with a 10-9 walk-off victory against the Baileys Harbor A's Friday night.

The A's struck first in the first inning when Matt Francesconi singled home Bryce Plzak to make it 1-0. They would add onto the lead even more with a three-run fourth inning with Gavin Blink delivering the biggest blow with a two-RBI single. The A's scratched across two more runs in sixth inning, but that's when the Cubs started to chip away.

The Cubs scored their first run when Robby Pollman reached on an error that got away from the A's Cooper Cole and brought home Josh Pflieger. A Quin Schram single and an Elijah Reimer double later, the Cubs had cut the lead in half heading into the seventh. Blink drove in a third run in the seventh and entered the game's final innings with a 7-3 lead. The Cubs would then draw 10 walks and receive RBI hits from Pollman and Jake Pflieger to give them a 9-7 advantage heading into the ninth inning.

The A's forced extra innings in the ninth inning when Aaron Brey delivered a two-out, two-run RBI to tie the game up at nine. The Cubs nearly won the game in regulation before the A's turned a clutch double play to force extras.

After a quiet top of the 10th for the A's, Arthur Horcevar came off the bench to hit a single. With Nick Peterson running, Schram won the game for the Cubs with a gapper into left-center field to lead the team to victory.

Both teams are still looking at the rest of the Door County Baseball League in the standings, but they each have one win in the 2023 campaign.

Shoreland League holds on against Door County League on 105.1 The GOAT

The second inning proved to be the difference in the Shoreland League's 6-4 All-Star game victory over the Door County League Thursday night at Joannes Stadium in Green Bay.

Nearly perfect conditions and the host Green Bay Blue Ribbons welcome the best-of-the-best from the two summer leagues, which also featured several players that star in both.

Door County kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first when Egg Harbor's Cody Giesseman doubled home Kolberg's Nick LeCaptain to make it 1-0. The Shoreland League rebounded after 1-2-3 first inning against Maplewood's Jeremiah Janke by sending 11 batters to the plate, collecting five of their six runs and five of their seven hits in the frame. Kewaunee's Joe Anderson and Josh LaFleur of Ashwaubenon singled home runs to start the rally and Ashwaubenon's Trevor Cornell drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-1. Branch's August Hecker delivered the innings biggest blow with a two-run double to give the Shoreland All-Stars a 5-1 advantage that the Door County All-Stars would chase the rest of the night.

Door County's pitchers, which included Kolberg's Jake Schneider, Baileys Harbor's Jon Kordon,  Sister Bay's Matt Hecht, Washington Island's Matt Foss, and Egg Harbor's Joe Sawyer kept things in check during the middle innings, allowing just one hit and three total baserunners between the third and eighth innings. Door County cut into the lead in the fifth inning thanks to a double steal that brought home Egg Harbor's Corey Fuller and West Jacksonport's Kyle Volkmann singling home Nick Kita to make it 5-3. They would get it to a one-run game in the eighth inning when Washington Island's Ben Geiger drove in his teammate Luke Geiger, only to see Algoma's Austen Dart hurt his DCL counterparts with an RBI single to give the game its final margin.

The two teams have split their All-Star game matchups since welcoming the tradition back after a hiatus last year.

Sister Bay shows dominance over Islanders on 105.1 The GOAT

The Sister Bay Bays continued their strong season in an impressive fashion as they took down Washington Island 9-1 on 105.1 The GOAT.

The game was scoreless with pitchers Sam Forkert and Ryan Jorgenson dueling it out on the bump. The action did not begin until the third inning when Washington Island put their lone run on the board.  Caleb Cornell would come around to score after he singled and scored on an error by the left fielder.

Sister Bay would respond right away with a four run top of the fourth inning, as Spencer Krause, Tom Sawyer, Griffen Cole and Sawyer Johnson would touch home to make it 4-1.

Two more runs in the sixth inning would help Sam Forkert go six full innings with the one run scored being unearned. Matt Hecht would shut things down the rest of the way from the seventh to the ninth, and Sister Bay collected another win, their eight of the season.

The Islanders will face off with Maplewood next Sunday on 105.1 The GOAT, and Sister Bay taking on Kolberg in a battle at the top of the standings.

Ports push past Cubs on 105.1 the GOAT

The West Jacksonport Ports put the game out of reach early and put it away late to beat the Institute Cubs 19-7 in eight innings Friday night.

The Ports sent eight men to the plate in the first inning, but starting pitcher Jake Pflieger limited the damage to RBIs by Riley Cordier and Jaeger Brusky to make it 2-0. Pflieger was not as lucky in the second inning as he walked five and was victimized by two errors that led to the Ports scoring 10 runs on just four hits. Derek Niedzwiecki delivered the innings biggest blow with a bases-loaded double. The Ports would score twice more before the Cubs would finally get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning.

In that frame, the Cubs took advantage of three walks and three hit batsmen to score six runs, capitalized by RBI singles by Quin Schram and Kyle Ploor that drove in three of the six runs.

Drew Tanck's double would get one of those runs back in the fifth inning only to be matched by the Cubs' Brent Haberli who singled before stealing second and scoring on an errant throw.

With the score now 15-7, the Ports would bat around in the top of the seventh inning, collecting five hits and scoring four runs. The Cubs were set down in order in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game early. The Cubs remain winless on the year while the Ports remain very much in the playoff picture.

The other games scheduled for this weekend include Washington Island hosting Sister Bay, Egg Harbor traveling to Kolberg, and Baileys Harbor making its way to Maplewood. Tim Kowols and Gary Barta will have the call from Washington Island beginning at 1:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. on 105.1 The GOAT.

Sawyer's big day puts Bays over Ports on 105.1 The GOAT

Riding on the big bat of Tom Sawyer, the Sister Bay Bays rolled over the West Jacksonport Ports, winning 8-1 Sunday afternoon on 105.1 The GOAT.

After a silent first inning, Tom Sawyer began his big day with a walk, and came around to score after Casey Weddig drew a walk, making the game 1-0 after two innings. Spencer Krause would start off the third strong, with a double and an advancement to third on a throwing error from left fielder Derek Neidzwicki. Sawyer would then single home Krause, one of his two RBIs on the day. The very next pitch, Griffen Cole would double home Tom Sawyer, as Sawyer had been responsible for all three runs in some way at that point.

Sister Bay would tack on two more runs after that with a Sam Forkert two-run home run. Forkert's big day would not just be at the plate however, as he held the West Jacksonport Ports scoreless through 8 innings, giving up the lone role in a complete game shutout attempt. Forkert would finish with eight strikeouts on the day.

The Bays would go out to a 8-0 lead until Jackson Lindemann singled home Frankie deYoung, both in pitch hitting roles. The win moves Sister Bay to 7-1 and drops West Jacksonport to 4-4 and losers of three straight road losses.
