WIAA opens 2026 boys golf season

Don't let the piles of snow on the course fool you: Monday is the first day the state's high school boys golf teams can hit the links for practices ahead of the WIAA season start next week.

Sturgeon Bay won its third consecutive conference championship last year, capping off another season where the golf team took first place in all the conference meets. The title coincides with a three-year winning streak in the Packerland Conference. Luxemburg-Casco qualified for the sectional tournament with a third place finish to cap off a successful season in the Northeastern Conference.

Individually, Sturgeon Bay's Tre Wienke, Luxemburg-Casco's Josh Parins, and Gibraltar's Finn Salm, all seniors, were the area's state qualifiers.

Depending on the weather, the first rounds could be played as soon as Thursday. That will not be the case locally as the Packerland Conference does not have any rounds scheduled until May and Luxemburg-Casco won't compete until April 7th when they golf at Twin Oaks Golf Course.

Gamblers Take Care of Business Again, Sweep Weekend Series at Tri-City

Green Bay made it back-to-back wins in Kearney Saturday night, taking down the Tri-City Storm 5-2 at Viaero Center to sweep the weekend series.

The Gamblers came out firing, putting up two goals in the first. Jette got things started just 1:34 in, with Conboy picking up the assist. Bienstock added his 4th of the year late in the period to make it 2-0 heading into the second.

Tri-City pulled one back early in the second on a goal from Ozogany, but Green Bay answered on the power play when Gulley potted his 23rd of the season to push the lead back to two.

The Storm made it interesting with a goal early in the third, but Hafele answered right back to put it out of reach. Knutson sealed it with an empty netter at 16:33.

Henriquez was excellent between the pipes again, stopping 25 of 27 shots to improve to 19-9-2-2 on the year. Green Bay also outshot Tri-City 41-27 on the night.

The Gamblers head home with a sweep and some momentum.

Gamblers pull away late to take down Tri-City 5-2

Green Bay earned a 5-2 win over the Tri-City Storm Friday night, riding a strong third period to keep momentum building in the Eastern Conference after clinching a playoff spot last weekend.

The Gamblers struck first in the opening frame. Conboy finished assists from Will Wooten and Jette at 8:37 to give Green Bay an early lead.

In the second period, Green Bay added to the lead on a Samuelsson power-play goal before Tri-City answered with back-to-back goals in just over a minute to tie it at 2.

The third period was all Gamblers. Kasper Katz got the lead back on an early power play, and Hafele and Rozsíval added insurance goals to seal the win. Green Bay converted both power-play chances and kept Tri-City off the board in the final frame.

Tri-City peppered 35 shots on goal, but netminder Raul “Junior” Henriquez came up big stopping 33 to keep the Gamblers in control. Though Green Bay was outshot by the Storm 27-35 overall, the Gamblers stayed disciplined enough to take advantage of key opportunities throughout the game.

The win gives Green Bay a boost as they start closing in on the final weekend series of the regular season.

For now, it's a strong start to the weekend series with Tri-City in Kearny, Nebraska.

Gamblers hit the road to face Storm

Gavin Katz led the charge with a hat trick, David Rozsival scored on a penalty shot, and additional goals came from Elliot Gulley, Cruz Martin, Zach Wooten, and Brady O’Malley. Goalie Joey Slavick earned the win, stopping 27 shots.

The Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has recently announced that they have re-signed defensive lineman Arron Mosby.

Rockers add four pitchers to their arsenal

The Green Bay Rockers have recently signed four new pitchers to their squad. They picked up Ricky Howell, Caden Roth, Max Wagner, and Henry Irwin, all right-handed throwers.

Irwin (6’3”, 190lbs) is getting his first look at college baseball as a redshirt freshman at Modesto Junior College. He’s made four appearances this season as a relief, pitching in 3 innings, allowing two hits while striking out four batters.

Leading the Gamblers this season has been forward Zach Wooten, who is sixth in the USHL in goals with 58 (34 goals, 24 assists) in just 57 games. Goalie Leo Henriquez holds the second-best goals against average in the league with a 2.28 mark and a save percentage of 0.919.

Third period eruptions breaks Gamblers' skid

Five goals in the third period broke a six-game skid for the Green Bay Gamblers as they beat the Chicago Steel in a Sunday matinee 8-5.

The two teams matched each other in each of the first two periods, scoring twice in the first and once in the second to enter the third tied at 3-3. David Rozsíval's penalty shot tally opened the flood gates less than 90 seconds into the third period, starting a stretch of four unanswered goals in the first nine minutes. The Steel got two of the goals back, but an empty-netter by Zach Wooten ended any threat of a comeback. The game also got chippy in the third period with 63 penalty minutes passed out, which including five game misconducts.

Gavin Katz registered a hat trick before his game misconduct while Elliott Gulley (1G, 3A), Zach Wooten (2G, 0A), Ethan Sturgis (0G, 2A), and Cruz Martin (1G, 1A) also had multi-point games.

The Gamblers will play out the rest of the month on the road when they travel to Nebraska to face the Tri-City Storm on Friday and Saturday.

Wisconsin Lutheran's Third Straight Title Highlights Five Boys Basketball Champions

The 110th State Boys Basketball Tournament crowned champions in five divisions Saturday at the Kohl Center.

In Division 1, top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran (30-0) capped an undefeated season with a 57-37 victory over third-seeded Madison Memorial (27-3) in the championship game.

It’s the third straight title for the Vikings, who won back-to-back Division 1 titles and captured the Division 2 crown in 2024. After a closely contested first half that ended in a 22-22 tie, Wisconsin Lutheran outscored the Spartans 21-2 during a 10-minute stretch in the second half to take control.

The Vikings shot 62.2% from the floor and outscored the Spartans 34-14 in points in the paint. Xavier Zens led all scorers with 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Kager Knueppel added 16 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Kinston Knueppel had a game-high five assists.

The Spartans were led by Anthony Miller, who scored 12 points on four 3-pointers. His 10 3-pointers in the tournament set a Division 1 record for most in a state tournament since the two-game format was implemented. Andrew Braun added 10 points.

Wisconsin Lutheran won its fifth championship in its sixth state tournament appearance. Madison Memorial finished runner-up in its 11th appearance.

Third-seeded Whitefish Bay (24-6) cruised to the Division 2 championship with a 77-46 victory over Slinger (25-5).

Whitefish Bay led for all but 34 seconds. A 7-0 run midway through the first half extended the Blue Dukes’ lead to 18-7, and Slinger never cut the deficit to single digits the rest of the game.

The Blue Dukes held advantages of 42-20 in points in the paint and 17-4 in fast-break points. Whitefish Bay shot 62.2% from the field, while its defense held Slinger to 28%.

Jack Broderson led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Colin Julien added 14 points, Marcus Webb had 13 and Matthew Schoenefeldt scored 11. Webb also had a team-high five assists.

Bryson Fogle led Slinger with 20 points. Jack Kohnen added 13 points and had nine rebounds and five assists.

Whitefish Bay won its fourth state championship in its seventh appearance. Slinger finished runner-up in its second appearance.

In Division 3, third-seeded Racine St. Catherine’s (25-4) defeated top-seeded Seymour (28-2) 61-41.

After Seymour scored the first four points, the Angels responded to take a 19-9 lead late in the first half and maintained control the rest of the game.

The Angels held a 26-5 advantage in points off turnovers and shot 57% from the field, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range.

Lamont Hamilton led Racine St. Catherine’s with 26 points, five assists, seven rebounds and three steals. AC Contreras Ward added 12 points.

Seymour was led by Kyler Marks with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Isaac Feske added 10 points and seven rebounds, and Xavier Salzman had three assists.

Racine St. Catherine’s won its seventh state title in its eighth appearance. Seymour finished runner-up in its 14th appearance.

Milwaukee Juneau (28-1), the No. 2 seed, won its first championship in any sport with a 62-54 victory over fourth-seeded Cambridge (20-10) in the Division 4 final.

The first half featured 11 lead changes. Dooney Johnson scored 14 straight points during a six-minute stretch, but Juneau trailed 32-30 at halftime. After falling behind 37-32 early in the second half, the Pioneers used a 9-2 run to take the lead for good.

Juneau shot 51% from the field and forced 19 turnovers. Johnson finished with 23 points and seven rebounds. Jaden Hardiman added 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and Takis Tyler had four assists and five steals.

Cambridge was led by Jett Horton with 14 points, while Evan Hartbort added 11. Cal Nottestad had seven rebounds, and Ian Nelles recorded four assists.

Top-seeded Reedsville (28-3) won its second state championship — and its first in 80 years — with a 56-48 win over third-seeded Southwestern (24-7) in the Division 5 final.

The game was tightly contested throughout. Southwestern led 23-17 late in the first half, but Reedsville responded with a 7-0 run and took a 35-33 lead at halftime. The Panthers did not trail in the second half.

Arden Strenn and Ben Prochnow led Reedsville with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Strenn also had a game-high 14 rebounds, and Prochnow added eight assists. Reedsville held a 13-0 advantage in fast-break points.

Southwestern was led by Aiden Keleher, Remi Lawrence and Cayden DeMuth, who each scored 13 points. Carsen Splinter had eight rebounds, and Keleher added three assists.

Reedsville’s second title comes in its second state appearance. Southwestern finished runner-up.

Blizzard hold on to start season 2-0

The Green Bay Blizzard survived a second-half scare Saturday night at the Resch Center, holding off the Fishers Freight 51-42 to move to 2-0 on the young IFL season.

Green Bay built a commanding 35-9 halftime lead before Fishers outscored the Blizzard 26-7 in the second half to make things interesting. Green Bay held on when it mattered most.

Quarterback Liam Thompson was the story of the night, finishing 8-of-20 for 141 yards and three passing touchdowns while adding 85 rushing yards and four more scores on the ground. Draysean Hudson was his top target with two catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Isaac Ross chipped in three receptions for 44 yards and a score.

The defense added two interceptions, one each from Giovanni Waller and Franky West Jr., while Allen Henry and Tevaughn Grant led the pass rush with a combined 1.5 sacks. Green Bay won the turnover battle convincingly, forcing three turnovers total including a Felix Harper fumble.

For Fishers, Harper finished 15-of-23 for 154 yards and three touchdowns but threw two picks and lost a fumble. Josiah King rushed for two scores.

The Blizzard outgained Fishers 244-217 in total offense and held a 103-63 edge on the ground. Andrew Mevis added a 28-yard field goal in the fourth to help seal it.

Green Bay hits the road next Saturday, April 4th, traveling to Des Moines to take on the Iowa Barnstormers at Casey's Center. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM CDT.

Gamblers fall in Dubuque, still searching for momentum

The Green Bay Gamblers dropped a 4-2 decision in Dubuque Saturday night, falling behind early and never fully recovering.

Dubuque wasted no time, scoring twice in the opening four minutes to put Green Bay on its heels. The fast start set the tone, with the Saints controlling play and outshooting the Gamblers early.

Green Bay answered late in the first. Will Wooten found the net shorthanded to cut it to 2-1 and give the Gamblers some life. Dubuque responded just 17 seconds later on the power play to push the lead back to two heading into the intermission.

In the third, the Gamblers made one more push. Carcone capitalized on the power play to cut the deficit to 3-2, and Green Bay had a chance to make it interesting late. That would be as close as they’d get, though, as Dubuque added an empty-net goal to seal it.

Dubuque finished with a 30-24 edge in shots. Raul “Junior” Henriquez made 26 saves and kept the Gamblers within reach despite the early surge.

Green Bay has hit a bit of a skid, but they remain in a strong position in the Eastern Conference and have already secured a postseason spot heading into the final stretch.

They’ll try to bounce back quickly with a date at Fox Valley Ice Arena taking on Chicago Sunday afternoon for a 3:05 puck drop.

Gamblers can't close it out, fall in OT to open weekend

The Green Bay Gamblers were minutes away from closing one out Friday night, but a late surge from the Dubuque Fighting Saints forced overtime, where Green Bay fell 4-3.

After a scoreless first period, the Gamblers struck first in the second. Ryan Knutson opened the scoring at 1:50 with assists from Tate Hafele and Kasper Katz. Dubuque answered on the power play midway through the period, but Will Wooten gave Green Bay the lead back late in the frame, finishing a feed from Katz to make it 2-1 heading into the third.

Green Bay added to the lead early in the final period. Just 16 seconds in, Wooten found the back of the net again, his second of the night and 31st of the season, to push the advantage to 3-1.

From there, Dubuque flipped the momentum. The Fighting Saints cut the deficit to one with just over three minutes to play, then found the equalizer at 18:33 to send the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, Dubuque completed the comeback with the game-winner at 3:54.

The Fighting Saints outshot Green Bay 34-24, while Raul “Junior” Henriquez made 30 saves in the loss.

Green Bay returns to the ice Saturday at 7:05 pm for a rematch in Dubuque.

Horizon League Champs Downed in First Round

On the road facing Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Green Bay Phoenix held the lead at each quarter break through the first three frames. However, the Gophers came alive in the fourth, outscoring GB 30-9 for a 75-58 win that sent the Phoenix home in the first round.

Green Bay, a 13-seed, controlled the game through three quarters, but Minnesota opened the fourth on a 16-0 run, turning a six-point deficit into a 10-point lead the Phoenix could not overcome.

The Gophers shot 75 % from the field in the fourth quarter while Green Bay went cold, finishing 4-of-15 from the floor and unable to convert at the rim through contact and tough looks.

Maddy Skorupski played all 40 minutes in the loss and led Green Bay with 19 points and six rebounds. Meghan Schultz added 12 points while battling foul trouble throughout. Leading all scorers was Minnesota's Amaya Battle with 21 points and eight rebounds.

That fourth-quarter explosion was all the Gophers needed to avoid the upset and send Green Bay home early. It's a bitter end to a hard-fought season that saw the Phoenix claim both the Horizon League regular season title and the conference tournament championship.

A good run for the Phoenix women once again.

Blizzard hosting Fishers Freight this weekend

The Green Bay Blizzard is preparing for this Saturday as it hosts the Fishers Freight.

Leading the way for the Blizzard was quarterback Liam Thompson, who completed 11 of 16 passing attempts for 98 yards and two touchdowns and added 59 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Rockers continue to make roster additions

Green Bay exploring the addition of wrestling

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay could add one more sport to its portfolio in the coming years, carrying with it plenty of local appeal.

Speaking with Ben Askren from WIWrestle, Green Bay Athletic Director Josh Moon addressed the rumors that the department was looking to add wrestling as a sport, joining the likes of cross country, basketball, golf, nordic sking, volleyball, soccer, and swimming. Citing the success of local teams like Kaukauna, Bay Port, Coleman, and Luxemburg, Moon says they would be crazy not to explore the possibility of adding the sport. The finances of adding the sport and acquiring the talent to make it a successful program are some of the hurdles they are facing at this point.

Packers to honor Harlan on Lambeau facade

The late Bob Harlan will join the rarified air of Green Bay Packers legends later this year when his name joins the dozens on the facade of Lambeau Field.

Packers President and CEO Ed Policy made the announcement on Tuesday, noting Harlan's contributions to the organization by making Lambeau Field an iconic stadium in the National Football League. "Bob relentlessly dedicated himself to our organization and we are grateful for all he did," Policy told Packers.com.

Harlan joins the late Ted Thompson as the lone names on the facade that do not have their numbers retired or enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Harlan, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 89, will be honored at a yet-to-be-decided game this season

Blizzard sneak past Knight Hawks

The Green Bay Blizzard had no fans to celebrate with, but it was a win nonetheless as they beat the Vegas Knight Hawks 37-35 in the season opener.

The Blizzard built up a 13-0 lead before the Knight Hawks got onto the scoreboard with a touchdown. The offensive onslaught would continue with the Blizzard scoring another 10 points to take a 23-7 advantage into halftime. The Knight Hawks were not going to go away quietly as they scored 28 of the final 42 points of the game, but a late goal-line stand gave the Blizzard their first win of the season.

Quarterback Liam Thompson scored four touchdowns, including two on the ground, as he piled up 157 yards of total offense. Trevon Alexander and Salvatore Malignaggi each caught one touchdown pass from Thompson, while Draysean Hudson rushed in for another.

The Blizzard are back in action on Saturday when they face the Fishers Freight.

TOURNAMENT HISTORY:  The first WIAA State Boys Basketball Tournament was held in 1916. The Kohl Center has hosted the championships since moving from the UW Field House in 1998. During the COVID-19 pandemic the tournament was canceled in 2020 and held at two separate locations in 2021, the La Crosse Center for Divisions 2, 4, and 5, and at the Menominee Nation Arena in Oshkosh for Divisions 1 and 3. The tournament featured a one-class format until 1934 when, for two years (1934-35), there were two classes. From 1936 until 1939, the tournament increased to three classes and then returned to the one class format in 1940. A one-class tourney prevailed until 1972 when it again became a two-class event. The tourney went to three classes again in 1974 and remained that way until a four-division format was adopted in 1991. The 2011 State Tournament introduced the first five-division format with four teams qualifying in each division. Randolph has won 11 State championships, the most titles won by any member school. Beloit Memorial and Dominican have won seven championships. Racine St. Catherine’s and Stevens Point have won six titles; and Milwaukee King, Milwaukee Vincent and Milwaukee Lincoln have each won five. There have been 136 different schools that have won championships. Neenah has qualified for the most State Tournaments with 30, and Superior is next with 27, followed by Beloit Memorial with 26, and then Eau Claire with 25.

Board Passes Strategic Plan, Conference Realignment Plans; Advances Amendments

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control approved a strategic plan, several Conference Realignment Task Force recommendations, and advanced two constitutional amendments to the Annual Meeting during its March meeting today.

The board approved a five-year strategic plan for the membership with vision and mission statements that will be shared with the membership at next month’s Annual Meeting.

Among the conference realignment solutions approved by the board were sport-specific changes. Altoona will move to the Middle Border Conference from the Cloverbelt Conference in wrestling only; Shawano/Bonduel will transition to the Great Northern Conference for boys hockey from independent status; Parkview will move from independent status to the Rock Valley Conference in girls golf; Middleton will depart the Badger Conference and enter the Big Eight Conference; and the Sun Prairie co-op will split into two stand-alone programs in the Big Eight Conference for boys volleyball.

The change involving Sun Prairie is associated with a larger plan that realigns the Badger and Big Eight conferences in boys volleyball, effective in the 2027-28 school year.

The Big Eight Conference for boys volleyball will include Sun Prairie East, Sun Prairie West, Madison West, Madison East, Madison Memorial, Madison La Follette, Verona and Middleton. The programs in the Badger Conference will include Waunakee, DeForest, Monona Grove/McFarland, Fort Atkinson and Edgewood.

Several realignment solutions for schools in all sports, excluding football, were also approved. Beginning in the 2027-28 school year, Appleton West will exit the Fox Valley Association to enter the Bay Conference; Viroqua will move to the Southwest Conference from the Coulee Conference; Portage will enter the Capitol Conference from the Badger Conference; and St. Ambrose and The Lincoln Academy will move from independent status to the Trailways Conference.

The board approved realignment in the Milwaukee area that moves Menomonee Falls and Germantown from the Greater Metro Conference to the North Shore Conference, and Grafton from the North Shore Conference to the Glacier Trails Conference. The board remanded plans involving other Greater Metro schools, the Classic 8 Conference, the Southeast Conference and independent schools in the Milwaukee area back to the task force for additional review and final consideration at the board’s April meeting.

A fast-track application placing Merrill in the Great Northern Conference for boys hockey will be addressed by the board following completion of the realignment process in April.

The board voted to advance two constitutional amendments to the membership for a vote at next month’s Annual Meeting. One addresses the powers and duties of the Board of Control. It would remove language requiring all changes to rules and regulations to be passed by the Advisory Council before advancing to the board, returning decision-making authority to the Board of Control for matters within the Constitution, Bylaws, Rules of Eligibility and sport-specific regulations.

The second amendment would remove coaching contact restrictions for newly hired coaches who have not previously coached a student-athlete in the respective school’s program.

Other action items approved by the board included winter cooperative teams for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years, as well as routine monthly financial matters, including general fund financial statements and payments, fall sports financial statements, and the deferred liability fund statement.

Claire Higgins of St. Mary Catholic, a member of the Student-Athlete Leadership Team, conducted a virtual presentation on the group’s activities and promoted the rescheduled Leadership Summit on April 15 at SentryWorld in Stevens Point. Additional discussion topics included reassessing divisional placement regulations in basketball, updates from the Calendar and Contact Committee, competitive balance, and ongoing efforts to recruit and retain licensed officials.

The board also received liaison reports from Dan Rossmiller of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Paul Manriquez of the Department of Public Instruction and Kyle LeMieux of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

The WIAA, as defined by its constitution, is a private, voluntary, unincorporated nonprofit organization. Its membership oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 515 senior high schools and 30 junior high/middle-level schools.

Wauwatosa East, last year’s champion in Division 2, finished runner-up in its fifth state appearance. The Red Raiders advanced to the title game following a 62-58 victory over Notre Dame in the semifinals.

Whitefish Bay (26-4), the No. 2 seed, edged fourth-seeded Beaver Dam (23-7) 64-63 to claim the Division 2 title.

The Blue Dukes went on a 7-0 run at the end of an evenly played first half to take a 38-30 lead into halftime. A 9-0 run to start the second half appeared to put Whitefish Bay in position for a comfortable ride to the title. That’s when the Golden Beavers responded with a 22-4 run to take a 52-51 lead with 9:02 remaining.

With Beaver Dam leading 63-60 with 1:32 to play in regulation, Sage Miskel scored twice in the paint on successive possessions for the Blue Dukes to provide the margin of victory.

Miskel led Whitefish Bay with 18 points. Madaline Volpe added 12 points, and Rowan Counsell and Carrington Balthasar chipped in with 10 points apiece. Counsell also recorded a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds and added five assists.

Nataya Donaldson and Emma Julka also scored in double figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Donaldson also led the game with 13 rebounds, and Sheamarie Ashley handed out a game-high six assists.

Whitefish Bay defeated Elkhorn 78-42 in the semifinals to advance to the title game. The Blue Dukes won their first championship in eight state appearances.

Beaver Dam downed Rice Lake 70-58 in the semifinals and finished runner-up in its seventh state appearance.

Top-seeded Oostburg (30-0) rolled to its second consecutive Division 3 championship, defeating second-seeded Wisconsin Dells (29-1) 64-37 in the title game.

The Lady Dutch scored the first eight points of the game and led 12-1 before the Chiefs fought back to pull within a basket at 14-12 with an 11-2 run. Oostburg responded by building a double-digit lead for the remainder of the first half to take a 42-21 halftime advantage. The closest Wisconsin Dells would get in the second half was 18 points after a 3-pointer to start the scoring.

The Lady Dutch were led by the trio of Ketterhagen sisters. Ady Ketterhagen led the team in scoring and rebounds with 20 points and nine rebounds. Kinsley Ketterhagen contributed 14 points, six rebounds and a game-high five assists, and Riley Ketterhagen added 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Chiefs were led offensively by Jaz Alwin’s 20 points. Natalie Backhaus chipped in with seven points and a game-high 11 rebounds to go with a team-high four assists.

Oostburg defeated Mosinee 63-50 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game for the second straight year. The Lady Dutch won the program’s fifth title in their 12th state appearance. Wisconsin Dells beat Kettle Moraine Lutheran 77-71 in the semifinals to advance to the final, finishing runner-up in its second state appearance.

Top-seeded Neillsville (29-1) turned back third-seeded Albany/Monticello (27-3) 43-40 in the Division 4 title game to win the championship.

The Warriors withstood a late comeback attempt by the Space Stallions. Trailing by seven with one minute remaining, Albany/Monticello’s Heidi Olson drained a 3-pointer. Molly Olson then made a steal on the next Neillsville possession, and Annie Olson cut the deficit to one at 41-40 with another 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining. However, Madi Davel secured the title for the Warriors with a steal and two free throws in the final moments.

Wisconsin native Johnson wins second UFC fight

Donte Johnson, a Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, native, won his second UFC fight Saturday.

The middleweight faced Cody Brundage in the preliminary round of UFC Fight Night 326. The fight went all three rounds, with Johnson claiming a split-decision victory.

The young prospect is now 2-0 in the UFC and holds an impressive 8-0 record across all professional MMA organizations.

Packers sign C/G Rhyan to contract extension

Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced Wednesday that the team signed center/guard Sean Rhyan to a contract extension.

Rhyan was drafted by the Packers in the third round (No. 92 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft out of UCLA. He has appeared in 48 regular-season games, starting 28, and has also started four playoff games.

Rhyan was part of an offensive line that helped the Packers rank in the top five in the NFL in 2024-25 in sacks allowed (No. 2, 51), sack percentage (No. 4, 5.0), yards per pass attempt (No. 3, 8.0), and rushing yards (No. 5, 133.3 per game).

Packers make early moves with St-Juste, Moore signings

The Green Bay Packers got to work early in free agency Tuesday, signing cornerback Benjamin St-Juste and wide receiver/return specialist Skyy Moore.

St-Juste brings size and experience to Green Bay’s secondary. The 6-foot-3 cornerback has been a regular starter since entering the league in 2021 and gives the Packers another option in a defensive back room that has seen its share of turnover in recent seasons.

Green Bay also added Moore on a one-year deal, a move that could have an immediate impact on special teams. Moore has experience as both a receiver and returner. A strong addition for a special teams unit that will look to be impactful next year with the hiring of Cam Achord.

The additions of St-Juste and Moore represent early depth moves as the organization begins assembling its roster ahead of training camp and the 2026 season.

Green Bay women stay queens of the Horizon League

The Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball made it three straight Horizon League Tournament titles Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Youngstown State Penguins women's basketball 57-49 at Corteva Coliseum in Indianapolis.

Green Bay jumped out to a quick 5-0 start, but the offense cooled as Youngstown State settled into the game. The Penguins were able to take a 28-25 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Green Bay’s defense began to take control of the game. The Phoenix held Youngstown State to just 21 second-half points, including only 10 in the fourth quarter.

The Penguins briefly reclaimed the lead at 43-42 in the final period, but Green Bay responded with a decisive 9-0 run to regain control and close out the championship victory.

Jenna Guyer led the Phoenix with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Maddy Skorupski added 13 points and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

With the win, Green Bay secures its third consecutive Horizon League Tournament title and earns another trip to the NCAA Tournament. It will mark the program’s 21st appearance in March Madness, with matchups set to be announced next week.

Packers letting players walk

Even if the deals are not official until later this week, it already appears that the Green Bay Packers will look vastly different during the 2026-2027 season.

According to multiple sources across the NFL, some moves from Monday included:

  • Packers release OL Elgton Jenkins
  • DE Kingsley Enagbare to sign with Jets
  • QB Malik Willis agrees to sign with Dolphins
  • Packers trade DE Rashan Gary to Cowboys for 2027 pick
  • Packers re-signing LB Kristian Welch
  • Packers re-signing OL Darian Kinnard

The only move that has been confirmed by the organization is the release of Jenkins, who was a two-time Pro Bowler as a do-it-all offensive lineman. "Elgton established himself as one of the best and most versatile offensive linemen in the league during his time in Green Bay," said General Manager Brian Gutekunst on Packers.com. "He contributed so much to our success over the past seven seasons and was a tremendous leader and teammate who brought an unselfishness and toughness to our team. We want to thank Elgton for all that he gave to this franchise and we wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Deals from the legal tampering period will not be confirmed until the real start of the league year later this week.

Services announced for former Packers President and CEO Harlan

The biggest highlight came when the Packers brought the Lombardi Trophy back to Green Bay with a victory in Super Bowl XXXI.

Green Bay Phoenix fans will now have two teams to cheer on in Indianapolis this weekend after the women beat Detroit-Mercy 81-57 at the Kress Events Center in the Barbasol Horizon League Championship First Round.

The Titans gave the Phoenix all they could handle for the majority of the game outside of one five-minute stretch at the end of the first half. During that time, the Phoenix rattled off 19 straight points to make it a 44-25 game at the break. The Phoenix would extend their lead to nearly 30 points in the third quarter before settling on the final margin.

It was a milestone night for Horizon League Player of the Year Jenna Guyer, who scored her 1000th career point as a part of a career-high 25 points to go along with nine points.  Maddy Skorupski registered a rare triple-double of 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists while Carley Duffney added 14 points and Meghan Schultz chipped in 13 points.

Green Bay men advance in Barbasol Horizon League tournament

Taking on Purdue Fort Wayne inside the Resch Center, Green Bay looked for their first Horizon League tournament win since the 2019-20 season.

The Phoenix swept the Mastodons in the regular season and the success continued into the first half of play Tuesday night.

Green Bay built a 34-22 lead going into the break off 50 percent shooting from the field and 4-of-10 beyond the arc.

Offensive production slowed in the second half, but not enough to down GB as they rolled to a 64-56 win. The Phoenix were led by Marcus Hall's 19 points (7-13). Helping him in double figures was Justin Allen grabbing 13 and Preston Ruedinger with 11. Ruedinger also tabbed 8 assists to spread the wealth.

A 14-6 advantage in points off turnovers went in favor of Green Bay and proved to be enough of a difference maker in the victory.

For Green Bay, it's another big step forward in rebuilding a program that has at times had success, but unable to sustain. The Phoenix will play again March 8th or 9th at the Corteva Coliseum depending on the outcomes from the rest of the first-round games.

GB will now await their Horizon League tournament first-round opponent as teams finish regular season games and are seeded. The game will be played Tuesday, Mar. 3 with the Phoenix hosting.

Mastodons' big fourth upsets Green Bay women

The regular season finale for Green Bay women's basketball didn't go the way they would have liked after a fourth quarter lead disappeared to Purdue Fort Wayne and they were downed 71-66 on the road.

Green Bay's stifling defense was not present in the finale as they had just two steals while turning the ball over 24 times. That led to 27 points for Fort Wayne and helped mount a comeback in the fourth.

They trailed at halftime, but took the lead in the third quarter after holding the Mastodons to 12 points while putting up 19. However, they were outscored by 10 in the final frame.

GB shot just 25 percent from three and had two Phoenix in double figures, Meghan Schultz and Jenna Guyer. Schultz topped all scorers with 20.

Purdue's Alana Nelson grabbed 18 and was supported by Jordan Reid, Lili Krasovec, and Lauren Lee with double-digits.

Green Bay waits to find out their Horizon League tournament first-round opponent as they play the winner of the 10/11 seed matchup between Detroit Mercy and Milwaukee. The game will be played at the Kress Center Wednesday, Mar. 4 at 7 p.m.
